Waseda University Weekly Schedule

English Theme, 2020 Fall Dr. Rubrecht, Friday 4 and Friday 5

Hello students! My name is Dr. Brian G. Rubrecht(ルブレクト)and I will be your instructor this semester. Yay! I think we have all learned a lot about being online during our Emergency Remote Teaching (緊急遠隔授業) since it started. Unfortunately, this situation is continuing. But it’s ok! We can do this! This sheet explains what we will do for the 2020 fall semester.

Please read it carefully Follow it STEP BY STEP. Steps are numbered. J

This is the Weekly Schedule. Each week gives you the activities, goals, and webpages for the on demand videos and answers sheets. We may not use Waseda Moodle much (but we might!). If you follow the Weekly Schedule, you can go at your own pace! And you can ask questions any time. Please:

do the week’s work BEFORE the class meeting time.

This is because we will use part or all of class time on Zoom to discuss and answer questions.

For example, if during Week 3 you have to do a homework assignment and turn in ARS, then: ① BEFORE WEEK 3’s CLASS: do the homework assignment ② DURING CLASS TIME: we use ZOOM to ask and answer questions ③ FROM 14:30〜MIDNIGHT FRIDAY: send me ARS and homework I know it sounds strange to do homework BEFORE the class, but because I am not in a classroom with students I cannot explain and answer questions in person as you go through the lesson. Therefore, be prepared for the lesson by following the Weekly Schedule and doing the assignments. I also want to give feedback in a timely manner. If everyone does the work before class time, I can check all assignments at the same time and email feedback to students (feedback is important!). Be aware of a few things: {1} Do NOT send ARS or homework assignments BEFORE the week’s class.

NO NO NO! Wait to send them AFTER class has finished on Fridays. {2} If possible, send BOTH the ARS and homework by attaching them to just

ONE EMAIL. {3} Please RENAME your files correctly (this is explained later). Using Zoom may not be possible every week. We may use Zoom for entire class periods. If you do not have a Zoom account yet, please make one as soon as possible by going here: https://zoom.us/jp-jp/meetings.html As a reminder, you may email me if necessary: [email protected] Also, my webpage is here: http://www.isc.meiji.ac.jp/~rubrecht/ You can see what my webpage looks like on the next page.

NOTE: Please watch the on demand videos and do all activities in order(順番に!), but read through EVERYTHING for each week BEFORE you start the activities (毎週のアクティビティにすべて⽬を通してから取り組んでください).

• You can click video links to watch the videos. • Go to my webpage and download the .docx or .pdf sheets. The documents

will either be in the “Downloads-General” section link or in the “Downloads-WU-ET” section link.

• If possible, print the .docx or .pdf files. • I will try to be on Zoom 20 minutes before the end of each class (but

some lessons we will be on Zoom ALL CLASS PERIOD. I want to meet students, answer questions, and give feedback. Be on Zoom at the end of class if you need help with something. Set an alarm so you won’t be late to the Zoom meetings!

• If you cannot be on Zoom, do not worry, but please talk to me if this is the case. We will have some Zoom classes this semester.

ET-WU Week 1 (September 25)

This is our first class. This means that we need to do introductions, check the syllabus, and do

some preparation for the semester and for the year.

PLEASE DO ALL OF THIS WEEK’S WORK BEFORE CLASS TIME IF POSSIBLE!

MUCH PREPARATION IS NEEDED!

Even if you have taken a class with me before you should still watch the videos again. It will

be a good refresher for you, and of course, I think maybe students have forgotten some things

(including some English!) over the break.

You must select ONE philosopher for your report. We will decide philosophers in the next

class.

Please be ready to decide your philosopher next week!

No two students can do the same philosopher, so do some research on the different

philosophers on the RIGHT SIDE of the List of Philosophers (the right side is the Fall

semester philosophers we will discuss). If someone in the class chooses the philosopher you

wanted to research before you have the chance to choose, you must choose another

philosopher. But don’t worry: all the philosophers are good!

------------------------------- [7] ------------------------------- This semester we will have a new ARS. The purpose is the same, but it should be clearer and

easier to use. Remember: renaming the ARS is important, as is its timely submission.

2. The .docx is probably most useful for most students (because you can just type

your answers into the Microsoft Word document).

And here is a VERY IMPORTANT VIDEO ABOUT RENAMING YOUR FILES!!!!!! You made it this far! So now you can see attendance is an important part of your grade.

I want you to be here! I also want feedback from you each lesson, if possible. I want you to

watch the on demand videos and learn in this class, even though we are not together in the

same classroom.

------------------------------- [9] ------------------------------- I have made a checklist so you know what needs to be emailed to me (and when). PLEASE

BE CAREFUL! These sheets represent part of your grade.

Email your sheets on the day of class, please!

DO NOT send me the Checklist. It is for you to read and check.

Email the files listed on the Checklist on the day of class, but only AFTER class has

finished!

• Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi (or possibly my webpage at the

“Downloads-WU-BG” link) for Zoom Meeting ID information.

• Remember: the purpose of Zoom is to see each other and for me to check if you have

any questions or problems, and to give feedback.

• If Zoom does not work, it’s ok. Relax! ------------------------------- [12] ------------------------------ Next week we need to choose philosophers, so…

I WANT EVERYONE TO BE ON ZOOM NEXT WEEK!

Be on Zoom at the beginning of class time!

Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi for the Zoom information (or my webpage at the

“Downloads-WU-ET” link).

Be aware:

1. If you cannot be on Zoom, or if you have problems with Zoom and cannot join,

don’t worry this time. Just realize that I might have to choose a philosopher for

you.

2. If your teacher has Zoom problems, it’s ok. I will randomly assign a philosopher

to students (but I prefer if students choose a philosopher themselves).

------------------------------- [13] ------------------------------ Do you see? Because Zoom might not work and because some students might not be able to

log in to Zoom, we need the ARS. That is your attendance grade!

------------------------------- [14] ------------------------------ Next, choose ONE version of the sheet, fill it out, and email it today with your ARS.

Why I Chose this English Theme Class

Go to “Downloads-WU-ET” and download this either this file:

Or this file:

ET-Why I Chose this English Theme Class.pdf

Use only one version!

This sheet is not for a grade. I just want to get some information about my students. This is

especially important this semester because I cannot meet my students in person in the

classroom.

For spring semester students, please do this again. You might have a new reason (different

from last semester) for why you chose this class.

Email your sheet to me. Do this whenever you have a lesson with answer sheets. Please

RENAME the answer sheet. For example: For example:

Taro Tanaka Friday 4 September 25 Why

Please RENAME your file correctly! It is very important!!!

------------------------------- [15] ------------------------------ Please read about next week’s class (below). Be prepared. There are more videos to watch.

Watch them BEFORE the class next week.

------------------------------- [16] ------------------------------ Fill out the ARS. (1) Use the ARS for your university (the WU version). (2) Don’t forget to change the file name! Please write your ARS file name like this:

Taro Tanaka Friday 4 September 25 ARS If there is a visible extension, it might look like this on your computer: Taro Tanaka Friday 4 September 25 ARS.docx or Taro Tanaka Friday 4 September 25 ARS.pdf Thus, in this order: first name last name class day and period month and day of the lesson assignment (in this case, the assignment is the ARS)

The file names are very important. Because I have many students with many ARS and assignments, I need your help to keep them

organized. I don’t want to lose any files! Thank you! Please do not put extra spaces or commas in the file name. Please separate class period and dates. Example: GOOD: Friday 4 September 25 BAD: Friday4 September25 BAD: Friday 4, September 25 BAD: 4 Friday 25 September (3) Incorrectly renaming the ARS (or other emailed files) = minus points (4) Email it to me: [email protected] Be sure to email after the lesson is finished and before midnight on lesson day (we have classes on Fridays, so let’s keep this class on Fridays, okay?).

ET-WU - Week 2 (October 2)

For today’s lesson, we will be choosing our philosophers. This may take a long time

(possibly most of class time). That’s ok. We can try to use some time to introduce each other,

talk about the class, etc.

Remember:

1. Choose at least 3 philosophers you might like to research.

2. I do not want to waste class time by students not IMMEDIATELY telling me which

philosopher they have chosen. This wastes your classmates’ time as well.

3. Make a memo of the philosopher you have chosen.

------------------------------- [1] ------------------------------- We choose our philosophers! Please keep track of which philosophers have been chosen!

And of course, please remember who your philosopher is!

------------------------------- [2] ------------------------------- After you have chosen your philosopher (and class is finished), you can start watching the on

demand videos of the lessons.

------------------------------- [3] ------------------------------- There are quizzes for each era of the on demand lessons. Here is the explanation:

Lecture 01 – Introduction (there is 1 on demand video)

Week 4:

You will learn how to write the reports. There are many videos to watch about this.

Week 13:

Lecture 26 – Final Mentions

Week 14:

I want this to be Zoom week. I want to be online with students. This is the day when I

answer questions about writing the report. I can check any drafts that you have about the

report, and explain in person things that some students might not understand. I would also

like to check quiz answers (Quizzes 06-11, if students have questions about the quizzes).

Week 15:

Students will email me their reports BEFORE CLASS STARTS. I also need your

CLASS NOTES at this time as well. I want to take some time on Zoom this day to discuss

the class and have students talk about what they learned together.

A few points about the weekly schedule:

(1) You must take notes about what is taught in each lesson (Lesson 01 and Lessons

12 to 26). THESE NOTES WILL BE FOR A GRADE. You may write your

notes on notebook paper if you want, but later you will have to either take photos

of those pages or scan them. At the end of the semester you will email your notes

to me (this is part of your grade for the semester). If you type your notes in

Microsoft Word, it will be easy to email to me, but any way that you want to take

notes is fine. Your notes can be in any language (i.e., in English or Japanese).

(2) You can go at your own pace. You do not have to watch the on demand videos

and do the quizzes during class time. Any time is fine! However, you have

deadlines for the quizzes (and the ARS). They must be sent by the end of the class

period (or, if you watch the videos during class but have another class

Page 17: [ET-WU 2020 FALL] Waseda Universityrubrecht/ALL DOWNLOADS/Downloads-WU...[ET-WU 2020 FALL] 1 Waseda University Weekly Schedule English Theme, 2020 Fall Dr. Rubrecht, Friday 4 and Friday

[ET-WU 2020 FALL]

17

immediately after ours, you can send to me by the end of the same day. DO

NOT BE LATE WITH QUIZZES! Late quizzes receive fewer points.

(3) You must watch the videos and do the quizzes BY YOURSELF. Do not ask

classmates or other people for help. Do not use the Internet to answer the

questions. If you watch the videos AND TAKE NOTES, you should be able to

answer all of the quiz questions.

(4) Also about the quizzes: some students just randomly answer the quizzes. They get

very very very low scores. This makes it clear who has not watched the videos. If

you don’t understand something (a general concept of a philosopher) you can ask

me.

(5) If you have questions about how to do the videos or quizzes, please ask me.

(6) If you have difficulty with Zoom, email me. I know that some students might not

be able to do Zoom every week, or for an entire class period. Please let me know

if this is the case.

------------------------------- [2] ------------------------------- This is Week 3, so you have 2 on demand videos to watch:

Lecture 01 – Introduction (Complete)

https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f62bf99297

------------------------------- [3] ------------------------------- You have just 1 quiz to do this week (for Lecture 01). Email your quiz answer sheet to me.

Do this whenever you have a lesson with answer sheets. Please RENAME the answer sheet.

For example:

Taro Tanaka Friday 4 October 9 Quiz 01

• Try to be in the Zoom classroom by 20 minutes before the end of the lesson. If you do not or cannot join, don’t worry. It will not affect your grade.

ET-WU - Week 14 (January 15)

------------------------------- [1] ------------------------------- This is the in-class Zoom week. Log in to Zoom at the beginning of class.

If you have a draft you want checked, then:

1. Email it to me by January 14. I might not have time on January 15.

2. Make sure you make it look as much like your final version as possible. I

cannot give adequate feedback unless I know what you understand and

don’t understand about writing the report.

Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi (or possibly my webpage at the “Downloads-WU-

ET” link) for Zoom Meeting ID information.

REMEMBER: This is the LAST CHANCE to ask me any questions about the report. If you

make a mistake with the final version of the report that negatively influences your grade (for

example, you have no citations, you have no references, you plagiarize either on purpose or

on accident), you will NOT BE ALLOWED TO CHANGE YOUR REPORT AFTER

YOU SUBMIT IT.

Severe mistakes could mean that you fail the class. Please check the Report Grading Video

and Report Grading Sheet and make sure you understand them.

------------------------------- [2] ------------------------------- To be super mega ultra clear, let me remind you that next week you will give me (by email)

two things:

(1) your report. This report is at least 1,000 words long, has citations and references,

and it follows the academic English writing style taught for this class.

(2) your class notes. You can take photos of your pages, you can scan them… It does

not matter (if you typed them all in Microsoft Word, that’s easy! Just email me

your document!). ----------------------------- [END] ----------------------------- Fill out the ARS. (1) Use the ARS for your university (the WU version). (2) Don’t forget to change the file name! Please write your ARS file name like this:

Taro Tanaka Friday 4 January 15 ARS If there is a visible extension, it might look like this on your computer: Taro Tanaka Friday 4 January 15 ARS.docx or Taro Tanaka Friday 4 January 15 ARS.pdf Thus, in this order: first name last name class day and period month and day of the lesson assignment (in this case, the assignment is the ARS)

The file names are very important. Because I have many students with many ARS and assignments, I need your help to keep them

organized. I don’t want to lose any files! Thank you! Please do not put extra spaces or commas in the file name. Please separate class period and dates. Example: GOOD: Friday 4 January 15 BAD: Friday4 January15 BAD: Friday 4, January 15 BAD: 4 Friday 15 January (3) Incorrectly renaming the ARS (or other emailed files) = minus points (4) Email it to me: [email protected] Be sure to email after the lesson is finished and before midnight on lesson day (we have classes on Fridays, so let’s keep this class on Fridays, okay?). .

------------------------------- [1] ------------------------------- This is the final class.

EMAIL ME YOUR REPORT and NOTES BEFORE CLASS STARTS!

Log in to Zoom at the beginning of class.

Let’s talk about our reports, our philosophers, and what we learned in this class this semester.

----------------------------- [END] ----------------------------- Fill out the ARS. (1) Use the ARS for your university (the WU version). (2) Don’t forget to change the file name! Please write your ARS file name like this:
