From the EditorS triving towards excellence in research is an important

mission and a continuous endeavour for our Faculty. In the cover story of this issue of Medical Faculty News, you can read about recent developments at the Faculty’s five Research Centres. The Directors of the Research Centres also share the achievements of colleagues, their vision and future research directions in each centre’s respective field.

In the Dean’s Message, Professor Sum-ping Lee highlights the Faculty’s progress in its strategic networking and collaborations in the areas of research, education and clinical service. In addition to fostering synergism, bringing together diverse expertise, practice, and ethos can spark novel ideas and offer new opportunities.

The photo below was taken in Shanghai, which I visited in June. The pace of development in the Mainland is phenomenal. The vibrancy, the readily perceivable ambition, and the vast institutional investment are striking reminders that we must work hard and be courageous in taking on new challenges, or else we will be left behind in this highly competitive milieu.

We have just had the hottest August in 30 years! It is nice that after the unbearable summer heat we have many exciting developments ahead.

Until next time, happy reading!

From the EditorDean’sMessage

iven the advancement of medical science, rapid globalisation trend and emerging health challenges with increasing global impact, nowadays any modern medical school with a mission to excel in medical education cannot

possibly confine its education, research and patient care within its existing physical boundaries.

The Faculty is privileged to have visionary predecessors who have long realised that any “ivory tower phenotype” will be an antonym to its mission and will only impose restrictions to its own development. With carefully cultivated outreaching efforts, the Faculty is able to attain its sound achievements on the basis of a solid network in teaching, research and clinical service. Apart from our major teaching hospital Queen Mary, we are proud to have an extensive network of public and private hospitals, and professional experts in the public sector and in outside practice, to complement the diverse teaching needs.

Albeit its successful track record, the Faculty is continuously moving forward. In response to the rapid social and economic integration between Hong Kong and Mainland China, particularly in the Pearl River Delta region, the Faculty has strengthened its ties with Mainland institutions in recent years. Close collaborations have been established with renowned medical schools and research institutes in the Mainland, with regard to medical education, student exchange, as well as clinical and basic research. The establishment of State Key Laboratories in emerging infectious diseases and brain and cognitive science are notable examples of such development on the research front.

More recently, the Faculty is in the process of discussing with Mainland authorities and research institutions on an exciting opportunity to collaborate in the area of clinical service and teaching, in the setting of a new hospital in Shenzhen. I see this as an important strategic extension of the Faculty’s outreaching activities. If this comes into fruition, our students will have more learning opportunities and a much expanded exposure to patients and clinical material. Furthermore, this is an invaluable chance to enrich their clinical experience in a different social context. Our Faculty members would also benefit from the rich research resources and collaborative networking.

As a leading medical school in Asia, we also shoulder the responsibility to train future medical and healthcare professionals and to take an active role in enhancing the development of quality healthcare in the Pearl River Delta region. This is indeed a defining moment not just for our Faculty, but for the whole medical community in Hong Kong, to expand beyond its constricting boundaries and to make a very positive and long-lasting impact on the healthcare system of our nation.

Five Years On TheDiscovery TrailCollaboration in scientific research is not

simply an aggregation of knowledge

and expertise. The synergism achieved

through the diverse, yet complementary,

strengths of each team member can lead

to opportunities which could never be

obtained by the parties alone.

Living up to its reputation as a world

leader in biomedical research, in 2004,

the Faculty established five research

centres with the aim of increasing cross-

disciplinary collaboration. Members of

these centres include clinicians and basic

scientists from different departments.

Based on “Strategic Research Areas and

Themes”, the five research centres and their

respective directors are: Centre for Cancer

Research(Professor George SW Tsao,

曹世華); Research Centre of Heart, Brain,

Hormone & Healthy Aging(Professor

Karen SL Lam, 林小玲); Research Centre

of Infection & Immunology(Professor

KY Yuen, 袁國勇), Public Health Research

Centre(Professor TH Lam, 林大慶), and

the Centre of Reproduction, Development

& Growth(Professor PC Ho, 何柏松).

Five years after establishment, the

directors discuss their respective centre’s

aims, achievements and future direction.

Centre for Cancer Research

Joining Forces to Tackle the Big C“ ancer research is a big field,” said Professor George

Tsao. “In the past, every department had its own cancer research programme which inevitably led to

competition and difficulty in sharing resources or talent.” A major aim in setting up the Centre for Cancer Research was to promote inter-departmental collaborations, multi-disciplinary studies and shared use of resources and expertises in the Faculty. By identifying mutual interests, cancer researchers from different disciplines in the Faculty could be teamed up to work together to tackle key issues in cancer. Professor Tsao also hopes that the Centre can serve as the convening platform for cancer research at the University.

By integrating clinical, basic and translational research programmes, the Centre works towards the development of cancer prevention, detection and treatment; and seeks to establish itself as a global leader in the field of cancer research. The cancer research initiatives at the Faculty are mainly in the following areas:

• cancer stem cells;• cancer imaging and detection;• genetics, genomics and epigenetic study of cancers; • cancer cell signalling;• molecular targeted therapies; • infection, inflammation and cancer.

The Centre has also established a large-scale tissue bank to collect samples to facilitate basic scientific research and identification of novel tumour markers for clinical applications.

In addition to internal collaboration, Professor Tsao believes that the Centre can serve as a platform for international collaboration and communication. “In the past, no single department could represent cancer research at the University alone. However, with the establishment of the Centre for Cancer Research, we can effectively interact with other cancer research institutes worldwide and improve our networking and collaboration with other researchers and stake-holders.” In recent years, the Centre has received even greater recognition on the global stage with its annual hosting of the esteemed Hong Kong International Cancer Congress at the Faculty.

Cancer will continue to be a dominant challenge to the community as a cause of morbidity and mortality. The Centre aims to establish strong research programmes to combat cancers, especially those affecting this part of the world.

A s life expectancy increases, issues revolving around aging will constitute a huge challenge to medicine and healthcare. “With our rapidly aging population, our

vision is to promote research into healthy aging,” Professor Karen Lam said. “We hope to reduce suffering caused by age-related diseases, and thereby improve quality of life. We must remain healthy as we age. What is the point of achieving longevity alone if there is poor quality of life?”

The Centre aims to promote interdisciplinary research by drawing together investigators with interest and expertise in healthy aging, particularly related to problems that involve the cardiovascular, neurological and endocrine systems, Professor Lam explained. “The integration of basic and clinical research is also of particular importance, to ensure that our research will be of clinical benefit,” she said.

The Research Centre of Heart, Brain, Hormone & Healthy Aging (HBHA) consists of members from 16 departments, focusing on four major research directions:

• cell therapy and tissue engineering;• degeneration and regeneration;• diabetes and metabolic syndrome; • vascular biology.

Since its inauguration, the Centre has established core facilities for human stem cell culture and differentiation, multiplex biomarker profiling, in vivo and in vitro research on hypoxia, and the automated monitoring of metabolism and physical activities of laboratory animals. It has also been successful in translational and applied research, resulting in the filing of 10 provisional US patents in recent years.

The Centre offers training opportunities and postgraduate education, in both laboratory-based research and clinical medicine, on aging-related diseases. In terms of interacting with the professional community, HBHA organises international symposia on various topics related to aging. In view of the increasing importance of regenerative medicine, the Centre in recent years has also held regular international workshops on human stem cell research. By bringing worldwide experts to Hong Kong, Professor Lam hopes to provide better training for local researchers and further strengthen international collaboration on stem cell research.

T he Faculty is internationally recognised for its research strength in infection and immunology. However, expertise is not restr icted to the Department of

Microbiology. There are talents in other departments of the Faculty that conduct related research, such as projects on influenza and vaccine development.

Professor KY Yuen strongly believes that “interdisciplinary research is the way forward” and there is an urgent need for greater collaboration across different departments and disciplines, including microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, animal modelling, among others. “One needs perspectives from every

discipline for the best results – and that’s the rationale for running our research centre.”

To further facilitate cross-department and multi-disciplinary collaboration, the Centre has developed four resource units openly available to all interested investigators. These units are equipped with cutting-edge technology and facilities, each managed by its own dedicated team cons is t ing of leading researchers specialising in their respective fields. They comprise: the immunological platform; P3 laboratory robotic drug screening; chemical genetics; and functional genomics. All units are available to all investigators in need of such facilities or staff expertise, within or outside the university.

The Research Centre of Infection & Immunology focuses on studying the interaction between microorganisms and the host defence system. The study of the pathogenesis, cell biology and the resulting immunological response after interaction between pathogens and host cells (such as development of cancer or autoimmune diseases) constitutes an important part of the Centre.

Key areas of current research include the study of the influenza virus and discovery of new microbes. For example, the Centre has identified various novel strains of coronavirus and, in honour of Hong Kong, the renowned bacterium Laribacter hongkongensis.

With pandemic infections posing a major threat, the Centre as a strategic arm of the Faculty and the University will continue to build its leadership role in the identification and surveillance of emerging infections in Asia.

T he founding of the Public Health Research Centre has been a cornerstone for the development of public health at HKU,” said Professor TH Lam. “With recent

events such as the SARS pandemic, avian and swine influenza, and increasing awareness of the burden of non-communicable diseases, the importance of public health is now being recognised more than ever. Everyone needs to know about public health, not just doctors.” Th e Pu b l i c H e a l t h R e s e a rc h Ce n t re i s c o m m i t te d to multidisciplinary research with the aim of controlling the double disease burden from both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Four key research sub-themes have been established:

• epidemiology and control of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards; • lifestyle, lifecourse and molecular determinants of chronic conditions; • health services, systems and policy research; • behavioural medicine and well-being.

The Centre works in collaboration with other research centres, especially in relation to the first two themes, focusing on gene-environment interaction in chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and dementia, and on influenza.

Recent achievements include research projects on air pollution, tobacco control and influenza; establishment of Children of 1997 Hong Kong Birth Cohort and the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study; and the citywide research project entitled “FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society”. The FAMILY project, funded by a donation of HK$250 million by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, involves (a) the prospective follow-up of 20,000 households; (b) intervention projects with NGO partners and (c) public education and health communication with the objectives to promote family health, happiness and harmony (3Hs). The Centre has been very successful in obtaining large grants from US CDC and NIH and Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Diseases to study influenza in the community.

In terms of public and medical education, Professor Lam hopes the Centre can become a leading centre for public health training and a voice for public health advocacy, leading the way to protect the community from preventable health threats and striving to assure community-based health promotion. The Public Health Research Centre has also laid down the groundwork for the foundation of the School of Public Health, bringing with it the highly popular Master of Public Health programme as well as further strengthening its existing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Centre of Reproduction, Development & Growth

Exploring the Origins of Life

O ur understanding of the origin of life relies heavily on our understanding and application of knowledge in reproductive biology. The Centre of Reproduction,

Development & Growth aims to facilitate collaboration in the areas of reproduction, development and growth. The Centre mainly focuses on the following research directions:

• reproduction: the way to a healthy child;• genetics of disorders;• developmental and functional genomics; • stem cells and regenerative medicine.

“As a medical school, it is important that our research ultimately translates into helping our patients and the community,” said Professor PC Ho. “One of the most difficult aspects is the collaboration between scientists and clinicians. Basic scientific research has a major impact on clinical practice, but clinical acumen is required before one can design and conduct meaningful clinical trials.

“Stem cell research is now at the frontier of scientific research,” Professor Ho added. “We wish to harness the synergism between our different research centres, working together towards research excellence and the benefit of the community.” The Centre will also strengthen its work on genetics of disorders and structural biology by recruiting a clinical geneticist and a structural biologist.

In addition, the Centre offers education opportunities through several multidisciplinary research programmes and lectures. It also promotes community awareness through public seminars, exhibit ions, and other educational initiatives.

Core research facilities, such as the chicken embryo model system, 3D Micro CT and transgenic core facilities, are openly available to all interested investigators in the Faculty. As for the future, Professor Ho said, “We must continue to build up inter-centre, inter-faculty and even inter-institutional collaborations to enhance both basic and clinical research.”

Spotlight

urses at the Forefront of Knowledge

T he Depar tment of Nursing Studies has experienced tremendous growth in the numbers of students and teaching staff as well as the complexity and variety of its programmes

since it was established in 1995. From 42 undergraduate students at the outset, the Department has increased to over 1,000 today. These students are enrolled in four degree courses at different academic levels – the Pre-registration Bachelor of Nursing (Honours), Post-registration Bachelor of Nursing, Master of Nursing, Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy programmes – and the Department has become one of the major institutions in Hong Kong for training nursing professionals.

As a founding member and the current Head of Department, Professor Sophia SC Chan (陳肇始)has witnessed the growth of nursing education at HKU. She told Medical Faculty News about the Department’s recent developments and achievements in education, training, research, community outreach, and international partnerships.

Educating Nursing Practitioners and Building Nursing ScienceIn response to the growing needs of the community and young people’s interest in nursing as a career, the Department currently admits over 230 undergraduate and postgraduate students each year. Compared with other institutions, Professor Chan said that the nursing curriculum at HKU provides more research opportunities and puts emphasis on grooming students with a “scholarly and evidence-based approach” to the practice of nursing care.

The Department’s research work is also growing rapidly, with many of its projects receiving competitive research awards from local and international organisations. “We endeavour to create the best research environment, to build a strategic research plan and to provide support to enhance our academics’ research capacity,” Professor Chan said. “In the 2006 Research Assessment Exercise, we scored the highest among university nursing schools in Hong Kong. This really lifted us!”

Transferring Knowledge to CommunitiesNowadays, the Department’s research mainly focuses on smoking cessation, domestic violence, woman and child health, and elderly healthcare and promotion. Professor Chan expects these areas to be extended with the arrival of new staff in the future. She emphasised that research is not only the responsibility of an academic but also a way to enhance public healthcare standards. Research programmes such as the “Youth Quit Line” and “Parenting Programme” are good examples of the integration of research and community service.

Along with outreach to the public, the Department contributes to the professional community by bringing nursing practitioners together to interact and exchange ideas and experiences. The Department held its first Nursing Symposium on its 10th Anniversary in 2005. In 2006, the Department of Surgery invited the Department to co-organise the 50th Hong Kong Surgical Forum cum 1st Hong Kong Nursing Forum. Since then, the HK Nursing Forum has become an annual signature scientific event of the Department.

International PartnershipsIn 2000, the Department set up a committee to build its international profile. It has gone on to reach agreements with top nursing schools worldwide on research collaboration and student exchange. Professor Chan has generated further cooperation opportunities with leading nursing schools through the annual exchanges with heads of nursing in the Universitas 21 network.

Recently, the Department’s efforts in cross-level nurse training were recognised by the Temasek Foundation, a philanthropic organisation from Singapore. The Foundation will support a two-year “Train the Trainer” project, which aims at enhancing the professional knowledge and skills of nurse educators, nurse managers and community nurses in Guangdong Province. “This is the first time the Foundation has sponsored an institution outside Singapore,” Professor Chan said. “It is an honour for the Department to be its first offshore partner. We hope the project will have a positive impact on nursing and healthcare services in China.” The Temasek project symbolises the Department’s continuing contribution to healthcare services in China.

Counting Down to 15th AnniversaryWith its Crystal Jubilee next year, the Department is planning to scale new heights through its innovative research and unique education programmes. Professor Chan said the Department would like to add to its staff ’s capacity to submit competitive research projects when contending for external grants. “We wish to showcase our research achievements at the 4th Nursing Forum, which will be an exciting international conference to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of the Department.

“On the education front, we will be revamping and improving our existing curricula. We have just launched two new programmes in 2009; a professional doctoral programme, the Doctor of Nursing, and extending the existing Bachelor of Nursing (PT) programme to enrolled nurses. In addition, to enrich our students’ whole-person development and overseas exposure, we are soliciting more resources to support and expand our student exchange programme.”

The Department aspires to become a School of Nursing eventually. “This would keep our branding in line with other nursing institutions globally and is a recognition of our development and achievements over the past years,” she said.

P rofessor Sir Harry Fang passed away in Hong Kong on August 24, 2009, at the age of 87. Alumni, staff and members of the Medical Faculty were all deeply saddened

by the passing of Sir Harry, an alumnus, colleague, outstanding mentor, reformer, and a world-renowned pioneer of rehabilitation and voluntary service in the community.

The legendary life of Sir Harry is a story filled with enthusiasm and achievements. He completed his medical degree at HKU in 1949 and throughout his life maintained close connections with his alma mater. Sir Harry played an indispensable role in the establishment of the specialty of Orthopaedic Surgery at HKU in the 1950s, and was appointed as honorary faculty of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology since 1958. The University conferred a Doctor of Laws honoris causa degree on Sir Harry in 1977. He was also a Founding Voting Member of the HKU Foundation and a member of its Board of Directors since its inception in 1996.

Sir Harry’s abiding concern for the human condition was a gift to the world of rehabilitation. Together with his counterparts, he established the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation in 1959 and his pioneering endeavours will continue to have a lasting impact. Sir Harry lived a life filled with compassion and empathy for others, alleviating suffering and adding to the sum of human happiness. Esteemed and revered by his students, colleagues and friends, this kind, caring, gentle man will be sadly missed and long remembered.
