Mobility is emerging as a major strategic priority for enterprise IT as the number and variety of mobile devices (both smartphones and tablets)

that must be supported by the enterprise rapidly expands, driven largely by the consumerization of IT and the trend toward “bring your own

device” (BYOD) policies

Whereas IT previously had the ability to tell users “we don’t support that device,” they are now being presented with a wide array of devices

and being told by senior level executives to “make it work” – gone are the days of IT-dictated device homogeneity across the enterprise

Enterprises need to manage these devices – and deliver and manage both employee- and customer-facing mobile applications – in a secure

and cost effective manner

The ubiquitous use of smartphones and tablets by employees and customers is driving enterprises to develop cross-platform mobile applications

that provide similar functionality to applications available through a web browser or within the enterprise, in an effort to increase productivity of

employees and provide a better user experience for customers – mobile application platforms and testing software vendors provide key tools in

this mobilization effort

On the management side, early players in the mobility management space took a device-centric view, duplicating the OS-specific device

management functionality provided by Blackberry Enterprise Server, in cross-platform mobile device management (MDM) offerings

With an increasing acceptance of BYOD, which comingles corporate and personal data and applications on one device, enterprises are presented

with additional management and security challenges; the device-centric view taken by early MDM solutions is no longer sufficient

The devices-centric view that worked for IT when they were managing solely company-owned devices no longer works for employee-owned

devices which contain both corporate and personal applications and data – IT must adopt an application-centric view and secure the

corporate assets that really matter (corporate applications and data) on both corporate- and employee-owned devices

Mobile application management (MAM) vendors have emerged to address these challenges, providing application distribution, security

(locking and wiping of corporate applications and data), application updates and usage reporting

— Many MDM vendors and mobile development platform providers also recognize the need for a shift toward application-specific controls

and are providing overlapping functionality as well

While mobility has presented a rash of new challenges for enterprise IT, corporations are adapting to this new reality and many organizations are

learning to embrace the business benefits of mobility

A larger percentage of employees are carrying mobile devices (any employee with a smartphone is able to stay connected, rather than only

select senior executives for whom the company purchases devices), thereby increasing connectedness, availability, collaboration and

productivity

Increasing heterogeneity in the number of devices and platforms that IT is being asked to support

and secure adds a great degree of additional complexity to existing IT infrastructure

These new devices and operating systems are disruptive to the policies and tools that have been

implemented to manage existing IT infrastructure such as desktop and laptop computers

The consumerization of IT presents enterprises with a new set of challenges – IT can no longer take a one size

fits all approach to managing mobile devices, applications and security

ImplicationsTrend

As data and applications move outside of the secure perimeter of the enterprise, securing that data

becomes increasingly difficult

Increasing use of smartphones and tablets by employees and customers has greatly

accelerated the dissolution of the corporate network boundary; sensitive data is being taken

out of the enterprise, presenting increased potential for data loss

BYOD creates unique challenges not present when corporations provided devices to employees

IT has lost a degree of control over the endpoint because they no longer own the endpoint

Personal and business information is comingled on one device, creating issues when an

employee is terminated (company would prefer to wipe the device, but employee will resist as

it contains personal data) or a corporate lawsuit arises (company may be compelled to provide

all of the information on a device, but employee will resist as it contains personal data)

Application Development & Management Mobile application development is being driven by customer demands, business needs and security

concerns

Enterprises need to determine which use cases are best served by web applications based on

HTML5 (thin clients) versus those that require rich applications written in devices’ native language

(thick clients) or alternatively, consider virtual desktop applications

While thick client applications offer the best user experience and richest functionality, applications

and data that reside locally on the endpoint present additional security risks, so the benefit gained

must be carefully weighed against the potential risks; the less resident data, the less the need for

management and control; thick client applications also require additional development investment

as they need to be customized for each platform

Mobility Market Consolidation

Mobile Application Development – Selected Transactions

Given the growth of mobile devices in the enterprise, there is strong

demand for both software to manage these devices as well as

mobile applications to run on these devices

Large technology vendors will look to M&A as a means to enter

this growth sector

2012 through 2015 saw a significant amount of consolidation

among mobile application development providers, as vendors look

to provide a platform for building mobile applications and mobilize

their own solutions

We expect M&A in the mobile space to continue to accelerate in

2016 as established vendors look to extend their existing

application development, endpoint management and security

solutions to mobile device

The mobility sector remains fragmented with a large number of

small independent vendors – the space is ripe for consolidation
