    August 16, 1977Dear F r i e n d s i n C h r i s tThere a r e many reasons f o r prayers c f r e j o i c i n g and of i n t e r c e s s i o n here i n Ghana.F i r s t I w i l l share K^lbs . prayer needs with you. Their baby, Robert Seth, was bom onMay 12a b ig boy of over 8 l b s . He needed some minor surgery on h i s four th day and hadd i f f i c u l t y with diarrhea f o r some days, but a t l a s t seemed t o be on the upswing, gainingweight each week. On June 2^-, a pathology report from a biopsy done a t the time cf hissurgery re ve al ed th e s h a t t e r i n g news t h a t he had a malignant tumor. F or v ario us reaso ns,they prefer red t o have th e s urg ery done i n the U.S. , ajid four days l a t e r l e f t f o r Youngwood,Pa. Our l a t e s t news here i s t h a t the surgery i s over d t h a t p r e l i m i n a r y t e s t s indicatedt h a t the malignancy had not spread. We do not know yet the type or length of treatment t h a twill, be needed now. David, Barbara, l i t t l e David (3), and Seth all need your prayers.

In V J May newslatter, I told you of the strained relationships in the fellowship ofchurches here. The Christ ian chu rches, excep t one, have indeed n o t i f i e d the Churches ofJesus of their 'separation from the fel lowship. The leaders had met and discussed the situa t i o n and decided t o s t a t e t h e i r reasons i n a l e t t e r and d e l i v e r it t o a l l the churches f o rreading. The fa lse teacher who brought the matter to a climax, continues to try to convincesome that Tii^^ is noT tiying to take, over the Churches of Jesus, bu t hip a ct io ns blifiuhiswords. He goes with his car to assure some people whom a graduate was cul t ivat ing for anew congregation that there was no difference between him and the graduate. Then, he persuades them to ride in his car to h is own congreagation. The man has done t h i s i n twol o c a t i o n s .

We do not know what the future holds, but we are still working and praying so t h a t theChristian churches wil l grow and multiply and be firmly grounded in the Wod and led by theSp i r i t One new graduate and one current student have expressed in teres t in making thechurches o r groups they l e a d p a r t of the brotherhood.

The new church a t Kpenu has no preacher currently; th e s tudent who was working with themhas graduated and sees no way to support h imsel f there or to be supported by the people. There w i l l be two men in the September class from t h a t church, so maybe they can ielp onw e e k e n d s .

    Mr. C h r i s t i a n and I have v i s i t e d t h e D z e b e t a t o church t w i c e . The first v i s i t was t oguide the church in suspending t h e i r preacher, also a G.C.C. graduate, for immoral behavior.The second visi t was to determine i f they wsuited the suspension to end now but they confirmed t h ei r e a rl ie r decision to make it u n t i l the end of the year . We were much encouragedby t h e i r firm stand, and l i f t e d up s p i r i t u a l l y by the joyful worship service. A young manin teacher t raining college has been del ivered from drunkenness and other sins by the graceof Chris t , The preacher 's prayers were instrumental in his conversion and he f e e l s verysad about the suspension, bu t i s wil l ing t o help lead during t h i s period.

    The new church in th e c olle ge build in g i s hatnging in there1 The student preachers areon vacation, and the f a i t h f u l few are doing t h e i r ges t t o keep going. Some have f a l l e n bythe wayside in s p i t e of v i s i t s encouragement and prayers. Others are f a i t h f u l on Sundaymorning, but not fa i thful to Bible Study. Sometimes it i s transportation d i f f i c u l t i e s fromwork or home responsibi l i t ies for the women that keep them from coming. Life i s very hardand just working and eating each day i s a big job. One young man, a t leas t , i s growing andeager for more responsibi l i ty. He i s going to preach his f i r s t sermon in August. I lembersare now teaching the children during the service, so I can s t a y i n th e s er vic e and l i s t e nt o the preacher. Pray f o r us, t h a t more of the Christ less souls in Abeka wil l be won t oHim,/ Joseph Nsiah*s-visa was granted a t l a st and he l e f t here May I6, He had to miss the/first two week summer session at C.B.S. but took the rest. He visited the N CC with RonRife and then has v i s i t e d i n Pennsylvania and North Carolina, Pray f o r him as he approaches a f u l l year of graduate study i n l a t e August,

    Ghana Christian College had i t s annual graduation on June 18. Four men. received t h e i rdiplomas for the three y ^ r . course. Two have a clear meams of livelihood a lready as they preach Christ. A third has prospect of a good job in September. The fourth, the goodchurch p l a n t e r i s s t i l l seeking the way to support himself now. Pray f o r him, especial ly ,t h a t the Lord w i l l open the way. Graduation night , David Kalb gave the facul ty a special-tre t a n d t o o k u s l l o u t t o e a t t t h e l o c a l C h i n e s e r e s t a u r a n t .

    D e a r F r i e n d s i n C h r i s t :

Last Sunday eleven persons were baptized into Christ at Azizania, and twelve personswere baptized at Djeitrorkope. Carl Bridges, Nicholas Otumfor a graduate) and IsaacOpattah (student) have visited these people every weekend for three months, teaching and

.preaching. A student from nearby Pastor's Training Institute where Nicholas teaches hasalso been involved part of th e time. The new Christians at Djeitrorkope have a niceimilding to meet in.and have every chance of growth according to CarH- Those at Azizaniahave no shelter yet. They met under the coconut t rees along the path fo r teaching sessions, but were easily distracted. Azizania is located at the mouth of the Volta River, and theocean tides are eroding the river banks, Two houses were damaged and abandoned and biggullies left by invading waves since the men began to t each there . We praise the Lord fort h e s e baby congregat ions and pray tha t they will be nurtured r egu la rl y in the Lord.

The church at Kpenu hasa ' t quite been abandoned by its graduate co-founder. Withsome help, he will invest in a coffee plantation, to be supervi sed by his adopted father. The income from this will help him live and serve at Kpenu. Only one of the proposed, students came from Kpenu church, but he is working very hard. He'l l never b e cum laud ,but he is cheer fu l and humble and eager to learn.

Speaking of stud.ents college re-opened on September 6. We have eight first yearmen for a total student body o f twenty-five. For the first time in several years, we havetwo men in their fourth year, a iming fpr an A. B. degree. The freshmen are a quieter groupthan las t year 's . The Lord alone knows the future, and we only pray that we can be Hisservants i n helping to prepare t h e s e men for service in His kingdom. Fi ft een o f them are^receiving from the college the equivalent of $8.70 per week to_ help them eat. In light ofcurrent p ri c e s, i t i s a very small amount. It helps , though, and we a re g ratefu l- to you whohelp us meet thi s s izeable part of our budget every month. The country has recentlyimported much r ice tha t is available for less t han $1.00 per pound and that is better thani t w a s .

My old faithful subjects of Bible Survey, Music and English con ti nue, but I havenew ones: psychology, Christian Education, and Church History. I am doing the best Ican but hoping to do better. I 'm looking forward to the p ractic al side of Christ ianEducation. Please pray that the Lord will work in the class so that they will put intop r a c t i c e what t h e y l e a m .

The last of August I moved from my temporary home (te n miles from Abeka) intoBridges* home. My bed, refrigerator, bookca se , v isua l aids, and a lot of et cetera werea l ready there in my bedroom, and I squeezed in some more clothes and food. I t s cozy

Both Bridges' chi ldren go to school and preschool now . G lenda must-drive for morethan an hour at noontime to pick them up. Carl teaches until 1:00 P . M . , but I am off atnoon, so it works out well for me to get lunch every day. Glenda gets breakfast everymorning and is off with the children shor tly after seven. I t s a long busy morning for allo f u s .

The electricity supply is so poor in this area that the fluorescent lights in theschool go out or just begin to b lin k, even after they have been on, between 6:30 and11:00 P.M. We turn ou r refrigerators of f for many hours of the day to preserve the motors, when the fluctuations are the worst. Yesterday Carl put up fixtures in the school forregular incandescent bulbs. They may be dim, but at least they come on We are tryingto find stabi l izers to protect our refrigerators.

For th e p ast tw o weeks, the water has been off about eight daylight hoyrs eachday, to o. There are s to rage tanks on the two faculty houses and for the college. Theyreally are l ifesavers. We went ahead and bough t one fo r the new house even. though itpained us to spend more than $350.00 fo r a cheaply made galvanized box that holds 250g a l l o n s .
