THREADS LECTURE

On the 28th of October 2014 Kois Associated Architects were invited to present their projects as a practice up that day. The title of the lecture was “Threads” and I participated in the production of 3d, 2d and physical models of the projects, for a documentary we had preparedfor the presentation.During that period I had an excellent chance of studying their projects.

THE CYCLADIC ART MUSEUM

A competition that was won by Kois Associated Architects, the project was about the renovation of the Museum expansion originally built by the architect Ioannis Vikelas. The proposal is currently under construction, we wanted the site and the museum to meet their potential. We designed a facade that will be in harmony with the already existing one and will enhance the museum’s presence. The proposed facade is designed to provide shade and privacy to the desired location, act as a thematic scheme for the museum and constitute a pause to the visual ambiguity of the aggregation of buildings that comprise the street facade. We envisaged the museum facade to float above the street in order to create a clear and unmistakable entry point, to draw people from outside, to provide shade, shelter and an urban meeting point. The proposed facade creates a new entrance and connects the atrium that is flooded with light during the day with the street. The atrium with the cafe and the nearby shop becomes the destination of the route. I was in charge of making the physical model of the atrium aluminiumperogola. I had to test the various thicknesses of the individual elements before the actual pergola was built. And I also drew the technical details of the facade elements before it was sent for production to the manufacturer.

ILEANA MAKRI JEWELLERY SHOP

The shop is located in the center of Athens, the goal was to go beyond the given architectural typologies of an oridinary jewellery shop and create a concept store that would reflect the multifaceted aspect of the client’s creations and the ethos of her work.

Natural unprocessed materials such as metal, glass, wood and stone were used which focus on creating a dialectic relationship between the authenticity that characterizes Ileana’s work. The jewels are displayed on of steel and glassstructures that resemble trees that offer the viewer a 360 degree angle view, for a closer inspection.

The facade is composed by three parts, one on the far left that is trasparent where a metal tree exhibits the jewels and offers a view of the staircase that leads to the basement where the workshop of the shop is, the heavy dark oak door which is the main entrance to the shop and next to it a glass panel that hosts an artificial cloud, a constantly changing veil, that regulates the views from the exterior to the interior and creates a sense of mystery and ethereal enclosure.

STUDENT HOUSING IN VERONA COMPETITION

The project is located on the riverfront of Adige river in the city of Verona in Italy, at the proximity of the spanish city walls.

A degraded part of the city where the proposal aims to requalify the context, and inspire further urbaninterventions to the area.

The building is a rectangular volume that is composed of juxtaposed rectangles that create strong shadow contrasts on the facade and give a strong visual identity on the side onthe riverfront.

The functions that the building hosts are: rooms for the students, auditorium, conference halls, internet cafe, library and kitchens.

The Milanese Diocese Museum is housed in a fifteenth century Dominicanmonastery that has been bombarded during the second world war, thebombardment destroyed one of the four wings of the courtyard, which still remains in the same state that is unrestored, surrounded by a provisionary wooden wall. It is situated between a traffic artery and a park and there is a car park inbetween the two, which hides the main entrance to the museum. Its location therefore creates an opportunity for an expansion to be built. The proposal is composed of two buildings, a curvilinear that reveals themuseum and connects the road with the park and a glass building that envelopes the bombarded section, but also keeps visible the damage of the building.Inside these buildings are located a coffee shop, a library, the new col-lections, a storage space and a conference room.

HOUSE FOR A PERSON WITH MOTOR DISABILITY

The following proposal is defined by the constrictions of the site (a rectangle lot of thirty metres by five metres)

The vertical communication is possible via a ramp and an elevator.

The natural light enters the house from the main facades but also from the open garden in the middle of the house.

The rooms are located on the first and second floor, while the services are on the ground floor (kitchen, living room, garden, parking space).
