LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all

the Fridays of Lent (excluding the Solemnity of St. Joseph per Canon 1251).

2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

4. To disregard completely the law of fast an absti-nence is seriously sinful.

5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of volun-tary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a per-formance of works of charity and mercy.

Todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia de carne. Pero el Episcopado Mexica-no ha dispuesto que: “se puede suplir la abstinencia de carne, excepto la del Miércoles de Ceniza y Viernes Santo, por: A) la abstinencia de aquellos alimentos que para

cada uno significan especial agrado, sea por la materia o por el modo de preparación;

B) o por una especial obra de caridad; C) o por una especial obra de piedad; D) o por otro significativo sacrificio voluntario”.

Sujeto de la ley del ayuno y la abstinencia: - Abstinencia de carne: todos los que han cumpli-

do 14 años. EL hecho de tener 60 años o más, no exime de esta ley de abstinencia.

- Ayuno: todos los que han cumplido 18 años, hasta el comienzo de los 60.

Lo más importante al hacer este tipo de practicas es darle sentido verdadero: por una parte someter la vo-luntad para fortalecerla con virtudes como la tem-planza, la sobriedad y la humildad, y por otra, favo-recer el ejercicio de la caridad, pues todos los sacrifi-cios que se realizan deben apuntar a hacer un bien o un servicio al prójimo y a toda la Iglesia. Hacer sacri-ficios y penitencia por costumbre o porque todos lo hacen, no tiene sentido y no favorecen el crecimiento del hombre, que en conclusión es lo que se pretende.

Fast Facts.... In January 2011, the National Center for Education Statistics released the report of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results for Science in grades 4 and 8. According to the results, 50% of Catholic school 4th graders were proficient in science, compared to only 33% of students in the public schools. Likewise, the study showed that 42% of Catholic school 8th graders were proficient in science, compared to 29% of public school students. Upcoming Events...The Jesse White Tumblers will be performing at Holy Family on Thursday, March 24th at 1:00pm. The Jesse White Tumblers was founded to serve as a positive alternative for the children residing in Chicago's public housing communities. The event is open to the public. Come and see the amazing skills that these tumblers perform!

Parish Lenten Mission

A parish Lenten Mission will take place April 6, 7 and 8 2011. The mission will be presented by John Donahue-Grossman and will be in-troduced at the Sunday Masses on April 2 and 3. The mission will begin each night at 7:00 pm. The theme of the mission is “Hope for the Journey”. The topics for each night are “Stories of the Desert”, “Stories of Healing and Grace” and “Stories of Discipleship”. John is thrilled to return to St. Joseph, his home parish. He graduated from St. Jo-seph school in 1979. This promises to be an uplifting and dynamic mission. Think about inviting family, friends and neighbors. All ages are welcome to attend.

CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God's call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risk-ing it all for God's promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scrip-tures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Do not let your to-do list (written or mental) become an idol directing your life. In-stead, ask My Spirit to guide you moment by moment. He will keep you close to Me. FEAST OF FAITH The First Reading Each Sunday, we listen to three scripture readings. The first reading usually comes from the Old Testament. "The New Testament lies hidden in the Old; the Old Testament comes fully to light in the New," we read in the Introduction to the Lectionary. "Christ himself is the center and full-ness of the whole of Scripture" (5). On Sundays, these readings usually have a close connection to the Gospel. In this season of Lent, for example, the Exodus account of the thirst of the Israelites in the desert is paired with the Samaritan woman's encounter with Jesus at the well. Ezekiel's vision of the Lord raising people from their graves is paired with the narrative of Christ raising Lazarus from the dead. The readings are taken from many sources--historical books like Judges, Kings, and the Acts of the Apostles, prophets like Isaiah and Ezekiel, wisdom literature like Proverbs or Eccle-siastes. But no matter its genre, the first reading always ends with the same acclamation: "The word of the Lord." The scriptures are written by human authors who wrote in widely different cul-tural and historical contexts, but these human au-thors are also divine instruments through whom God speaks to us. FIESTA DE LA FE La Liturgia de la Palabra Ésta comienza a partir de la Oración colecta. En las lecturas que se proclaman, "Dios habla a su pueblo, le descubre el misterio de la redención y salvación, y le ofrece el alimento espiritual; y el mismo Cristo, por su palabra, se hace presente en medio de los fieles", (IGMR, 55). La actual estructura de la Liturgia de la Palabra en la que se proclama la primera lectura del Antiguo Testamento (excepto durante la Pas-cua), la segunda lectura del Nuevo Testamento y, posteriormente el Evangelio, responde a la estruc-tura misma de la liturgia en las sinagogas judías que probablemente surgieron durante el destierro (586-539 a.C.), pues eran los lugares indicados para la oración. El Salmo Responsorial, la Homilía, el Credo y las Intercesiones Generales, también son parte de la Liturgia de la Palabra.
