얀 페르메이르에 대해서는 정확한 기록이 많이 남아 있지 않아요. 아주 간단한 자료들만 가지고 그의 생애를 짐작할 수 있을 뿐이지요.

자료에 따르면, 페르메이르가 1632년 네덜란드의 델프트라는 도시에서 태어났다는 사실만은 분명해요.

페르메이르의 아버지는 원래 화가였지만 가족의 생계를 책임져야 했기 때문에 많은 그림을 그리지 못했어요. 그래서 미술상을 하며

‘날아다니는 여우’라는 이름의 여관을 운영했다는 것이 기록으로 남아 있지요.

얀 페르메이르 이야기

페르메이르는 그림을

아주 오랫동안 그렸어요.

한 장면을 그리더라도 대상을

오랫동안 유심히 관찰하고 난 뒤에

그리기 시작했지요.

물감도 보통 사람들이

흔히 쓰는 물감 대신, 자기가

직접 만든 것을 쓰는

꼼꼼한 화가였대요.

주로 평온한 실내의 모습을

배경으로 삼았던 페르메이르는

집 안에서 흔히 쓰는 가구나 소품,

도구들을 많이 그렸어요.

그것은 옛날 사람들이

어떻게 살았는지를 짐작할 수 있는

귀한 자료가 되고 있지요.

그런데 페르메이르는 완성된

그림에는 별로 신경을 쓰지 않았어요.

그림에 자신의 이름을 적거나

그림을 그린 날짜를 적는 일도

빠뜨리기 일쑤였지요. 그러다 보니

가짜 그림을 페르메이르가 그린

그림으로 속여서 팔려는 사람들도

아주 많았대요.

많은 사람이 이 작품을 <진주 귀고리

를 한 소녀>라고 부르는데, 원래 제

목은 <터번을 두른 소녀>예요. 사람

들은 이 작품을 ‘북유럽의 모나리자’

라고도 불러요.

만족하지 못하는 그림은 절대

남에게 보여 주지 않았다고 해요.

귀족들이 그림을 주문하고서

빨리 보여 달라고 재촉을 해도

만족스럽게 그릴 때까지 그림을

보여 주지 않아

종종 다투기도 했었대요.

당신이 갖다 준 편지는 내 동생의 편지였답니다.

세상 사람들은 나를 이상하다고 손가락질했지만,

동생은 나를 사랑으로 대해 주었지요.

그동안의 고마움은 이 그림으로 대신합니다.
