(TE55 ) What is the land like in the Southwest? (TE55) Why couldnt the Southwest Indians use wood to build their homes? (TE 56) What larger group are the Hopis part of? (TE 56) Why do the Hopi try to keep their land healthy? (TE 56) What kinds of work do the modern-day Hopi do?

Discuss with your group-Critical Thinking? Why did the Southwest Indians grow cropsinstead of relying on hunting and gathering? Lack of water is part of life in the

Southwest even today. The Southwest Indians showed how to adopt to this dry

    climate.

CLOSURE: Discuss the five statements on Review/Assess (TE 57) Encourage students tobe involved in the lesson and to ask about the things they do not understand,

    J. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

To measure understanding I would have the students write a paragraph describing the

    way the Southwest used irrigation.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lessonStudents will make a list of all the ways the Hopi used water. During the week students

will write down the ways they use water at home. Students will then make a Venn

    Diagram in class to share.

    K. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think teaching the students the students the history of the Hopi Indian will be the easy

    part of this lesson.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part will be to teach the students reasons why the Hopi Indians

never gave up on a land with very little resources.

    3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

I think that the Extend Lesson 3 on page 58 would be a great activity. The people

featured in Extend Lesson 3 pass on their culture and share their heritage through theirknowledge, beliefs, values, and traditions. Cultural learning begins at birth and

continues through life. They will use this information about one of the Southwest Indians

and write a couple sentences to summarize that persons biography.

    3. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For the students who are having a difficult time with the concepts I will work with them

in a small group at my back table and reteach by helping them complete their

    assessments.

    4. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I would like to change the lesson by having students chunk the lesson into parts and let

them share as a group what they learned.

    5. What of this lesson, if any, might you need to change?I might have the students gather pictures and information at home to share in class the

    next day.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was working in the Extend the lesson and the time we have to

    teach the lesson.
