The mission of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary is to equip leaders to fulfill

the Great Commission and the Great Commandments through the local church. 뉴올리언즈 신학교의 사명은 지역 교회와 지역교회의 사역들을 통하여 지상 대명령과

Purpose of the Course Sound exegesis is foundational to persuasive preaching. Working with the Book of Joshua, this

course seeks to prepare those in proclamation ministry for the task of expository preaching. As

such, the Pastoral Ministries Division and Biblical Studies Division desire to help develop

proclamation skills in the area of Old Testament history, word studies, and theological analysis–

all while remaining sensitive to the task of “rightly dividing the Word of God.” The work is

aimed at providing a model upon which students can establish an effective life-discipline of

study and sermon preparation.

Core Values, And Curriculum Competencies Addressed

This course will provide each student with the opportunity to develop further in the five core

values (Doctrinal Integrity, Spiritual Vitality, Mission Focus, Characteristic Excellence, and

Servant Leadership) that NOBTS believes are essential for the leadership of healthy Southern

Baptist churches. The Core Value Focus for 2016–2017, Characteristic Excellence, is addressed

by emphasizing proper interpretation and proclamation of Scripture. The Curriculum

Competencies specifically addressed in the course are Biblical Exposition and Worship

Leadership.

Course Description

This seminar centers on preparing expository sermons and deriving homiletical values from a selected Old Testament book. The work is aimed at providing a model upon which students can establish an effective life-discipline of study and sermon preparation. The exegetical component is taught by an Old Testament professor and the expository section by a Preaching professor. This course may be repeated as long as a different Old Testament text is being studied.

본 세미나는 구약성경의 책을 선택하여 설교적 측면들을 이끌어내어 강해설교를 준비하는 일에 초점을 지닌다. 이 세미나는 모델을 제공하여 학생들이 연구와 설교 준비의 효과적인 평생훈련을 확립하기 위한 목적을 가진다. 주해 부분은 대개 구약성서 전공 교수에 의해, 그리고 강해설교 부분은 설교학 교수에 의해 가르쳐 진다. 본 과목은 다른 구약성경의 책이 연구되는 한 반복될 수 있다.

1. Demonstrate a mastery of the major interpretive issues and theology of Jeremiah. 예레미야 서의 주요한 해석학적 문제들이나 신학에 대한 이해력을 보여야 한다.

2. Create exegetical information necessary as pre-work for homiletical exegesis. 설교 주해를 위한 사전 작업에 필요한 주해의 정보들을 발견한다.

3. Organize a series of exegetical-expository sermons/lessons from Jeremiah. 예레미야 서에서 연속적인 주해 혹은 강해설교나 교훈을 만든다.

4. Compose a complete sermon (manuscript) that indicates integration and characterization of

sound exegetical-homiletical principles. 건강한 주해 혹은 설교학적인 원리들을 사용하여 완전한

설교를 작성한다.

5. Value the contribution of Jeremiah to the preaching/teaching ministry of the local church. 지역교회의 설교나 교육 사역에 대한 예레미야 서의 공헌도의 가치를 인식한다.

Course Methods

1. The seminar will be primarily a series of directed studies under the supervision of the

professors. 세미나는 주로 담당 교수들의 지도하에 이루어지는 연속적인 지도학습이 될 것이다.

2. Lectures by the professors will provide the basis for movement from subject to subject

within the seminar. 교수의 강의가 세미나 내에서 토의 주제를 제공하는 근거가 될 것이다.

3. Assigned projects and presentations will sharpen the student’s knowledge and skills in

important areas of exegetical and homiletical study of Jeremiah. 과제물들의 발표는

예레미야서에 대한 학생들의 주해나 설교적 연구와 같은 중요분야의 기술이나 지식을 날카롭게

해줄 것이다.

Note: Dr. Sexton will lead the discussion of the background and exegesis of Jeremiah. Dr.

Lee will deal with the exposition and preaching of Jeremiah. 색스턴 교수는 예레미야서의 배경 및

Assignments and Evaluation Criteria 과제물 및 평가방법

Students are required to do the following assignments:

1. Read the assigned textbooks. 교과서를 읽으라.


2. Prepare a Background Paper on a critical issue or major theme from Jeremiah. The

Background Paper is to be 8-10 pages in length (double-spaced) [consult Turabian, 6 ed.

for format and style]. The Background Paper is due at the beginning of the first day of

class (May 22, 2017). Each student will make a verbal presentation of the paper during

the seminar.

예레미야 서론 및 배경연구: 학생들은 예레미야 서에 대한 서론 및 배경연구 보고서를

작성해야 한다. 서론 및 배경연구에 포함되는 내용들은 저자 및 저작연대, 예레미야 서의 문학적

특성 및 구조, 예레미야 서에 나타난 주요 신학적 개념들, 구약성경 혹은 신약성경에서 예레미야

서가 차지하는 위치 등을 포함해야 한다. 서론 및 배경연구 보고서는 Turabian 스타일에 따라 더블

스페이스로 작성하며 분량은 약 8-10매로 하며 2017년 5월 22일 세미나 첫날에 제출되어야 한다.

배경연구 보고서에는 예레미야서 전체에 대한 아웃트라인을 첨부해야 한다. 아웃트라인은 배경

연구 보고서의 페이지에 포함되지 않는다.

3. Prepare an Exposition from a selected text in Jeremiah. The passages will be assigned by

Dr. Lee. (Students should contact Dr. Lee for assignment. Have a first, second, and third

choice.) The Exposition must reflect use of the required texts plus two other texts from

the Bibliography. The Exposition is to be 10-12 pages in length (double-spaced). The

Exposition Paper is due the first day of class (May 22, 2017). 주해보고서: 학생들은 여호수아서에서 본문을 선정하여 선정된 본문에 대한 주해보고서를

작성해야 한다. 주해보고서의 본문은 이종길 교수에 의하여 결정되며 이를 위해 학생들은 예레미야

서의 주해를 원하는 본문 세 가지를 선정하여 이종길 교수에게 이메일 상으로 그 세 개의 본문

중에서 주해보고서의 본문을 확정해야 한다. 주해보고서는 더블 스페이스로 약 12매 내외의

분량으로 2017년 5월 22일 세미나 첫 날까지 제출해야 한다. 또한 다른 학생들에게 발표 자료들을

준비하여 발표 시 다른 세미나 참가 학생들에게 자료들을 배부할 수 있어야 한다 (담당 교수에게는

하드카피를 제출해야 하며 발표 시 다른 학생들에게는 이메일 파일 가능).

Note from Dr. Lee:

Exposition is presenting, explaining, or expounding a text of Scripture, usually involving

commentary and interpretation. It involves explanation, argument, application, and

illustration of the material at hand. Students are to use the two required texts and two

additional commentaries. Any direct quotes must be footnoted. The exposition will

include the student’s own interpretation of the text. The foundation for the exposition

should be the commentaries, but interpretation will include an application of the text to a

particular setting. The student may use a verse-by-verse exposition format or an

exposition of the text as a whole. Illustrations are permissible, but those illustrations

should not be lengthy. The Exposition should be developed to such an extent that

someone unfamiliar with the text could understand the meaning and the application. 주해는 주석과 해석을 목적으로 성경의 본문을 제시하여 설명하고 그 의미를 드러내는 과정이다. 즉 성경의 해당 본문을 설명하고 논증하고 적용하고 예화를 통해서 본문을 보여주는 것이다. 위에서 설명한 대로 두권의 교과서와 다른 두권의 주석을 선택하여 참고문헌으로 사용한다. 직접 인용은 반드시 각주를 달아 출처를 밝혀야 한다. 또한 주해는 본문의 해석을 포함해야 한다. 단순히 본문에 대하여 주석이 말하는 것만 기록하는 것이 아니라 설교에서 오늘날 본문이 청중들에게 무엇을 말하고 또 청중들에게 어떻게 적용해야 하는 가를 보여주어야 한다. 창세기는 내러티브 즉 이야기 형식으로 기록되었음을 기억하라. 각 이야기들로 부터 삶의 원리나 진리 그리고 적용점들이 나와야 한다. 제3자가 주해를 읽었을 때 본문은 어떤 내용인가, 본문이 주는 의미가 무엇인가, 그리고 오늘날 그리스도인들에게 본문이 어떻게 적용되어야 하는가 하는 점들을 보여주어야 한다.


4. Prepare a Sermon Series consisting of five 2-3 page (single-spaced) sermon briefs from

Jeremiah. These briefs should illustrate sound exegetical foundations for preaching (e.g.,

historical background, literary structure, content analysis, and homiletical principles).

Each student will submit a first draft of one Sermon Brief to be presented and

critiqued in the seminar. An introduction to the Sermon Series should be included

stating the purpose of the series and an explanation of why the particular passages were

selected. 예레미야 서에서 싱글 스페이스로 2-3페이지 분량으로 이루어진 다섯 편의 설교 요약문을 작성하라.

다섯 편의 설교 요약문 중에서 한 편은 세미나 시작과 동시에 제출한다. 나머지는 4편의 설교

요약문은 세미나가 종료됨과 동시에 제출을 마감한다.

5. Prepare a Final Paper of 15-20 pages in length (double-spaced). The paper will consist

of one of the following options:

Option 1 - A combination Exegesis and Exposition paper of a passage from Jeremiah.

The paper should include a full sermon manuscript of the selected passage. The sermon

manuscript portion of the paper should not exceed 7 pages of the document.

Option 2 - Select five (5) Theological Concepts from Jeremiah and give a roughly 2-page

reflection on each concept. Cite the references from Joshua where the concepts occur.

Both the completed Sermon Series and the Final Paper are due on June 30, 2017. 학생들은 15-20페이지 분량의 세미나 후 과제물을 준비하여 제출한다. 세미나 후 과제물은 두 가지

방법 중 택일하여 제출한다.

선택1: 예레미야 서에서 세미나 시간에 발표했던 본문을 제외하고 다른 본문을 선택하여 선택된

본문에 대하여 주해보고서를 작성하고 그 주해 내용을 바탕으로 그 본문에 대하여 설교 원고를

작성한다. 설교 분량은 7페이지를 초과할 수 없다. 나머지 8-13페이지는 주해의 내용으로 채워져야

한다.

선택2: 예레미야 서에 나타난 5개의 신학적 주제를 선정하여 각 주제들에 대하여 약 2페이지 정도의

신학보고서를 작성하라. 각 신학적 개념이 소개되는 예레미야 서의 본문을 밝혀야 한다. 완성된

주해 및 설교 보고서 혹은 신학 보고서는 2017년 6월 30일까지 제출되어야 한다.

Evaluation 평가방법

All course objectives will be evaluated through the grading of the course assignments and

examinations. Student participation and conduct in class and small-group discussions will also

be factors in evaluation and grading.

The student's final grade will be determined as follows:

1. Seminar Participation 세미나 참여도 20%

2. Background Paper 배경연구 보고서 20%

4. Exposition 주해 보고서 및 발표 20%

4. Sermon Series 시리즈 설교 20%

5. Final Paper 세미나 후 과제물 20%

Course Policies

Students should consult the current NOBTS Catalogue for the Seminary policy on class

absences. When emergencies exist, the student may petition the Academic Advisor for

permission to remain in class with excessive absences. Students also are reminded that being


tardy to class can result in absences being recorded (three times tardy will be recorded as one

class period absence) and that students, not the professor, are responsible for having their

presence in class recorded on the class roll when they are tardy in attendance.

Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the day due. Those

assignments turned in past the date and time due will incur a late penalty of ten points, which

will be deducted from the assignment grade. Assignments will not be accepted more than one

week past the date due without permission.
