CALL FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS

Mission  Statement  

Coast Tsimshian Academy is committed to excellence in education. We provide a safe,

nurturing environment where students are encouraged to reach their full potential, to

become socially responsible citizens and to pursue life long learning.

Educational  Vision  

The members of Lax Kw’alaams community expect high educational standards in order

that all students have the opportunity to reach their academic potential. The expectation

is for Coast Tsimshian Academy to meet or exceed Canadian academic standards while

respecting our Tsimshian culture.

The School Board has the ultimate decision-making and authority for discharging all

responsibilities as outlined in the CTA Management Agreement, the Society Acts, the

Independent School Act of British Columbia and AANDC as well as all matters relating

to finances, strategic planning, appointment of auditor, hiring of the principal,

development of policies and procedures, budgets and financial reporting. The School

Board is accountable to students, parents, the community of Lax Kw’alaams,

government agencies, and institutional partners. A yearly educational report will be

provided to Council on the pertinent outcomes of each academic year.

The School Board is currently looking to fill four (4) positions:

• Candidates  must  be  individuals  who  are  not  current  employees  of  Coast  Tsimshian  

Academy;  who  are  at  least  19  years  of  age  and  who  would  like  to  volunteer  for  a    1  or  2    

year  term  on  the  School  Board.    Persons  standing  for  election  must  be  members  of  the    

Lax  Kw  alaams  Band  and  be  committed  to  actively  supporting    the  academic  

achievement  of  all  CTA  students.  

• Two  positions  will  be  for  a  one  year  term  and  two  positions  will  be  for  a  two  year  term.    

Participation on the School Board is an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of the

ongoing development and positive evolution of the Coast Tsimshian Academy school

community as it strives to provide the highest standard of education for all students.

The election process for Board membership on the CTA School Board must be guided

by the school’s Vision, Purpose, Core Values and Educational Framework.

Those Band Members who have a strong commitment to education and dedication to

ensuring that CTA is the best educational system on the north-west coast are

encouraged to come forward.

Board members will commit to attending monthly meetings of the Board of Directors,

and will be prepared to chair a committee or working group. Band Members with skills

and expertise in education, public relations, finance, law, community engagement and

other relevant areas are especially welcome. Previous Board experience is not required.
