JAMSTEC E-Library of Deep Sea Images Biological Information System for Marine Life
JAMSTEC Date Research Center
We have been opened deep-sea videos to the public via Internet, for the promotion of the utilization. The system named as the JAMSTEC E-Library of Deep-sea Images (J-EDI) provides various search options using annotation data.
Since 2011
Videos are firstly recorded on the board of research vessels/submersibles on a tape or various media and then transferred to DrC. Then, backup and encoding for preventing data loss and degradation are performed. The encoded videos are stored in a mass storage in the Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC) of JAMSTEC After that, the videos are separated into several clips. Each clip is annotated and opened to public via Internet.
Since 2010, high-definition (HD) cameras replacing standard-definition (SD) cameras become common as the equipment of JAMSTEC’s submersibles. Following increased file sizes of videos taken by HD cameras, medium has been changed from tapes to hard disk drives, and a backup system using LTO5/LTFS was employed

We employed HD video backup system using LTO5/LTFS used for professional broadcasting systems and others. Then we are figuring out some way (e.g. writing in LTO5, Check system et al) to raise usability of a worker. We opened deep-sea videos to the public via “JAMSTEC E-Library of Deep Sea Images(J-EDI)” for the promotion of the utilization. Additionally, we should improve the accuracy and resolution of annotation information as well as saving the time and labor in the annotation procedures. One possible solution may be an automatic recognition of objects in videos, and investigations of available technics/methodologies and try-out of emerging systems have been conducted. A seamless annotation work-flow from on board to data systems is also under consideration but new systems/tools will be needed to facilitate data and information transfer from ships to our data center.
In Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), the deep-sea videos has been taken by submersibles since 1982. Up to now, the deep-sea videos reached approximately 24,700 tapes based on more than 4,000 dives. These videos have been opened to the public via the internet since 2002. The deep-sea videos are important to assess temporal variations deep-sea environments and to understand the diversity of deep-sea organisms and their ecology. Moreover, progresses of video technique enable advanced analyses of the videos, extending the utility of deep-sea videos aim deep-sea sciences and related field.
JAMSTEC's Data Research Center for Marine-Earth Sciences (DrC) is responsible to the preservation, quality control and online publication of videos taken during JAMSTEC researches. A large amount of videos should be managed efficiently and correctly, and the search ability and accessibility on our online database are crucial for further use of videos. In this presentation, we briefly introduce the work-flow in the preservation/QC procedure of deep-sea videos and the user interface of our new video database.
What is the LTO5 ? LTO : Linear Tape-Open 5 generation Record Volume : 1.5 TB (non compression)
Video backup do cost a lot of money. But LTO are able to backup low cost.
What is the LTFS ? LTFS : Linear Tape File System LTFS is a kind of the File System. We can use a LTO5 Tape looks like a USB drive on each OS.
