Call students attention to the picture on pg. 137 that shows Pilgrims writing thecompact while they were on the Mayflower. It was the first written plan for

governments in North America. Discuss how religion plays a role in many peoples lives. Explain the importance of

religion to many of the first English settlers.

Introduce vocabulary (pilgrim, compact, cape) As a class, read pg. 136-139 together, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the

    margins of TE (pg. 137,138)

Students should take notes and record information on their Study Guide while we read;they can continue working on their Study Guide when we complete reading the

    selection.

Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding. (TE 137) What did the Pilgrims agree to on the Mayflower Compact? (TE137) What difficulty did the Pilgrims face after they landed at Plymouth? (TE 138) How did Squanto help the Pilgrims after their first winter? (TE138) Did the Puritans want to separate from the Church of England? Why

    or why not?

(TE 138) What helped make the Puritans more successful than theJamestown colonists?

Discuss with your group-Critical Thinking? Predict What might have happened if thePuritans had not been so well prepared for starting settlements in North America.

CLOSURE: Discuss the statements on Review/Assess (TE 139)

    J. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

Have students write a short essay telling what might have happened to the Pilgrims if

    Squanto had not helped them.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.

I will have the students discuss the Lesson Review on page 139 while I walk around andlisten to their answers.

    K. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part of this lesson to teach will be reading and discussing the

Pilgrims and their arrival in America.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part will be to teach them about how Squanto was able to

teach the Pilgrims so much about farming, hunting and fishing. Also how he spoke

English and was able to introduce the Pilgrims to Massasoit the leader of the

Wampang Indians. After meeting William Bradford, the governor of Plymouth met

Massasoit they agreed to live together peacefully.

    3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?I would extend this lesson by using the Extend lesson 3 on pages 140-143. This is an

excellent fictional narrative told from the point of view as a Pilgrim Boy.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For the students who are having a difficult time with the concepts, we will work in a

small group at my back table and reread the lesson.5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

I would probably read The First Thanksgiving, by Jean Craighead George to the

students and have the write a summary and then illustrate their writing.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of the lesson was making sure the students understood the

    importance of the Native Americans.
