Eleven Anuvakas are explained

As mentioned earlier Sri Rudram is divided in to eleven sections called anuvakas. In the first

anuvaka consisting of eleven sukthaas , Rudra is requested by the devotee to turn his fierce

exterior and not use his weapons on his devotees. e is also requested to annihilate the sinscommitted by his devotees. This anuvaka is chanted for all round development of the

community as well as the well-being of the chanter. It also is supposed to provide a

protective shield against diseases, devils, monsters and so on.

In the second anuvaka consisting of two sukthaas the Rudra is part of nature in all its glory as plants and medicinal herbs. e is requested to untie the bonds of the day!to!day life. This ischanted for destruction of enemies, possession of wealth, getting of kingdom and so on .

"he third anuvaka consisting of two sukthaas describe Rudra as a thief. e might have been

presumed to be the stealer of ignorance from us. This anuvaka is chanted to cure diseases.

In the fourth anuvaka again consisting of two sukthaas, Rudra is the common man with his

deficiencies, angularities and described as the creator and worker of all kinds. This anuvaka issupposed to cure diseases like tuberculosis, leprosy, etc.

In the fifth Anuvaka Rudra#s consisting of two sukthaas , several aspects of his personalityespecially as $od responsible for creation, preservation and destruction is described. This is

chanted to get rid of ignorance and aya, for victory against enemies, for begetting of a

son, for avoidance of problems during pregnancy and for expansion of wealth.

In the sixth anuvaka consisting of two sukthaas. Rudra is identified with changes of his

personality over eons of time and the roles he has played in different ages. e is described as thesource of the different worlds, Shrutis %&edas' and its essence in &edanta. This is chanted for

the same aim stated in the fifth anuvaka.

In the seventh anuvaka again consisting of two sukthaas his all pervading presence in nature inall its fury and ma(esty is described. This anuvaka is chanted for the increase of intelligence,wealth, health and longevity.

In the eighth anuvaka, Rudra is described as e who illumines other $ods and confers powers on

them. It is told that when you do not have time to chant the !udra fully at least this eighth

anuvaka should be chanted. "he )anchakshari mantra vi*. +ama Shivaaya- occurs for the

first time in &edas in this anuvaka. This anuvaka is chanted for the destruction of enemiesand re -possession of one"s assets.

In the ninth anuvaka, which consists of two sukthaas, the unfancied and hard to live places where

Rudra lives is listed out. In essence it means he is all pervasive. This anuvaka is chanted forobtaining wealth, a good wife, good #ob, and the blessings of a son who will be devoted to

$ord %hiva.

In the tenth anuvaka Rudra is again requested not to show his furious fear giving form and

appear before the devotee in a peaceful calm form. "he mantras unlike the ones till ninth

anuvaka do not end in ama after every description. This anuvaka is chanted for &possession

of wealth, cure of diseases, removal of fear, getting rid of the enmity of powerful people,

absence of fear from all living beings, having the vision of 'hairava (%hiva in his most

fearful aspect), absence from dangers and fears, blessings and the absolution of sins*.

In the eleventh anuvaka consisting of eleven sukthaas, Rudra#s army called $anaas is praised andthey, wherever they exist, are beseeched to protect the devotees of Rudra. This anuvaka ischanted for ac+uiring knowledge of past, present and future. "his anuvaka is followed by six

stotras of Rudra.

"he hamakam, as pointed out earlier lists out the blessings that can be got by prayer to Rudra.

"he reading or chanting of Rudra is said to be complete only when chamakam also is chanted.

Shivaa sharavyaa yaa thava thaya no rudhra mrudaya.

8ith that arrow of thine, which is holy,

8ith that bow of thine, which is begetter of good,

8ith that quiver of thine, which is sweet.

2.9 6aa the shivaa thanu raghoraa papakasini,

"haya nasthanuva shantha maya gireesam thaabhi chakashihi.

/h Rudra, who showers happiness on us from the 0ount,8ith your aspect which is peaceful,

8hich is giver of good always,

And that, which is bereft of sin,

And which is the road to salvation,

And which takes us to taller heights,

Reveal to us the principle of the soul.

And who gives us solace sitting on the mount,

)eaceful and do not give trouble to people and the world.

Shivena vachasaa twaa gireesaacchha vadaamasi,

8e praise and sing about you so that we attain you,

/h, $od who lives on the top of the mountains,

1e pleased to protect our relations and cows,

$rant them all, a disease free life,

And make them live with love towards each other,

2.< Adhyavoo chadhadhi vakthaa pradhamo daiwyo bhishak,

Ahimscha sarvaan (ambayanth sarvaschaa yathu dhaanya.

e who is first among everything,

e who is $odliness in $ods,

e who is the doctor curing the sins,

e who praises good deeds of devotees,

=orgetting the ills done by them,

0ay he kill all animals and asuras that trouble us,

And bless us all.

2.> Aasau yasthamro aruna utha bhaabroo sumangala,

6eh chemam rudra abhitho dikshu,

Sritha Sahastraso avaishaam heda eemahe.

e is red in colour,

e is more red in colour,e is golden,

e gives rise to good things,

e is the Rudhra, who is the sun,

And so we bow before the thousands of Rudhras,

8ho are spread in all directions,

And request them to cool themselves down.

2.? Asou yo avasarpathi neela greevo vilohitha,

3thainam gopaa adrusannath drushan udhaharya,

3thainam viswaa bhoothani sa drushto mrudayathi na.

e who has the blue neck,

Is the one who rises as the copper colured sun.

@ven lowly cowherds see this Rudhra who comes as sun,

@ven the maids who carry water from rivers see him thus,

And even all the animals of the world see him thus.

7et this Rudra who is seen in the form of sun,

$rant us all happiness.

2. amo asthu neela greevaya sahasrakshaya meedushe,

Adho ye asya sathvannoham thebhyo karannama.

"o the $od who has thousands of eyes,

"o the $od who grants us all boons,

And also my salutations,

"o his devotees who are his servants.

2.22 Avathasys dhanusthvam sahasraksha sathe shudhe,

iseerya salyanaam mukha shivo na sumana bhava.

/h $od with thousand eyes,

/h $od with hundreds of bows,

)lease break the sharp ends of arrows thine,

)lease slacken the string of your bow,

And become $od who does us good,And $od who has a calm mind.

Anesannasyeshwa aabhurasya nishamgadhi.

7et your bow loosen its string,

7et your quiver become empty,

7et your arrows loose the power to hurt,

7et your sword be always in your scabbard.

e who is greatest among those who fulfill wishes of devotees,

8ith those weapons that you have and the bow in your hand.

"ripuranthakayaa trikagni kalaaya kalagni rudhraaya neela kantaaya,

0rutyun(ayaaya sarveshwaraaya sadashivaaya sriman maha devaaya nama.

Salutations to you $od,

8ho is the lord of the universe,

8ho is the greatest among $ods,

8ho has three eyes,

8ho destroyed three cities,

8ho is the master of the three fires,

8ho is the Rudra who burns the world,

8ho has a blue neck,

8ho won over the $od of death,

8ho is 7ord of every thing,

"o him who is red coloured,

"o him who is protector of every thing,

And to him who is the lord of all trees.

5.5.5 0anthrinee vani(aya kakshanaam pathaye namo nama


"o him who is the minister,

"o him who is the merchant,

And to him who is the lord of bushes and thickets.

5.5.9 1huvanthaye varivaskruthaa oushadinaam pathaye namo nama.


"o him who is the creator of the world,

"o him who is kind to his devotees,

And to him who is the lord of all plants.

5.5.: 3chai goshaaya akranthayathe patheenam pathaye namo nama.


"o him who shouts loudly,

"o him who makes one cry,

And to him who is the leader of foot soldiers.

5.5.; Cruthsna vheethya dhavathe sathvanaam pathaye namo nama.

"o him who rushes to save his devotees,

And to him who is the lord of good people.

THIRD ANUVAKA

9.2.2 ama sahamanaaya nivyadheen aavyadheenaam pathay namo nama


"o him who stifles his enemies,

"o him who beats his enemies,

And to him who is the leader of those who beat their enemies.

9.2.5 Cukubhaya nishangine sthenaanam pathaye namo nama.


"o him who is the best,

"o him who holds the sword,

And to him who is the leader of the thieves.

9.2.9 ishngina ishudhimathe thaskaraanam pathaye namo nama.


"o him who holds bows ready to shoot,

"o him who has the quiver,

And to him who is the leader of the dacoits.

9.2.: &anchathe pari vanchathe sthayoonam pathaye namo nama


"o him who cheats,

"o him who is the greatest cheat,

And to him who is leader of those who steal by cheating.

9.2.; icherave paricharaayaaranyanam pathaye namo nama


"o him who goes inside to steal,

"o him who goes outside to steal,

And to him who is the leader of thieves who steal in the forest.

"o him who prowls in the night to steal,

And to him who is the leader of those who murder and steal.

"o him who lives in the forests,

And to him who is the leader of those who steal in houses and fields.

9.5.2 Ishumadbhyo dhanvaa vibhyascha bho namo nama


"o him who holds the arrows.

And to him who holds the bows.

9.5.5 Aathanvanebhya prathi dhanebhyscha namo nama


"o him who ties the string to the bow,

And to him who places the arrow on the string.

9.5.9 Ayaaschadbhyo visru(adbhyacha vo namo nama


"o him who draws the string,

And to him who sends the arrows

@eshaam purushaanam esham pasunaam maa

bhermaro mo eshaam kincha namamath

/h $od who punishes the sinners in hell,

/h $od, who gives food to devotees,

/h $od, who is the form of light,

/h $od who has a black neck and red body,

)lease do not give fear to these beings,

)lease do not give death to these beings,And please do not make any of these beings sick.

Shivaa rudrasya besha(i taya no mruda (eevase

/h, Rudhra, $od of the world,

"hat medicine which cures the pain of birth and rebirth,

"hat medicine which mixes with you and makes all happy,

Is your holy form that is one with thine consort Shakthi,

And please bless us all with that form,"o make us live as we ought to live.

)rabharaamahe mathim,

6adhaa na sama sad dwipadhe chatushpadhe viswam pushtam graame Asmin aathuram.

/h Rudra, $od of the world,

8ho wears dried tuft of hair,

8ho is the sage who meditates,

And who kills his enemies,

0ake mine wavering thought fixed on thee,

So that good will befall on us people and our cows,

And all beings would grow healthy without fail,

And are never ever get diseased.

0aa no vadhee pitharam motha maatharam priyaa maa

ever give trouble to our elders.

ever give trouble to our children,

ever give trouble to our lads,

ever give trouble to our children in the womb,

ever give trouble to our fathers, ever give trouble to our mothers,

And never give to trouble our body, which is dear to us.

0aa no asweshu reerisha. &eeranmaa no rudra

ever cause sorrow to our children and sons,

ever diminish our span of life,

ever cause sorrow to our cows, ever cause sorrow to our horses,

And do not destroy in anger our efficient servants,

And we would come with holy offerings and salute you.

/f that Rudra who stays in the lotus of our heart,

/f that Rudra who is powerful in killing of enemies,

/f that Rudra who is as fearful as a lion,

And of that Rudra who is full of fame.And /h Rudra, who is being praised,

$ive immortal pleasures to this mortal body,

And let your chief soldiers,

Cill our enemies.

Ava sthiraa madavadbhayasthanushva meedvasthokaaya

"hanayaya mrudaya.

7et the weapon of Rudra move away from us,

And the fearful thought of Rudra,

And which is capable of destroying sinners,

Also move away from us.

7ittle soft at us, who praise,

And salute thee by fire sacrifices,

And please give pleasure to our sons and their sons.

)arame vruksha aayudham nidhaaya kruthim vasaan

Aachara pinaaka bibradhaagahi.

/h Rudra who is the greatest among those who grant wishes,

/h Rudra who has a pleasant mien,

)lease become one who does good to us,

And become one with a good mind.

)lease keep thine weapons on the trees,

And come to us wearing the hide of tiger.

)lease bring along thine bow pinaaka,

As an ornament.

2B.22 &ikiridha vilohitha namasthe asthu bhagava,

6aasthe sahasram hothayo anya mannibhavanthu tha.

/h Rudra who throws riches at us,

And oh Rudra who is red coloured,7et our salutations be with you.

7et your thousands of weapons,

4estroy our enemies who are different from us.

2B.25 Sahasrani sahasradhaa baahu hosthava hethaya

"haasameesano bhagava parachinaa mukhaa krudhi.

/h Rudra in your hands are weapons,

In thousands and of thousand types.

/h $od who is all powerful,0ake their sharp ends not attack us.

"o order your soldiers who are in thousands,

"o keep their thousands of weapons,

8hich are of thousand kinds,

"housand miles away from us.

22.5 Asmin mahatyarnave anthareekshe bhavaa adhi.

In this vast sea of ether,

8hichever Rudra#s soldiers do exist,

22.9 eelagreeva sithi kkantaa sarvaa adha kshama charaa

And those soldiers, who do exist,

8hose half side of neck is blue,

And the other half is white.

And live under the earth in )aathaalaD.

8ho take food and drink from vessels

8ho protect people who walk in the path,

And also protect those people taking all other paths,

And who take the form of those who save by giving food,

And who fight with enemies

8ho carry sharp weapons,

And also those who carry swords,

And also those who travel protecting sacred waters.

6a eetha bandascha bhooyaamscha diso rudraa vithasthire

22.2B "eshaam sahasra yo(ane avadhanvaani thanyasi.

8e request all these your soldiers,

And also all those others wherever they are,

Spread in different directions,

"o keep their bows,

"housands miles away,

After removing the string.

22.22 amo rudrebhyo ye prithvyaam ye anthareekshe,

6e divi yesham annam vatho varshmishadha sthebhyo dasa,

)raceerdasa dakshina dasa pradeecheer daso udhiceer daso urdhwaa,

Sthebhyo namasthe no mrudayanthu the yam dwishmo,

0y salutations to all those soldiers of Rudra,

8ho are in the sky,

8ho are in the worlds above,

And to those whom air and food,
