One possible solution may be an automatic recognition of objects in videos, and investigations of available technics/methodologies and try-out of emerging systems have been conducted. A seamless annotation work-flow from on board to data systems is also under consideration but new systems/tools will be needed to facilitate data and information transfer from ships to our data center. In Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), the deep-sea videos has been taken by submersibles since 1982. Up to now, the deep-sea videos reached approximately 24,700 tapes based on more than 4,000 dives. These videos have been opened to the public via the internet since 2002. JAMSTEC E-Library of Deep Sea Images Biological Information System for Marine Life

JAMSTEC Date Research Center

We have been opened deep-sea videos to the public via Internet, for the promotion of the utilization. The system named as the JAMSTEC E-Library of Deep-sea Images (J-EDI) provides various search options using annotation data.

Since 2011

Videos are firstly recorded on the board of research vessels/submersibles on a tape or various media and then transferred to DrC. Then, backup and encoding for preventing data loss and degradation are performed. The encoded videos are stored in a mass storage in the Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC) of JAMSTEC After that, the videos are separated into several clips. Each clip is annotated and opened to public via Internet.

Following increased file sizes of videos taken by HD cameras, medium has been changed from tapes to hard disk drives, and a backup system using LTO5/LTFS was employed
