10 years birthday: COMPETITION TIME!

Well, I can hardly believe it is 10 years, next issue (Oct/Nov) since I started to publish Sibrydion.

I am hoping to publish a calendar for 2020, (it is too late now for 2019, as in this low population, tourist area – I feel we need to have the entire season to sell a calendar for the following year) to take full advantage of the presence of visitors to the area and maximise sales and funds raised.

The vision is to refl ect the local area, so I am looking for photos from readers, of subjects throughout our distribution area, which is right round the coast from Porthmadog down to the Dyfi Valley to Machynlleth, and also along the Mawddach Valley and across to Bala, from Dolgellau. Profi ts from sales of the calendar will be shared with Aberdyfi Search & Rescue, the RNLI, and Air Ambulance Wales, all crucial services to us in this area, so please support this competition.

Non-professional photographers are invited to submit entries of photos, and you must ensure you have a high-resolution (minimum 300dpi) fi le for it. Keep this safe, and if your photo is selected for printing, you will be asked for the hi-res version. There will be a small entry fee of £3 per photo, which will be used to provide cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd awarded images.

You can send your entries an A5 print, to me by post to: Bod Idris, Llwyngwril, LL37 2JB, giving your name, postal address, email address, and a phone contact number (landline and/or mobile). Give a title for your picture and state where you took the photograph. Your details will be stored securely, and will only be used in relation to this competition. Please include the entry fee with your photograph. Cheques payable to: Sibrydion Cymuned.

The best photo will have pride of place on the front of the calendar. I look forward to seeing your entries. Let’s raise some funds for these crucial local charities, which save many lives in the area, visitors and locals alike.

So look back at your photos or get snapping. The only criteria are that it has to be taken within this area in South Snowdonia/Meirionnydd, where Sibrydion is distributed. It must be your own work and you must be the holder of any copyright for your pictures. If you are under 18, please ask your parent/guardian to issue consent for you to enter the competition – a note with your entry with signature and name printed and parent or guardian stated. We welcome entries from under 18s wholeheartedly!

“I have been really impressed with what the facility has achieved in such a short space of time”.

Gwynedd Council representatives were recently invited to take a tour of one of the county’s newest businesses that is already winning prizes on the international stage.

Aber Falls Whisky Distillery, at Abergwyngregyn, (which is just along the coast from Bangor, toward Llandudno), began production last year, but since whisky must be aged for at least three years and one day before it can legally be sold, this product will not be available until 2020.

In the meantime, the distillery is also manufacturing a range of gins and liquors, which are already gaining critical acclaim, winning a total of 5 medals at this year’s San Francisco Spirits Competition. They have also been nominated for a Great British Food Award, under the Best New British Product category.

The site itself has had a rich history, from housing a 19th century slate Works, to a margarine factory during the world wars. Along with the restoration of the distillery itself, it is hoped that a purpose-built visitors Centre will replace the remaining derelict buildings, offering a range of facilities including a distilling laboratory, museum, exhibition space, conferencing facilities and a bistro.

Managing Director James Wright said: “I am delighted with the progress the distillery has made over the past months, and am excited to continue to develop the business to offer both a high quality visitor attraction, and an internationally acclaimed range of spirits to promote the beauty and heritage of North Wales across the world”

Councillor Ioan Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development added: “I have been really impressed with what the facility has achieved in such a short space of time. What I find particularly encouraging is the company’s passion for contributing to the local community – from the fact that the spent grain is fed to cattle on the neighbouring farm, to the employment and development of local people and even discussions with Bangor University regarding Research opportunities”

SUMMER’S HERE - The sun is out and so is the Llwyngwril Yarn Bombing!

It’s that time of year again and the village is decked in yarn, ready for you to come and visit.Noah’s Ark has berthed on the Green and an amazing variety of animals are winding their way through the village and across Afon Gwril to be safely aboard before the fl ood (although with this weather, they might have a bit of a wait!).

Elsewhere the faeries have been busy again, braving the heat to try and bake their way to glory in The Great Fairy Bake Off . Keep your eyes open for a selection of confectionery treats and try and spot the Judges.

Further round the village, the Yarn Bombing gets a bit fi shy. If you can fi nd the Wanted Poster for a naughty fi sh, you’ll know how to spot Woolly who hides around the village waiting for eagle eyes to spot him. Post a picture of him on our Facebook page and we’ll send the Octopus Sheriff to track him down.

There are pirates and treasure chests and jellyfi sh and lobsters to hunt out too. Visit the Riverside Store and buy a map so that you don’t miss out on any of the ‘Yarny Trail’.

And make sure you fi nd the puzzles specially made for the children.

So, don’t forget to pay us a visit this summer. The woolly creations will remain in situ until the end of October – Keep an eye on our Facebook page for details.

We would also like to thank our sponsors who have already supported us this year.

We are however always in need of funds to keep our creations secure! So, if you would like to make a contribution from your business to be included as a sponsor please contact us via the Facebook page. You can also fi nd us on Instagram: llwyngwril_yarnbombing

As in previous years all proceeds are in aid of Y Ganolfan, Llwyngwril our Community Centre which is a registered charity no. 506847

My 50th Birthday Charity Trek for Alzheimer's Society by Kate Coldham

When my husband recently asked me what I would like for my 50th Birthday, my immediate reacon (apart from surprise that he was being so organised - aer all, my 50th was sll over a year away!) was that I wanted to go to the Great Wall of China.

But this request wasn’t just some random holiday desnaon - although I must admit, The Great Wall has always been on my ‘bucket list’ of places to visit. It is an idea that has been brewing in the back of my mind for many years ever since I saw an appeal by the Alzheimer’s Society, asking for people to take on an epic expedion.

Each year, the Society appeal for 20-30 intrepid volunteers to take part in a 6 day, 50 mile trek along the wall, camping in local farmer’s huts and mountain hotels, and tackling some of the more remote, inhospitable secons of this amazing ‘Wonder of the World’ including tough climbs such as the famous ‘Heaven’s Ladder’ (200 steps up a cliff face!). Did you know that the Dyfi valley area is recognised by the United Nations as a site of excellence and innovation in sustainable development?

‘Biosffer Dyfi Biosphere’ has had this accolade since 2009, and is the only such area in Wales. Since then businesses, academics and many others have started to work together to take advantage of the opportunities arising from this status. Now the locally led Partnership, responsible for the initiative, is asking whether the area should be expanded.

The UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere inspires people and organisations to work together in creating sustainable futures we can all be proud of. It connects people with nature and cultural heritage while strengthening the local economy. The status is voluntary. Any funding needed for activities is contributed by partners or is brought into the area as grants. For example, at the moment a ‘Development Project’ is supported by the Rural Development Programme Local Action Groups for Ceredigion, Powys and Gwynedd.

This project is paying Jane Powell to help schools explore how they can use the Dyfi Biosphere in their teaching, including through out of school activities provided by members of the Dyfi Biosphere Education Group. In addition, it’s paying ecodyfi to help cafes and restaurants work out how to increase and promote their use of fresh, seasonal and local produce. This new business network will build on the successful Showcase event held recently at the Wynnstay in Machynlleth. The project has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

One benefit of the UNESCO status is that Visit Wales recognises the area as a ‘destination’ worthy of development support. They have grant-aided several collaborative activities, including the production of the Dyfi Biosphere Legends videos and the Activities series, both available on YouTube. However, the largest project so far has been the EU-funded Citizen’s Observatory Web (COBWEB),

which explored how people can contribute to land and sea management by recording observations on mobiles and tablets. This project supported jobs in Aberystwyth University, Environment Systems and ecodyfi . Amongst many other activities, students staying at Outward Bound Aberdyfi mapped wildlife at RSPB Ynys-hir and along the river.

A successful Annual Meeting was held recently by the Biosphere in Ceredigion Museum, where Greener Tywyn presented a fi lm about their activities and Tywyn Beach Guardians. One of the topics discussed was how to reduce single use plastics, and covered the climate change pros and cons of alternatives available to shops and cafes, as well as reducing beach litter. Can we build on Tywyn’s success and work towards a Plastic Free Biosphere?

Discussions are underway with Town and Community Councils, including the three in the Dysynni valley, about the possibility of extending the internationally recognised area.

Residents and businesses in Tywyn, Abergynolwyn and elsewhere are asked to visit www.dyfi biosphere.wales or www.biosff erdyfi .cymru and to join the conversation @biosff erdyfi biosphere on facebook or twitter.

People need to be on their guard against financial and legal scams following a rise in cases reported to the Citizens Advice consumer service. Citizens Advice Gwynedd is now showing people how to spot scams as it launches Scams Awareness Month.

A total of 1200 financial and legal scams were reported to the consumer service in the year ending April 2018 - a 6% increase on the year before. The median loss for these scams was £330. A range of investments scams were reported to the consumer service, including:

Cryptocurrency – Fake websites claim to offer cryptocurrency investments, like Bitcoin. Often, scammers will pretend that household names have endorsed the company to give it some legitimacy.

Binary options – Scammers pose as stockbrokers and get you to place bets on whether phoney shares will rise or fall within a certain date. They’ll promise big returns. You should check if they are on the FCA Register and not on the warning list of firms to avoid

Holiday timeshares – Scammers promise to buy your membership off you for an advanced fee.

Bogus solicitors – A scammer will intercept emails from a legitimate solicitor and pose as them. Scammers often strike when a property is being exchanged on and get the funds diverted to their bank account instead. Check if they are on the Solicitors Regulation Authority to see if they are genuine.

Tal Michael Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Gwynedd said: “Scammers can make for convincing white collar professionals, especially online, and are skilled at persuading people they are legitimate. The stakes are high with financial and legal scams as you can end up losing your savings or pension fund, which can put your long-term financial stability at risk.

“When you get approached about any investment, don’t rush into anything without making sure it’s legitimate first, particularly when you’re contacted out of the blue.”

To help stop more people being fleeced by these types of scams, Citizens Advice Gwynedd is sharing tips on how to spot them:

Be suspicious if you’re contacted out of the blue, even if it’s from a name you recognise

Don’t be rushed – you never need to make a decision straight away

If it sounds too good to be true it probably is

Never send money to someone you have never met

Never give out your bank details unless you are certain you can trust the person contacting you

Walk away from job ads that ask for money in advance

Genuine computer firms do not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer

Suspect a scam? Hang up, wait five minutes to clear the line or use another phone to call

Persuasive sales patter? Just say: “No Thank You”

Don’t suffer in silence – speak out about scams

The fi rst half of the year was one of mixed activity and work on the revival of the Corris Railway with the biggest physical progress being made, with repairs to the roof and fabric of the former stable block at Corris station which now houses the museum, shop and ticket off ice. This was done by contractors but the volunteer workforce has carried on with various projects including the construction of new carriages at Maespoeth Junction as well as maintaining the track, controlling vegetation and also running the trains.

Various special trains have operated including the annual trip as part of the Machynlleth Comedy Festival, where there is a gig in the carriage shed at Maespoeth Junction, and Race the Train. There have also been specials in conjunction with Corris Mine Explorers and members of the Branch Line Society enjoyed a Corris Railway Experience Day, an idea which may be developed into the future.

Trains will run on Saturdays and Sundays in July, Saturdays to Tuesdays in August and Sundays in September. Special events in August are planned.

Away from the Railway itself work on building the next steam engine for future use in the line continues at the works of Alan Keef Ltd in Herefordshire as fund raising permits. In June the newly cast cylinders for the locomotive were delivered the Keef’s to be fi tted.

Reviving the oldest narrow gauge railway in Mid Wales is carried out by volunteers and more hands are always welcome. If you are interested in joining the ranks please call 01654 702954.

In April of last year I received a phone call from Cambrian vets asking if I could look aft er a brood of Blue Tit nestlings left alone in their nest box aft er their parents were killed. There were seven live chicks, the rest having perished, and they were transported into my care. This was a daunting task, raising such tiny, fragile creatures and the vets and I were resigned to the fact that not all of them might survive. The chicks varied in size and strength and one, possibly the runt, was puny and scruff y. I watched over them anxiously, making sure that each was warm and fed, late into the night. But next morning, I sadly discovered that one chick had died, not Scruff y, but surprisingly a larger one.

The six remaining chicks fared well and grew very quickly. They lost the comical grey fl uff that plumed between their sprouting feathers and they opened their eyes. Their legs and feet became sturdy enough to climb onto the rim of their knitted nest and so I moved them into a cage where they could move about and perch. Still being hand fed, they thrived and, to my immense joy and pride, all six survived to become delightful juveniles. Scruff y, although still the smallest, had become as beautiful as his siblings.

Tit chicks can become exceptionally tame when hand reared, which makes for ease of feeding and general care, but not advisable for when they have to survive out in the world. So the next step was for the youngsters to go into a large cage in the bird shed where they could have less contact with humans. They learned to fl y and to feed themselves, six bright and funny little birds.

All too soon they showed the restlessness of fl edgling desire for freedom and I knew that they would have to leave the safety of their foster home. They were still very attached to me but I knew that they would gradually, once outside, lose that imprinting and become wild.

The day of release came and the six little bluetits burst through the opened cage door and fl ew around our back garden, twittering excitedly. They took off into the trees, calling to each other as I anxiously watched them bobbing amongst the foliage. Aft er a time of joyful exploration they returned to perch nearby in a rose bush, their sweet voices twittering, but there were only fi ve. Number six never returned home and I don't know what became of him. However, the fi ve young Blue Tits stayed around for several weeks, living in the tall trees and coming down to the rose bush for me to feed them. Oft en they would enthusiastically greet me as I returned home, noisily fl ying down the drive towards me, like fi ve blue fairies, bobbing up and down in the air. Gradually, as I predicted, they peeled away, one by one, drawn to be absorbed into the wild, where they belong.

Hwyl Nadolig/ Dolgellau pre-Christmas Fun!On 7th December 2018 Dolgellau will be welcoming all to share in some pre-Christmas fun! The shops will be open in the evening. The square and other parts of the town will be hosting all kinds of family events and activities for all to enjoy. We will write detail about this nearer the time...

In the meantime, we would like to make an appeal to all you knitters and crocheters out there. We are asking for people to contribute 6” squares of knitting, crochet or cut felt from old woollen jumpers to make the longest scarf ever! These squares will subsequently be used to make blankets for the homeless and needy.

We are basing this project on an idea from the legend of Idris Gawr, whom is said to have studied the stars while sitting on top of the mountain (Cader Idris). Perhaps he would appreciate a scarf to keep him warm on cold winter nights. Will you please help us?

The 6” squares can be worked using any thickness of wool. Cut squares from felted sweaters will also be gratefully received. Please drop your finished squares off in Dolgellau at: Knit one, in Eldon Square, Dipsy Dragon ( also Eldon Square), Gwyndy (Bridge Street) or any of the cafes in town, which have a basket with knitting equipment set out for the use of customers who would like to add a few rows to help this worthy project along.

At Sesiwn Fawr there will be a Sgarff Idris Gawr stall for you to visit and gather more information about the project. We will also be displaying the scarf and the stories of its progress in Dolgellau town centre as it grows through the season. Already, we have offers of help from lovely people who live away from the area and indeed overseas, who have been inspired by this idea. In the next issue we will be able to go into more detail. We would love to hear the stories that lie behind them and how you have been inspired by this idea, which will lead to keeping those in need cosy and warm.

We BakeYou Take

Home cooked family & individual meals, puddings & sweet treats delivered to your door.

Please call Suzanne on 07731741295

or Karen on 07712228716

After 10am Monday – Friday, for orders, requests or enquiries.

We are Suzanne and Karen and we have started our own business making delicious home cooked meals, savouries and sweet treats in one of our homes.

We are two local ladies from Tywyn and we had been both working in care for many years and last year we decided to start up our own business. We were cooking for ourselves and posting them on facebook and we had many comments asking if we were selling them, which gave us the idea.

The business started in December last year with one of our homes being turned into a hectic busy kitchen through the day, after being inspected, and passing the food hygiene inspection and were awarded a 5 star rating. Our service provides home cooked, wholesome, individual meals with potatoes and seasonal vegetables, all freshly cooked from ingredients sourced locally. These are ideal for those who live on their own, or who may struggle individually or just don’t have the time to prepare a wholesome meal. Family meals, sweet and savoury treats are also available as well as a delivery service around the local area for those who can’t get to us.

We have recently started attending carnivals and fairs, selling our home baked delights such as Scotch eggs, sausage rolls, quiches, sausage, bacon plaits and cakes and sweet treats such as maids of honour, cornflake tarts, millionaires shortbread and various flavoured cup cakes and many more.

Please call either of us or visit our facebook page to order or for more information and to see what’s on offer. We look forward to baking for you.

The Aberdyfi Food Festival is back by popular demand for its fourth year and will be held on the playing field next to Neuadd Dyfi on Saturday 18th August.

The Festival will feature cookery demonstrations by leading local chefs as well as the opportunity to sample and purchase a wide range of Welsh produce including sea food, award winning cheeses, locally reared meat, Swshi, smoked foods, preserves & jams, Welsh wine, beer & cider, organic vegetables & herbs.

The Festival is free of charge and will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

Our local Michelin-starred chef Gareth Ward from Ynyshir Hall is our special guest and he will get the cookery demonstrations underway at 11.00 am in the theatre kitchen, where he will showcase his culinary skills. Ynyshir has recently been voted 28th out of 100 top UK restaurants, ahead of The Fat Duck & Le Gavroche. Other local chefs and suppliers will also be putting on demonstrations throughout the day, including a wine tasting and a cocktail class.

Event organiser Neil Storkey said: “The food festival has been incredibly popular over the past few years and is now firmly established as one of the highlights of Aberdyfi’s summer season.

“This is an event for everyone, whatever their age and culinary preferences. Visitors can watch demonstrations, browse the stalls, sample the food and buy fresh produce they may not have come across before.”

The Aberdyfi Food Festival is sponsored by the Aberdyfi Community Council. Further information is available via the Festival’s facebook page: ‘Gwyl Fwyd Aberdyfi Food Festival’.

The annual Fairbourne Railway ‘Race the Train’ event 2018 will take place on Saturday 25th August at 6:30pm. It will repeat the successful format from 2017 outside the railway with a street closure. We are planning a fun family evening with hot food, bar, cold drinks, music and games, not to forget the actual race itself.

We want to involve the whole community, so we will be working with the Village Festival Committee. As in previous year’s, we are asking local businesses to sponsor the event, for more information please telephone the Railway 01341 250 362

Last year we had a total of 135 entrants in the 4 race sections – Adult Men, Adult Women, Junior Boys and Junior Girls. It will be the same this year, with the addition of an adult short course for adult who want to run with their children. The adult race is over a distance of 4.6Km starting at the entrance to The Fairbourne Railway, then along Beach Road turning right onto Penrhyn Drive North, continuing to the end. The railway tunnel is the halfway point, where the adults then return to the start. The junior and adult short course is 1.8km and follows the same route to the Golf House where they turn back to the starting point.

The cost per entrant Adult or Junior is £7.50 with each entrant receiving a 2018 Race The Train tee shirt and certifi cate for those completing the Race. There will also be medals for the fi rst three places of both the Adult and junior Races. Limited stocks of the 2018 tee shirts will be available, dependent on pre-booked entrant numbers.

We are asking entrants to pre-register before 31st July, by completing and returning the form to The Railway. Registration forms are available online at www.fairbournerailway.com/steam-railway-events.htm or pick one up from the Railway.

Alternatively, you can register online: www.fairbournerailwayshop.co.uk/race-the-train-2018 Registration will also take place on the day, but depending on how popular the event is, we are unable to guarantee an exclusive 2018 tee shirt.

Good luck to all entrants.

We are part-time volunteers, trained, by the ambulance service, in basic life support, oxygen therapy and the use of the defibrillator, in order to attend emergency calls and provide potentially life-saving treatment until the ambulance arrives. When on duty, we are called out by the ambulance service.

Every second counts when trying to save someone’s life and the chance of survival from a cardiac arrest rises from 5-10% to as high as 60% with early resuscitation. So, when the ambulance arrives there is a greater chance of entering it alive than dead.

We need more volunteers to give a little spare time to help us to provide more cover and help us to help each other in our community.

We currently have 4 responders in Fairbourne and 2 in Llwyngwril, with a further 2 about to be trained for Llwyngwril.

For more info contact: Alan Wilde 01341 250012

There are now 2 public access defibrillators in Fairbourne : one at the corner shop and one at the RAF Air Cadet Centre

As in Llwyngwril there are two: one at Y Ganolfan and one at Borthwen Caravan Park.

With the assistance of Welsh Hearts, we will shortly be conducting further training demos in CPR and use of the defibrillator, both in Fairbourne and Llwyngwril. Details of these training sessions will be advertised shortly.

The practice of Yoga originated tens of thousands of years ago in India. Today there are many variants, all based on boosting health & wellbeing. Over time, these have evolved, with most still sharing a large amount. Here I’ll outline some of the specifi c features strongly underpinning Dru.

Most fundamental is Flow – smooth, continuous and fl owing movements are integral with the Breath. This develops deeper awareness, enhancing all aspects of practice, which can then impact on daily life. Focus on the breath underpins all movement; in addition, there is a range of postures and sequences designed specifi cally using the breath to energise, heal or calm the body. Special attention is paid to the health of the Spine. Movements to develop strength & fl exibility feature throughout Dru – a healthy spine impacts positively on almost every aspect of life. The ability to use the Core correctly leads to safe and eff icient movement and is fundamental to Dru teaching. In addition, every class begins with ‘Activation’ to warm and prepare the body for exercise, and fi nishes with a Deep Relaxation.

I teach Dru fl exibly so students who are new or have restrictions in body movement are able work safely, within their own comfort levels, at the same time enabling more experienced students to take a sequence or posture further. The most obvious benefi t from Dru, as with all Yoga, is the development & maintenance of a fi t and healthy body. Dru’s extra focus on breathing has a calming eff ect on the mind and deeper into

other body systems – this in time should permeate into daily life. All students can enjoy benefi ts, as they are directed to work within their own safe, comfortable level. To take part is far more important than being able to be a prima donna. If you seek the potential of generally feeling fi tter, becoming more fl exible/mobile, having a calmer and yet more alert state of mind, Dru should be a good choice. Age need not be a limiting factor – in fact, I started Dru teacher training at 60+.

Dru translates from Sanscrit as Still Point (e.g the centre of a storm or moving wheel). From practising Dru for over 20+ years, I have found this the most amazing gain.

For a long time, it has been said that a dog is Man’s best friend, but apart from being a bit of company are there really any health benefits to owning a dog?

Well, research shows that yes, there are actually more than you would think! Dogs do not just fill a space in your hearts with unconditional love and affection; they actually make your heart stronger. Studies in Sweden found that having a dog as a companion was linked to reduced cholesterol, lowered blood pressure and reduced levels of Triglycerides, which all impact on cardiovascular health. Whilst looking at this study, they also found that recovery rates in patients that had suffered from a heart attack were better and faster in those who owned a dog versus patients that didn’t.

Dogs also help to keep their human counterparts fit and active, while health experts advise that we should take 21/2 hours of moderate exercise per week, most dog owners will easily exceed this by walking their dog for at least half an hour a couple of times a day, not only do they benefit from the exercise this brings, but also the fresh air and exposure to natural daylight. It was shown that dog owners were much less likely to suffer from SAD (seasonal affected disorder) syndrome than their non-dog owning counterparts. Walking is also a great way to loose weight naturally without over-doing it, causing pulled muscles or splashing out on expensive gym memberships. When looking at people over the age of 70, it was found that people who walked daily or owned a dog managed to stay more mobile later on in their years.

Dogs are also a great way of improving your social circle of friends. Whether you are part of a training club, or participate in a dog-related sport, join a walking group or just chat to other dog owners on your daily walks. I have personally made some life-long friends, all over the country, through owning dogs. Dogs act as great companions, as they can reduce feelings of loneliness and assist in times of personal trauma or bereavement.

Dogs are amazing at reducing stress levels. This is one of the reasons they are used widely as part of therapy dog by many organisations like PAT, (Pets as Therapy) spending just 5 minutes with a dog

can lower anxiety and blood pressure and increase chemicals in the brain, like dopamine and serotonin. These enable us to feel more calm and relaxed. Therapy dogs are used in hospital, care homes and hospices to stave off depression in patients, who may be suffering from long-term illnesses and immobility.

Canine companions have been used for many years now, to improve the quality of life and independence for both visually impaired and deaf people, by way of assistance dogs. They are also a great aid to people with mobility difficulties and are used to help with daily tasks around the house. However, we are now seeing a huge increase in the use of dogs to assist as companions for people with conditions such as autism and as detection dogs for sufferers of seizures. Dogs can detect the chemical imbalances in the body, prior to a seizure, they can be a great help to raise the alarm or give people time to get to a safe place. Thus giving them a greater level of independence. Dogs also provide help for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. It has been proven that the presence of a dog for companionship greatly reduces the frequency and duration of episodes of emotional “flare up’s”.

Lastly, on a medical point, a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Immunology, in 2004, concluded that children who grew up in a household with a family dog or cat, were more likely to have a stronger immune system and less likely to suffer from childhood allergies relating to pets.

My final observations are that dogs provide hours of great entertainment and lots of laughter! They are there by your side, which is why they not only make great pets but they also make the very best of friends.

Man’s Best FriendBy Sally Friswell (Dysynni Dogs)

“Our dogs provide us with a sense of purpose, a reason to get up and moving on a daily basis, which is why they not only help with depression but also with a general motivation for life.”.

CHIMNEY SWEEPINGHaving your flue/chimney swept removes any deposits which may have built up. It ensures there is a clear and safe passage for combustible gases caused by the burning process – greatly reducing the risk of the chimney catching fire.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF A CHIMNEY FIRE✔ Have your chimney swept on a regular basis.✔ Make sure the wood you burn is well seasoned, or buy from

a reputable supplier. Moisture content should be below 17%.✔ Choose the correct size appliance – if too large, wood is

not burnt efficiently and unburned fuel and smoke will condense in the chimney as extremely flammable creosote.

✔ If you have a wood burner, always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on fuel loading and air flow.

Sciurus carolinensis - better known to most of us as the Grey Squirrel, must surely be one Britain’s most recognisable creatures.

Just about everyone has come across a grey squirrel at one time or another and they are pretty much widespread across the whole of the country. Given that they are also diurnal (active during the day) and can be very bold and confi dent around people, it is no wonder that they are so well known if not always well liked. Yet, only just over one hundred years ago they were completely unknown in this country. The only squirrels you were likely to see were our native red squirrels.

As I said, a lot of people don’t think much of them - some of the rather unkind epithets used to describe them include ‘vermin’, ‘rats with bushy tails’ and ‘alien invaders’. Well, ‘vermin’ is a word we humans use to describe any creature that lives where we don’t want it to live, annoys us, is very successful and especially, if it gets the better of us. ‘Rats with bushy tails’ has an element of truth in it

I suppose, as both rats and squirrels are rodents, but that’s about the only similarity that I can see.

As for ‘alien invaders’ - well they are alien in so much as they originated in another country, but they are certainly not invaders as it wasn’t their choice to come over to Britain. It’s not as if they sat over in their homeland of North America and hatched out a plan to cross the Atlantic Ocean and take over the country - I should imagine they were quite happy where they were. It was, of course, man in his infi nite wisdom who decided to introduce them to Britain, to brighten up the place a bit. (I’m not sure whether that’s irony or sarcasm - but you get the point). Between 1876 and 1929, grey squirrels were brought over and released here, until someone thought ‘Hang on, perhaps this isn’t such a good idea’, by which time it was too late as the squirrels had established themselves comfortably and obviously decided that as they were here, they might as well make the most of it - which they proceeded to do and very successfully too.

The key to their success is their adaptability - they can live in parks, gardens and woodland and will eat a wide range of food, including unfortunately, bird’s eggs and nestlings if they come across them. Being gnawing animals their mainstays are nuts and seeds and also the under layer of tree bark. This is when they can come into confl ict with humans - we all know how determined and resourceful they can be in accessing, breaking into and emptying bird nut feeders and they will also strip bark from trees to get at the sweet under layer, damaging branches and sometimes killing entire trees if they ‘ring bark’ a trunk - that is remove a complete circle of bark’. Incidentally, if you are despairing as you watch a squirrel destroying yet another expensive ‘ squirrel proof’ feeder why not try this tip, which is actually recommended by the RSPB. If you sprinkle all your peanuts, fat balls and seed mixes with hot chilli powder, squirrels will give them a wide berth but the birds are immune to the taste and it apparently has no eff ect on them and does them no harm. It’s better than buying fancy so called squirrel proof feeders, which these agile animals will probably eventually break into anyway.

Leaving aside any prejudices we might have regarding grey squirrels, you just can’t help but admire their amazing acrobatic skills. They are superbly adapted for an arboreal life although they are just as nimble and elusive on the ground. Their back legs have ‘double jointed’ ankles which means they can turn their feet backwards and their front feet act almost like hands with sharp gripping claws, enabling them to scamper up a smooth tree trunk or descend head fi rst, defying gravity, with equal ease. They have forward facing eyes which help them perform seemingly suicidal leaps of over two metres from one swaying branch to another eff ortlessly and their long bushy tails twitch from side to side acting as a balancer - serving the same purpose as those long poles that tight rope walkers use. Although when it comes to tightrope walking the grey squirrel reigns supreme. Outside our house is a telegraph pole with a heavy-duty electricity cable stretching right the way down to the lane below at a very steep angle. I watched as a squirrel came running along the wire, uphill, occasionally stopping to admire the view or have a quick look behind it. When it reached the pole, it sat there for a while and then decided to return down the wire in the opposite direction as if just for the fun of it. It gave me vertigo just to watch!

Mind you, the one time that their natural agility sometimes fails them is on the road and although they are fast runners and can dodge and weave around obstacles, it’s not much defence against fast moving traff ic as the many road kills you see show. They seem to become disorientated by traff ic. I remember one occasion when a squirrel however, got lucky. I was following a large tanker lorry when a squirrel ran straight into its path and disappeared underneath it as it thundered along - amazingly it somehow emerged unscathed turned

in a panic-stricken circle and ran straight under my car! I was sure that it was a goner but as I glanced in my rear view mirror I saw it reach the road edge and head for the safety of the nearest tree. I really hope that squirrel had a long and happy life. It deserved it aft er its death defying antics.

Another accusation oft en levelled at grey squirrels is that they are responsible for the decline in our native red squirrel population. This isn’t entirely fair as given certain conditions, greys and reds can co-exist relatively comfortably. One major problem though is that the greys are carriers of the virulent squirrel pox disease to which they themselves are immune but which if transmitted to the reds is fatal with practically a 100% death rate.

Grey squirrels, as a species, are nothing if not resilient. The last ones to be deliberately released in Britain were in 1929 and within twenty odd years they were considered a major pest. The Government put a price on their heads and off ered a bounty of half a crown (in pre-decimal money) per fi ve squirrels killed - the tails having to be produced as proof. Sixpence a tail! I seem to remember statements being bandied about in the fi ft ies when I was a boy (showing my age now!) to the eff ect that the grey squirrel population would be eliminated within fi ve years. Well here we are some sixty odd years later with a thriving nationwide population. So they got that a bit wrong to say the least!

Whilst appreciating that they can be a problem, in some respects and that it was, of course, a mistake to introduce them in the fi rst place, they are here now and here to stay by the look of it, so its probably best to accept them and enjoy watching their antics and acrobatics.

Since Gwynedd Council decided, in its ‘wisdom’, to break up and remove (albeit not very far!) the access ramp onto the beach in Fairbourne, I have been doggedly trying to fi nd funding for a replacement structure. Joyce Currie has also been doing her best to highlight the issue and has even hit the national newspapers with her story. Two petitions have raised over a thousand signatures in support of having safe access to the beach, but so far .... nothing, nada, zilch.

I have pleaded with the Maritime Department repeatedly on behalf of the people of Fairbourne and visitors, but the response is always the same ‘there is no money available’. The same goes for the Tourism and Regeneration department, the Welsh Assembly Tourism off ice, Play Wales and various charitable organisations. I also raised the matter in the Fairbourne Project Board meeting, but was told that access to the beach wasn’t on the remit of the Board. The portfolio holder for Tourism in Gwynedd AND the Leader of the Council promised to ‘see what they can do’, but I’ve heard nothing back from them. So I contacted our AM who referred the matter back to Gwynedd Council .... it’s like banging your head against a brick wall.

No doubt this little article will trigger a fl urry of defensive communications, off ering all kinds of excuses etc.

So folks, if we want an access structure onto Fairbourne beach it looks as though we’re going to have to do it ourselves, source the funding (Big Lottery, or Crowd Funding maybe), get someone to design it, do the necessary planning application and fi nd a company who can construct it for us. But it won’t be this year I’m afraid and I apologise for letting the village of Fairbourne down.

If anyone can off er advice, their expertise or anything else that could help, please contact me on either or the numbers below.

Is Gwynedd under threat? When we recently drove up to Portmadog, I was surprised to see how many notices there were along the roadside relating to the treatment of Fallopia Japonica, or ‘Japanese Knotweed’ to you and me. I am wondering just how big a problem this highly invasive weed really is in Gwynedd and what action is being taken to combat the threat it poses ?

This perennial weed dies back in the winter but in early summer the bamboo-like stems emerge from rhizomes deep underground to shoot to over 7’ (2.1m) in height. It will suppress all other plant growth and it can grow at the rate of 4” EVERY DAY! The canes have characteristic purple fl ecks and they produce branches from nodes along its length. The leaves are heart shaped and are up to 5.5’’(14cms) in length and are borne alternatively along the stem. Creamy-white fl owers tassels are produced in late summer and early autumn which reach up to 6” (15cms). The roots can reach to 7 feet below ground and every scrap left can become a new invasive plant. It can grow under and through tarmac and even through tiny cracks in concrete.

It is common for dispersal to take place via watercourses. Machines transporting even small fragments of this invasive plant may be suff icient to contaminate new sites. There is plenty of information to be found on the Internet. It needs to be treated over a period of years, as it will always come back aft er just one treatment. Along with a few other “invasive plants”, Japanese Knotweed has few, or even no native herbivores that feed on them. They can out-compete native fl ora, yet provides little or no food for native fauna. However trials are now taking place in some areas to establish how successful the introduction of an insect (Aphalara Itadori), which feeds on the sap of the super weed is going to be.

Once you have it in your garden then anyone wishing to purchase your house couldn’t get a mortgage unless they can produce a “Management Plan” supplied by a professional eradication company backed by a transferable guarantee. When you are selling a house now you are required to complete a detailed questionnaire, which includes a question asking specifi cally if you have any Japanese Knotweed in the garden. If a vendor

is not entirely honest then a new resident can be left with a bill, which can run into several thousands of pounds. (Maybe there is potential for legal proceedings against the dishonest previous owner?)

In the present climate, with the pressure on budgets, I do not feel that residents can sit back and say that it is Gwynedd Council’s responsibility. I would suggest that communities need to take some responsibility themselves, identify where there are serious outbreaks and formulate a plan of action to tackle this “growing” problem (sorry about that!). I understand that there are grants available (Tir Gofal and ESA schemes are mentioned on the internet) and Gwynedd Council Footpath Off icer, Elizabeth Haines (01766) 771000 and Snowdonia National Park are prepared to give further information as to how to apply for them.

The proposed work to deal with these plants is outlined in the Invasive Plants Action Plan with the Local Biodiversity Action Plan (Natur Gwynedd). If you are aware of the presence of some of these invasive plants, particularly invasive aquatic plants, then please let “Cofnod” (North Wales Environmental Information Service) know by completing their online invasive plant recording form. If you are unsure with the identifi cation of a plant then please email a digital photograph of the plant to the Biodiversity Team.

Further information can be found on the Snowdonia National Park “invasive species” web page.

I am certainly no expert on this subject but I do feel that it is an issue, which needs to be addressed and the sooner the better.

“I have a long-term health condition, but I recently had my Personal Independence Payment (PIP) reduced after a re-assessment. I want to challenge the decision.”

Where do I start? There are two stages to challenging your PIP assessment decision. The first stage is known as mandatory reconsideration and involves asking the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to take a second look at your assessment decision.

Normally, you’ll need to contact the DWP within a month of your assessment decision being made, and it’s best to do so in writing. Under some circumstances, you can ask for mandatory reconsideration up to 13 months from your assessment decision date.

Your letter should list all the reasons why you don’t think your PIP award should be reduced. Make sure you provide evidence to back up each point you make, such as practical examples, medical records and supporting letters from specialists who are treating you. If you don’t have the required evidence available, you can submit it separately at a later date.

Once the DWP has looked again at your assessment decision, you’ll receive a Mandatory Reconsideration Notice, which says if your request has been successful or not. If it is, your original award will be reinstated and your payment backdated.

If you’re unsuccessful, you could choose to progress to the second challenge stage. This is where you appeal your assessment decision by taking your case to tribunal. For help filling in the tribunal form and preparing for your hearing, contact Gwynedd Citizens Advice on 03444 77 20 20 or visit the website.

You can get free, confidential, independent and impartial advice from your local Citizens Advice. Citizens Advice Gwynedd can be contacted on 03444 77 20 20 Monday – Friday. 10am–3pm. There is also advice online at www.adviceguide.org.uk.

Gardening Diary Dyddiadur Garddio

Busy busyBy Lisa Cunningham-Allsop – Camlan Garden Centre, Dinas Mawddwy.

What extraordinarily dry weather we’ve been having: as I write this in July it hasn’t rained properly for several weeks! The long-term forecast looks like cooler temperatures and showers mid-July so hoping that has helped with the garden by the time you read this.

AUGUST:There is plenty to do in the garden this month, and you should be enjoying a harvest of fruit and vegetables and start collecting seeds from plants that have fi nished fl owering, once the seed heads have dried. It is time to prune wisteria, as well as fruit plants grown along frames and fences, and give the hedges a last summer clip.

If you like to take cuttings for propagating now is the perfect time, use a rooting powder and sandy compost to increase chances of success. There are plenty of seeds to sow in August, including Onion, Fennel, Parsley, Spinach, Lettuce, Thyme, Borage, Cabbage, Pak Choi, sprouting turnip top and corn salad. Flower seeds such as Forget-Me-Not, Pansies, Violas and Antirrhinum can also be sown.

Pots, baskets and widow boxes are likely to need daily watering and a weekly feed: if there is rain, don’t assume they are getting enough water, check the soil to ensure it is moist. Deadhead regularly, to encourage repeat fl owering right through the summer.

SEPTEMBER:This is a busy month in the garden, harvesting the last of the summer vegetables and cleaning cold frames and the greenhouse or poly-tunnel ready for use in the autumn. Collect the seeds from fl ower heads that have dried, and store them in

paper envelopes in a dark dry place. Start to sow seeds for an early spring crop, such as onions, broccoli and some salads as well as perennial and hardy annual fl owers:

“September is the ideal time to sow hardy annuals for fl owers in spring and summer the following year. The seeds can also be sown in spring but sowing in autumn oft en results in earlier fl owers and more robust plants.” – Gardeners World

While the soil is still warm, plant herbaceous perennials so they have time to take root and establish before winter, making sure you water regularly if it is dry, and add a dressing of bone meal and mulch, such as Dalefoot Wool and Bracken compost, to give them a boost and help retain moisture. We have a great range of perennials in 9cm pots, which will reward you in Spring by growing into large healthy plants. Established perennials can be lift ed and divided now too.

Our garden centre shop has a wide range of equipment and resources, and we are happy to order items in if we don’t have them! The range

The Meirionnydd Artists Society (MAS) is the oldest active member’s art society in Wales. It was established in 1958, with a current membership of 60 artists – some professional, some amateur and some new learners. It is a welcoming, friendly and inclusive society. All that is needed for membership is a love of art and some creative urge.

The highlight of its year is the annual MAS Art Exhibition, where every member can exhibit his or her work. It will be held this year at Ty Siamas, Eldon Square, Dolgellau from the 18 – 30th of August from 10am to 5pm. Entry is free and there will be around 140 paintings on show, with some real bargains to be had. The competition theme for the show is “Sea and Shores” which is the Welsh Tourism theme for the year. The public are invited to vote for the people’s choice at the exhibition opening on Saturday the 18th of August at mid-day.

MAS are always looking for new members and support them by organising regular workshops, covering diff erent media and genres throughout the year. Come along, be inspired by the exhibition, buy original artwork and join the society.

There is quite a choice of bread in our shops these days, for us to use in sandwiches but I have to admit that the type of bread has never dictated my choice of sandwich. It is the filling that is all-important. Rev. Dick France, late of Llangelynnin and one of our best writers on Mark’s gospel, often observed Mark’s technique in what he called Markan Sandwiches.

Somehow or other, Mark would succeed in combining two very significant events in the Life of Jesus by describing one as the juicy filling of a sandwich and the other with the start (top) and end (bottom).

Jesus has crowds around him, when he is approached by Jairus, the Leader of the local synagogue. His daughter is dying and he pleads with this itinerant teacher/healer that he, Jesus, proceeds to his home to heal her. His position in society gives him the opportunity to take up pole position in the crowd. There must have been constant calls for Jesus’s attention from all sorts of needy people. Jairus gets in ahead of them and he knows how to behave in such circumstances. He goes down on his knees and pleads with Jesus. That’s one way to get attention. Show someone respect, butter him or her up a bit and there’s every chance you will get what you want. Being a person of authority, an establishment figure, a local celebrity, the people would have stepped aside for Jairus and, no doubt, Jesus’s friends would have been impressed that such a man had pleaded with their leader. They would have pressed Jesus to accompany Jairus. Those we associate with know us. Being seen with the Leader of the synagogue guaranteed street-cred.

The filling of the sandwich takes place in the most unlikely circumstances. Jesus moves off with the crowd and a woman who has been suffering haemorrhaging for 12 years wants to be near him. Mark tells us that she had tried all sorts of

treatment, for her debilitating illness, without success. Jesus’s first supplicant is named, Jairus, but this woman is not given a name. Neither is Jairus’s daughter named. No wonder many complain that the bible was written by men, for men. Although I have to say an over-emphasis on that point could lead to missing the true significance of these events.

To suffer, as this woman did, would have meant that she was a social outcast. She would have been regarded as unclean, untouchable. Even her own family would have had to “cleanse” themselves if they touched her. We begin to see why Mark put these stories together. You would want contact with the local celebrity, Jairus, but would be defiled by this woman’s touch. She manages to reach through the crowd and touch the very extremity of Jesus’s clothes. Jesus is aware of her touch and turns to the crowd. “Who touched me?” he asks. Those close to him find this ridiculous. There are so many “touching” him. The woman feels compelled to come forward. The crowd would have stepped back from her but Jesus has no concern about possible defilement. She is healed and Jesus addresses her as ‘daughter’, in emphasis of her being as much a part of God’s family as the privileged Jairus.

Meanwhile the sandwich is completed when Jesus arrives at Jairus’ house. His daughter of 12 (the same number of years the woman suffered haemorrhaging) has died but Jesus revives her and brings her back to life. “All’s well that ends well”, we may think, so long as we do not fail to reflect upon our attitudes to others: those we touch and those from whom we withdraw. For those who worry about the depth or flimsiness of their faith can take heart from the unnamed woman. Just the slightest touch of his clothes is enough for healing.

Bright turquoise sea so vivid and clear

By the waters edge we must be near

Seeking a breeze to be cooled from the sun

But still meeting on Friday for our chat and “fun”

We marvelled at the jellyfi sh fl oating out to sea

On the fast fl owing tide for us all to see.

Masses of sea holly growing in the dunes

Thriving in hot sand, far away from fumes.

We paddled along the length of the beach

Staying in the coolness we needed to seek

So many people near the town

Baking in chairs, turning reddish brown

We parked at Morfa Mawddach station, enjoying the fresh breeze on the bridge. Aft er the recent heat of 33 degrees we knew we needed to stay on the coast, far too hot to climb. We all enjoyed our exercise!

We meet in the school lay-by in Friog on the main road opposite the closed garage, at 9.30 every Friday.

As many are aware, volunteers distribute our community magazine. They deliver the magazine through letterboxes, ensuring that people don’t have to go out and look for it. Some, who cannot get out themselves, also welcome it as it keeps them in touch with what is going on locally. We are so grateful to our volunteers and try to take care of them and ensure they feel valued and not put upon! I know that some are advancing in years and not quite so sprightly as they once were.

I wonder if there are any younger people (of ANY AGE) who would be willing to commit a little time, (not a lot as it is only published 6 times a year) to help to ‘grow’ the area we can deliver to, by perhaps agreeing to deliver to the houses in your road, perhaps, if you don’t currently receive it this way. Or perhaps you do receive it, but can see that the volunteer may struggle a little, if lots of steps are involved, up and down, you may be willing to help with this. I know some volunteers are hoping for new volunteers to take their place, but soldier on, until there is someone.

If you could help, please let me know and you could either go on a reserve list in a village where there are deliveries already, or you could take on a few magazines to deliver in a village we don’t currently deliver to, or a part of the towns, we distribute around. (It would be a huge task to take on a whole town!) but we could deliver to certain roads if someone volunteers to take them.- just say what you can realistically commit to for the foreseeable future, every two months. 25 copies, 50, 100 or just 10. It all helps and keeps us all in touch with what’s going on.

We have no one to deliver in Llanegryn (apart from me) and rather than stop delivering there, when our volunteer had to give up, I have been doing it myself. I also always deliver to Penmaenpool to Arthog (not including Arthog).

Anyway, if you feel you can help, please email [email protected] or ring me 01341 250884 or contact me on facebook messenger. I will be delighted to hear from you.
