HistoryThe first education board to be set up inIndia was the Uttar Pradesh Board ofHigh School and Intermediate Educationin 1921, which was under jurisdictionof Rajputana , Central India and Gwalior .In 1929 the government of India set up a

joint Board named "Board of High Schooland Intermediate Education, Rajputana".This included Ajmer , Merwara, CentralIndia and Gwalior.Later it was confinedto Ajmer , Bhopal and Vindhya Pradesh.In 1952, it became the "Central Board of

Secondary Education".

At PresentFrom 309 schools in 1962 theBoard today has 8979 schoolson 31-03-2007 including 141schools in 21 countries. Thereare 897 Kendriya Vidyalayas,1761 Government Schools,

5827 Independent Schools, 480Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalayasand 14 Central Tibetean

Schools.

Decentralization

In order to execute its functionseffectively Regional Offices have beenset up by the Board in different parts ofthe country to be more responsive to theaffiliated schools.

The Board has regional offices in Allahabad , Ajmer, Chennai, Guwahati,Panchkula and Delhi. Schools locatedoutside India are looked after by regional

office Delhi. The headquarter constantlymonitors the activities of the RegionalOffices. Although, sufficient powers havebeen vested with the Regional Offices.Issues involving policy matters are,however, referred to the head office.

Financial Structure

CBSE is a self-financing bodywhich meets the recurring andnon-recurring expenditure withoutany grant-in-aid either from theCentral Govt. or from any othersource. All the financialrequirements of the Board are met

ICSE vs. CBSECBSE approves both English and Hindilanguage as the medium of instructions,CISCE or ICSE does not recommendHindi. CBSE allows both regularcandidates as well as private candidatesfrom non-affiliated schools to appear inthe exams. CBSE is recognized by Indiangovernment and ICSE is not. CBSE iscomparatively easier than ICSE, syllabuswise. ICSE lays more emphasis on labwork. ICSE has made it compulsory toinclude environmental education as one

of the subjects
