At this time I would like to apply the position of an architecture internship or graduate architect.

Having been educated both in China and Australia, I feel my educational background has given me an internationally diverse outlook to think and express differently. The 5 years of studying architecture in Melbourne University have shaped my abilities and strength regarding independence, cooperation, creation and confidence. In terms of the subject structure for both bachelor and master, it offers me comprehensive visions towards architecture studies; the subjects not only cover the designing aspects, but also focus on construction, architectural history/theory, practical issues in building industry and environmental concerns, which widely expand my knowledge and experience and I will always keep in mind that architecture study has multi-disciplinary approaches.

Throughout my study in Melbourne University, I put my best effort to complete tasks but the most important purpose was to push myself to break the restriction of tradition and present something new. Once during an interview with the faculty they asked me ‘what is my dream job?’ To which I answered ‘a job which can offer a new vision to change through designing’. What I found about the charm of designing is that there is no fixed or ‘the best’ answer and this is the reason why I keep building up my passion and love to design. At the end of my study, I feel great honor to be one of the school’s design exemplars, it approved my abilities and hard work and moreover it reminds me I should be confident with myself in my future career.

Apart from completing my university degrees, I spent time doing internship in designing firm in China and did volunteer jobs in Melbourne such as OPEN HOUSE and Robin Boyd Studio. In addition, I do street busking singing in my spare time. The whole experience is important to me in order to communicate with different people and culture, to some extent, it would also contribute to my design thinking.

I regard design as a technique to solve problems and a method to express myself. In my point of view, because the future built environment professionals require a multi-disciplinary understanding of matters, architecture will not only be about form, space, experience and details, it echoes every aspect from social, economical, cultural to scientific studies, interdisciplinary cooperation will be crucial and I wish to establish these approaches in the future.

The project portrays my imaginations and fantasy about a dream city. Through the entire design process I also approach to explorations about repetition, dimension and some urban design studies. It fuses the three major intensions – city, repetition and labyrinth to discuss a new and exciting future of spatial combination possibility in the form of an imaginary labyrinth in an urban scale. The city breaks the traditional image of our urban experience, the repetition of the express modules distorted the formula of a city. What I design is a highly associated and activated place with interfaces along many dimensions. It is a city you will meet a friend walking upside down or perpendicular to you. It is a city you won’t easily get lost but shares the atmosphere of finding and exploration. My thesis is to define a new urban philosophy which can evoke the lives of a city, and brings back the identity as a citizen.

From week 1 to 6, we were given the task to select an art piece from the Ian Potter museum and design a project reflecting our own choices. Julie Rrap’s installation remaking the world: artist dreaming inspiring me with the power of repetition, dimension and dream. My further experiments were seeking the different interpretations of repetition with architectural languages.

The preliminary project exercise was a source to expand my explorations in repetition, in some way, it opened up my mind to think and dream wider. Through Julie Rrap's installation and researches about the mentioned artists, I personally found myself deeply attached to the power of repetition. Even though the projects expand from a simple module, the outcome always communicate a much more complicated meaning. Spatially, the experiments about layering and dimensions somehow echo the idea of repetition, the following concepts and final thesis project have also reflected these ideas.

The CORE, which is the heart of the city can also be regarded as the center of a labyrinth, serves as a transport center to direct and transfer people to their destination efficiently. It connects to the 4 major express tunnels which is seem as the labyrinth path. Inside the core will be all the technical support departments and attached to each side of the core cube are the parks serve the recreational lives of the public.

Secondly, the express tunnel. The underlying principle for a labyrinth is not to confuse people but to guide people even if they think they are lost. My city design shares some similar thoughts with the urban planning ideas of modernism. I divided the city function in 4 parts: commercial + industrial, residential, infrastructural+educational and recreational. And each express tunnel belongs to a specific part. For example, all the residential apartments will be pluged into the residential express. When a citizen want to travel to his residence, he could take the transport device which leads him straight forward to his destination. The issue of such extreme zoning method will somehow isolate the city functions in a two dimensional basis. My project instead, goes a little bit wild, build upon the assumption that gravity will not be the restriction. All the express tunnels will turn to different orientation, crossing, overlaying and connecting each other with bridges. The purpose is to generate the illusive experience travelling through various dimensions. The communication between people, buildings and the city will be bonded more stable, solid, and complicated. Here, my interest and understanding of repetition contributes to the atmosphere of this dream city. I believe one of the critical factors which can emphasize the linkage between matters is complexity. And repetition is treated as one possible method.

The third components are the buildings which fit in the express portals.

The fourth is the afforestation system. It is constructed with the support of the nutrition supply pipe system which runs crossing the gaps within the city.

The Fragment is a mix-use medium scale urban and architecture design project which incorporates public and green spaces, retails, cafes and three towers with functions of offices, stores and entertainments. Four key objectives which drive my design process are EDGE, EMERGENCE, EXPLORATION and EVOLUTION and in order they relates to issues of landscape, form making, spatial experience and general vision and the agenda I set for the project is seeking opportunities to regenerate relationship between public realm and commercial district within urban context, in other words, an evolution of urban morphology.

The study seeks to understand the spatial structure and character of a metropolitan area, city, town or village by examining the patterns of its component parts and the process of its development. This can involve the analysis of physical structures at different scales as well as patterns of movement, land use, ownership or control and occupation. Typically, analysis of physical form focuses on street pattern, lot pattern and building pattern, sometimes referred to collectively as urban grain.

Master Studio C I City As World part 1

FISHERMANS BEND URBAN RENEWALUr 03

The Fishermans Bend urban renewal project seeks the opportunities to redevelope and improve the existing industrial site which occupies approximately 250 hectares of ground. According to Melbourne's future planning proposal, Fishermans Bend will aim to change its original function to a multi-functional commercial and community center in order to provide homes and workplaces to over 80,000 residences and 40,000 people by 2050. The draft master plan is trying to visualize the initial ideas and concepts about the new urban planing of the Wirraway Precinct. The new master plan can briefly introduce our design’s focus and approaches and methods to solve existing problem.

Currently the Fishermans Bend site is home to some large manufacturing business such as Holden and Boeing, as well as the location for a number of leading biotechnology research institutions. 85% of the Wirraway site is covered by industrial and business use. Heritage buildings do not make up much of the Wirraway Precinct, but they should be preserved as the memory of the place.

After reviewing urban ideas of Rem Koolhass, MVRDV and Toyo Ito, our group decides to use the theme ‘scale’ and ‘media and network’. We believe that large scale have the ability to contain more people and attract more people. However, we also need to consider about human scale and we will use network and media technologies to reduce the complexity when people standing in a site with large scale buildings by using information devices. ScaleIn order to attract more people and provide enough space for a large amount of population we create large scale sports center, shopping center, art center, community center and parking center. High density commercial high rise buildings will be located in the west to the center of the site close to the public transportat ion.

Open and green spaceSince the new site will serve not only the people within Fishermans Bend but also residents surround the site. Large green area and public open space will be critical to connect the neighborhoods. The existing green space is preserved, in addition, we create uplift roof garden on top of major large scale buildings such as the arts center, shopping center and sports center. Another park is located at the north west corner mainly serves people using the commercial buildings. A major public square is put under the main transport axis – the Plummer Street. The public square connects the tram and train station underground.

Landscape cityThe new design will be introduced more green spaces including existing green grounds, new park and bui ld ings wi th roof gardens. The uplift roof gardens separate different uses of spaces. With dif ferent levels of green area people can experience various views beyond the site to the CBD, Yarra River and the bay.

City gridFor the new urban design, we try to keep most of the street patterns also the trees along the streets since the original streets mainly go straight and turn at right angle. As a result, we use the traditional city grid as our major street pattern. It is easier for people to get direction and it is possible to save the existing plants.

Network and mediaIn order to construct the city network, new technolgy must be introduced, since the new urban design for the Wirraway Precinct is based on grid pattern, at ach intersection of the roads and streets an information system device will be placed and installed. This new device is trying to maximize the connection between the people and the place. They aim to provide a sense of place, convenience, sense of control of the site and safety.

The architectural design for the new Wirraway Precinct is a large scale building complex trying to form a new city center for the Fishermans Bend area. The linear form building serves as a multi-functional city complex providing functions including shopping, cinema, restaurants, pubs, fitness club, and super markets. The new city center aims to construct a recreational and business center with a large number of shops and a roof garden. The circulation and spatial experience are the main focuses of the building.

The concept is inspired by the very dense apartment buildings in Hongkong. Due to lack of lands and the need to provide enough residence for a huge population the apartment buidling seems to develop in a vertical direction. With such large scale buidling and dense apartment, the building facade looks so unique and different to apartments building in any other cities. Especially during the nights, when residents turn on the lights, the interior of their home will be exposed to the outside. The apartment building looks like collage. It’s not a building anymore, it becomes a map of different lives.

The new Wirraway City Center should be a landmark building which dominates Wirraway’s new visions and represents a strong connection with the urban design ideas - city as landscape. The area of the city center site is large and the design brief should also reflect a good response with the urban design themes - SCALE and NETWORK. Since the new Wirraway Precinct will act as a second CBD and relate the bay area the large scale shopping complex need show its effort emphisizing the relations with the bay. The new design is aiming for three major approaches:

1) spatial experience: the long linear form with curvy open courtyard is bringing people a new experience of space; 2) landscape in building: elevated gardens, green roof and plants will be introduced and as a significant decorative feature within the building; 3) circulation and access: since the building form is a long strip, enough entries should be provided to ensure a reasonable access into the building. In addition, elevated balcony and bridges provide walk paths through and surround the building also provide different views.

The project is designed as the magic performance and educational centre along the Yarra River north bank. Traditionally, magicians refuse to reveal the methods behind, which is extracted as the building design’s major concept – the play of hiding and showing. The final design is consisted of three critical components: firstly, the two-storey educational block cladding with reflective mirror material to make itself ‘invisible’; secondly, the three-storey box mainly serving the public with clear glass façade to show itself and lastly, the extruded columns of different sizes forming the second façade, mimicking the sense of mist gently touching the building and blend the building mass from exterior, creating a harmony fusion with the peaceful river side and adjacent buildings including the Good Shed, the Mission of SeaFarers Building and the apartment building and the seven-storey car park to the east side.

The mirage in dockland is trying to express its identity as a magic performance and educational center situate in this specific urban context by using optical illusion as the major concept. The solution to refine the form-making possibilities is to broadly set the performance optimization, which is also determined by the material selection. As a starting point, our group has determined that the Gateway design project should reflect our own discourse topic as a design approach, which could guide us to make decisions more specifically. The topics are: 1) using nature as a source of inspiration; 2) architecture design needs to consider the connection between structural rigidity and form finding process; 3) architecture is about making space that creates experience. To combine the three different concerns, we narrowed them to three words which were ORGANIC, STRUCTURAL and EFFECT. In other words, for the Gateway project, our group was trying to strengthen the architectural argument according to presenting organic form with structural rigidity and providing particular effect. After we decided our design direction we came to review the design brief. The approach to evaluate structural performance of different materials and applied the material properties on the form finding process. In addition, the discussions of materialization may influence back to the effects that the design can achieve.

Bachelor Studio FIRE I Sherlock Holmes Theatre

THEATRE INTERIOR DESIGNIn 09

The main theatre - William Desmond theatre is designed basing on the ‘The Adventure of the Speckled Band' as source of inspiration. The theatre design aims to reflect one of the important elements of the story - the 'snake' by applying a gold color metal cladding waved structure on both side of the wall, this large scale structure with the catching bright gold color contrasts the other dark grey wall panels as a metaphor of the truth of the mystery. The image applied on the wall will be a waving line sketch, the high density waving lines create an illusion of rising and falling and represents the meaning of hiding the truth. In addition, audiences' engagement with the theatre design is a significant aspect of the design, the glass strips with florence light tudes extrude from the theatre floor and continue to the ceiling. Each strip will lead to a specific space of the building e.g, ground floor foyer, boxoffice, etc., which provides entertainment to the audiences before the show begins.

In this semester, the senior tutors along with all the students will construct a full size 1:1 scale gatehouse building for 12 weeks. The example we are looking at is the hanging lotus gatehouse from the Summer Palace in Beijing. Over 30 students choosing the subject are divided into three workshop to do carpentry week by week. All the carpentry work will be produced and presented by the students with the help of senior tutor Hamish Hill and Ross Berryman. Most of the timber work will be done by hand tool in order to understand the production of traditional Chinese architecture.

I am the sort of the people who feel quite nervous with strangers so I always feel very embarrased when people standing or sitting right next to me within a relatively short distance. However, it is easy to observe that human beings have invisible comfort zone when they interact with others especially in a certain context or space. The object examines the expansion/representation of our body part – the feelings, especially the emotion of anxiety. The wearable skin interprets the multiplication of our feelings literally but the intension is tend to be abstract. The purpose of this full scale wearable skin is to indicate that our emotions or feelings somehow influence how we locate ourselves in a certain space. The context I select isa spot in my everyday life, which is the lift. The lift is a very enclosed and compacted space and people are always trying fit themselves comfortably in such small space and the 'skin' can represent the factors which determine our location.

The use of kaleidoscope is to record the illusion of my mind when I spent my time in the cafe. The floor plan is pretty much a square with the coffee making area located in the center. A fews benches were put around the edge of the cafe so the circulation of customers would flow freely. When I sitting on one of the benches, it felt like I was watching a coffee making show and since the space is quite small I could hear the sounds of coffee making process very clearly. With the warm morning sunlight the space became more comfortable to stay.

Using mirror reflections to create the illusion to provide various of perspectives while it still keep a clear image of the performance from some large mirrors. The purpose is to provide a attraction which can draw people's attention to the performers and to think out the meaning behind the show.

Junhong Huang was a member of a studio that I taught at the Melbourne School of Design, Melbourne University, second semester 2014.

The studio was entitled “The Selfie Façade” and was investigating new technologies to generate façade treatments for mixed use tall buildings.

Junhong was a great contributor to the studio, and prepared a number of thoughtful yet imaginative design ideas. He was not afraid to wrestle with ideas and try new approaches.
