Sacred Sounds of Ryukyu

　2 月 12 日、特別レクチャー・コンサート「琉球の祈りの響き」のために沖縄から約 20 名の歌い手が来てくれました。沖縄の音楽といえばすでに全国でよく知られているものですが、今回の企画ではまだほとんど知られていない２種類の祈りの音楽をとりあげました。前半、まずは伝統宗教の音楽ウムイとケーナを紹介。これらの祭祀歌謡は現在も沖縄で歌われていますが、ステージで演奏されることは滅多にないものです。続いて、民族音楽研究家の比嘉悦子氏による沖縄祭祀歌謡についての講演とビデオ・プレゼンテーション、そして沖縄音楽グループのリーダーである高江洲義寛氏、宗教音楽センターのマット・ギランを加えた３者によるディスカッションを行いました。　後半の座開きには、三線など沖縄の楽器の伴奏で宮廷舞踊『かぎやで風節』と、花城英樹氏のソロ『仲風節』。琉球語の讃美歌が、やはり三線の伴奏でそれに続きました。琉球語讃美歌の一曲目は、1913 年に琉球語に翻訳され、近年、高江洲氏が曲を付けた『主の祈り』。讃美歌はすべて『ていんさぐぬ花』や『赤田首里殿内』などの沖縄民謡にのせたものでした。最後は、高江洲氏の前衛的なピアノの響きで締めくくられました。　今回は来場数 600 名を超える大盛会となりました。チャペルに沖縄の空気をもたらしてくれた紅

On February 12th the SMC was visited by a group of some 20

singers from Okinawa for the special lecture-concert ‘Sacred Sounds

of Ryukyu’. While Okinawan music is quite well known throughout

Japan, this concert presented two little-known ritual music traditions.

The first half of the event featured performances of the traditional

Ryukyuan sacred genres umui and kwēna, still performed in villages

throughout Okinawa, but rarely in stage performances. Following

this, the Okinawan music scholar Etsuko Higa gave a talk and video

presentation on Okinawan ritual music, and was subsequently joined

by Gikan Takaesu, leader of the Okinawan music group, and SMC’s

Matt Gillan, for a roundtable discussion.

The second half of the event began with the court dance

Kajadifū bushi, accompanied by sanshin songs and other Okinawan

instruments, and a performance of the solo song Nakafū bushi by

Hideki Hanashiro. The group then performed a selection of Christian

hymns and songs in the Ryukyuan language, also accompanied by

sanshin. The first of these was a version of the Lord’s prayer, translated

into Ryukyuan in 1913, and recently set to music for the first time

by Takaesu. The following songs were all based on Okinawan folk

melodies, including Tinsagu nu hana and Akata Sundunchi. The event

was rounded off by the contemporary sounds of Takaesu on the piano.

The event was very well attended by more than 600 people,

and we were thankful to the many people who helped with the event,

including the loan of a beautiful woven bingata cloth which brought

an Okinawan atmosphere to the chapel.

　今回の演奏会では、19 世紀にドイツとフランスで活躍した F. メンデルスゾーン、C. フランク、J. ブラームスの作品を弾かせていただきます。この３人に共通するのは J.S. バッハを尊敬し、多大な影響を受けていること。そしてフランクの「コラール第２番」とブラームスの「11 のコラール前奏曲」は、奇しくも彼らの遺作でもあります。私にとって思い出深い ICU のチャペルで、色々な想いや祈りを込めてオルガンと向き合いたいと思います。

　プログラムのテーマは 20 世紀の音楽です。今年没後 50 年にあたるフランスのジャンヌ・ドゥメッシュー、ドイツのマックス・レーガー、そして私の故郷のベルギーからフロール・ペーテルスの作品を選びました。ドゥメッシューは、20 世紀で最も優れたオルガニストの一人でしたが、47 歳という若さで亡くなりました。日本ではほとんど演奏されることがありませんが、この機会に知っていただけたら嬉しいです。

The theme of this program is the music of the

20th century. I have selected the compositions of the

French composer Jeanne Demessieux, who died 50

years ago this year, as well as the German Max Reger,

and Flor Peeters, a fellow Belgian. Demessieux, one of

the most accomplished organists of the 20th century,

passed away at the age of only 47. Her compositions

are almost never played in Japan, and I would be

happy if this concert could be an opportunity for her

compositions to be more widely known here.

In this recital I will play compositions by the

19th century composers F. Mendelssohn, C. Franck and

J. Brahms, active in Germany and France. All of these

3 composers were profoundly influenced by J.S. Bach,

for whom they had the greatest respect. Both Franck’s

Choral II en si mineur and Brahms’ Elf Choralvorspiele

Op.122 are the last pieces these composers wrote in

their lives. I look forward to playing these pieces in the

ICU chapel, a place that holds a special place in my

heart.

　４月の演奏会の頃には桜に囲まれた美しいキャンパスに変化していることでしょう。暖かい太陽の日差しの中で草花や木々が力強く芽吹いている姿、少し湿った土の香り、鳥たちの鳴き声。今回のオルガンコンサートでは、そんな生命の輝きを感じられるプログラムを中心に構成しました。みずみずしい音楽が皆さまの春の訪れに色を添えられますように。

By the time of this concert in

April, I imagine the ICU campus will be

adorned with cherry blossoms, and the

plants and animals will have become

reinvigorated in the warmth of the sun. I

time to reflect the joy of new life, and

♪ Organ for Kids ♪

　佐藤氏は ICU 卒業後、ギリシア悲劇

の上演を中心に演劇活動を続けてこられ、またギリシアの工房で製作された古代ギリシア風竪琴の演奏家としての活動も続けておられます。今回の講演の中では竪琴の材料やメカニズム、古代ギリシアの宗教儀礼における音楽の重要性、音階（調、旋律型）と文字記譜法などについてご説明くださいました。お話におり混ぜて、碑文に文字記譜が刻まれていた「アポロン讃歌第 1」、パピルス写本に文字記譜が記されていたエウリピデスによる悲劇『オレステス』の合唱隊歌の一部などの古代ギリシアの音楽の再現演奏に加え、アイスキュロスによる悲劇『アガメムノン』の合唱隊歌「ゼウス讃歌」やレスボス島の女流詩人サッフォーの歌詞に佐藤氏が古代ギリシアの旋律型に基づいて作曲した創作も含めて竪琴弾き語りを披露してくださいました。会場を埋め尽くした聴衆の方々に古代ギリシア音楽の魅力を堪能していただくことができました。

After graduating from ICU, Futaba Sato has been active as an actor and director of Greek tragedy, as well as being a performer of the ancient Greek lyre. In her public lecture in October 2017 she talked about the construction of the lyre, the importance of music in ancient Greek rites, as well as the scales and notation systems used in ancient Greece. Her talk was interspersed with performances, including Hymn to Apollo reconstructed from a stone inscription, and a song from Euripides’ tragedy Orestes, reconstructed from a papyrus manuscript. Sato also played and sang her own settings of the Hymn to Zeus from Aeschylus’ Agamemnon and verse by the Lesbos poet Sappho, based on ancient Greek melodic patterns. The hall was packed with an audience who enjoyed this fascinating introduction to the music of ancient Greece.

　ICU チャペル , 宗教音楽センターにある森オルガン、シーベリーチャペルの大中小のオルガンを探検。最後は大オルガンでの演奏を聴いて、弾いて、大満足の子供たちでした！ Kids studied organs of 3 different sizes. They were excited to play the chapel organ.

　探検を録音しながら、録音を探検する小川氏。奄美諸島の鳥の声を亜熱帯の空気と一緒に録る。ニューヨーク地下道での演奏を、人々が行き交う雑踏を包む空気と共に録る。録音はどこまでその場まるごとホンモノの情景を持ってこられるのか？そして、そこからホンモノ以上の何を創造できるのか？録音で探検する小川氏が開拓する新境地を、美しい写真と共にお楽しみ下さい。

Hiroshi Ogawa is a journeyman through sound, documenting the world through recording

the places he visits. His CD releases have incorporated the sounds of subtropical nature in the Amami

islands, the performances of street musicians in the New York subway, and other soundscapes of

everyday life. In this talk Ogawa will discuss his approaches to capturing the atmosphere of a space

through sound. The talk will also feature Ogawa’s photographs.

編集室 　ICU 勤務で私が楽しんでいることのひとつが、このキャンパスの豊かな自然です。特に、竹にはずっと魅了されてきました。祖国イギリスで

は自然の中でこれだけの大きさに育つのを見たことがないということ、また、日本音楽の伝統の中で、多くの楽器に使われてきた素材だということもあります。何十年も前に尺八に出会ったのが私と日本音楽のなれそめですが、その後も能管、龍笛、篠笛などに親しんできました。日本各地を旅行している時も、つい笛を作るのに良い竹を探し、この自然素材を素晴らしい楽器に作り変える職人の方々に尊敬の念を募らせます。

『琉球の祈りの響き』では、沖縄出身の方のご好意で貸して頂いた、美しく染め上げられた紅

びんがた

型の布（幅６メートル）をいかにして礼拝堂に飾るかという命題に突き当たり、竹の別の利用法も見つけました。昨年のICU 祭で、キャンパスの豊富な竹で屋台を設営した生徒たちのアイディアを思い出し、竹を切り出し、布をつるす枠を組み立てることに成功しました。これを礼拝堂内のオーストリア製リーガー・オルガンの横に設置したのですが、沖縄の工芸品、竹、そしてパイプオルガンのミスマッチは妙に印象的な空間を創成し、礼拝堂の雰囲気を全く変容させたのでした。　ICU の自然の豊かさを感じる事件は昨秋にもありました。礼拝堂のパイプオルガンの中からキイキイ ... と鳴き声がして、鳥からヤモリまで諸説出ましたが冬の到来と共に消えました。春の訪れと共にその音が戻っ

てくるかどうか、今注視しているところです。 (M.G.)

追悼　 林 佑子先生

　大学礼拝堂のリーガー・オルガン設置に尽力された林佑子先生が 2018 年 1 月 7 日にご逝去されました。88 歳でした。聖公会の牧師の長女として横浜で生まれ、東京音楽学校のオルガン科をご卒業後渡米され、40 年以上ボストンにあるニューイングランド音楽院のオルガン科教授を務められました。1970 年の ICU リーガー・オルガン設置の際はオルガン設置委員メンバーとして関わり、オルガンの奉献記念演奏もなさいました。その後 ICU 客員教授としてしばらく留まり、当時まだ珍しかったパイプオルガンの存在を広く世に知らせる一端を担ってくださいました。天国での平安をお祈りいたします。

Obituary

It is with sadness that we report the death of Yuko Hayashi, who played an important role in the installation of the Rieger Organ in the ICU chapel in 1970. She passed away on 7th January 2018, at the age of 88. Hayashi was the first daughter of a chaplain in Yokohama. After graduating from Tokyo College of Music (organ major) she became a professor of New England Conservatory in Boston, teaching organ performance there for more than 40 years. Hayashi was a member of the Organ Installation Committee for ICU’s Rieger organ, and performed at the organ dedication concert in 1970. While serving as a visiting professor at ICU, she devoted herself to the dissemination of organ music, which was still little known in Japan at the time. May she rest in peace.

　 One of the things I most enjoy about living and working at ICU is

the abundant nature that we enjoy on campus. I have long been fascinated

by bamboo, partly because it is never found growing naturally in my home

country of England, and partly because it is used in so many Japanese musical

traditions. My introduction to Japanese music began with the shakuhachi

many years ago, and I have dabbled in various other Japanese bamboo flutes

such as nohkan, ryuteki and shinobue over the years. Whenever I travel in

the Japanese countryside I am usually on the lookout for suitable bamboo for

flute-making, and am in awe of the craftspeople who are able to transform this

natural resource into such exquisite musical instruments. I found a further use

for bamboo during our recent Okinawan music event in the University chapel,

when we were confronted with the problem of displaying a large and beautiful

dyed Okinawan bingata cloth that had been loaned to us for the event. Inspired

by a student group who had made use of ICU's abundant bamboo groves to

construct food stalls at last year's ICU festival, we decided to try something

similar, and after harvesting suitable lengths, eventually managed to assemble

a bamboo construction on which to hang the fabric. There was something very

appealing about the divine mismatch between the Okinawan artwork, the

bamboo, and the Austrian Rieger organ next to which it was installed for the

event, and it certainly changed the atmosphere of the chapel.

Another reminder of the abundant nature on campus came in

autumn with a squeaking noise coming from somewhere inside the Rieger

organ. Despite a thorough search, the source could not be found, and theories

ranged from a small bird to a lizard. The sound seems to have gone away over

the winter, but we await to see if it comes back as the ICU campus comes back

to life with the warm weather in the next few months. 　(M.G.)
