Research Interest

Chan’s major research interests include aerosol chemistry and air pollution. His current research

interest focuses on gas–particle interactions in both laboratory and field studies. He specializes in

single aerosol particle levitation using an electrodynamic balance to study systematically the

hygroscopic properties, phase transformation and thermodynamics of atmospheric aerosols. He

also uses Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy to understand the relationship between the

hygroscopic properties of droplets and their molecular structural properties from diluted to

supersaturated droplets and more recently heterogeneous reactions of organic aerosols. In field

studies, he is interested in understanding how gas–particle interactions affect the size distributions

of ionic (both inorganic and organic) species, aerosol acidity, and sampling artifacts of semi-volatile

species in aerosols. Recently, he served as Project Manager of the HKUST Air Quality Research

Supersite, specializing in the real time characterization of particulate pollutants for source

apportionment and particle formation analysis. He is responsible for real time aerosol mass

spectrometry and hygroscopic measurements of ambient aerosols.
