Every term a few students come to school l a t e with v a ri ou s e xc us es ; some ar eflimsy and others are highly unusual. Last September two students were delayedbecause a t r iba l war with real shooting was going on over farmland in t he i rarea. The Ghana army came in to impose peace and declared a curfew that requiredpeople to stay in their houses 24 hours a day fo r several days. These two students t r ied to sneak ou t of town to come to school but were arrested and fined.A few days l a te r th e curfew was l i f ted and they came on to school. AfterChristmas, Sunday Ude was more than a week late because the harmattan, th e aircurrent tha t brings dry dusty a ir down to the coas t was so s ev er e ov er Accrathat the planes from Nigeria could not. see well enough to land.

During that pre-Christmas period, the Hostetters enjoyed the presence and helpof Eddie Hancuff, senior s tudent at Roanoke Bible College. e came on a visi tor svjjia_jthe_jiiiddljejDf_jLu.gustajuLAvas--able-to- stay-4:ia4_mid-Novenvber-, hel-ped-4n -the Sunyani church, directed the V.B.S. and visited a school fo r the disabledincluding the hearing impaired, to see i f his skill in sign language could beused by the Lord in Ghana. Pray for Eddie and his f inal decision about his l i f ew o r k

In September I enjoyed a quick weekend t r ip to Abidjand Ivory Coast to vis i t theBob Shefflers and the George Pickens. e women worked on plans for workshops witha family orientat ion for the Missionary Seminar to be held there this June. Sincethen we have worked through correspondence and the mail service to Ghana beforeChristmas was poor and f rus t ra t ing . t looks as i f the air fare to West Africais j u s t to o much formany of the other Christian Church missionaries in Africa. There will be some American visitors however we will just have to rearrangeor combine our workshops to best meet the needs of those who do come. Even foral l the West African missionaries less than 15 of us) to meet in one place willbe an exciting development. The Wayne Shaws from Lincoln Christian College willv i s i t us here in Ghana e i t h e r before or a f t e r the Seminar.

Also in September, Christian, Joseph, and I took part in the f irst graduationof the Koforidua extension taught by.Patrick Mensah There were six graduateswho had been in night classes for two years. I t is a different program fromthe resident school here, but lavs a very gond fminHat.Inn. flnp of thncp graH-uates is now the preacher for the Akim Manso church, and i t is growing. Sincethe changing exchange rate has given the col lege more cedis we gave theKoforidua extension a lump sum to use fo r this academic year.

Last August, we researched and made plans for a consumer shop in the college wherefaculty and staff can buy food and other, commodities for a small percentage ofactual cost. This is an acceptable way in Ghana of helping employees withoutraising their taxes. Mrs Nsiah is the shopkeeper, and I do the driving for theonce a month shopping. She buys wholesale so we come home with cartons oftomato paste mackerel, soap powder, bath soap, etc. and 100 pound sacks ofsugar and rice. e tr ied flour and corn but they got buggy before we coulduse them up. I m s t i l l buying buggy corn to make dog food. Ben doesn t mind.

In August, some church leaders finally met to work on restructure plans fo r thebrotherhood. These ideas were presented to the pastors elders and deacons ata leadership retreat. They gave their reactions and ideas, and the f i rs t groupmet again a t Sunyani in October. These plans were then presented to th eChristmas convention a t Sunyani. The most notable change is a means fo r churchesin the same geographical area to work cooperatively in evangelism and benevolence. e already meet r eg io na ll y f or Easter conventions. The churches liked t h i s ideaand agreed that national officers be chosen out of these regional groupings. The biggest disappointment to some of us was that the people did not agree thatthe national chairman should have just a four year term, although eligible fo r

The next morning I d i d n t feel wel l so stayed home from church. That was th ef i r s t of three attacks of malaria tha t month. The third one did not respond toany of the usual medicines and I ended up in th e mil i ta ry hospital for six days.An /\merican Mennonite nurse was with me the day I was admitted bu t from then onth e vis i t s food, bi l l s and errands and prayers were all taken care of by GhanaianChrist ians. Mensah, my house helper prepared and brought food to me three timesa day. I didn t feel l ike eating Ghanaian food, although usually I l ike i t verymuch. The drug the doctor used was very effective but i t gave me rubber legstherefore a l l locomotion was by wheelchair for a few days. By the sixth day th eblood t e s t s had been free of malaria parasi tes for three days and I was scheduledfor release the next day. Then an outside la b t es t came back indicating I hadtyphoid fever. The doc to r sa id I could e i t h e r be t r a n s f e r r e d to the i n f e c t i o u sdiseases ward fo r two more weeks, or go home and be ext ra careful about personal

-hygiene. I opted fo r home I took the prescribed-medicine everyday f^r tKenext two weeks, and Mensah did his best to s tuff me full of food. I graduallygained strength and began to write l e t t e r s or work on lesson plans when I fe l tl ike i t . I had missed f i r s t term finals and the school Christmas party. I didnot go to th e Christmas convention in Sunyani because i t takes a lo t of physicalsp r i r i t ua l and emotional energy.

    Hoste t t e r s came down the da y a f t e r the convent ion ended and flew out the nextevening for fur lough. I went to the a i rpo r t and sa t in a lawn chai r as the t e rminal is woefully short of seating. After church Christmas Day, I rested in th ehouse unt i l Mensah told me dinner was ready a t t he i r house. had shared someof th e f ixings but Happy did a ll th e work. Dinner was delicious curry-flavoredr i c e an d f r i e d c h i c k e n .

The next day Anna Marie the Mennonite nurse and I went to Busua beach fo r aweek. cooked ou r own meals on a kerosene burner swam walked rested andread. I t was a week t ha t d ef in it el y added to my strength. When school reopenedon January 3 I was ready to go .

In January we started th e renovations on. the house Kalbs will use: a new roofsome masonry work, new water ta nk and tower extermination and painting. I m

-glad__we_sta^rted when we did because i t a l l takes time. I gave Mensah two weeksoff without pay so he could take the p ain tin g contract . He is very neat and wevalue tha t t r a i t highly. He was able to get two professional painters who arefriends of his to help him. All th e work is done except th e w at er t ow er. Thela t te r i s half done but I m sure we ll meet t he deadl ine. I m only sorry th eCouches could not enjoy a l l t h i s when they were here.

Before Christmas Dadzie had completed hi s own s ta ff apartment enough for thefamily to move in to . Because of busyness he kept delaying th e move, so while hewas a t th e Christmas convention hi s wife moved the family herse l f . After Kalbsare se t t l ed renovation on the second s t a f f aprtment can resume.

The church here in Abeka is working hard to move out and forward for the Lord. Some of our or ig ina l shepherds have no t been fa i th fu l and next weekend an evaluation will be held to improve i t . A newly-reconstituted worship committee i s alsobringing some change and improvement. Las t night I taught a song-leading classthe f i r s t in two years fo r new people. A current series of Sunday morning teachings (instead of sermons) is planned to give members a better grasp of the contento f S cr ip tu ra l witnessing.

The g enera 1 church committee is also struggling to prepare g ui de li ne s f or a benevolent committee. One needs to be a cultural expert to apply Christian principles

    The most cur ren t concern fo r se r ious prayer fo r th e work in Ghana i s the government requirement t ha t a l l churches r eg i s t e r or r e - r eg i s t e r. The present standards fo r approval seem to be s t i f f e r with grea t i n t e r e s t in what the churchesare doing to help develop th e n atio n, meaning economic development. The originalend-of-August deadl ine ha s been postponed t i l l the middle o f November. The David Kalb family ar r ived in Ghana on April 21. We welcomed them with g r e a tjoy an d very hot , humid weather. Within two hours o f t h e i r a r r i v a l in Abeka, ayoung man with mental t roub le came to my house an d s mas hed the two l e f t windowsin the pickup and made a b ig ho le in th e windsh ie ld . This was d is tu rb in g tofolks newly ar r ived and to th e r e s t o f us too . I t a l so complicated t r a n s p o r t at ion fo r several days while we worked to ge t the windows rep laced .
