A resident of Welverdiend’s FourthStreet this week woke up in th erealymorning hours to find three men in hisroom.

Th incident took place on Tuesdaymorning at about 02:00. The threemen gained entry by removing the bur-glar bars from the window outside hisson’s room.

“They entered my room and thengrabbed me. I kicked one of the sus-pects and he fell down.

“They tied me up with my shoe lacesand stuffed my mouth with my pillowcase before they started searching myroom,” the victim, a father in his for-ties, told the Herald on Tuesday after-noon. According to the resident thesuspects asked him for his gun, am-munition and money. He told themthat it was kept at the police station.

The victim addsed that he could he-ar them speaking but he was not sureif they were speaking Sotho or Shan-gaan. He then tried to communicatewith them in Sotho, but they told himto shut up and continued to assaulthim.

“They left my room and soon afterI heard them starting my car. One sus-pect returned to my room and he co-vered my head with a plastic bag lea-ving me to suffocate,” says the victim.

“At that point all I could think aboutwas my children and that I can’t dielike this. I heard my car drive awayfrom my house.

“I hopped to my bathroom where Iused the tap to open the plastic bagand I was able to breathe freely. I hop-ped to kitchen and I was able to get aknife to cut the shoe laces that I wastied up with. I went straight to myneighbours and they helped me to con-tact the police.

“The three suspects killed two of mydogs and they stole my son’s compu-ter, a laptop, a sound system, onespeaker and my army knife,” says thevictim.

According to the police they chasedafter the suspects who later left the carat Water’s Edge before running away.

black families as I myself was neverencouraged to do what I really wan-ted to do in life - music.Young people are limited and they

do not get to nurture their naturalabilities because they do not receiveenough support.Instead you are subjected to nega-

tive criticism and this might lead tofailure and a lack of self-confidence.This kind of thinking has prevailedin the black community for too long

and has lead to the current state ofunemployment amongst the youth.

If people can shift their focus fromjust working to survive, pay bills, putfood on the table to actually findingtheir passions and doing what theyshould actually be doing, they wouldrealise howpleasant life is when you dowhat you love and enjoy.There could be an increase in pro-

duction and less strikes.The issue of employment can be

combated if people change their thin-king of having to seek employment tocreating employment by venturing inbusiness and being persistent enoughto endure the trouble it takes to sustainthe business.When you are in line what you truly

want, you have more chances of beingsuccessful than spending somuch timeand energy in a career than drains youinstead of uplifting you.At some point we as human beings

come to a breakdown point when youjust can’t take it anymore.The point is that a life without happi-

ness is not worth living and peopleshould strive with their utmost best tofind happiness.Doing what you love can be your

fountain of joy even if you don’t earnanything from it.Gone are the days when formal ca-

reers were the way to go if you want tobe successful because we are living ina different era where things are easierthan previously when you could not ac-cess information easily.We are living in the information and

creative age whereby education andgood ideas can get you anywhere youwish to get to because if you are infor-med enough you will know what isgoing on around you.The creative age is an age which is

about using our creativity to introducenew ways of doing things and it also re-volves around arts, technology etc. Soin this age anyone can come with anidea that can alter the destiny of man-kind.Young people have to start thinking

out of the box and create their own op-portunities instead of looking up to get-ting a job and working for someone el-se.Let’s rather establish ourselves pro-

The police are looking for informationafter an expensive statue on a tombsto-ne was stolen at the Carletonville ceme-tery recently.The statue, which had been placed on

the grave of the lateDrMaserameLetsie,was stolen between Sunday, 9 Septem-ber around07:00andSaturday, 20Sep-tember at about 06:00. The bronze sta-tue of a single female figurewith gradua-te attire, is 1.8 metres high and cast inbronze. It is worth R180 000. The poli-ce suspects that parts of the statue arebeing sold for scrap metal. Anyone withinformation are asked to contact the in-vestigating officer, Constable TshepisoMontsho at 0726889214.

The Police in Carletonville’s CrimePrevention Unit conducted an ope-ration to clean outBlyvoor as it hasbecame a hot spot for crime.From Thursday 9 October to

Sunday 12 October police arresteda number of suspects on differentoffences.On 9October when the operation

started, three people were arrestedfor possession of stolen property,four illegal immigrants were arre-sted and 27 people were arrestedfor intoxication.On 10 October the police carried

out another operation to make Bly-voor a safer place for the residents.A total of 34 people were arrested

for intoxication, four people werearrested for not having proper do-cumentation to be in South Africaand four people were arrested fortrespassing.OnSaturday, 11October thepoli-

ce continued with their operationsand they arrested seven people forshoplifting and three for intoxicati-on.On their last day of the operation

the police arrested six illegal immi-grants and ten people were arre-sted for intoxication.All the arrested people appeared

at the Oberholzer MagistratesCourt on Monday 13 October.

TheMerafong City LocalMunicipality’soffices in Carletonville were last weekthe scene of an unusual occurrence af-ter community members held a sit-into make their grievances heard.Last week Thursday a group of com-

munitymembers,which included com-munity leaders of various political par-ties and organisations from throug-hout the municipal area, attended ameeting which was supposed to be ad-dressed by the MEC (Member of theExecutive Committee) of the GautengDepartment of Human Settlementsand Co-operative Governance and Tra-ditional Affairs, Mr Jacob Mamabolo.The meeting was organised to discussthe ongoing problems and alleged ma-ladministration in the Merafong CityLocal Municipality.After it became clear that Mamabolo

was not going to attend, as he had onlysent senior officials to represent him

during the meeting, the communitymembers refused to continue with theevent.They asked the representatives to

leave the meeting and to only return ifthey bring the MEC with them.The community members also refu-

sed to leave the Old Council Chamber,where the meeting had taken place.Although a variety of police, inclu-

dingmembers of the Public Order Poli-cing (the so-called POPS) Unit, werecalled to the municipal buildings no-one was arrested.“We cannot arrest anyone because

they did not break any laws. They arelegally in the building because they we-re called to the meeting.They are alsonot damaging anything.

What one cannot understand is whyno-one from the municipality can getthem to leave the building. It seems likesomeone is running away from theirresponsibility,” indicated one of the po-lice members who were at the building

on Friday morning.As a result of the protest going on in-

side the building, members of the pu-blic were only allowed into the munici-pality’s cash hall until about middayFriday, when the group decided to leaveby themselves.“We wanted to prove that we are seri-

ous and want the municipality to beplaced under administration. We justcannot let things at the municipalitycontinue the way that it has done re-cently,” one of the sit-in’s organisers,Mr Themba Wisani, told the Herald.Wisani also explained that last

Thursday’s meeting was the third of itskind during which community mem-bers tried to convey their concerns overthe running of the municipality to theMEC.During the two previous meetings,

the first of which was held on 1 Augustthis year, the MEC also only sent repre-sentatives despite being requested toattendhimself. During the firstmeetinga memorandum with grievances wasalso submitted.Although nothing was damaged by

the group, their being in the building,however, possibly led to other activitiesalso grinding to a halt.The action took a further turn on Sa-

turday morning when Mamabolo didarrive at the Khutsong Police Station toaddress the upset residents.After he, however, did not want to ad-

dress the concerned residents as agroup inside the police station due toalleged safety concerns, he drove offagain without addressing members ofthe public.“We could not understand what the

MEC was afraid of as he had many bo-dyguards and we were all unarmed.Because no-one have helped us so

far, we have decided to establish anNGO (non-governmental organisati-on), called the Merafong CommunityPartnership Forum.We are now, as this forum, mobili-

sing to hold a legal march next weekThursday.We are not criminals and believe that

the power is in our hands if we addressMerafong’s problems in a legal way,”Wisani told the Herald on Monday.

die dorp en die seun van ‘n oud-bur-gemeester, is gearresteer en moetnog in die hof verskyn. Kor 3:23 en Sag 8:23). Alles wat onsdoen, moet tot eer van God gedoenword (1Kor 10:31).Gebed:Gee, oHe-re, dat ek liefdevol vredemet allemen-se sal najaag, sodat U teenwoordig-heid in my lewe gesien en ervaar salword!

As one of many residents in Carletonvil-le/ Khutsong/Wedela and Fochville thathave lodged complaints about variousissues on non-deliveries of basic servi-ces such as not picking up the refusedrums or replacing missing manholecovers, repairing street lights, cleaningdirty pavements, rubbish on sidewalksor dirty venues etc., I stand amazed atthe response of the Carletonville / Mera-fong municipality.

When you open and read one of thedaily news papers for example, and so-me issues has to be reported the phrasenormally starts with these wordsMr/Msthe spokesman of the SAPS or other in-stitute has released a statement andthen normally a reply or relevant infor-mation that needs to be conveyed to thepublic to keep the public abreast of theissues.

This feedback process is not preva-lent in theMerafongMunicipality’s com-munication towards their employers,the normal Merafong public. Everyweek the Carletonville Herald report onissues that affect us, the Merafong pu-blic, like openmanholes, not picking uprefuse etc.We, thepublic, have topay forthese services but these are not rende-red tous.Whenyouaskquestionsnoan-swer is given. On 26 September a local drug actioncommittee was launched at the KokosiExtension 5 Taxi Rank.

The event was organised by the De-partment of SocialDevelopment in part-nership with Merafong City.

According to a member of the actioncommittee against drugs in Kokosi,Francia Motsumi, the purpose of theevent was “to notify the community thatthere is a committee elected to deal withdrugs in Kokosi.”

The event was a success and was at-tendedby five schools from theFochvillearea: Kokosi Primary, Thuto-Kitso,Greenspark Primary, Reakgona Prima-ry, Retlile Primary School andUmfundoHigh School.

“All communities must have a LocalDrug Committee. In Merafong, only We-dela, Khustong and now, Kokosi, havesuch committees. We are preparing tolaunch the committee in Carletonville atthe end of the month,” Douglas Moledifromthemunicipality’sHealthandSoci-al Development department said during

the event.This local drug committee’s purpose

is to go around the community andschools and do awareness campaignsabout drug and substance abuse. Drugusers or parents can approach the com-mittee for help.

“The other function of this committeeis to link the people who need help withSouth African National Council on Al-choholism andDrug Dependence (SAN-CA ) because SANCAwill be able to helpthem and also send them to rehabilitati-on centres,” said Moledi.

“SANCA is an out-patient treatmentservices centre, meaning that we provi-de family counselling, relapse manage-ment, and self-help groups. Then we re-fer our patients to rehab centres and onthat note I would like to appeal to thecommunity of Merafong to please havepatience with us because we have onlytwo rehab centres. That’s why the pro-cess of sending people to rehab takes solong.The community ofMerafong iswel-come to come to our offices,” Jane Fune-ka, Social Worker at SANCA, told thosewho attended the event,

Carletonville Hospital held an openday on 3 October to showcase the ser-vices offered by the hospital to thecommunity of Merafong.This year the hospital targeted grade

9 learners from all high schools in Me-rafong. A total of 48 learners fromCar-leton Jones and Tswasongu HighSchools managed to grace the occasi-on. Even though some of the schoolscouldn’t make it due to their tight timetables, they had a huge turnout. Theknowledge acquired by the learnerswill help them to have an informed de-cisionwhen choosing subjects in grade10. In her welcoming speech, a coun-cillor from the Merafong City Local

Municipality, Ms N. Best, said govern-ment departments need to collaboratewith citizens to resolve challenges athealth care facilities. She further saidthat as public servants we should em-brace discipline in the implementationof priorities and show compassion tothe public we all serve. She finally ack-nowledged the hospital for doing itsbest in serving the community ofMera-fong.Mr Ganda, chairperson of the Carle-

tonville Hospital Board encouraged le-arners to grab as much information aspossible. He said learners should sha-re the information with other learnerswho couldn’t make it to the event.

The youngsters learned more aboutcareer paths in the health sector andwere able to witness the hospital servi-ces and those of our partners such asRight to Care, Mothusimpilo, andSANCA. The learners were greatly in-spired. Learners and communitymembers had an opportunity to visitdifferent stalls in the hospital foyer tosee and learn about these services asunit managers, staff and members ofour partners were taking themthrough each and every area.TheActingCEOofCarletonvilleHos-

pitalDr.NicholasMwangi said, “Weha-ve a range of services for which we ho-pe to recruit some of you because one

day we have to pass the baton to thenext generation. You will continue ser-ving the community of Merafong whenwe are gone. Make use of this opportu-nity because Merafong and South Afri-ca needs you.”Likewise, in her closing remarks

Matron Merriam Matandela said,“This day is actually going to give peo-ple a better understanding of the servi-ces we provide, but to students this isan opportunity for one to understandbetter the requirements for joining theprofession within the health depart-ment.” She finally thanked various lo-cal businesses for sponsoring theevent.

is geïnstalleer om seker te maak datdie betrokke inwoners wel toegang totelektrisiteit het.Die installasie is deur die munisipa-

liteit gedoen en is ‘n standaard prose-dure om op ‘n tydelike basis elektrisi-teit aan die inwoners te verskaf. Hullebetaal ook wel vir die elektrisiteit wathulle verbruik.Die bewering dat die kabel te laag is

en ‘n gevaar mag skep, is deur munisi-pale elektrisiëns ondersoek en daar isgevind, behalwe as iemand intussendaarmee gepeuter het, dat die kabelten tye van die ondersoek binne dieregulasies was.

The issue of littering touchesmany in our society asmostpeople commit this deed without thinking about it twice.Littering has become very problematic as it creates an

unfriendly environment and spreads bacteria.Many people, including a seemingly increasing num-

ber of local residents, litter without caring about the con-sequences and it is destroying the image of the communi-ty. It is not easy to change the mindsets of individualstowards this act and its effects can be shattering in thelong run. There are five major harmful effects of littering.Litter in streets and parks can travel through storm

drains, it costs money and it is a threat to public health,it can be a fire hazard and can affect the local economy.With this in mind the Herald asked some readers on

what how they felt about the problem.

Littering a huge problem

Kokosi residents are frowning over apark that was set up in the townshipby the municipality recently.

According to one of the township’sresidents, Mr Sibusiso Ndubatha, apublic park that has recently beenerected in this township is a source ofconcern for many residents.

“In terms of the IDP R1 million hasbeen set aside to establish a new parkin Kokosi. The park that was recentlybuilt next to the Popo Molefe Stadium,however consists of only three or fourchairs,” Ndubatha told the Herald.

When the Herald visited this parkon Monday, four benches and dust-bins, a long strip of paving and dryinggrass seemed to be the only improve-ments made at the facility. The parkwas not fenced off and a small familyof goats enjoyed the shade of some ofthe benches.

Several of the handrails of an oldmerry-go-round were sawed off, pre-sumably to be sold as scrapmetal whi-le an old jungle gym also stood on theproperty.

Huge heaps of rubbish lay next to the‘park’, with some of it blowing into thefacility.

The only children that could be seenin the area were not at the park, butdigging through adjacent heaps of rub-bish.

In the meantime housing is also stilla huge concern for residents of Ko-kosi, many of whom stay in shacks be-cause new housing actions in thetownship have been stalling for years.

“We have been waiting for years butthe issue regarding the development ofKokosi Extension 6 has never been re-solved,” Ndubatha told theHerald du-ring the past week.

Work to build new houses in thisplanned extension has been put onhold since 2009 due to a legal disputebetween a Fochville businessman whois the owner of the land,MrWessie vanderWesthuizen, and theMerafongCityLocal Municipality.

The municipality originally startedto develop the landdespite being infor-med by Van der Westhuizen that theland legally belongs to him.

After winning several court cases on

the matter, Van der Westhuizen wasuntil recently in a deadlock with themunicipality over the price thatshould be paid for the land.

Van der Westhuizen, however, toldthe Herald this week that he has deci-ded to stop the battle with the munici-pality and that the matter of whetherthe government should purchase theland or not has now been forwardedto the provincial government for a finaldecision.

According to a municipal spokes-man, the park next to the stadium is,however, still not complete.

“The park to be developed will be acommunity park,” the spokesman in-dicated.

“As with other community parks thepark will have the following facilities:a junior playground, an outside gym,benches and tables, a paved walkway,instant lawn, trees and 24-hour secu-rity,” the spokesman added.

“The project is in procurement stageand will be finalised before the end ofthe current municipal financial year,”the spokesman also indicated on Tu-esday.

Questions over Kokosi park

This damaged merry-go-round is currentlyone of the only things on which childrencan play in the Fochville park.

On Monday these children found it more interesting to play amongst burning rubbishthan in the park.

Despite earlier promisesby theDepart-ment of Education that the new schoolthat has been built at Kokosi will be aboarding school, it has now gone backon its word.

In a written reply that was posed bythe DA in the Gauteng Provincial Legis-lature on 7 October, the MEC for Edu-cation, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, revealedthat Fochville Secondary School will nolonger be receiving a boarding school.

“The MEC indicated that the projectwas cancelled, and that funds were tobe re-allocated to other areas in theprovince. This about-turn has led to aloss of overR10million on the feasibili-ty studies and plans for a project thatwas never going to see the light,” Ms InaCilliers, the DA’s constituency head forMerafong recently indicated.

“Yet, while the school building is rea-dy for occupation, the departmentclaims that it is still waiting for the Me-rafong Local Municipality to provide afinal building clearance - a claim vehe-

mently denied by themunicipality. Fur-thermore, the depart-ment has failed to pro-vide safe access to theschool. Currently thereare no plans for a pe-destrian bridge, nor afour-way stop or pe-destrian crossing forlearners from nearbyKokosi. Amid the bu-reaucratic bungling, abrand new, state of theart school facilitystands empty,” Cilliersadded.

When the Herald vi-sited the school onMonday, the buildingindeed looked readyto be occupied.

with a black bag, the contents of whichhe dumped on theopen ground next tothe school yard. Hethen walked back intothe school yard.

Several black bagswith rubbish had alre-ady been dumped onthe same piece of land.Despite this, a neatbuilding near theschool’s entrance wasclearly marked withthe words “refusearea”.

Although a new, pa-ved road had beenbuilt to the school, itwas by Monday stillnot linked to the mainroad that leads pastKokosi.

Despite the claim that the schoolwouldnot be accommodating boardersanymore, a sign with the wording “Ko-kosi Boarding School” was still up next

to the main road outside the schoolwhen the Herald visited the facility onMonday.

“The department completed theschool but the opening has been put in-to abeyance until the beginning of nextyear.

“Although we had identified the needby a number of learners for the schoolto be a boarding school at the time thatwe started theproject, statistics thatwestudied later showed that the extramo-ney would be used better to build newschools,” the Gauteng Department ofEducation’s spokesperson,MsPhumlaSekonyane, indicated on Tuesday.

“This is not a municipal project. Itwould be best if theHerald directed itsquestions in this regard to the respon-sible government department. Thearea however does have the necessaryland use rights and is proclaimed aspart of the town,” a spokesman for theMerafong City Local Municipality res-ponded after questions about the finalbuilding clearance was sent to the mu-nicipality.

EducationDepartment’s boarding school promise changes

Although the sign in front of thenewschool indicated that it isme-ant to be a boarding school, theDepartment of Education has de-cided that this promise is not tobecome a reality.

The new school seemed ready for occupation this week. The road in front of the school is still not linked to the main road.
