    the campaign trail

Similar to any other election, there are always some candidates that are more well known than others. With household names like Bush and Clinton running in the 2016 Presidential Election, they may overshadow less-known contenders. As November 2016 nears, what should voters know about some of the candidates before casting their ballot?

DEMOCRATSAlthough vice president Joe Biden has not officially declared his run for presidency, there has been speculation that he will announce his decision before the end of September. Prior to this race, Biden dropped out of the 2008 presidential race. In addition to his vice president position, the Pennsylvania native was also a senator from Delaware for 36 years.

Former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clintons campaign emphasizes income equality and aiding the middle class, which will most likely reverberate with women. While she is one of the more popular candidates in the running, it is still a question as to whether or not corruption accusations will be a hindrance.

A former member of the 1960s Civil Rights organization, the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Bernie Sanders has consistently demonstrated his commitment to civil and womens rights, economic development, fair and humane immigration policies, racial justice, and bridging the gap between income and wealth inequality. Bernie

is currently serving his second term in the U.S. Senate representing the state of Vermont after winning with 71 percent of the vote.

Jim Webb is pushing for a more controlled foreign policy and a modified defense policy. He has also publicly criticized the Iraq War and President Obamas policies on the Middle East. The former senator from Virginias somewhat conservative views make him less attractive to Democrats.

Former Republican Rhode Island governor and senator Lincoln Chafee highlights the importance of national security and speaks about how invading Iraq was not a good idea and the aftermath of the war. Chafee is also the voice constantly reminding voters that his opponent Hillary Clinton voted in agreeance with President George W. Bush to invade Iraq. He has been quoted saying, I enjoy challenges, and today we have many facing America.

REPUBLICANSDonald Trump is another well-known aspiring president. From his controversial comments about Mexican immigrants to the fact that he has never held a position in office, many people are wondering how serious he is about this particular election after hinting at running in the past. Nonetheless, the successful, wealthy businessman commenced his campaign at the Trump Tower on June 16.

Jeb, an acronym for John Ellis Bush, Bush is the

son and brother of two former presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, respectively. The Texas native was governor of Florida from 1999 until 2007. Bush is known for his modest standpoint on immigration.

Ben Carson is a retired neurosurgeon who has never held elective office. He is known for his controversial stance on Obamacare and his speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast where he criticized President Obama. He is also known for his controversial views on womens rights and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The Yale University graduate is also married with three children.

This next contender is the son of previous presidential candidate Ron Paul. Even though Rand Paul does not actually identify with the Republican Party, his stances on justice, the security of future generations, and lowering taxes have secured him libertarian support. He has been a senator from Kentucky since 2011.

Before Gov. Chris Christie became governor of New Jersey, he was the U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey for seven years. The father of four is most known for the Bridgegate scandal that occurred in 2013. Unlike most politicians, Christie is focusing on sensitive issues such as education and entitlements. In earlier elections, he has won twice in two predominantly Democratic states.
