    ABOUT YOUR DETECTOR

Your CZ-20 Quic kSilver is truly an a ll-purpose meta l detec to rengineered for land, beach, salt and fresh-water treasurehunters. Here are some important built-in features:

1.Leakproof: Submersib le to 250 fee t, headphonesand a ll.2.3-Tone Target I.D.: A low tone for iron; a mid-tonefor pull tabs, foil and most gold rings; and a hightone for U.S. coins, silver ring s and some gold ring s.3.Visua l Target Response: Two b right, red LEDs flashover targets, varying in intensity according totarget signal strength.4. Depth: Patented Fourier domain signal analysis.Tw o deep-seeking, ground-compensat ing VLFsignals (one at 5 KHz and one at 15 KHz) providetwice as much target information for accurateanalysis and identification.5.Two Search Modes: A silent-running , slow-motion

target-I.D. mode and a hot, wide-scan autotunemod e for a ll-me ta l sea rc hing.6. VCO No-Mot ion Pinpoint ing: Just push thepinpoint button and the signal tone increases inp i t ch and vo lume as t he cen te r o f t he co i lapproaches the target.7. Big - Ta rge t A le rt: Ordinary detector c i rcui tsoverload on la rge, sha llow ta rgets, identifying themas good ta rgets. But not the CZ-20. A d istinc tive b elltone immediately warns you that the target is toolarge to identify.8.Faint-Targe t Aud io Boost: The lower range of thevolume control is like any other that youve used. But as you increase it above mid-range, strongta rget sounds rem ain a t a fixed volume while fa int,

deep-ta rget sounds c ontinue to get loud er.9. Pushbutton Ground Balance: Just push thepinpoint button and lower the coil to the ground. Then set the g round c ontrol just below the aud iotone and you are precisely tuned for on-s i teconditions.

    1. Adjust the stem length and coil angle so thesearch coil rests flat on the ground about 6 inchesin front a nd slightly to the right o f your foo t (to the

left o f your left foo t if you re left handed ).2. Leave enough slack in the coil cable to allowthe coil to swivel as far as it can in either direction. The c oil w ing nut should be tight enoug h to p reventthe coil from moving.3. You should now be able to move into yoursearch position by leaning slightly forward andra ising the searc h c oil no more than 2 inc hes abovethe ground. Your arm should still be straight, andthe c oil should be p a ra llel to the g round , about 12inc hes in front o f your foo t. The c oil ang le may haveto be slightly readjusted at this point.

SETTING UP FOR DIVINGUnlike most VLF metal detectors, the CZ-20 works well in salt

wa te r. This c a p a b ility, a long w ith its d eep -seeking sensitivity, makes it idea l for underwater trea sure hunt ing and wrec k d iving .The CZ-20 is wa terproof to a depth o f 250 feet. Remember, a lwayspractice safe diving methods.

When diving with your CZ-20, use the shortest stem lengthpossib le, with the extra c ab le w rapped tightly around the stem ,

as closely as possible to the control housing.

    1. Ad just the stem length a s short as you c an withouthaving the search coil detect your diving gear.2. Adjust the search coil parallel to the sea bed,

river or lake bottom.3. Make sure extra cable is coiled tightly on theupper stem as closely as possible to the controlhousing , with just enough slac k near the searc h coilto a llow it to swivel as fa r as it c an in either d irec tion.Too muc h loo se c ab le nea r the sea rc h c oil ma ygenerate false signals.4. Remove the tethered earphone plugs for rapidpressure equa liza tion as you d ive and return to thesurface.

Caut ion : Hipmount ing the CZ-20 contro l housing is not rec ommended for underwa ter use. The sea rc h coil c ab le maybec ome entang led with a submerged ob jec t, ma king it d iffic ultfor the diver to resurface quickly in case of emergency.

SETTING UP FOR HIPMOUNTINGFor almost-effortless treasure hunting, the control housing is

easily removed from the handle and attached to a belt clip.

    SETTING UP

You can hipmount your CZ-20 by sliding the control housing from thehand le a nd a tta c hing it to your belt. This red uc es the w eight o f thestem, c rea ting nea rly e ffortless hunting.

    9

Hipmounting the CZ-20 in this manner takes about half theweight off the handle and allows the land or shallow-waterTrea sure Hunter to searc h muc h longer without a rm fa tigue.

    1. Grasp the ha nd le g rip firmly with one ha nd andthe control housing with the other.2. Slid e t he c o ntro l ho using o ff the m o untingbracket by pulling it toward you.3. Slide the belt c lip into g rooves on the b ottom ofthe c ontrol housing . This is a snug fit, and you ll ha veto bend the c lip slightly.4. Unwrap just enough of the coil cable to allowfor searching.5. Slip the c ontro l housing onto your belt, left sidefor right handers, right side for left handers.

NOTE: Because of the extreme sensitivity of the CZ-20 searchcoi l , hipmounting the control housing may produce a false

signal when the search coil reaches the end of its arc (on theside that the control box is attached to your belt). Dependingon your stem length and how high you have the housinghipmounted , the sea rc h c oil ma y ac tually detec t the housing.

Release the PINPOINT buttonand youre ready to search.

    3. Always ground balance your CZ-20 in the areasyou intend to search, whether i t s on land orunderwater.

NOTES:1. If you get an audio response as you first lower the coil with

the GROUND control at 10, youre probably over a pieceof metal. Move and try again.2. If you get a sudden bell tone that is not preceded by anincreasing audio response as you lower the coi l , youreprobably in some very highly mineralized soil or sand. In thisc ase, it s best to use the bob b ing me thod , paying pa rtic ula ra ttention to the notes under pa ragraph 7.3.If you don t get any aud io response, or just a very fa int one

Lower the coi l to an inch or two above theground and then quickly raise it. Note that as youlow er the c oil, the tone d isappea rs then gets loud er

as you raise it and finally returns to normal whenyou s top i t 6 to12 inches above the ground.Conversely, if you set the GROUND control to 1,the threshold hum will get louder as you lower thec oil and d isappea r when you ra ise it.3. Your objective now is to adjust the GROUNDcontrol so that there is no change, or only aminimum change in the threshold hum, as you move

silent as you raise it.3) The hum will rema in the same, or if it c hangesslightly, the change is the same whether youlower or raise the coil.

    4. If the hum remains the same or changes onlyslightly (as in step 3 above), your CZ-20 is properlyground b a lanced , and you are rea dy to b eg in yoursearch.

    5. If the tone fades as you lower the c oil (as in step1), continue to lower the ground balance settingin sma ll inc rements until the threshold hum rema insthe same (or changes very l itt le) as the coil islowered and raised.

    SEARCH MODES

Your CZ-20 has two searc h modes: Target I.D. and Autotune .Both sea rc h mo des a re motion modes, meaning the sea rc hc oil must be in motion to detec t a target.

AUTO TUNESe t t he DISC c o nt ro l to AUTOTUNE, and yo u re in a ve ry

sensitive, wide-sc an, a ll-meta l, mo tion sea rc h mode. Sinc e this

mode respond s to a ll meta l ta rgets and does not ha ve the ab ilityto identify or rejec t ob jec ts, this will p robab ly not b e your norma lsearch mode.

The Autotune m od e d oes have some a dvantages, however, which make it useful to use in at least three situations:

    1. Non-Trashy Areas.Since the Autotune mod e ha sa wider scan tha n the I.D. mode, you re less likely tom iss a g ood ta rg et w hen using it. Sea rc h in the

Autotune mod e until you find a ta rget. Pinpoint the

ta rget using the PINPOINT button and then switc h theDISC control to 0 to identify it. The DISC control is

positioned so that you can switch back and forth

between AUTOTUNE and 0 with a flick of your thumb.

    2. Highly Mineralized Soil or Sand . The Auto tunemode is rec ommended for b lac k and g ray bea c hesor highly mineralized soil. Under these conditions itmay be nec essary to lower the Sensitivity level and

sweep several inches off the ground (see the noteunder paragraph 7 on p. 14) Gold nuggets aregenerally found in highly mineralized soil so this willbe the search mode of choice for prospectors.3. All Metals Searching.Evidenc e rec overy teams,a rcheolog ists and p rofessiona l und erwater TreasureHunters will often op t fo r the deep sea rc h, all-meta ls

    Autotune mode.

TARGET I.D.When the DISC c ontrol is set in the 0-6 positions, the CZ-20 has

the ab ility to identify ma ny types of sma ll ta rgets and, depend ingon the d isc rimina tion level, rejec t or ignore most o f them. To better

  • 8/9/2019 CZ-20

understand just how your CZ-20 responds to different targets, trythe following:

    1. Scatte r some sample ta rgets suc h as coins, rings, pull tabs, nails and foil on the ground at least 18inc hes apart. Inc lude some large ta rgets as well: jar

lids, soda cans, etc.2. Set the DISC c ontrol a t 0, SENS a t 5. Ad justthe VOLUME control for a comfortable level whenyou are over a large target.3. Ground balance the CZ-20 as in the GroundBalance procedure.

    4. Hold the sea rc h c oil about 2 inches above andpara llel to the ground and move it slow ly ba c k andforth ac ross eac h sample. Rem em ber, the c oil mustbe in motion to get a response. Keep in mind tha tfor accurate target I.D., the coil center must passdirectly over the target.

    5. Note the dif ferent audio responses over thevarious targets. Your CZ-20 will respond with a lowtone over most iron or steel targets. Pull tabs andfoil will g ive a medium-tone response and U.S. coinswill give a high-tone response.6. Note tha t an elonga ted ferrous ob jec t suc h as anail will give you a double beep as you cross it

from end to end or a sing le beep, if you c ross its

center.7. When you go over a large, shallow target theCZ-20 will respond with a d istinc tive bell tone. Thisis due to the fact that metal detectors can onlyidentify small targets. What usually happens is that

the detector circuits will overload and identify ata rget a s good (silver, co ins, etc .). Your CZ-20,

however, will alert you to the fact that the targetis b ig and shal low, and cannot be accuratelyidentified. (Big deep targets, however, will usuallybe classified as a coin. Also be aware that coins

on the surface may set off the bell tone if you gettoo close. And the smaller 5-inch coil is more likelyto overload than the 8- or 10 1/2-inch coils.

    8. Most silver rings will give a high tone. Most goldrings will fa ll into the pull tab / foil mid -tone c a tegory. This is due to the unavoidab le fa c t tha t most gold

rings are conductively similar to aluminum foil andpull ta bs. Some a re more c losely identic a l to theU.S. 5-c ent p iec e; how ever, the CZ-20 does ha vethe unique ab ility to separa te those signa ls from thealuminum trash signals.9. Now inc rease the DISC c ontrol to 1. You w illfind tha t the CZ-20 rejec ts the sma ll, iron ta rgets and

no longer responds with an audio tone.10. Continue to inc rease your DISC c ontrol, notingthat w ith eac h suc c essive step up you rejec t moreand more ta rgets. At DISC = 4 for examp le, youare in a c oins-only mod e, ignoring iron, tabs andfoil while ac c ep ting U.S. coins.

    11. Use the ta rget I.D. dec a l on the left underside ofyour c ontrol housing graphica lly disp lays which items

    12. You may expect varying signals over different

targets and at different levels of discrimination.Note that as you progress ive ly increase the

discrimination level you eliminate more and moretargets.13. Now switc h the DISC c ontrol to the AUTOTUNEposition and note the completely different kind ofresponse. No tone, just a smoother, solid responseover every target.

NOTE: Be aware that due to the virtually infinite variety of sizes, shapes and al loys of many good targets (rel ics, jewelry, foreign coins, etc. ) , they may be ident i f ied as just about anything. For example, a Civil War mini ball may be identifiedas foil, or a new Canadian coin as a rectangular pull tab.

Good sea rc h tec hniques a re every b it a s imp ortant a s having agood detec tor.

    1. Ma ke sure your CZ-20 is prop erly ground ba lanc ed .2. Dec ide w hic h sea rch mode you re g oing to use:

    PINPOINTING

Target loc a tion is quic k and easy using the pushbutton Pinpointmode. You d o not have to keep the c oil moving to g et a responsein this mode.

    1. Once the presence of a target is indicated bythe beep-beep of your CZ-20, simply move thecoil away from the target area, and with the coillightly on the ground or very close to it, press andhold the PINPOINT button. (It d oesn t matte r whic hmode you re searc hing in, Autotune or Ta rget I.D.)2. As you bring the coil back into the target area, still p ressing the PINPOINT button, the aud io vo lumeand pitch will increase.3. When the p itc h and volume a re a t their highestpoints, stop the coi l and move i t forward andbackward a couple of times, again stopping overthe strongest response.4. Rep ea t one more time , side to side and then front

to bac k, keep ing the PINPOINT button pushed in,stop p ing ove r the spot w here you get the maximumvolume and pitch.

NOTE:Large o r sha llow ta rgets c an g ive a wide signa l when thep inpoint b utton is pushed . This c an make p inpointing d iffic ult.To p inpoint these la rge or sha llow ta rgets, find the edge of thewide signa l with the p inpoint button pushed . While ove r the edgeof the signa l, re lease the p inp o int b utton a nd re-push it. Thisautomatically decreases the sensitivity and narrows the widthof the pinpoint signal. By repeating this procedure a few timesover the edge of the w ide signa l, you c an narrow the p inpointsignal and pinpoint your target.

If youwa nt to know wha t kind of c oin it is, advance theDISC c ontrol to 5. You know from the I.D. dec a lthat if you lose the signal your target is probably anickel (or something conductive and very similar). If you d on t lose it, go up to 6. If you lose it a t 6,your ta rget may well be a U.S. zinc penny. If youstill get a signal, your target, if it is indeed a coin, will probably be a copper penny, an older silverc oin or a c lad c oin. Most o ther sma ll ta rgets will beignored.7. The same is true of the mid -tone ta rgets: Round

pu l l tabs a re re jec ted a t 2 , fo i l a t 3 andrectangular tabs at 4. If, for example, yourelooking for gold rings in an extremely trashy area, you have the a b ility to rejec t a t lea st som e of thetrash -say iron, round tabs and foil- and still getthose rings falling into the rectangular tab and allcoin categories. (Of course youl l have to digrectangular tabs as well.)8. Your CZ-20 will correctly identify most of thetargets on your I.D. decal most of the time, but itcan be fooled. Large targets, uneven groundmineral ization, good targets lying next to badtargets, deep targets, all of these and more aresources of error. Remember, the CZ-20 is designedto I.D. sma ll, c o in-sized ta rgets only, and even some

There a re a lmost a s many ways to dothis as there a re trea sure hunters. Wha tever works for you is goodenough as long as you dont break any laws, leave uncoveredholes or dama ge the environment e ither on land or underwa ter.

Genera lly spea king, d ivers and beac hc ombers do little, if any, damage to the environment while recovering small targets. However, if you p lan to use your CZ-20 on lawns or in pa rks, yourta rget-rec overy method c an be very important. FALSE SIGNALS

A false signal occurs when a target is incorrectlyidentified . For examp le , a small, broken-off p iec e of pull tabmay be identified as a nickel. Or a small, deep coin, especially

in m inera lized soil, may read IRON. The more sensitive themetal detector, the harder it is not to have false signals. YourCZ-20 is an extremely sensitive mac hine, so you re bound toenc ounte r them. Here a re som e of the most freq uent sourc esof fa lse signa ls and what to d o a bout them:

1.Trash: The most c ommon sourc e of fa lse signa ls.Large or irregular pieces of trash may give good, consistent, high-tone signals. In this case youllusua lly have to d ig the ta rget , but w ithexperienc e you ll be a b le to eliminate many ofthe large targets whose size will be obviouswhen you go into the pinpoint mode. Anotherfalse signal response may be a one-way ordisappearing signal. Youll sweep over the target

and get a good signa l but nothing on the returnsweep. When this happens youre over a targettha t the CZ-20 c an t positively identify due to itssize, sha pe, depth or a lloy. The CZ-20 ma y I.D. it a sa c oin when swep t from one d irec tion a nd ironon the return sweep. If your DISC c ontrol is set a t 0 you ll hea r first a high tone (c oin) and then alow tone (iron). Or if your DISC c ontrol is sethigher, to reject iron, youll hear the high tonesweeping one way and nothing the other way.Quite o ften the signa l will just d isappea r and youwon t be a b le to find it no ma tter whic h direc tionyou sweep. These one-way and d isappearingsignals are usually trash, and as a general ruleyou should ignore them. If you ha ve any doub ts,

p ress the PINPOINT button to get an ac c ura teloc a tion, and then I.D. the ta rget. If you get agood rep ea tab le tone , d ig it. If you still get aone-way signal or it disappears, move on. Also, ifyour pinpointing location is different than yourI.D. loc a tion, your ta rget is p rob ab ly a p iec e ofiron. Reduc ing your sensitivity leve l, ta king

shorter, slower sweeps, or increasing thediscrimination level may reduce the number offalse signals caused by trash.

    2.Deep Targe ts: Deep ta rgets, just barely within therange of the CZ-20, may be misidentif ied. Forexample, a deep c oin may I.D. as iron, or a deepp iec e of iron may I.D. as a c oin. There s not muc hyou can do to avoid this other than to use yourpinpoint mode to ensure that you are exact lyc entered over the ta rget. Or you may red uce yoursensitivity level so you just ignore the very deepesttargets.3. Elec trical Interference: Constant c hatter c ausedb y ra d io / TV sta t ions, p o w e r line s o r ne a rb ydetectors operating at one of the CZ-20 searchfrequenc ies. The best solution is to move away fromthe sourc e of the interferenc e. You may a lso try oneof the fol lowing: switch to the Autotune mode;

reduce your sensit iv i ty level; s low down yoursweep speed. If the interference is only minimaland you wish to continue searching anyway, testyour CZ-20 over a known target to make sure itsopera ting p roperly. Inside some build ings, elec tric a linterferenc e may be so b ad that you ll have to gooutside just to bench test your CZ-20.4. Highly Mineralized Soil: May cause a bell toneresponse or constant false signals. Check yourg round ba lance (see the Ground Ba lancesec tion referring to mine ra lized soil). Try loweringthe sensitivity and/or increasing the discriminationlevel. Sea rc h in the AUTOTUNE mode. Re-groundbalance using the bobbing method. If all elsefails, raise the search coil just high enough for the

false signals to disappear and then sweep at thatconstant height.5.Blac k Sand: Same as Highly Minera lized Soil.6.Wet Salt-Water Sand: Your CZ-20 should be ab leto hand le most w et sand easily unless it s b lac k (seeBlac k Sand above). You should ab le to red uce the

number of false signals caused by salt water bylowering your sensitivity and making sure you areground balanced properly.

    7. Hot Rocks: Some roc ks, b y virtue of the ir highminera l content, will be seen by meta l detec tors asa meta l ta rget. In the Autotune mode, the CZ-20 willrespond to most hot rocks. Prospec tors (who will mostlikely be using the Autotune mode in an a rea where

hot rocks abound), however, will learn to distinguishbetween ma ny hot roc k and nugget sounds. In thetarget-I.D. mode, certain types of hot rocks will beautomatic a lly rejec ted a t DISC = 0 and virtua llya ll other hot rocks will be identified as iron or rejec ted

at DISC = 1.8. End of Swing: Silent sea rc h mot ion detec torsoften g ive fa lse signa ls a t the ed ges of the sea rc hpat tern - jus t as the co i l s tops and beginsac c elera ting bac k tow ard the op era tor. If this is a

problem, try one or more of the following: Keepyour sweep smooth, slow and low to the ground.Check your g round ba lance . Lower yoursensitivity. Make sure your search coil is properlysecured and the cab le connec to r i s f i rm lytightened.9. Digg ing Tool: If youre carrying a metal sandsc oop , digg ing knife, or sc rew driver, hold it b ehindyour back or keep it above your waist. Your CZ-20is sensitive enough to sound off each time yousweep the coil beneath it.10. Elongated Ferrous Ob jec ts: If you ge t two beep sc lose together and c an t find e ither ta rget, you ma ybe near a nail or some other long, ferrous object.Fortunately, in most cases your CZ-20 will identify

these objects correctly; they just wont be whereyou think they are. In all cases, the target will bebetw een the beeps, or if you sweep a t right ang lesto your original direction, youll receive a singlebeep directly over the target.
