Our family’s story:
Wing Yui Choie (1924-1994) provided us with some information on the history of the Choie family, also known in New Zealand as the Sew Hoy family. He countsback thirty generations from his grandfather Kang Lem Sew Hoy (1888-1940) to the Ming Dynasty when Cheung Gong, the original ancestor, went to Sha Kongvillage.
Cheung Gong had four sons: Yao Choi, Yao Tsing, Dai Jai and Dai Ming. Our family is descended from the fourth son, Dai Ming. Dai Ming had two sons; the olderson was Yak Cheuw and the second son was Mao Gui. Our family is descended from the older son, Yak Cheuw. Yak Cheuw’s son was Bing Sum.
Bing Sum had four sons. They were Sew Hoy, Sew Ding, Sew Hong and Sew Kung. Our family is descended from Bing Sum’s oldest son, Sew Hoy.Choie Sew Hoy Born in 1838, the son of a farmer, he was raised in the tiny village of Sha Kong [Altar Hill]. Sha Kong, which then had only about 200 inhabitants, isin the Upper Panyu [Poon Yue] district of Guangdong [Kwangtung] Province in China.
As a young man Choie Sew Hoy went to the goldfields of California and Victoria. In 1868 he came to Otago and set up in business in Stafford Street as a merchant. He supplied miners and goldfield traders, imported goods, exported fungus [muk yee] and invested widely in gold mining and water-race ventures.
In 1888 Choie Sew Hoy’s company built the world’s first gold dredge to work the Big Beach claim on the Shotover River in Central Otago. The huge Nokomai hy-draulic sluicing operation in Southland was the biggest of its type in New Zealand.
Choie Sew Hoy was naturalised in 1873 and became a notable figure in both European and Chinese circles. He was fluent in English and signed his letters in English‘Sew Hoy’. This was mistaken for his family name and he became known by Europeans as ‘Mr Sew Hoy’ and ‘Charles Sew Hoy’. He adopted the name, and many ofhis descendants in New Zealand have Sew Hoy as their family name.
Our Family’s Story
Note:The transliteration of Chinese characters into the Roman alphabet can be a problem. Our family name has at various times been written as Chui, Tsui, Xu and Choie. All these names are represented by the same Chinese character. In New Zealand, Choie Sew Hoy found that Sew Hoy was taken to be his family name. It was adopted by him and some of his descendants.

Choie Sew Hoy’s story:Born in 1838, the son of a farmer, Choie Sew Hoy was raised in his ancestral village of Sha Kong (She Gang) [Altar Hill]. Sha Kong, which then had only about 200 inhabitants, is20 km north of Canton (Guangzhou) in the Upper Panyu (Poon Yue) district of Kwangtung (Guangdong) Province in China. After gold was found in California, Australia and New Zealand, many families in Cantonese villages sent young men out to ‘The Gold Mountain’ to earn money for the family. Theyoften went in family or regional groups, so that there was a constant stream of young Chinese men setting out and returning across the Pacific. As a young man Choie Sew Hoy firstwent to the goldfields of California where he worked as a miner and then to Victoria where he set up as a merchant. In 1865 the Otago Provincial Council invited the Chinese miners of Victoria to come to the Otago goldfields. Choie Sew Hoy arrived in Otago in 1868 and set up business in StaffordStreet as a merchant, supplying miners and goldfield traders. He imported goods, outfitted miners, exported fungus [muk yee] and invested widely in gold mining and water-raceconstruction. His two sons Kum Yok and Kum Poy both came out to Otago to join their father in this family enterprise.
Choie Sew Hoy had eleven major gold mining operations, including parts of the Shotover River, and the Queen Victoria quartz mine at Macetown. In 1888 one of Choie Sew Hoy’scompanies built the world’s first successful gold dredge, to work his Big Beach claim on the Shotover River near Queenstown in Central Otago. His four dredges were the first to beable to work river flats, and could earn up to £40 a day. This revolutionised gold mining methods and started the first Otago dredging boom, using dredges based on the Sew Hoydesign. In 1894 Choie Sew Hoy and Kum Poy used their hydraulic mining experience to begin the huge Nokomai hydraulic elevating and sluicing operation in Southland. This mine becamethe biggest of its type in New Zealand.
Choie Sew Hoy was naturalised in 1873 and became a notable figure in both European and Chinese circles. He gave widely to charity, regularly attended race meetings and was aFreemason. He was one of the Dunedin commercial leaders who marched in William Larnach’s funeral procession, campaigned to end the opium trade, and signed the illuminatedaddress of welcome to the visiting Governor, Sir James Fergusson. By 1882 he owned freehold land in Otago and Southland worth £4,432.
The daughter of Choie Sew Hoy’s dredge-master recalled him as ‘a well-dressed, kind gentleman who always brought gifts and sweets for her family’, while his 1901 obituary in theOtago Daily Times referred to ‘his reputation for upright and honourable dealing’.
Choie Sew Hoy was fluent in English and signed his English letters ‘Sew Hoy’. This was mistaken for his family name and he became known to Europeans in New Zealand as ‘MrSew Hoy’ and ‘Charles Sew Hoy’.
Choie Sew Hoy had four children by his first wife, Young Soy May. There were two daughters, Choie Chay Ho and Choie Chay May, and two sons. The two sons were Choie KumYok [Golden Jade] 1855-1932 and Choie Kum Poy [Golden Upholder]
Choie Sew Hoy had two children by his second wife, the New Zealand-born Eliza Prescott (1869-1909), who had worked for him as an English secretary. They were Violet ElizaKum Fon [Golden Phoenix] Sew Hoy, born in 1892, and Henry William Kum Loon [Golden Dragon] Sew Hoy, born in 1895.
Choie Sew Hoy was always concerned for the welfare of people from the Pan Yu and he was a leading member of the Cheong Shing Tong – the welfare group which cared for thepoor and elderly among them. It operated from his store in Stafford Street. In 1883 Choie Sew Hoy helped organise the sending of the bodies of 230 miners back to China for burial atancestral sites. He died in 1901 and unfortunately his own body was part of a second shipment of 498 former miners, which was lost at sea, when the Ventnor sank off Hokitika in1902. Choie Sew Hoy’s biographer Dr James Ng notes,‘It is still remembered, however, that he wished to be buried in the Cheong Shing Tong’s cemetery in Upper Panyu, with thebodies of otherwise friendless former associates buried around him.’
By the start of the 21st Century Choie Sew Hoy had well over four hundred direct descendants, not only in China and New Zealand but also spread around the world.

(Choie Kum Yok)
Choie Kum Yok Born in Sha Kong village in 1855, Choie Kum Yok came to New Zealand as a young man to join his father ChoieSew Hoy and help with the family business. He held shares in the Sew Hoy dredging operations. In 1897 he returned to China, and inthe city of Guangzhou [Canton] he ran the Chinese part of the Sew Hoy family business.
The general merchandise company in Guangzhou was called Cheong On, with interests in warehouses, finance, general merchandise, timber trading, firewood, and cinemas. Cheong On also marketed salt in bulk, shipping to large parts of Guangdong [Kwangtung]Province using chartered boats. Kum Yok also managed the Wui On Company in Hong Kong, a financial and trading service for
migrants from Upper Panyu, many of them men going to work as miners or market gardeners in New Zealand.
At that time, people could not remit money overseas through banks; the only way was through financial companies like Wui On. Wui On also acted as BuyingAgents and Exporters for the family General Merchant business in New Zealand.
Choie Kum Yok had three wives, nine sons and five daughters. His first wife had one son, Kang Lem. Then she died and he remarried. His second wife had sixsons and two daughters. When she died Kum Yok married again and his third wife had two sons and three daughters.
When Choie Kum Yok died at his home in Guangzhou in 1932, his body lay in state for 49 days, as a mark ofthe respect in which he was held. The family chartered a train to take his large coffin, as well as family members, relatives and friends from Guangzhou, to his home village of Sha Kong, for a huge funeral service and burial. Thiswas followed by seven days of free banquets for everyone in the nearby area.

Kum Poy Sew Hoy, 1865-1942
Born: 1865In: Sha KongFather: Choie Sew HoyMother: Young Soy May
Born in Sha Kong village in 1865, Choie Kum Poy came to New Zealand in 1882 at the age of 15. He was educated atDunedin’s Normal School and was fluent in spoken and written English. In 1897, when his brother Choie Kum Yok returned to China, Kum Poy remained in Dunedin. The two brothers thusbecame responsible for the New Zealand and Chinese ends of the family enterprises. Kum Poy was the secretary of thegold sluicing operation at Nokomai and, after his father died in 1901, Kum Poy also took over the running of the SewHoy store. Like his father, he became known as Sew Hoy, rather than Choie, and he adopted this name.
Kum Poy Sew Hoy had two wives. He had one son, Choie Kang Niel, by hisfirst wife, Kong Ching Lam, in China. Kang Niel married and had twodaughters. In 1899, in Dunedin, Kum Poy Sew Hoy married Louisa Mong, daughter of Chau Mong, a Lawrence merchant, and they had nine children.
Kum Poy’s major achievement was the further development of the Nokomaigoldfield where he and his father had begun large-scale sluicing in the 1890s.Kum Poy and his father had invested large sums of money, and floated a publiccompany.By the 1930s the mining at Nokomai required a largeworkforce and used complex machinery including a drag-bucket which held six tons. Kum Poy made a large loan toJames Fletcher, whose company also played a big part in theNokomai mining and helped launch the Fletchers Coy toprosperity.Later Sir James Fletcher said of Kum Poy that he was “aremarkable man whose word was his bond and even in adver-sity he never accepted defeat.”Kum Poy Sew Hoy died in 1942 and was buried in his manda-rin’s robes in the Southern Cemetery, in a grave site originallyselected for his father.

In 1911 she married John (Sonny)Trengrove, who wasone of the founders of the Trengrove & Barton butcher business in Manse Street, and later owned the Grand Excelsior and EuropeanHotels in Dunedin. They had two children Iris Margaret Trengrove (born 8 June 1912) and Audrey Lilian Trengrove (born 23 No-vember 1914) before being divorced.Violet then married Maitland William Hoggan (1900-1962) in 1922. They had two children, William Maitland Hoggan (born 5 Sep-tember 1923) and Anita Nancy Hoggan (born 11 Sep 1927).When Maitland Hoggan abandoned her, shortly after the birth of Nancy, Violet had to raise her children by herself, a major effortduring the Great Depression of the 1930s but she ensured they were well looked after and educated. Her descendants include threedoctors, a musician, and an RAF squadron-leader. Violet died on 24 Feb 1972 in Christchurch, aged 79.

87Daphne Sew Hoy’s MemoriesDaphne Marjoribanks Sew Hoy.Daughter of Henry and Gladys Sew Hoy.Born 4 Nov 1919 in Queenstown.Married Alan Judson in St Kilda Anglican Church, Dunedin in 1948.Lived in Dunedin.Retired to Nelson. Living in Monaco, Nelson.
A. Daphne on early days in Queenstown:"I was born in our house down by the lake, right next to the gas-works. Just a week after we moved to Stanley Street, the gas-works blew up."
B. Daphne on her mother, Gladys Dunlop:"My mother's family, the Dunlops, ostracised her because she married a Chinese. She always wrote Sew Hoy as Sewhoy, all one word, to make it seem English."[Henry Sew Hoy (1895-1970) married Gladys Dunlop (1891-1962) in Queenstown in 1917. Henry’s Chinese name was Kum Loon: Golden Dragon. He was knownas Harry.]
C. Daphne on attitudes to her ancestry:"Everyone's interested now. Attitudes change as the years go by. In my day, it was all hidden. Young men would say 'I can't marry you, because you're part-Chinese.In Dunedin, after we were married, we were ostracised because I was part-Chinese."
"My grandson Aaron is fascinated.’I'm part-Chinese,' he says. He brought a friend in and said,'This is my grandmother: she's Chinese.'And his friend said, 'You don't look Chinese.’”[Daphne and Alan Judson had had two sons, Peter (born 1951) and Jon (born 1954). Peter and his wife Annie have two children, Kelsey (born 1989) and Aaron (born1991).]
“I had the same thing when I was living in Dunedin. Hugh Sew Hoy always invited me to his children's weddings and sat me at the family table, and people wouldask who I was. 'You don't look Chinese,' they'd say.”
Source: Phone conversation Daphne Judson (nee Sew Hoy), with Trevor Agnew,Thursday 13th February 2003.
D. Daphne writes about her Queenstown memories:“Dad [Henry Sew Hoy] had records of all the Chinese miners, gardeners and labourers, etcetera, who were buried in the Queenstown, Frankton and Glenorchydistricts. He looked after our only surviving Chinese gardener, who had a wonderful vegetable garden on the Frankton Road. He couldn’t speak English but under-stood us. He was always kind to us when we went to pick our strawberries, but I had seen him chase off other boys with his fork.”[Daphne is referring to her brothers William (1917-75), Roger (1924-1992) and sister Valerie (born 1927).]
“It was so sad to see him walking down to the village to buy his needs. His shoes always looked several sizes too large. Dad visited him every day when his healthdeteriorated and put him in hospital, where he died. Then he arranged a nice grave and permanent headstone for him in the Queenstown cemetery, in the Chinesesection. His name was Ah Gum. He died in 1937.”[Ah Gum is a term of respect for an older person. It has a meaning similar to Uncle.Ah Gum is mentioned on p. 328 of ‘Windows on a Chinese Past’, Vol 1, by James Ng.]

89Why have we set up this family Web site?
This family tree was developed at the request of Justin Sew Hoy and other family members, who wanted to build a complete genealogy of Choie Sew Hoy’sdescendants. We gathered some information ourselves and many family members have given us help.We know there will be errors and gaps. We are relying on everyone who reads this to send us the facts we don’t have.
You can send corrections and additions to any of these family members:Mike CHUI ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [email protected] SEW HOY ----------------------------------------------------------------- [email protected] SEW HOY------------------------------------------------------------------ [email protected] SEW HOY ------------------------------------------------------------------ [email protected] SEW HOY ------------------------------------------------------------------- [email protected] AGNEW ------------------------------------------------------------------ [email protected] Kwong Hap--------------------------------------------------------------- [email protected] JUDSON---------------------------------------------------------------------- ??
What information is needed? We need more facts and we need more people’s stories.
We Need Facts:* Names, especially women’s names.* Correct spellings, with Chinese characters and/or Roman alphabet versions.* Dates for births, deaths and marriages.* Locations of births, deaths and marriages.* Family contact details: mail address, phone number, e-mail.
Interview family members who are still living. Talk to surviving relatives and friends. Do you have letters, certificates or wedding invitations that containinformation?Family photographs are important. Make sure names, dates and places are included. When you have gathered your materials and written your relative’s story, show it to your own family and see if they can add to it.Then send either of us a copy, please:
We Need People’s Stories:Think of your parents and grandparents. Now is the time to record their story.* Dates, birthplace?* Where were they brought up? Where were they educated?* What did they do for a living? Where? Any special interests?* Did they travel, change countries, make special visits?* Military service? Clubs and voluntary groups?* What was their proudest achievement?* What stories do family members recall about them?* Are there photographs? Can you provide names and dates?
