Commentaire:

Gospel Reading: Luke 1:39-56 Commentary: In this account of the Visitation, we get a rare glimpse into the heart of Mary. Here we have the longest recorded account of Mary’s own words in what is traditionally called the Magnificat. After expe-riencing the announcement from the Angel Gabriel that she will bear Christ, Mary went quickly to her relative, Elizabeth, where she was greeted ecstatically. Filled with the Holy Spirit, she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (words familiar to us from the Hail, Mary). Elizabeth recognized the great privilege Mary had been given in being the mother of the Messiah and the tremendous faith Mary had to have to say yes to God. But Mary did not respond by patting herself on the back. She turned immediately to praising and thanking God. The beautiful words in her Magnificat show us her beauty and humility. She was filled with joy that God would choose her for this task. And she praised God for the many gifts he had bestowed upon her. Her words evidence the pu-rity of her soul. Mary’s heart desired nothing but to please the Lord. She was a faithful servant of God throughout her life, able to say a definitive and continuous ‘yes’ to Him because of the grace He poured out upon her. Her alignment with God’s will (based on her Immaculate Conception) is what allowed her to be assumed into heaven at the end of her earthly life, for sin leads to death and separation, but Mary remained sinless by God’s grace.

Comentario:

The Mass: Structure and Meaning (Source: USCCB) Introductory Rites

The Mass begins with the entrance song. The celebrant and other ministers enter in procession and reverence the altar with a bow and/or a kiss. The altar is a symbol of Christ at the heart of the assembly and so deserves this special rev-erence. All make the Sign of the Cross and the celebrant extends a greeting to the gathered people in words taken from Scrip-ture. The Act of Penitence follows the greeting. At the very beginning of the Mass, the faithful recall their sins and place their trust in God's abiding mercy. The Act of Penitence includes the Kyrie Eleison, a Greek phrase meaning, "Lord, have mercy." This litany recalls God's merciful actions throughout history. On Sundays, especially in the Season of Easter, in place of the customary Act of Penitence, from time to time the blessing and sprinkling of water to recall Baptism may take place. On Sundays and solemnities, the Gloria follows the Act of Penitence. The Gloria begins by echoing the song of the angels at the birth of Christ: "Glory to God in the highest!" In this ancient hymn, the gathered assembly joins the heavenly choirs in offering praise and adoration to the Father and Jesus through the Holy Spirit. The Introductory Rites conclude with the Opening Prayer, also called the Collect. The celebrant invites the gathered assembly to pray and, after a brief silence, proclaims the prayer of the day. The Opening Prayer gives a context for the celebration.

Year with St. Joseph

Wednesday Dedication to St. Joseph

The Church traditionally ascribed focal points for reflection

to each day of the week. As Saturdays were and still are devoted to Our Lady, Wednesdays were once devoted to St. Joseph. This year, consider giving your Wednesdays to St. Joseph and focus on learning about him and asking for his

Memorare to Saint Joseph

Remember, O most pure Spouse of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph my beloved patron, that never has it been heard

that anyone invoked thy patronage and sought thine aid without being comforted. Inspired by this confidence, I

come to thee and fervently commend myself to thee. Ah,

despise not my petition, dear Foster Father of our Re-deemer, but accept it graciously. Amen.

Who was St. Joseph? (FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS)

The following …

… Pope John Paul II in "Redemptoris Cus-tos" (1989) exhorted the faithful to look to St. Jo-seph in our troubled age: "This patronage must be invoked, and it is always necessary for the Church, not only to defend it against dangers ceaselessly cropping up, but also and above all to support it in those fearful efforts at evangelizing the world, and spreading the new evangelization among nations where the Christian religion and life were formerly the most flourishing but are now put to a difficult test....May St. Joseph become for all a singular mas-ter in the service of the saving mission of Christ that is incumbent on each and every one of us in the Church: To spouses, to parents, to those who live by the work of their hands or by any other work, to persons called to the contemplative life as well as to those called to the apostolate." Lastly, St. Joseph has been honored in our liturgy. Since the legalization of Christianity in A.D. 313, a Mass has been offered in his honor, beginning in the East. Pope John XIII on Nov. 13, 1962 ordered St. Joseph's name inserted into the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), a proper recognition for the Guardian of the Universal Church. Moreover, St. Joseph's feast day of March 19 is a solemnity and traditionally a holy day of obligation throughout the universal Church (Code Canon Law, #1246); how-ever, the United States was granted an exemption from the requirement at the request of the Third Ple-nary Council of Baltimore (1884) because of the difficulty of observing holydays in a non-Catholic environment. In 1955, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1 to present St. Joseph as the exemplar of all working men and to focus on the true dignity of human labor in con-trast to the "May Day" celebrations of communist countries.

What the Bible Says about

Matthew 1:22-25 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanu-el” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord com-manded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
