1 HALES NEVER FAILS 86* (43) Alex Hales’ blistering 86 in Nottinghamshire Outlaws’ eight-wicket win over Birmingham Bears was a worthy headline act on the opening night of NatWest T20 Blast 2015. Smashed o just 43 balls, Hales’ 86* included eight sixes, six of them in successive balls. Hales’ extraordinary six-ball blitz mostly consisted of leg-side slop-sweeps hammered over the mid-wicket boundary, but the pick of his maximums was surely the first one – a full-blooded drive straight down the ground. 2 WHAM, BAM, THANK YOU GLAM 91 (47) Spectacularly caught by Gareth Batty at mid-on before he had got going, Colin Ingram’s stay at the crease against Surrey looked to be brief. Fortunately for the South African, it was a no ball and he lived to fight another day. He went on to make Surrey pay, and then some, by plundering 91 o 47 balls as Glamorgan amassed 240-3. Ingram seemed so unstoppable, it was surprising to see him swing wildly and miss a straight ball from Wahab Riaz which wrecked his stumps. 3 DIVINE ABBOTT 5-14 Kyle Abbott took a career-best 5-14 to rip the heart out of Sussex and guide Middlesex to a 42-run win. He bowled opener Chris Nash in the third over, then returned in the 17th over to dismiss Luke Wright and Chris Jordan with consecutive balls. The South African Test seamer then took another two wickets in two balls – Stefan Piolet and Tymal Mills – in his last over to finish his spell, and the match, in style. 4 THE FISHER KING 5-22 17-year-old Matthew Fisher took 5-22 in his first NatWest T20 Blast appearance to set up a comfortable seven-wicket win for Yorkshire Vikings. Derbyshire Falcons were on 66-1 after eight overs and making serene progress when Fisher sparked a collapse which saw five wickets fall in consecutive overs. He got Chesney Hughes for 27 with his second ball, before removing Shiv Thakor lbw. The Falcons rallied to 108-6 before Fisher returned, taking a sharp return catch to dismiss Alex Hughes, getting Tom Poynton caught behind and then removing Ben Cotton to finish the job. 5 NORTHEAST BEYOND THE GAYLE 151 (62) 114 (58) Chris Gayle hit an astonishing 151 o 62 balls for Somerset against Kent, but somehow ended up on the losing side. That was largely down to Kent’s Sam Northeast, who carved up the Somerset bowling attack at Taunton during an exceptional 114 in his side’s 227-7. Gayle lost partners throughout his scarcely-believable knock, which included 15 sixes – one of which went into the nearby River Tone, but still carried his team to within four runs of victory. It was his 15th T20 ton! MASTERS Some of the best bits from this year’s NatWest T20 Blast. BLAST MATCH GUIDE | 21 DURHAM-T20-Programme2.indd 21 02/06/2015 15:22
