Dear EditorI would like to express my appreciation of theefforts that Philip and Lis Keddell have putinto bringing us a very personal insight ofthe goings on in North Norfolk.

Dear Lis and Philip,It was with some sadness & surprise that I learnedof your retiring from your involvement with theCrab Tales. It goes without saying that many ofthe readers - and writers - will feel the same way.

The Crab Taleshas become a local institutionover so many years and it is hoped that the newowners will keep up the standards you have setbut, more particularly, not lose the edge thathas set this publication apart from other blandlocal periodicals.

It is this occasional non-PC approach, alongwith Philips unique style of reporting, thathas created this breath of spring in the eld oflocal media.

Many times have I personally beneted from

your liberal acceptance of articles from my(and Mikkki Rokks) pen - I dont ever recall

Their style showed great enthusiasm for thearea and its people that struck a chord withlocals and visitors alike.

I hope that Lis hip operation gives her arenewed active life and that Philip will beable to spend more time in his love ofsailing on the Broads. See photo!

I look forward to the Crab Talescontinuingin their established tradition.

My best wishes for the future,

    Paul Damen

Dear Editor,Alan & Marilyn Bumfrey would like to thankeveryone who came to help them celebratetheir Golden Wedding Anniversary on Sunday13th September with their three daughters,Denise, Karen & Lisa as pictured.

They had a wonderful weekend of celebrationsincluding a family meal,a suprise day trip onthe Norfolk Broads (organised by the girls)

and the party where they were joined by over100 family and friends and raised 600 fortheir chosen charities, Woodelds Schooland Arthritis Research.

You may know Marilyn from the TouristInformation Centre in Cromer where shehas worked for many years and the couplehave lived in Cromer for over 40 years.

Their celebrations nished with a 2 weekholiday in Cyprus.

    Yours Sincerely

your editing anything out of my material, not least of all my eloquent choice ofquestionable bad language. All power to you.

(Aside)My Wife, Judy, and I have developed astrong and binding friendship with the Keddellsover the years - purely as a result of meetingthrough this paper.

I remember well the occasion when Philip wassummoned to attend an interview with the thenChief Executive of NNDC for alleged racism ina joke that had been submitted by a reader.I was invited along as a silent witness.

Oh dear, this poor guy tied himself in knotsand Mr K. and his not-so-silent witnesswere pissing themselves with laughter

before we even left his ofce.I know that things havent worked out quite asthey should have with the transition of the CrabTalesand I understand they, along with theever-supportive Liz King, have been put onthe spot, at the last minute.

Whatever may be said, believe me, the Keddellsare a loyal, thoroughly trustworthy & generouspair and I can only wish them all the very bestfor a long and happy retirement.

Dear Editor,The President of North Norfolk Speakers Club,

Stuart Richards, recently visited AshevilleSpeakers Club in North Carolina.

Both clubs are part of Toastmasters International, which has 14,650 clubs worldwide & since 1925has been helping people from all walks of lifeto gain condence in speaking and developskills in communication and leadership.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I was informedthat dress code was casual & it can be dauntingvisiting another club, especially wearing shorts!I was quickly put at ease by the warmth of thehospitality I received and as members of Toast-masters there was common ground and sharedexperience. I learned more about improvisedspeaking and left with new ideas to bring backto my own club.said Stuart.

    Dear Editor,

Below is a history of the Victoria Rd, Mundesley1912 HouseI would like to hear from anyonewho has anything to add to it.

Irst came to Mundesley when I was 12 or 13camping with the Boys Brigade at Trimingham.

We could not go onto the beach because mineswere still present. Later my wife & I would goto Mundesley with our children. Ben Flaxmanwas known to me, as he & I worked for ThomasMoy Ltd. My wife died some 9 years ago andfor the past 4+ years I have had for my friendand companion a lovely Mundesley lady.

The History Of The 1912 House

In 1912 & before James Farrow known as Jimmyworked for Thomas Moy in Cromer and was

asked by the Company to move to Mundesleyas Depot Foreman there, to which he agreed.Thomas Moy then built a house for him tolive in which was the 1912 House

He worked there for many years before he wastransferred to Harleston, living with him was hisgranddaughter Madge. She was great friendof my late wife is still a good friend of mine.

Dear Liz,I would like to take the opportunity through yourmagazine to thank all the visitors (many with theCrab Tales in their hand)who came to myArt Exhibition in Shirleys Shed duringtwo extended weekends in September.

The exhibition which proved very successful, was held to raise money for 2 charities close

to my heart, they areBreast Cancer Careand Lymphoedema Support Network.

The Success was due to the help from family, friends, neighbours and the many Mundesleytraders who were so helpful in spreading theword with posters, invitations and by word ofmouth. Because of the help I was able to send200 to Breast Cancer Careand 180 toLyphoedema Support Network

As a P.S, I would like to say THANK YOUto Mundesley and the surrounding villages.

    Dear Editor,

Im not sure if you can help but on Friday 9thOctober while on a short break to Cromer myhusband lost his afliated working mens clubcards, in a small brown leather wallet, we believethis could have been either in Sheringham or

between East Runton, The Gap along the beachto Cromer & back or between East Runton viathe road along to Hazelbury caravan site & up

by the cottages or along Runton road to the backof our accommodation at Seascape House.

This is a long shot as we tried to retrace our stepsbut had no luck as it was a couple of hours laterbefore we realised.

Weve spent many happy weeks in Cromer overthe years at one time in our own static caravan

but this is the rst time weve ever lost anything.

If the wallet is found we will gladly reimbursepostage as the wallet was sentimental as it wasmade by his mum who sadly died years ago.

Name on the cards is Ronald James and theclub was St. James WMC Northampton.

    Yours hopefully,

    Sandra E James (Mrs.)

When Jimmy moved to Harleston Ben Flaxmantook control of the coal business and lived in

the 1912 House. There are probably a numberof your readers who remember Ben. Madge,Jimmys granddaughter still lives in Norwich.

I recorded the following comments:Brilliantly put together, very good, lovelytaste, the lamb was brilliant, very tasty.

Amazing, First class, could not faultthem at all.One couple shared my overall thoughts.

Brilliant, wonderful 11 out of 10.

After a most enjoyable evening, I drove ehome feeling very well fed & more thanhappy to become a regular diner in thefuture. Next time I will take Lis withme as she was unable to spare thetime on that evening.

The White Horse on Cromers West Street

is only a couple of doors towards the towncentre of Cromer from my ofce front door,so as locals, we (Lis & I) have noticed theway that Annie has run this place so wellover the years that she has been running it.

You cannot but admire Annies way ofdoing business and she always as a smileon her face, while being honest, up front

and clear in what she expects and

gets from her customers, who areall always happy.

Yes there are many pubs in the towngenerally, but few can equal the levelof service that Annie and her partnerKen offer their happy customers.

    People Often

Complain........about the police, but you rarely hear about thepositive things they do, such as this incidentinvolving a biker and a frozen carburetor.

Last January on a bitterly cold wintersday, a North Dakota State Trooper onpatrol came upon a motorcyclist whowas stalled by the roadside.

The biker was swathed in heavy protectiveclothing and wearing a full-face helmet toprotect the face from the cold weather.

    Whats the matter?asked the Trooper.

    Carburetors frozen,was the terse reply.

Pee on it. Thatll thaw it out.I cant, said the biker.

OK, watch me closely and Ill show you.

The Trooper unzipped and promptly warmedthe carburetor as promised.

Moments later the bike started and the riderdrove off, waving.

A few days later, the local State Troopersofce received a note of thanks from thefather of the motorcyclist.

It began: I would like to thank you on behalfof my daughter Jill...

Thanks to Roger Knowles for this

Cletus Is Passing..........by Billy Bobs hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bobdoing a slow and sensual striptease in frontof an old John Deere tractor.

Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off rst the right strap of hisoveralls, followed by the left.

He then hunches his shoulders forward and in aclassic striptease move, lets his overalls fall downto his hips, revealing a torn & frayed plaid shirt.

Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips itapart to reveal his stained T-shirt underneath.

With a nal ourish, he tears the T-shirt from hisbody & hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.

Having seen enough, Cletus rushes in and says,

What the worldre ya doing, Billy Bob?

Good grief, Cletus, ya scared the bejeebersout of me,says an obviously embarrassedBilly Bob .......

But me n the wife been havin troublelately in the bedroom dpartment, andthe therapist suggested I do somethingsexy to a tractor.

Thanks to David Thorne for this.

The CoasthopperThe future of a popular coastal bus service hasbeen secured, following agreement betweenthe NCC and Stagecoach in Norfolk.

The Coasthopper service, which annually carriesaround 500,000 passengers, will run an hourlyservice from October 12th between Hunstantonand Cromer until Easter 2016.

The councils longstanding investment in Coast-hopper, building the route from scratch, hadpreviously provided a platform for the summerelements to be operated on a commercial basis.

Now Stagecoach in Norfolk will also operatethis winter period & into next spring withoutcouncil subsidy.

Toby Coke, Chairman of NCCs Environment,

Development and Transport Committee, said:The Coasthopper represents a vital means oftransport for many residents in west Norfolkand across the north Norfolk coast, so itsgreat news that Stagecoach will continueto operate the route throughout the winterand until next spring.

The fact that the County Council has managedto ensure that no subsidy continues to berequired for this service means this is notjust good news for passengers but theNorfolk taxpayer as well.

Andy Campbell, Managing Director of StagecoachNorfolk, said: Coasthopper is a superb exampleof partnership working between public and

private sectors. The effort and investment putin by both parties since the service started in1996 has produced the success story that wesee today.

I am delighted that we have been able tosecure the future of the service with thewinter timetable until next spring.

    Rachaels Walk

The sponsored walk was arranged almostentirely by Rachael and was not her rstas she has done the same thing for othercharities in the past.

Last year Rachael joined the About With FriendsWorkskills team and worked one day a week inthe Community Caf in Tucker Street, Cromer.

However, she has been doing so well that shewas recently able to increase her days to four.

Rachael now works three days in the caf

and one day in the Production unit onMiddlebrook Way.

On her day off Rachael organised this sponsoredwalk which was 2 laps of a course that followedthe coastal path out of Cromer into East Runtonthen looped out round Incleboro Fields to WestRunton before turning back to Cromer.

She was seen off from the Charitys Holt Roadheadquarters by the Youth Advisory Board whowere meeting there and was met about 4 hourslater by the About With Friends adult socialgroup who were in the caf prior to visitingthe cinema.

New ZealandA Users Guide By John Clarke

New Zealand is the most beautiful country in theworld, as is clearly stated in the UN Charter.

The land is nourished by warm sunshine eachmorning and receives good rainfall aroundlunchtime. It is an egalitarian nation made upof well over four million rugged individualistsand naturally gifted sportspeople and is run onalternate days by the government and whoeverbought the national infrastructure.

Like Australia, New Zealand was established asa colonial economy by the British. This meantthey bought our wool & our meat, although notfor our benet. It was purchased from the farmersby British companies, shipped on British ships

and processed in British factories before beingsold in British shops in British currency. Themoney then went into British banks.

I think we can probably all see the problem here. The British made more out of New Zealand than

New Zealanders did. This changed slightly in theearly 1970s when Britain went into the CommonMarket. Kids had been doing school projects aboutthis throughout the 60s but it came as an enormoussurprise to the New Zealand government and ithas taken them some time to adjust.

The principal business in N.Z. used to be sheep butthe country has now moved into milk in a big wayand if youd like to enjoy the beautifully cleanswift-owing New Zealand river system, youshould make every effort to get out there before

the dairy industry gets any more successful.

New Zealand also produces large quantities offruit, wine, sh, coal, wood pulp, ightless birds,

cups of tea, middle-distance runners and otherpeoples lm industries.

Before the British, the Maori people arrived fromHawaii in 1273, at about 4.15pm. There wereallegedly people here before called the Moriori, and may have been people even before that.

Like most major democracies, N.Z. is run byinternational capital and a few local big-shotswho tickle the till and produce a set of annualaccounts in a full range of colours.

The national parliament is in Wellington althoughvery little of any importance has ever occurredthere. The country works a lot better during theweekends than during the week, there are no statesand the senate voted itself out of existence after

WW2. When the Lower House eventually followstheir excellent example, constitutional expertsagree the next step will be beers all round.

In 1893, women in New Zealand were the rstin the world to get the vote and more recentlywomen have run as Prime Minister, OppositionLeader, Chief Justice and Governor General. Thecountrys most famous pop singer, best known

opera star, most famous short story writer, greatestnovelist and most consistent world championathlete are all women. Theyre not allowed inthe All Blacks as yet, but dont be fooled. Its

just a matter of time. New Zealand women arestroppy, imaginative and a major strength inboth the Maori and Pakeha cultures. In someNew Zealand families, women are practicallyrunning things.

During the 1970s, New Zealand was confrontedby very serious economic and political crises, although according to police records, theressome suspicion these were both inside jobs.

During that time N.Z. rugby administrators wereex-forwards who looked like spuds in their jacketsand when they announced that they were sendinganAll Blackteam on a tour to South Africa, therewere suggestions it might be time to go and getsome new spuds, and maybe some whod playedin the backs. At this stage Nelson Mandela had

served about 10 of his 27 years in prison and therest of the world took the radical left-wing positionthat democracy might be worth a try in the region.

New Zealand Prime Minister Norman Kirk wentto see the Rugby Union.

Im the Prime Ministerhe explained. Is that right?said the spuds.

Wed rather you didnt go to South AfricasaidNorman It will look like an endorsement of thewhite supremacist policies of the South Africangovernment, to which we are opposed.

So what?said the spuds. (Im summarising abit here, obviously). So its not going to happen, explained Norman.

The spuds were furious. They saw this action bythe government as a direct threat to the way thecountry was run, & after a smaller Prime Ministerhad been elected in 1975, the tour went ahead.

As a result of New Zealands endorsement of thewhite supremacist South African regime, theMontreal Olympics in 1976 were boycotted by26 African nations. So what?said the spudsand the smaller Prime Minister.

And so it was that the return Springbok tour ofNew Zealand in 1981 was a famous disaster, forthe spuds and the government did not have thesupport of the people, the nation was divided &brother spoke not to brother, nor sister to sister, nor yet generation to generation, each of its kind.

And there was a gnashing of teeth and the scribeswere thrown into a great confusion & there came

a heavy sadness upon the people and upon theland, and upon the face of the deep.

The economic crisis of the 70s occurred over theissue of debt. Was the N.Z. economyborrowingtoo much overseas? While this question was beingconsidered by economists, a Debt for Equity Swapwas organised by a group called I Just Drovethe Getaway Vehicle.

At the time government policy had not yet beenout-sourced; we still owned the infrastructure,

the power, the gas, the water, the phones, thepost ofce and the national airline.

The Bank of N.Z. was still a New Zealand bankand one or two of the newspapers were still ownedin the country. During the early 1980s however, the New Zealand economy was put in the handsof nance ministers due to a ling error, andauthorities are still looking for the black box.

A social democracy with only one previous ownerwas asset-stripped and was replaced by a seriesof franchises. Rugby sides stopped being calledCanterbury, Wellington, OtagoandAucklandand were instead given the names of animals, colours and weather conditions.

The next thing anyone knew theyd appointed

a currency dealer as Prime Minister and theequities market became a place of worship.

New Zealanders dont have much trouble workingout what they think. Its the next bit that mightneed some work. In 1969 I was standing in a pubin a country town in Otago.

Theyd run out of Speights & we were drinkinga beverage produced in the north. The man nextto me was deeply unimpressed and made anumber of uncharitable statements aboutthe quality of what was on offer.

You dont like it?I said. I donthe conrmed

Its bloody terriblehe said. He then thought fora moment and resolved the matter in his mind.

This the worst beer Ive ever tastedhe said.

Ill be glad when Ive had enough. This probably wasnt the answer.

Complaining about whats wrong but nottaking action, has the same effect as notnoticing whats wrong.

Incidentally, N.Z. remains the most beautifulcountry in the world. Theres no question aboutthis. You can go to any part of it with condence,at any time of year, with the possible exceptionof Hawera at Christmas, Otautau in Augustand Taihape in a stiff westerly.

    From William Keddell

As a former Kiwi who moved to the UK in late1979, I have to say that life in New Zealand haschanged rather a lot in the last few decades.

Because of the low level of population, it doestend to still be rather lacking in different styles

and approaches to life generally.Yes, it is still very beautiful and remains a verypleasant place to visit, as I do every two or soyears, but it is not somewhere to live.

Many thanks to my brother William foremailing this to us.

County Councillor for Hoveton and Stalham,Nigel Dixon, said:I am pleased that our workon the Conservation Area & heritage at formerRAF Coltishall has been recognised by the twodistrict councils & Historic England, and thatScottow Enterprise Park has now become anattractive place for businesses and the localcommunity. When we think back to what thesite looked like when we bought it two and ahalf years ago, it is clear to anyone who goesthere today that its being transformed. Thereis obviously still a lot of work to be done, butwe are heading in the right direction and thatsbeen taken into account in this latest report.

Archaeological sites are on the list of ConservationAreas & Scheduled Monuments at Risk when

they are recognised as being amongst the mostsignicant archaeological remains in England.

They range from burial mounds and hillfortsto 20th century industrial and military sites, providing immense historical depth to theplaces and landscapes.

Leader of Norfolk County Council, GeorgeNobbs, said: The site is really starting tocome back to life which is why we boughtit in the rst place to give this much-lovedRAF base a new lease of life.

I visited it only a few days ago and wasimpressed with the level of activity there.

Coming off the at risk register not only meansweve made signifcant progress & that Historic

England thinks that its in good hands, but thatit will also hopefully act as a stimulus for peopleto visit and operate at the site.

We now have 14 companies operating at Scottow Enterprise Park employing 64 people (full timeequivalents) and we hope this number willsteadily grow continuing to boost thelocal economy.

Mental WellbeingMindfulness, Emotional Wellbeing &Mental Health (Whats it all about)!

Hello and welcome to my new column whereeach month I will be exploring the many facetsof emotional and mental wellbeing in practiceand theory.

First I would like to share a bit about myself.

My name is David Maddax I am 44 yrs old anda fully qualied Person-Centred Counsellor

and member of the British Association forCounselling and Psychotherapy.

For the last 15 years I have been working with abroad range of organisations large & small mainlyin the public, volunteer and community sectors.

My work has not only involved counselling butrunning various workshops around our under-standing of emotional & mental wellness, the

practical application of mindfulness to our dailylives as well as demystifying and challengingtaboos about mental health in todays society.

I have also facilitated various support groupsfor health issues such as prostate Cancer, andspent 12 months training with Indian Yogamasters as well as a meditative guru.

I moved to the village of Sidestrand earlier thisyear and hope to continue & expand on this workwithin the community by offering various work-shops & courses outlined above as well as dropin sessions where people can come along for acup of tea and a chat and ask any questions theywish around these subjects or others in relationto emotional wellbeing.

Each month I will cover subject matter relevantto communities living in rural communities suchas the impact of isolation, who cares for the carer, recession depression, mindfulness & meditation, what does counselling mean for me and more.

(If you have a particular subject you would likeme to write about please drop me an email andI will endeavour to do so).

After moving into a new area I naturally beganto explore community activities within thelocal area during the summer and was greatlyimpressed by the myriad of activity groupsavailable in North Norfolk.

From hobbies based, including arts & crafts, small festivals, lots of car-boot sales, whichI love exploring, music, to gardening andoffering so much for me to engage in.

Of course as a counsellor I also took note ofspecialist therapeutic opportunities withinthe area and found limited options.

As in much of the country, due to the currentnancial situation, funding has been cut out ofsuch services and rural areas such as Norfolk

have been hit hard, yet there is a substantialneed for such provision especially with theincrease in mental health issues in our fastmoving and highly pressurized society.

Yet the costs and lack of understanding of suchsupport can be discouraging for many people.

This is something I hope to challenge as wellas focusing on ways of nurturing our mentalhealth to avoid the pitfalls that can lead toan imbalance in our overall wellbeing.

If you wish to contact me about anything inthis issues article please drop me a line.

Or if you would like me to attend one of yourgroups for a discussion please get in touch.

I am easily persuaded with a cup of tea and aslice of cake or even better a bacon butty!.

Historic AirfieldNo Longer At RiskThe Second World War and Cold War formeraireld, RAF Coltishall, has been rescued andremoved from Historic Englands Heritage atRisk Register annual survey of the health ofthe historic environment.

This time last year the aireld was described asbeing in very bad condition & deterioratingor deteriorating signifcantly. But now the sitehas been restored to good enough condition toenable it to reach the requirements to beremoved from the list.

When the County Council purchased the sitefor 4m in 2013, it had been decaying formore than six years as it was unused.

The 2nd World War, Cold War & later landscapewas overgrown and neglected and many of thebuildings had leaking roofs, broken windowsand were in urgent need of repairs.

Working with local communities, Nth Norfolkand Broadland Councils, the Spirit of ColtishallAssoc. & Historic England, the County Councilquickly started to reverse the sites decline, andvisitors and people working for businesses atthe newly named Scottow Enterprise Parktoday see a huge improvement.

In addition to day-to-day grounds and buildingmaintenance of the 600-acre site, recent heritageprojects have included detailed surveys andconservation repairs on a Second World Warghter pen and its shed and refurbishment ofpart of the iconic control tower so it can beopened up for visitors.

Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth rowstands on her chair and starts shouting:

Ive heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes.

What makes you think you can stereotypeblonde women that way?

What does the colour of a womans hair haveto do with her worth as a human being?

Its men like you who keep women like mefrom being respected at work and in thecommunity, and from reaching our fullpotential as people.

Its people like you that make others thinkthat all blondes are dumb!

You and your kind continue to perpetuatediscrimination against, not only blondes, but women in general... pathetically, allin the name of humour!

The Benefits ofParaffin WaxYou Dont Need To SufferYou may already be familiar with parafnwax as a luxurious addition to a manicureor pedicure.

But you may be surprised at what elseparafn wax can offer, its benets gobeyond skin-deep!

Parafn wax is a common option in heattherapy treatments for people with arthritisor other rheumatic disorders.

Doctors, Physiotherapists, Podiatrists andArthritis specialists, have recommendedParafn Wax therapy since the 1960s.

It is one of the most effective ways ofapplying heat to reduce the swelling inmuscles, tendons and ligaments.

It can decrease inammation of joints andconnective tissues, soothing aches and

pain and also improving circulation oftired and sore muscles plus aidingwith water retention.

Decades later, it became widely used asa beauty treatment to soften skin.

This petroleum-based product hydrates andsoftens skin while coating the skins surface.

It also increases circulation to the skin andopens pores, which allows the hydratingelements to penetrate the outer layersof the skin. This makes it a goodcandidate for treating dry skin& moisturising cuticles.

The treatment is particularly popular in thewinter when people experience seasonal dryskin, cracked heels & hands allowing forincreased movement and mobility.

    How Heated Parafn Is Applied

Prior to your treatment the area will bethoroughly cleansed and gently massagedusing appropriate oils or creams.

Because its a soft wax, it melts at a lowerthan normal temperature in a controlled

electric heat chamber, this means thatthe skin can be coated without causingburning or blistering.

The warmed wax is applied to the chosenarea from the individual spray cartridges, eliminating any possible cross contaminationthat may possibly occur with other sharingparafn bath options. Once the wax hascooled it will set and can be easily peeledaway leaving you with super soft skinand all the benets of above!

Clients can sit in comfort on an electrichydraulic chair while having treatment.

The treatments cost 20 for feet,

20 for hands and for both 35.

Below are just a few examples of theletters that I have received:

I am so glad I came to Liz to have waxtreatment on my feet as it has made somuch difference in the few weeks I havebeing coming. I suffer with arthritis andit is heavenly after my treatment, my feet

    feel so much better. Jean.

After trying the parafn wax treatment ithas helped so much for the stiffness inthe joints of my ngers, will denitelycontinue thank you

Over time, protection from the injected uvaccine gradually decreases and u strainsoften change.

For this reason new u vaccines are producedeach year which is why people advised to havethe u jab need it every year too.

Flu can be more severe in certain people, such as: anyone over the age of 65

    pregnant women

children and adults with an underlying healthcondition (particularly long-term heart orrespiratory disease)

children and adults with weakenedimmune systems

Anyone in these risk groups is more likely todevelop potentially serious complications ofu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), soit is recommended that they have a uvaccine every year to protect them.

The u vaccine is given free on the NHSas an annual injection to:

adults over the age of 18 at risk of u(including everyone over 65)

children aged six months to two years

    at risk of u

The u vaccine is given as an annualnasal spray to:

children aged two to 17 years at a particularrisk of u

healthy children aged two, three and fouryears old

    some year groups at school

Flu can be unpleasant, but if you are otherwisehealthy it will usually clear up on its own withina couple of weeks.

Inuenza (fu)has many symptoms includingfever, tiredness, aches & pains, headache, sorethroat & cough. Most people who are otherwiset & well do not need to see a doctor with ubut DO need to treat the symptoms.

Paracetamol and/or ibuprofen will help thefever, headache and aches whilst a coughlinctus (ask your local pharmacy for onesuitable for you)will help the cough.

It is important to rest whilst you have u andmost people end up on the sofa or in bed!

Drink plenty of uids (you may lose your appetite)take regular painkillers and be aware that whilstthe acute symptoms of fever etc. resolve inaround a week, the general fatigue associatedwith u often takes another week or two toresolve completely and you may need sometime off work at this stage.

If you have a fever you are probably infectiousso please avoid coming to the surgery andspreading the u, but ask the receptionistto make you a telephone appointment.

If your symptoms are not resolving within twoweeks of onset or you have a chronic medicalcondition it may be worth discussing yoursymptoms with a nurse or doctor.

NNCs Public Health is supportingnew legislation preventing peoplesmoking in vehicles carryinganyone under 18.

The new law makes it illegal fordrivers or passengers to light upin a vehicle in a bid to protectchildren from the dangers ofsecondhand (passive) smoke.Secondhand smoke contains over4,000 chemicals & exposure to itcan lead to an increased risk ofcancer, heart disease, bronchitisand cot death.

People failing to comply with thenew rules could face a 50 xedpenalty notice.

Suzanne Meredith, a Consultantat Public Health at NCC, said:

More than 80% of secondhandsmoke is invisible and odourlessbut just because you cant see itdoesnt mean its harmless.

Smoking is the biggest cause ofearly death & quitting smoking iswhat we want people to do. Buthopefully the new law will makepeople think about the health ofothers, especially children.

Research shows that many youngpassengers feel embarrassed orworried about asking adults to stopsmoking which is which is whythe rules are an important stepin protecting children from theharm of secondhand smoke.

The health risks of exposure tosecondhand smoke are wellestablished and in the UK ithas been against the law tosmoke in vehicles used forwork since July 2007.

According to the British LungFoundation, more than 430,000children are exposed to secondhand smoke in cars each week.
