Concept Statement

Creativity abounds in this first floor

restaurant incorporating a creative

eclectic Spanish architectural theme,

regenerating the concept made

popular in the 1920’s and 1930’s. An

upbeat color scheme will establish an

abstract motif throughout the open

floor footprint.

The walls will be completed with a knocked down

Spanish texture, faux painted, and glazed in an

attempt of continuing with the imaginative artistic

composition of the space. The interior color scheme

will revolve around earth tone hues.

Located in Gainesville, Florida in an existing 3,300

square foot building on 1313 University Avenue, will

be owned and operated by Jane McGrath and

Phyllis Lewis. The interior offers a state-of-the-art

functional space not only stimulating the owner’s

love of cooking, baking, and socializing, but will also

generate an inviting scenario for its dining guests.

Juxtaposed to the dining room will be the “Blue Surf Lounge” capable of serving not only cocktails but

specialty house appetizers, while customers listen to subtle music. The open ceiling over the semi-

private dining room will incorporate natural lighting with ambient recessed fixtures in an ornate

hanging array of ornate elements from the ceiling giving the appearance of free floating. 11

The success of Cleveland’s Bay

House Bistro will be evident, not only

through the understanding of

historical reuse, but also incorporating

the city of Cleveland’s culture and

local cuisine.

Along with a historical Spanish style architecture, integrating serpentine soffits with the existing historical

elements of the Chrysler building, arches over doors, prominent windows, and antiqued stucco walls, all

factors which will enhance the overall experience while dining at

The success of this

project was entirely

dependent on the

ability to listen and

understand what is

important to the

clients, while

appreciating the

opportunity to

incorporate creativity

to fulfil contractual

obligations.

Life safety, programming, interior design, color palettes, furnishings, art and accessories were all incorporated in

creating the overall themed motif of the restaurant. More often than not, creating an interior presents significant

challenges for the designer; elements that acknowledge and emulate the theme must be integrated in a cohesive,

comfortable design that is satiating to the clients. The programming must assimilate in a way that allows both

functionality and form to coexist in harmony without one dominating the other.

Evening Sail” by Tommy Cherry

The project “The Raven” Bay Village Art Gallery

consists of a leased 2,982 square feet tenant space

located on the first floor of an existing historical

building in Bay Village, Boston, MA. The Raven

offers an excellent opportunity to explore historical

preservation and adaptive reuse in developing an

upbeat art gallery.

19

The Raven will offer great works by well known and

lesser known artists, like up and coming Boston

native, “Tommy Cherry” and support a wide range of

tastes, to satiate every art appetite, and introduce the

guest to a varied range of options in terms of price,

subject matter, size, artist and media.

The neighborhood is directly adjacent to Park Square and Boston’s

theater district and is known as the birthplace of the famous

American poet and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe.

As interior designers it is important to recognize the

client's own cultural diversity level and integrate this

with today's current styles and design trends.

Researching and understanding genealogy as it relates

to different cultures, religious practices and lifestyles is

an important element when tailoring specifically to an

individual client and processing this information from

the client to determine their life-style needs; daily

routine rituals, entertaining dynamics, religious

customs, cultural draw and beliefs, dreams, and

expectations.

The interior aesthetics will incorporate a creative brand with a motivating theme promoting XENO's mission to their

upscale, progressive, and traditional clothing store clients. The programming will be completed considering all building

codes, ADA standards, universal design, way finding, and safety regulations. Common use areas such as the

breakroom, restrooms, conference rooms, and record storage areas were located in the center of the floor plan,

allowing the perimeter areas to take full advantage of daylight zoning and incorporating direct, diffused and//or reflected

daylight to supplement the lighting demands. (Benefits include greater satisfaction with the interior environment for

building occupants and lower ongoing energy costs for XENO.

The design concept was accomplished

through the process of analyzing

programmatic information and creating

conceptual direction to establish an

association between spatial volume and

surface treatments.

The floor plan is not only functional and

esthetically designed but takes into

consideration important human factors. The

kitchen/dining room depicts a well-designed

space for creating meals and as a social

gathering area for family functions or

entertaining clients/guests.

Focal points were established in each room to draw attention and evoke

interest while occupying the space. For example skylights designed over

the exterior fenestrations were incorporated to elongate the physical height.
