Olympic Flag Arrival of the flag four years ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The Olympic flag that was handed over to Tokyo during the closing ceremony of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on August 24. As members of the arrival ceremony looked on, Governor Yuriko Koike of Tokyo stepped off the airplane and onto the stairs, waving the Olympic flag.

Society Annual number of overseas visitors to Japan reaches 11.46 million and approaches a record 20 million.

A total of approximately 11.46 million overseas visitors entered Japan during the first half of this year, from January to June, the Ministry of Justice Immigration Bureau announced on September 26 (see graph). It was the largest number ever since 1950, when statistics collection began, and the first time it surpassed 10 million in the first half of the year. Of the total number of visitors, roughly 10.37 million were first-time visitors to Japan, with the majority of these visiting for sightseeing purposes. In terms of countries and regions, the largest numbers were from China, South Korea, and Taiwan, in that order, accounting for 60% of the total.

The annual number of overseas visitors to Japan reached a record of approximately 19.69 million last year. This year, it is increasing at a rate that would top the 20 million mark for the first time. The government is aiming to attract 40 million foreign visitors to Japan in 2020.

Region The once-in-twenty-year “Shikinen Zotai” renovation is completed at Kasugataisha Shrine in Nara.

The “Shikinen Zotai” large-scale renovation of the main shrine at Kasugataisha Shrine in Nara City that is carried out every two decades has been completed. The newly renovated shrine was opened to the media on October 3.

The main shrine was initially built in 1863, toward the end of the Edo period. It is composed of four shrines that are each 1.9 meters wide, 2.5 meters deep, and 5.7 meters high, and have one-bay sanctuaries typical of the Kasuga style of shrines. It exhibits a unique structure in which a different god is worshipped at each of the four shrines. Begun last September, the recent renovation has restored the shrine to its original beautiful appearance by replacing its roof, reapplying its vermillion, and repainting its murals.

Production and shipment of rooster figurines associated with next year’s Chinese zodiac sign has peaked at Chugai Toen, a manufacturer of ceramic crafts in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, which is an area known for ceramicware. The workshop is filled with rooster figurines displaying adorable designs, such as ones featuring a chick as a symbol of prosperity for the family line.

Since ancient times, the rooster, which heralds the dawn, has been said to bring good fortune. Chugai Toen has created 76 original designs for next year, but the number surpasses 100 when including designs commissioned by other companies. The peak shipment period is expected to continue until around mid-December. The company wishes everyone “a fruitful and prosperous year.”

At Nabana no Sato, a tourist attraction in Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture, a seasonal illumination event was kicked off with a lighting ceremony on the night of October 14. “Earth” was the theme of this winter’s event. Lamps covering a stage approximately 30 meters high and 155 meters wide changed their colors in sequence to project images such as the Antarctic Ocean and terraced paddy fields in Japan, taking spectators on a trip around the world in six minutes. The event will continue until May 7 of next year.

Preventing the Disappearance of Technical Intern Trainees

The technical intern training program is operated with

the objective of transferring Japan’s technologies, skills, and knowledge to adult workers from developing countries and contributing to human resource development and social and economic growth in those countries. With this objective in mind, it is highly unfortunate that there have been occasional cases of technical intern trainees disappearing during training. Such disappearances often lead to illegal employment, illegal overstay, and other offenses that violate the Immigration Control Act. According to the National Policy Agency, 693 former technical intern trainees were arrested for overstaying their visas during 2015 alone.

Never be enticed by SNS and other online solicitations that claim you will be able to earn much more money elsewhere, as such solicitations are highly likely to be a trap set by a criminal organization. If you fall prey to such claims and quit the technical intern training program, you may find yourself on the path to becoming a criminal. There have actually been cases where technical intern trainees have disappeared and become involved in serious offenses such as theft, burglary, and drug trafficking.

Also note that disappearing from the technical intern training program would not only mar your own career but cause undue worry and trouble to many people around you, including your family and friends, colleagues, and your dispatching, supervising, and employing organizations. Furthermore, if a large number of technical intern trainees disappear from the employing or supervising organization to which you belong, the organization will be questioned as to its responsibility, and it may be barred from receiving any more technical intern trainees under relevant laws and regulations. Therefore, you should not only beware of solicitations from SNS and other online sources, but also avoid contact with illegal workers and overstayers, and look out for your own circle of trainees to prevent disappearances. It is also important for you to build and maintain trust with your work colleagues so that you have others in whom to confide.

About the Technical Intern

Trainee Handbook

All technical intern trainees receive a booklet titled “Technical Intern Trainee Handbook” from the Ministry of Justice Immigration Bureau upon entering Japan. It is offered in six languages—Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, and English—accompanied by Japanese translations, and contains important information for technical intern trainees in Japan. This information ranges from tips on how to approach your role as a technical intern trainee to detailed information on Japanese laws and regulations pertaining to technical intern trainees, the basics of health and safety management, and a list of government consultation centers.

One handbook per person is available free of charge. Please do not lose it, as you may not receive another copy.

Pancakes with Apple Jam

[Apple jam ingredients] 2 apples 2 – 3 Tbsp. sugar 1 Tbsp. water 1 Tbsp. lemon juice [How to make apple jam] １．Cut the apples into 8 wedges, remove the cores, peel

the skin off, and cut each wedge into thin slices. Place the sliced apples in a pot, add the sugar, water and lemon juice, and mix the ingredients together.

２．Cover the pot with a lid and put it over medium heat. When the ingredients come to a boil and steam escapes from under the lid, turn the heat down low and let the pot simmer for 7 – 8 minutes until the apples soften. Turn off the heat and let the jam cool.

[Pancake ingredients (for 4 pancakes 12 cm in diameter)]120 g wheat flour 2 tsp. baking powder* 1 egg 150 mL milk 2 Tbsp. honey (or sugar) 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil *Baking powder may be substituted with baking soda (1 tsp.).

[How to make pancakes] １．Combine and sift the wheat flour and baking powder.２．Break the egg into a bowl and beat it. Add the milk,

honey, and vegetable oil in that order, and mix well with a whisk.

Add 1, and mix roughly with a wooden spatula. ３．Heat a frying pan over medium heat, and pour a

small amount of vegetable oil (not included in the ingredients) into it. Ladle one serving of pancake batter into the pan and spread it out to a diameter of about 12 centimeters. Grill for 3 – 4 minutes. Flip it over when holes start to form in the surface, and grill for another 2 – 3 minutes on the other side until it is cooked through.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Try the season’s apples!

Taking care of your health on a daily basis is especially important around this time of year, when the north wind becomes stronger and severe cold sets in. Let’s learn a bit more about apples, a seasonal food said to be good for your health.

There are various theories about the origins of apples, but they are said to have originally been produced in Central Asia. As they can be grown even in cold climates, they have been consumed around the world since ancient times. Over the course of this history, sayings expressing the health benefits of apples such as “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” have emerged and been passed down to this day. Nutritionally, apples contain pectin, said to regulate the function of the intestines, and citric acid, said to be effective in relieving fatigue. People in olden days may have known about the functions of such nutrients from experience.

A wide variety of apples are grown in Japan, including “Fuji” and “Orin.” It may be interesting to compare the different varieties if you have the chance. Of course apples taste delicious raw, but we also recommend using them to make jam. Try your hand at making homemade apple jam, which goes perfectly with the homemade pancake recipe we introduced above.

This newsletter was first issued in 1993 under the title of Trainees’ Mate and published in newspaper format. Today, it is available in booklet and online versions, with the online version mainly containing re-edited articles from previous issues of the booklet version.
