Mr. Fernandez's letter, for whichwe are indebted to the courtesy ofHon. J. f. Kawainui, is a trust-worthy report of the position of tboHawaiian proselytes to Mormonismat Salt Lake City. An attempt isexposed to entrap these people intowhat is practically life servitude. Ifthe Government cannot reaoh thedupes now in Utah, something surelycan be done to prevent others fromfollowing them.

" The Hawaiian Political Associa-tion has appointed Tuesday, Nov.26ras nomination day for Noblesand Representatives. This organi-zation's platform is chietly constitu-tional amendment to secure anequal suffrage and elective publicollicera for all important positions. The Elele claims that the seciet so-

ciety captured by Deputy SheriffLyman in ITainakua was simply abranch of the Association, and de-

fies the authorities to find anythingtreasonable or seditious in its organ-

isation or principles.

THE PANAMA CANAL.

A special correspondent of theNew York Herald at Panama, writ-

out reference to De Lesseps' enter-

prise appeared more promising."The grounds for this sanguine feel-

ing are contained in the following

Htatcment:."According to official data re-

ceived here direct from headquar-ter, M. Unmet has been successfulin advantageously placing the un-

told lottery bonds witli a syndicate.Tbey realized 31,000,000 francs, ofwhich AJ0,p00,'000 francs liavo goneto payments, leaving in the handsof M. Hrunet the round aiiin ofIt ,000,000 francs, which by a recentlaw is 'exempt fioin all other daiiUM.'

HAWAIIANS IN OFFICE.

A PiLU.i.riN rept emulative calledon tin: Minister of Finance thismorning, and piopounded to him thefollowing inquiry:

O. There lias been ioma comment in the foreign p.ipers, to theeffect, that Ilawaiians were not re-

ceiving due consideration in the mat-

ter of employment in the differentdepartments' of the Government, andI have called to inquire if you couldgive the Hl'u.utix information as tothe number ot persons in Govern-ment service of all grades, in fact, every person who receives tegularpay from the treasury'

A. '1 hat is certainly an inter-esting question anil I shall be pleas-ed to gie you all the informationthat is at my disposal. It may takesome days, but 1 will confer withthe dittcrent departments and wills, eiid you a statement as soon as thestatistics can be made up.

.Mr. Damon, in further conversa-tion, gave some statistics fioni dataunder his hand bearing on the ques-tion, but theie is no object in givingthem in advance of a general state-ment. Tiie Minister finally

"Can I be of service toyon in any other way V"

This kindly pioil'er was met witha question regarding a financialtopic, which was answered with apromise of full information ou thenext closing of monthly accounts. Then the icpoiter raised another in-

terrogation point:Q Are you aware of any particu-

lar effect the news of our troublemay have made abioad?

A. In San Francisco the opinionwas that the Government had donewell in its prompt suppression ofthe outbicak. The feeling was thatit would not affect any Hawaiiansecurity, and it has not disturbedour trading interests in San Fran-cisco in the slightest. We have hadno word us yet legarding the effectof the news in Loudon, but thesentiment of ban Francisco being soreassuring would have a good In-

fluence there.

HMVAIIANS H DISTRESS AT SALT

LAKE.

Salt Lakh Citt, Utah,lulv 27, 18R!.

Jo. U. ICawainui & Mns. Kawainui,Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands,Everlastingjlove to you both. At

Inst we have lime to write to you.We left Snn Francisco, C'nl., on

the 10th ult., at 7 o'clock in theeening, and cnuie on for the SaltLake colony, the place where ourMormons aie so c"agcr to go. Whenwe got there, together with MajorSam' I Parker's family wc rcinuiLcdone day, and then they left us. Weslaved there for a few days. During that time we met several nativeIlawaiians, and saw with our eyeseverything concerning the way theylive here. Thc'wVite Moiuions arenot g the Ilawaiians who areheie, they are in gi eat distress a.t

present, and pitiful to look at. Theyhave made a very great- - mistake inthinking that this is a great countryof plenty for litem; for, alas, it isnot so. They have been greatlymisled by thctalk of the Mormonsat Honolulu. Those Mormons exaggerated tiling far beyond thetruth, and as l Have seen it tor my-

self, I have telegraphed to D. A.McKinley, the Hawaiian Consul-Gener- al

at San Francisco, Cal., tosee if something can be done forthese Ilawaiians here at Salt LakeCity, They arc indeed in great dis-

tress. The total number of Ilawai-ians here is 75, and only nine ofthem have any kind of a shelter, while the balance, has to sleep outin the open air on the grass withnothing but a blanket for a cover-ing. Another thing ;is, they cannotmet employment, and, what is worse, they hardly have anything to eat;we have to supply Ihcm with flourfrom day to day.

Wc leave Salt Lake City on the28th inst., and will go to St. Pauland from thence on to Chicago andright along to New York. This isindeed a niiseinblo nlaoe. Intenseheat and plenty of dust, while sick-

ness pievails all over the city. Weenjoyed good health all the wayfrom San Francisco until wc arrivedhere. The heat at this place at pre-sent is at 1 10 degrees. I think youhad better publish something aboutthis matter ltgarding the treatmentof Ilawaiians here; it may lie themeans of keeping back those whoarc wanting to come.' Those who arealready here feci very sorry that theyever left their country and theirhomes, selling their lands at a greatsacrifice. You will please inseitsomething in tie Kuokoa, so thatthe Mormon leaders will know thelate that has fallen upon these pcopie through their evil designs. 1

cahiiot write at length to you uponthis matter at present, as I havebut very little lime; but when I getto New York I will write again.JTgThe number of natives who returnby this vessel are twelve, this I haveinformed our Consul. The Mor-mons who wanted to see Salt LakeCity so badly, and left home for thatpurpose, have had their curiositysatisfied. Rome of them arc reallynfiaid of the white Mormons, theyeven kneel before the elders. I havehad a great deal of dispute withtome of the white Mormons here, and of couise they are angiy wjlhme. I have made strong demandson them to leturii the Uawaiiausback to Honolulu, but theyflatly refused to do so, that is onereason w iy I telegraphed over toour Consul. The white Mormonsarc about to start up an agriculturalcompany whereby they will makeslaves of the Ilawaiians. I haveadvised the natives never to allowthemselves to be roped in by any ofthese cunning and underhanded do-

ings of the Mormons, and the ma-

jority of them have listened to myadvice. I also advised the few whohave a little land not to sell it in or-

der that they may have an interestin this companyUhat is to be start-ed. The white Mormons intendmaking slaves of the Ilawaiians bybinding them under contracts forthe peiiod of, fifty ycais, which timethey are to remain laboio.t's for thecompany. Those arc the class ofwhite men who will never tell thetruth, but will always lie to suittheir ends. So you had better pub-lish all theso facts and make somestrung arguments on it so all maysee. and satisfy themselves.

Charles K. Slsmc, n wealthy Eng-lishman who has been travelinglliroughoul'thc world almost contin-uously forjycnra, enjoys the singu-lar protniuenco of being the onlyman who Mulshed his breakfast, atthe Depot Hotel. He is a lionhunter of India, nnd sat at the sumotable with Justice Field, nnd di-

rectly opposite him. He had justgot comfortably to work on a b'igmeal when Judge Torry deliveredtlio blow.

Then he saw the glentn of Mar-

shal Neagle's revolver ami (he twoshots, and Terry fall. Ho saw theblood ooze from his wounds intogreat pools on the tloor, almost nthis side, nnd all the awfulness ofthe after-traged- y when Mrs. Terryflung- - herself on her husband'sbreast and with sobs lamented Jusdeath. StlM Mr. Sisme titc'awny.lie finished a very comfortable st,

all the lime the excited throngHying hither and thither, and at lastwalked out like all the rest, withoutpaying his bill. The passengersvoted him the coolest man that everstruck the country, and he was thesubject of much icmark. To acrowd last evening at the Occidental,he said :

"At the first report and Hash

Judce Terry staggered, and whenthe second shot came he reeled andfell. He never spoke a word afterit, and it did look rather forbidding, with the body lying there, to tinishray breakfast, but 1 was hungry.and1 determined to stay till X was done.It wns a very wild scene, with thecries of Mrs. Terry and the extremecoolness of Justice Field. Mrs.Terry shouted time and again for allwho we're Masons to come andavenge her wiongs, she being, asshe said, the daughter of a Mason."

Perhaps nobody in the eating-hous- e

so clearly witnessed the trag-edy as Mr. Sisme, yet to all the re-

porters who thronged about he in-

sisted that he did not see any partof it. He is afi aid that he will becalled as a witness in the case.

The work done by the S.S. Austra-lia on her trip to Honolulu and returnis an excellent showing for the boil-

There wereonly two fair days on the returntrip, the rest being rough withstrong northerly winds, notwith-standing which the steamer madethe distance in 7 days 2 hours, on a

daily average consumption of 41tons" of coal. Against a stronghead wind she made three hundredand seven miles in one day. Inptevtous voyaaes with her old en-

self a great deal to wind and weath-er, and he was seized with rheuma-tism, and his joints soon dwelled upwith, dropsy, and wcru very stiffand painful. Nothing that the doc-

tors could do seemed to reach theseat of the trouble. It so cripplodhim that he could do hardly anywotk, and for the whole of the win-

ter of 1878 and '7!), he had to giveup and take to ins ucil. lie hadbeen nllheted iu this sorry way forthree years, and was getting wornout and discouraged. Besides, hehad spent over Jti.'l for what hecalled "doctor's stuff without theleast benefit. In the Spring heheard of what Mother Scigel's Cura-tive Syrup has done for others andbought a 2s. G'd. bottle of me. Iua few days he sent me word he wasmuch better before he had finishedthe bottle. He then sent to me fora 4s. Gd. bottle, and as I was goingthat way I carried it down to himmyself. On getting to his housewhat was my astonishment and sur.prise to find him out in the gardenweeding au onion bed. I couldhardly believe inr own eyes, andsaid: '

"Yoa ought not to be out here, mnn, it ma' bo the death of you, alter being .laid up all winter withrheumatism and dropsy."

His reply was: ('There is nodanger. The weather is line, .andMother Seigcl's Curative Syrup hasdone for me in a fc,w days what thedoctors could not do in three years.1 think I shall get welj'now."

Ho kept on with the Syrup, andin three weeks he was at work againaud has had no return of the trou-ble for now nearly- - t,en years. Anj'medicine that can do this should beknown all over tho world.

Yours faithfully,(Signed) Uurr.r.T (Jraham,

Of Graham & Son.Ilolloway House, Sunbttry,

Middlesex,June 25th, 1887.
