Kota Tinggi, Tues. - Many areas in the low-lying town of Kota Tinggi and the nearby villagers were flooded after five hours of continuous rain yesterday morning. The water level rose to three metres high at 1.00 pm.
As most roads to and out of the town were under water, traffic came to a standstill. Motorists were caught in a three-hour traffic jam. Many left their cars on the roads as it was impossible to continue driving. They had to wade in the water to higher ground.
Some ten houses were washed away by the floodwater. The occupants tried to save whatever they could before moving to higher areas. Since the rescue teams could not get to the flooded areas in time, the men had to brave the fast-rising water to rescue the old folks and children. Students attending the morning session classes were trapped in their school. They were later rescued by the Fire Department. The afternoon session classes were cancelled.
Rescue teams used ten boats to evacuate another 500 people from a nearby village which was the most badly affected village. About 70 families were given temporary shelter at the community centre.
Kota Tinggi District Officer reminded the villagers not to walk, swim or play in flood water. It is also dangerous for them to drive through flood water.
