Happy New Year!

It’s the time of the year to reflect on what has been

achieved in the past 12 months and to think about

the future. In line with this, we have prepared a short,

statistical overview to give readers an idea of the Faculty’s

extensive educational and research activities in 2009.

Indeed, a lot has been done! Don’t miss the “Dean’s

Message” either, in which Professor SP Lee reviews the

important programmes launched by the Faculty in the

past year and briefs us on the exciting projects ahead.

Speaking about the future, what could be more fitting

than to hear from our new University Council Chairman

Dr the Honourable CH Leong. We also have an article by

Professor David Wong introducing us to the youthful and

vibrant Eye Institute.

These are just a few of the goodies inside this issue. Until

next time, happy reading!

From the EditorDean’sMessage

sense of solidarity is the powerhouse that fuels the Faculty’s future success. This reflection slipped to my mind when I looked back on some major endeavours of the Faculty in the past year. Only with a sense of solidarity among Faculty members,

which embodies a common feeling of unity with friendship and affection, could these endeavours come to fruition.

The Year 2009 saw the successful launch of the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme. The programme was welcomed by local and international applicants, judging from the large number of applications received and the good intake grades. Apart from the hard work of colleagues from the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy who spearheaded the programme from conception to implementation, the success of the programme is a result of concerted efforts of many other departments and units of the whole Faculty, and the support and guidance from our colleagues in the profession and industry, who have worked together with us to bring this programme into reality.

On the research front, we also witnessed the fruit of Faculty members’ collaborations. In September 2009, our research excellence in nasopharyngeal cancer was recognised by the University Grants Committee as an Area of Excellence. Without any pomposity and fanfare, we launched our research programme in structural biology; and in November, we introduced the strategic research theme on stem cell and regenerative medicine to capitalise on the promising prospect of these fast-growing biomedical research areas. These developments are the outcomes of synergised efforts among Faculty members from different disciplines, who have the common objective of fighting and preventing diseases and enhancing people’s health.

Another interesting yet challenging development has been the emergence of the Binhai Hospital project. The project of developing Binhai Hospital in Shenzhen as a teaching hospital of HKU is truly historical, offering us exceptional opportunities to boost our research capacity substantially, to broaden our clinical service and teaching activities beyond our current physical boundary, and to contribute to the healthcare reform of China. I understand that this will be an extremely enormous and challenging project, and I have to count on your full support to make it a success. I have gained much confidence after the Faculty retreat held in Shenzhen in mid-November, during which we visited the hospital site and we discussed the road maps in this project. I was deeply impressed by Faculty members’ enthusiasm, determination, and optimism that we can all work together to turn this project into one of the Faculty’s most important milestones.

What stands behind all these endeavours, and many other successful undertakings, is a sense of solidarity among members of the Faculty. Standing on this strong foundation, I see a bright future for this vibrant Faculty.

May I wish all of you a healthy, joyous and prosperous 2010.

Professor SP LeeDean of Medicine

What stands behind all these

endeavours, and many

other successful undertakings, is a sense of

solidarity among members of the

Faculty.

A n honour, an exceptional opportunity to further serve his alma mater, and another milestone in his career is how Dr CH Leong(梁智鴻)describes his role as the newly installed University Council Chairman. Dr Leong graduated from this medical school in 1962, worked

in the Department of Surgery from 1964 to 1978, and has been an elected Member of the University Council since 2004. He assumed the chairmanship on November 7, 2009.

exciting Developments aheadIn an interview with Medical Faculty News, Dr Leong foresaw many opportunities as well as challenges as the University prepares for Hong Kong’s education reforms, including the introduction of a four-year undergraduate degree system for most subjects in 2012 rather than the current three years. For medical students, this will mean a move from a five-year programme to six years.

“I hope with the implementation of the new curriculum, students will have more time to attend general education courses, to know more about their surroundings and the world,” said Dr Leong. “When I was a medical student, I spent all my time studying and training for a medical career. With an extra year, medical students should be able to join more activities on the main campus and learn beyond the profession.”

Given that under the new academic structure HKU will have more students, capacity building will be a great challenge, Dr Leong pointed out. To help in this regard, the University’s new centennial campus is due to be completed in 2011/12. “We need space to accommodate more students and staff, and additional learning and research activities,” he said. “That’s why the western expansion is so important.”

Regarding HKU’s strategic development, Dr Leong appeared particularly excited about the University’s expansion plan in Shenzhen. “Among our key projects in Mainland China, the Shenzhen Binhai Hospital is nearest to coming on stream. The hospital is expected to be in operation in 2011, which will serve as an extended medical campus of HKU and an exemplary model for other healthcare establishments in the region, contributing to the healthcare reform of China.”

He hoped that a greater presence in Mainland China would help HKU to be recognised as a top university in China and to tap research resources offered by the central government. More research output would also assist HKU’s aspiration to rise even higher among world-renowned universities.

Going Global In addition, Dr Leong emphasised the increasing importance of internationalisation for tertiary education and urged the government to relax admission requirements for such students. “Internationalisation would definitely help local students to develop global perspectives and understand different cultures. It is also important for students to establish a wide network before they graduate.”

Centenary Bonding On the University’s approaching centenary celebrations in 2011, Dr Leong saw it an invaluable opportunity for strengthening bonds between the University and alumni from different sectors as well as consolidating their support.

Medical role Model Dr Leong has led an illustrious public service career and is a role model for many medical students and graduates given his academic achievements, dedication and passion for serving the community. “Doctors are professionals that people can trust,” he said. “By giving medical consultations, doctors can also meet people from all walks of life and understand their needs. There is thus great potential for engaging in public affairs. I hope our medical students can play a more active role in community matters.” Dr Leong also encouraged students to take part in basic research, which is the driving force behind medical and social progress and advancing the well-being of mankind.

I n Hong Kong, ophthalmology was first taught in 1993 to medical students of both The University of Hong Kong

(HKU) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) under the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at CUHK. It was not until 2003 that HKU established the Eye Institute, and only in 2006 that the University was finally able to chart its own course in the field.

Th i s i s a ve r y recent beginn ing fo r a branch of medicine that has seen such r a p i d a d v a n c e m e n t i n t h e p a s t t w o decades. However, under the leadership o f P r o f e s s o r D a v i d Wo n g (黃世雄), A lber t B ing- Ching Young Professor in Ophthalmology and Director of the Eye Institute, the Institute has not only made u p fo r l o s t t i m e b u t q u i c k l y b e c o m e a renowned centre for research, diagnosis and treatment.

“Under the original joint arrangement with CUHK, it was hard for ophthalmology to develop at HKU,” Professor Wong explained. “The discipline couldn’t take advantage of working with other specialties at HKU or

benefit from research conducted by the rest of the University. By 2006, it had been recognised it would be more desirable for the two universities to have the freedom to develop ophthalmology independently.” A memorandum of understanding was therefore signed giving each university the freedom to develop ophthalmology independently. This was viewed as a positive move as it would give student choice and engender healthy competition.

Education and Research At the Eye Institute, medical education comprises an intensive, small-group, tutorial-based programme, clinical attachments, and the annual “Fundoscopy Challenge” in which students compete against doctors. “The difficulty for students is to know what they do not know,” Professor Wong said. “I believe it is more important to give students the right questions, not the answers.”

The Institute also offers both professional and postgraduate training, with opportunities for exchanges abroad. Annually since 2008, the Institute has been sending selected postgraduate students for training at the University of Liverpool in the UK.

“Neuroscience research had always existed at the University,” Professor Wong noted. “It was just not connected with the eye. The Eye Institute can serve as a research group that connects and taps into existing resources at HKU. Some of our current main research themes include neuroprotection, stem cell research and the development of novel bioengineering devices.”

“The Institute has gained tremendous support from the Faculty and the University, putting us in an excellent position to build on success. For instance, we have recently obtained the first optical coherence tomography in South-East Asia. Despite starting almost from scratch, we are no longer here to play catch-up, but to leap-frog.”

Service to the Public Cataract and diabetic retinopathy are the leading causes of blindness in Hong Kong. For cataract surgery, patients may have to wait up to five years for an operation on one eye, and another five years for the second. In response to this, the Institute has raised HK$37 million to set up two “eye factories” (eye centres providing service sessions) with the Hospital

Academic Team

Vision of the FutureThe University of Hong Kong had a relatively late start in ophthalmology but its pioneering work since then has already gained renown locally and internationally. Director of the Eye Institute Professor David Wong talks to Medical Faculty News about how this branch of medicine has flourished at the University and his far-sighted plans for further development.

Authority to hasten the pace of surgery for cataracts.

“Effectively, the Institute is helping to add a further 5,000 cataract surgeries per year,” Professor Wong said, “and we will be providing teaching for doctors and nurses to perform these high-volume surgeries.”

In addition, the Institute is creating innovative ways to tackle the increasing problem of diabetic eye disease in Hong Kong. “A lot of money and time has been spent trying to mend things that are far too broken to repair,” Professor Wong said. “To address this, we have introduced systematic screening for diabetic retinopathy, starting with Queen Mary Hospital. In collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine, we have been phoning and offering screening for primary care patients who have never been examined by an ophthalmologist before. Over 20% of these patients needed to be sent to

hospital. The Institute is currently proposing to screen all primary care patients on Hong Kong Island.”

Exciting look into the FutureCombining the eye’s transparency as an organ and the rapidly evolv ing era of telemedicine, Professor Wong explained that most of the pathology within the eye can be photographed and the images easily transmitted. This means the Institute can now help to diagnose both public and private sector patients from a distant location. “Patients can attend their own clinics, be photographed, and have the images sent to our Cyberport clinic. We can then diagnose the disease and send the reports back to patients’ own doctors,” he said.

The Institute’s capacity as a reading centre and the advancement of telemedicine will also facilitate screening for other diseases – age-related macular degeneration, for example.

This forms a key future strategy for the Institute.

“Our current and future projects coincide with the Vision 20/20 Project (a WHO global initiative), and our aim is to reduce preventable blindness in Hong Kong,” Professor Wong said. “By taking up these initiatives, HKU and the Eye Institute hope to work together with optometrists, the Hong Kong Society for the Blind, schools for the visually impaired, relevant non-governmental organisations and other professionals in order to make the most of our achievements thus far and to set strategies and targets for reducing the burden of preventable blindness in Hong Kong by 2020.”

Health Exhibition 2009: Urban Operations

The annual Health Exhibition organised by the Medical Society

took place at the Olympian City shopping mall from September

12-18 and at Tuen Mun Town Hall from September 19-20, 2009. The

theme was “Urban Operations”.

The exhibition, first launched in 1987, is a major project run by

students in the Medical Faculty to raise public awareness of health

issues. The 2009 exhibition, the 23rd consecutive staging of the event,

focused on common city ailments such as gastroesophageal reflux

disease, myopia, and osteoporosis. The target audience ranged from

young people and housewives to workers and the elderly.

Basic knowledge of health problems that often affect these groups,

including disease pathology, prevention and treatment, were

creatively presented through student-designed cartoons. A poster

display, health checks, counselling, talks and game booths were also

organised.

The exh ib i t ion ga ined the fu l l

support of broadcaster TVB, with Miss

Hong Kong 2009 and TVB artists in

attendance at the opening ceremony

on September 12 at O lympian

City. This greatly enhanced media

coverage and the impact of the

whole event. Around 5,500 visitors in

total visited the exhibition.

On November 28, 2009, a team of medical, nursing and pharmacy first-year

students visited Fu Tung Estate in Tung Chung to conduct health checks.

These included measuring body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and blood glucose

levels, and health counselling. The service attracted 185 estate residents.

85 Years of Caduceus

Look out for 85 Years of Caduceus, the 85th anniversary edition

of the venerable student medical publication. With a history

of more than eight decades, Caduceus is one of the oldest student

publications in Hong Kong. Caduceus provides a great way to study

the medical history of Hong Kong, providing more than a glimpse

of our changing society through its record of the lives of medical

students and important events in the local medical community. It

is also fun to browse through old editions to understand how our

predecessors learned and practised medicine. Along the way, there

may be encounters with interesting “ancient” diseases such as beri

beri and the chance to trace the early steps of giants such as Dr Li

Shu Fan. To request an anniversary copy or make enquiries, write to:
