AN EXCEPTIONAL WEEKENDnmid-December Itoo oft in my beautiful new red truck with friend Kwame Amevor and with the student and evangelistRichard Ntim for Western Region. Since the engine was very new, we limited our speed to 50 mph. But, oh how pleasantt was to drive with power steering and newer suspension. Thank you, God, and thank you, friends in the States. Wealternated between Chnstmas carols and gospel music on the tape player. We drove about six hours with one brief stop in1akoradi to buy roasted plantain and groundnuts for lunch. We arrived in Amokwasuazo about 3 p.m. and werewelcomed by some of the members of the church in thatsmall village. The preacher Bro. Seth Croffie arrivedabout a half hour later fromthe other town where he leads asecond church. I was given a room of my own with adouble foam mattress mosquito net and kerosene lamp. The three men shared another room. AH the buildings werebuilt of mud and some were plastered and floored withcement. Thatched roofs were the rule although in this

forest area palm leaves are used instead of grasses. Wetoured the village greeted some village elders saw theunfinished mud chapel walked to a couple ofnearby farmsand had a look at the stream a quarter mile away fromwhich they carry all their v/ater. At our hosts requests wehad brought our own drinking water. a meal at AmoKwasuazo with Seth, Kwame, and RichardWe had a prayer service Friday night, an early morning devotion on Saturday before some left for their farms, and twoSunday services. Bro. Ntim did the preaching, teaching and prayer meeting. Kwame taught the children on Sundaymorning and evening.Regularly during the weekend the women served us wonderful food of a wide variety. All of the meals were eaten out ofdoors around a small wooden table. The protein included fish, chicken, beans, eggs, snails, and bush meat from therodent family. {Don't say ugh. Squirrels and rabbits are from the same family.) The meat was tasty and very tender.Baths were taken morning and evening with abucket in the usual outdoor bath shelter. For our convenience, they had dug abrand new pit latrine completely enclosed with woven paim leaf walls and door. They said the old one was too far away. The overwhelming impression we received the whole weekend was one of great love ofthe 35 or so members toward eachother and to us. The blessing and encouragement we took to them was more than equaled by their warm friendliness andhospitality. They were thrilled because we were the first city Christian church members to sleep right in the village withthem. When we left on Monday morning, the back of the truck was filled with their gifts of farm produce. They also gaveeach of us some money, and what they gave to me was more than 1had put into the offering 1have written much moreabout this experience, praying that some of the blessing will flow into your hearts. You make it possible for me to serve inGhana

    NEW CAMPUS PROGRESS

It s slow. We are grateful that we were finally able to get a legal document thumb printed by the old chiefand his elderssaying they had never sold the three acre section ofour plot that was being claimed by another man. Then our original deedwas misplaced, and at last we had to have a new one prepared and properly thumb printed ands signed. Now thosedocuments are ready for presentation to the Lands Department. Pray that they will accept the affidavit about the threeacres. Efforts are being made to obtain building permits so we can break ground for the first building: a classroombuilding. Pray for these efforts.

WEL OME TO THE RIFESRon and Doris Rife returned to Ghana after a twent>'-two year hiatus except fur a few working visits. We areglad to havethem here. Ron is teachingclasses and serving on the Relocation and other Committees.PERSON L NOTESConnie Sheffler had a group birthday celebration in early November since her husband Bob's, Brian Jennings' and mybirthdays fa ] within a five day period. Fifty nine for me. Guess what next year brings?...Two days before Christmas Iwent to the doctor with a swollen, red-streaked forearm and hand and an ugly sore. She scolded me for waiting so long andtreated me for an infected skin worm intrusion. It looks as if I want to sample everything Ghana has to offer...It was myturnto hostour missionary Christmas dinner, although everybody brought some of the delicious food. Kalbs had two PeaceCorps girls with them, so they were included. It was a Happy Day...My annual vacation between the 26 ^ of Dec. andthereopening of college turned into a working vacation. The friend who usually goes with me was unable to because of herout-of-control diabetes (she s better now). I stayed at Sheffiers' house (they were in the U.S. for holidays), but I took mytypewriter along and almost completed a long list oftasks... Both complete taillight assemblies were stolen offmy new truckon the carport the night ofJanuary 11. My fault. I should have had the screws spot-welded n the beginning.

THANK GOD FOR: A new term of opportunities to teach and serve; Kalbs' new granddaughter, Emily Sue; the newtruck; forthehealth and strength ofthefaculty and staffofthecollege.PETITION GOD FOR: Money to build the new campus; health for the students who fall mentally and physically;mutual love and cooperation in the Christian churches brotherhood.Gratefully yours,

    TR IP TO KONONGO CHURCHES

On a Saturdayin January, our lo l minister, MatthiasTornude, wentwithme to a twonabout 140milesfromhere called Konongo. I felt so much stress anticipating difficult driving conditions that I lostpatiencewhenmyusual traveling companionwas late and we left withouthim. As it turned out, trafficwas manageable, and the new truck made the trip much less of an ordeal than 1had expected. It hurtKwame s feelings to be leftbehind, and I m sorry 1did that. Next time I will give him a departure time30 minutes ahead of my real goal.Matthias and I met with leaders from the four small Konongo area congregations that Saturday afternoonconcerning a plan the National EvangelismCommittee has. In the evening we participated in a lastminute outdoor preaching service in the small town where the newest congregation is. Several peoplegave their names for followup. On Sundaywe participated in the morning worship service and presented to the church the gift ofencouragement sent from the Abeka church. It was the equivalent of about 28.00. After that, wereturned to Accra, stopping for a late lunch on the way.

    May, 1997Dear Friends in Christ,

A T LE OF A F R I C ASetback No . 1Sometime in 1994 the college paid for a T ' ^ .thirty acre plot. While the mason was setting ^ ' a _up concrete property markers, adifferent clan ^ I :, *--*from the same tribe as the sellers came and ' ' * f t 'knocked down the pillars and shot guns in : ' ' . ^ - \ 1;the air. They said the land belonged to them ruJT- - ^ ^a nd t he chief a n d e ld er s wh o sold it to us ha dno right to do so. The police were called 1 ' ^

    from a different town to stop the ruckus. ^At our insistence, the original sellers gave usa thirty-three acre plot on theother side of ^ ' -v , 'the highway that was within their right to ^ f Tsell. Theydid so in October 1994. It took i '' . until January 1995 to get the place properly M*- -surveyed for a site plan and to have a legal ^ ' ' ^ , wCs^^p**deed prepared and signed. rs.f}/,' ;

r6-r . , - ^Setback No. 2 \ , . / ' - ' . . ' 'Efforts were begun toget the land registered f ^^ - T at theGovernment LandsOffice. Things do a ' -not movequickly. In 1996, the Lands Departmentsaid that three acres ofour plotwere registered in someoneelse's name. Theseller's mark wasthat ofa chief in a different village. Sincehis namewasthe sameas oneof ourpaststudents, the Principaltracked down that student, who in turn led usto the oldman, a distant relative, whosemark had been used. He and his elders saidthey knewno man bythe nameofthe saidowner, and they had never soldthat piece ofland because Itwas not theirs to sell. It tookmonthsto find outthe proper kind ofpapersweneeded and tohavethemmadeand then to get them signed bythat old chiefandhiselders.

    S e t b a c k s 3 and 4

At lastwewereready to refileouroriginal papers plusthe affidavit andotherdocuments concerning the threeacresbeingquestioned. However the Principalwas on a visit to his sons in the U.S., and the original deedcould not be located even afterphone conversations with the Principal. So the processwas on hold until the Principal's return to Ghana inNovember. The solutionwas for the college to pay for a new deed and several copies, all ofwhich needed to be signed bythe village chief and elders. All thistook numerous trips to accomplish. Early this year the papers were reflled. While the process was going on, the fees for registeringthe land were raised to C2.600,000 (more than $1300).Setback N o. 5In April this year, the Lands Department said they had discoveredthat another plot within our land was also registered to someone

else. Why didn t they discover it at the same time as the other one? Who knows?Th e new claimant had the same clan name as a young man in our church. The chiefwho sold us the land said the claimant workedinthe Lands Department. He hadbeen sold the land by a rival chiefwho had been defeated in a court battle with our chief. Th^Principal asked the youngman in our church to go to the LandsDepartment to trackdowntlie claimant. George found that the manhad retired, but his siter still worked there. The sister told George where the man lived. The present plan is to find him as soon aspossible and persuade him to accept another plot of land from the present chief in place of the one that is within our land. I'll let you

I wasn't feeling well, so other than taking equipment and water on two days, I attended onlythe Sundaymorning service.Severalpeopleremarkedon the orderlinessopf the conventionand the depth of thinking in the teaching and discussions. About adozen people in the village responded to the evening preaching, were baptized and are attending faithfully.

ABEKA CONGREGATION T O PLANT DAUGHTER CHURCHFor years we have talked about someday planting another city church sponsored only by our local congregation. This year we arereally starting We have three couples, two men and one young woman in our church who live in the targeted area. They haveagreed to be the nucleus. Abeka has given roughly $200 to a private school proprietor to roof two unfinished classrooms. Inexchange, we can use those two classrooms for Sunday services, Sunday School, and evening programs for as long as we need them.We hope to have our first morning service the third Sunday in June.T H E CLASSROOMDuring second term several of us picked up an extra class because Mrs. Eghagha needed some time off to finish her Master's thesisfor the Universityof Ghana at Legon. She finished and must now wait patiently until the examiners call her. For this third term wehave also done some shifting. Enoch Nyador is coming one day a week to teach a double period of Cross-cultural evangelism. Weare also preparing within the next two months for the first visit of an inspection team for government accreditation.

LOC L BENEVOLENCEThe Women's Fellowship ofAbeka sponsored a clothing drive for some Christians in the Nkwanta area whose houses andbelongings were completely burned when a fire swept through the thatched roof village. The evangelist there said the peoplewerejust overwhelmed at this kindness shown them. They had enough to share with non-Christians in the village. Clothing brought after^he deadline will besent to ahotff needy area in the north.

This is a microcosm of thegreat extremes one finds in Ghana, with the majority on the lower end of the economicscale

This time I am talkingaboutphysical light. Forfive yearswehave sufferedin this immediate neighborhood from lowvoltage, especiallybetween six and ten inthe evening. It got sobad that most ofthe fluorescent tubes went out by7 p.m. That leftno light atall inthe library. I sometimes found it difficult to grade papers in the evening when the incandescent bulbs were so dim. BarbaraKalb has beenmaking periodic trips to the office in charge of our area for more than eight months. Under her pleasant but relentlesspressure, they designed a new project for our area. Finally, about two weeks ago, we were hooked up to a new transformer right oncollege property. We are so g^teful to God and to Barbara Kalb. Other neighborhoods scattered throughout the city have the sameproblem we had.

You will remember that I spend mostof mychurch timewith Abeka Christian Church. Inthe last couple months therehave been at leastten baptisms. Our follow-up program for new converts has been in disarray for some time. A youngman hasmade a good suggestion onhowto revive it; let's praythe plan will come to frnition. It makes mesadthat I amunableto keep up physically as much as I used to.The Women's Fellowship did their annual missionary project. With items the women brought we made up smallChristmas parcels for 16 &milies or individuals who are involved in missionary work far away from Accra. I wasshocked how the ladies used the scotch tape - long strips of it - but the parcels did get wrapped in bright paper. Bro.Enoch made a trip to theNorththe verynextweek, andhetookmostof themalongfor delivery.
