September 19th, 2018 Dear friends, our letter from Berlin # 6 was already published on July 8th in German. The letter is based on the lyrics of the well known folksong “Bolle reiste jüngst zu Pfingsten” (Bolle made a trip on Whitsun), composed in Berlin dialect. More information on this song can be found on Wikipedia (En). It is not really possible to translate the text. We visited the places of Bolle’s trip to Pankow and to Schönholzer Heide and tried to take photos, illustrating the lyrics from the mid of the 19th century with pictures from today.

Today the crowd (Jewühl) at Hackescher Markt was negligible compared with the number of people on the fan fest near Brandenburg Gate during Soccer World Cup. Nowadays you travel to Pankow with the Metro, instead of using the Kremser. On your way you will pass the historic brewery Willner at Berliner Straße.

Bolle reiste jüngst zu Pfingsten, nach Pankow war sein Ziel.

Da verlor er seinen Jüngsten janz plötzlich im Jewühl. 'ne volle halbe Stunde

hat er nach ihm jespürt. Aber dennoch hat sich Bolle

janz köstlich amüsiert.

Why is there not a single guest in all those restaurants at Pankow on a Sunday? Is it due to the World Cup taking place? But nevertheless it is not really quiet at Pankow. Once every four minutes one of the airplanes approaching Tegel Airport flies across the old parish church.

On your way to Schönholzer Heide you need to walk through the park of the old baroque palace Schönhausen from the 17th century.

In Pankow gabs kein Essen, in Pankow gabs kein Bier,

war alles aufjefressen von fremden Gästen hier. Nich mal ne Butterstulle hat man ihm reserviert!

Aber dennoch hat sich Bolle janz köstlich amüsiert.



The most recent great massacre at Schönholzer Heide was caused by the two heavy storms in 2017. Numerous trees were knocked over. The text describing Bolle’s behavior does not sound strange in our days. Our media frequently report from battles between gangs and clans, where it is quite normal that knives play an important role, so that the police needs to take care of them and make sure, that the civilian population does not have to fear that they could be victims of attacks.

Look at this massacre in the forest! It seems to be hard not to get blurred photos.

und Bolle, gar nicht feige, war feste mang dabei,

hat's Messer rausgezogen, und fünfe massakriert,

aber dennoch hat sich Bolle janz köstlich amüsiert.
