Foreword

Recognizing the importance of livestock sector in day to day life and economy of rural masses of the state, Government of Uttar Pradesh established UP Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya Evam Go Anusandhan Sansthan Mathura with College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry as its main constituent College in 2001. Erstwhile UP College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry Mathura, since its establishment in 1947 has played a very significant role in education and research in the country and has global recognition for its meritorious contribution. In the year 2010, the College of Biotechnology was started in the University. The College of Fishery Science, College of Livestock Products and Technology and College of Animal Industry and Business Management are the other faculties which will introduced in the University in the phased manner. The College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry has well established Departments with state of art laboratories and well qualified & competent young faculty members. Presently there are a total of 85 faculty members in the University including the subject matter specialists of KVK. An effort has been made to compile the faculty profile of all the teaching, research and extension professionals in the University. I appreciate the efforts of Dr. Prabhakar Kumar, Asstt. Prof., Anatomy for this arduous task.

Preface

The College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry was established in 1947 and in 1975, it became a constituent College of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology, Kanpur. With the passage of time, not only the feasible infrastructure but also the laboratories got deprived of the basic facilities and there were human resource and financial constraints too. From 2004‐05 onwards, the faculty strength started dwindling and a stage came when there were only 44 teachers on the roll of College; and with that thin strength, all the affairs of University were managed. Therefore teaching and research had to be compromised with. However, after recruitment of faculty from 2008 onward, the faculty strength started improving. Efforts have been made to recruit the best in the lot and faculty profile is a testimony to the fact that this University is presently endowed with talented, dynamic and young faculty member. We have high hopes from the faculty members for furthering Veterinary education and research in the country par excellence.

The University

Erstwhile U.P. College of Veterinary Science & A.H., Mathura was temporarily started in abandoned army barracks in 1947 to award four years degree of BVSc&AH. This College has the distinction of being the first Veterinary College in the country to start MVSc degree programme in 1956 and later PhD in 1961 different disciplines of veterinary and animal sciences. After establishment of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology Kanpur in 1975, this College was renamed as College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry and it became a constituent College of the newly established agricultural University. UP Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayaya Pashu‐Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya Evam Go Anusandhan Sansthan, Mathura was established by Govt. of UP vide Act. No. 27 of 2001 on 25.10.2001 with the erstwhile U.P. College of Veterinary Science & A.H., Mathura as its main constituent college. Different buildings of Veterinary College, residential complex, hostels, Instructional Livestock Farm Complex including poultry and agriculture farms are spread over a total land area of 782.34 acres in Mathura which was transferred to the erstwhile College from Defence Department of GOI. In addition, University also has 1400 acres agriculture farm at Madhurikund, about 20 km. from the main campus. After establishment of University, in the first phase of development, new buildings of the Administrative Block, College of Biotechnology, College of Livestock Products Technology, College of Fisheries and College of Animal Industry and Business Management, Gymnasium, three hostels for students and residences of various categories were sanctioned and budget for these has been released by Govt. in phased manner. Out of these, buildings of Administrative Block, College of Biotechnology, Gymnasium, two hostels and residences have been completed while rest of the buildings are in final stages of completion. College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry: It is the main constituent College of University and running BVSc&AH, MVSc and PhD degree programmes of five, two and three year durations, respectively. College has Master’s and PhD degree programmes in 16 Departments while the Departments of LPM and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Departments have only MVSc degree programme. Since inception, 3824 students have completed their BVSc & AH degree, 1027MVSc degree and 175 PhD degree from Veterinary College, Mathura.

The College apart from having 18 full fledged teaching Departments, has well established Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex with state of the art imaging‐diagnostic and other laboratory equipments and well‐equipped operation theatres for small and large animal surgery and ICU, and Instructional Livestock farm Complex. All the Departments have almost adequate to sufficient well‐qualified and competent faculty members and sufficient office and laboratory space, and well‐equipped laboratories for imparting hands on training to students on state of the art equipments. In addition, the College also has “Central Instrumentation Laboratory”. College of Biotechnology: The College of Biotechnology was introduced in the University in the year 2010 as second faculty of the University. After identifying four core and some supporting faculty members from College of Veterinary Sciences, two years MSc Biotechnology degree programme was started under self‐finance scheme with the admission of seven students from the academic session 2010‐11 based on the entrance examination. After having signed MOU with Central Institute for Research on Goats, Makhdoom, and with the availability of more competent faculty from CIRG and also Veterinary College, teaching and research facilities were further improved and students were provided best opportunities for undertaking quality research in their areas of interest. All the seven students admitted in first batch have completed their degrees and five students admitted during 2011‐12 and 2012‐13 are continuing their studies. College laboratories have been further strengthened with the addition of more equipments and bioinformatics laboratory. University envisages of starting PhD degree programme in this College in near future. College of Fisheries: As per the recent developments and assurance of UP Govt., University will be starting the College of Fisheries with four year degree programme (BFSc) from the academic session 2013‐14. Adequate fish‐breeding ponds and hatchery facilities have already been created with the financial assistance under RKVY during the years 2010‐12 for fish‐seed production. Building of the College is in almost final stage of completion. Other Colleges: As envisaged in the Act of University, College of Livestock Products Technology and College of Animal Industry and Business Management will also be started in the University in near future in a phased manner to generate trained and competent human resource.
