The website also has information aboutprofessionally printed copies of the deck, the iconoclastic Deco Decktet, and theDecktet Book.

The Decktet is offered for free under anopen license, thanks in part to support fromthe Decktet community.

This is a deck of cards with suits, ranks, andnamed images. It is, perhaps, the kind oftarot deck they use in the alternateuniverse where Charlemagne was a badger.Since it is structurally unlike earthly playingcard and tarot decks, you can do different

    things with it.

There are ten ranks of cards in the basicdeck: Aces are rank one, 2s are rank two,3s and so on up through 9s, and Crowns+are rank ten.

There are dozens of different games thatcan be played with the Decktet. To findrules and more, visit

    theEXCUSE

    theEXCUSE

The thirty-six card basic deck, with tenranks of cards, is the core of the Decktet. There are nine further cards that add on tomake the extended deck.

Many games have default rules for the basicdeck and optional rules for the extendeddeck cards. If you think of game design as

cooking, then the extended deck cards arelike adding cream. Adding them makes somegames richer, but it just adds fat to others. And in some games, it goes wrong andcurdles.

One of the extended deck cards is theExcuse (below). It has no suits and no rank.

The Pawns $ and Courts // (next page)are two additional ranks. Pawns and Courtshave three suits each. With Pawns andCourts in play, the order of ranks typicallybecomes:

    Ace, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, $, //, +
