Scarce selection…

Australia’s rarest florin!

Turning 50?

Last George VI coins!

Scarce, important, and yet still remarkably affordable, this 100-year-old set represents the second annual coinage issue of King George V. Presented within an

A fine way to mark an 80th birthday or anniversary, the 1932 George V Year Set is also crucial to serious collectors – due to the inclusion of Australia’s lowest mintage 2/! Set

Know someone who is? Well, whether for yourself or as a gift for another, the 1962 Elizabeth II Year Set is the perfect way to celebrate a 50th birthday. Housed within

An ideal gift for a 60th birthday or anniversary, this set features all six denominations struck in 1952 – the VERY LAST Australian coinage issued during the reign of King George VI!

informative, attractive pack, and grading from Good to Very Good, this early predecimal set is headlined by the scarce, low-mintage 1912 3d, 1/- and 2/-, united with 1/2d, 1d & 6d.

in a pack with the 1/2d & 1d – the only other coins struck in 1932 – the sought after 1932 2/- had a mintage of 188,000, and is THE key to the 1910-63 Florin Series.

an informative, ready-to-wrap pack, each set features the Melbourne Mint 3d, 6d, 1/- & 2/-, united with the Perth Mint 1/2d & 1d – with all six coins in pristine Uncirculated quality.

Graded Very Fine, the set includes the 1/2d, 1d, 3d, 1/- and 2/- united with the scarce, highest cataloguing George VI 6d – set within an informative pack.

Struck at the Sydney & Melbourne Mints, the 1922 coinage issue was highlighted by 6d (tiny mintage 1.49m – considered scarce) united with 2/-, 1/-, 3d, 1d & 1/2d – in VG.

Comprising the George VI 1942 1/2d, 1d, 3d, 6d, 1/- & 2/- – all in Very Fine – this WWII era set is a splendid way for the septuagenarian to celebrate that 70th milestone.

Featuring the 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c & 50c, the 1972 6-coin set is one of the scarcest early annual decimal coin issues, and tough-to-find in Uncirculated quality – as here!

Headlined by the 1982 Commonwealth Games 50c, the Unc 1982 Year Set includes the 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c and 20c in an informative pack. Perfect 30th birthday or anniversary gift!

Including the not-issued-for-circulation Barcelona $1 (catalogue value A$75), the 1992 Mint Set also features the 5c, 10c, 50c & $2 – PLUS not-issued-for-circulation 1992 20c!

Celebrating the Year of the Outback, and a memorable keepsake of a 10th anniversary or birthday, the 6-coin 2002 Mint Set (5c-$2) features the unique Outback $1 & 50c.

Struck exactly a century ago at Australia’s three Mints, the Complete George V 1912 Gold Sovereign Trio forms a most prestigious acquisition for any collector.

Physical evidence of Australia’s golden heritage, George V sovereigns are scarce in decent grade – especially pre-WWI sovereigns.

Before the economic collapse triggered by WWI,

sovereigns were genuine circulation coins, meaning that a greater percentage of the low-mintage pre-war issues are well worn from day-to-day use.

Considering the difficulty in obtaining pre-WWI sovereigns in better condition, the chance to secure the 1912 Sovereign Trio in premium grade gVF to gEF deserves serious consideration. Comprising a 1912 sovereign from each

of the Melbourne, Sydney and Perth Mints, each set is beautifully presented within a timber case.

and $1 Wheat coins not issued for circulation and not found in the 2012 Proof & Mint Sets, these sets are vital to those keen to preserve a complete collection. Defined by strictly limited availability, with

just 40,000 BU and 25,000 Proof sets issued, each Australian legal tender collection is housed in a RAM pack.

RAM SPARKS GOLD RUSH!

As the first set in the 1966-2012 Proof Set Series to feature a selectively gold-plated coin, it will be no surprise that initial demand for the 2012 Proof Set has been

huge.

A spectacular example of the latest in modern minting,

the fully struck-up Australian

Coat of Arms 50c design instantly catches the eye

precisely finished with gold. United with the 5c, 10c, 20c, $1 and $2 in a leather wallet,

this stunning 50c type has been the driving force behind the fierce demand for the 2012 Proof Set – and will be the key to the long-term potential of the first Proof Set with a pre-determined mintage. When contemplating that potential, one must consider the fate of the only other Proof Set featuring a 50c enhanced with a special treatment – the 2000 Proof Set. That set had a mintage of 64,904 – nearly 15,000 more than the maximum 50,000-set mintage of the 2012 Proof Set – and is now valued at A$300+!

The 1925S – flawless yet affordable!

Astonishingly

affordable considering

the utterly flawless

quality, we are

delighted to offer

the 1925S Sovereign

in glistening Choice

Uncirculated – at just

A$695 apiece!

Struck exactly 87 years

ago at the Sydney

branch of Britain’s Royal

Mint, and undeniably

scarce in top grade,

the 1925S

Sovereign

represents

a unique

opportunity for

collectors. The

penultimate date in

the 1855-1926 Sydney

Mint series, with the

Mint closing its doors

in 1926, the 1925S

is the ONLY 1920s

Sydney Mint Sovereign

that collectors can

realistically expect to

add to their collection.

As a result of the

global economic crisis

triggered by WWI, the

use of sovereigns as

circulating currency

ceased, and from the

1920s on, the coin was

chiefly employed in

international commercial

transactions. The

Sydney Mint, in

particular, converted

a huge, if unknown,

number of sovereigns to

bullion in the 1920s, and

all dates bar the 1925S

are extremely rare and

very expensive. With

the 1920S worth

A$1,100,000 in

Choice Unc, 1921S

at A$5,800, 1922S

at A$65,000, 1923S

at A$45,000, 1924S at

A$5,600 and the 1926S

valued at A$69,500, the

1925S represents your

big chance to secure

a high-grade Sydney

Mint Sovereign from the

Roaring 20s.

As good as

the day they were

struck, the 1925S is a

prime acquisition in the

breathtaking state of

preservation seen here.

Simply astounding value

at just A$695 apiece,

each Choice Unc 1925S

is housed in a lavish

timber case, complete

with a Certificate of

Authenticity backing

both the composition

and the grade.

The Sydney Mint Sovereign – in aUnc!Struck at Australia’s first official Mint, the 1857-70 Sydney Mint Sovereign is unquestionably one of Australia’s most important coin types. Tangible evidence of Australia’s Gold Rush heritage, all dates from Australia’s first sovereign series are highly sought after – especially when found in superb about Uncirculated condition!

Underpinned by sharp designs and a lovely, original full mint bloom, the Sydney Mint Sovereigns offered here have been officially graded by the USA’s Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) from AU53 to AU58 – the equivalent of aUnc. A leader in independent, 3rd party coin verification, PCGS use the exhaustive Sheldon

Scale with which to grade coins. Indeed, although the 1864,

1866, 1867, 1868 and final date 1870 Sydney Mint Sovereigns are all in aUnc quality, the tiny differences in the minimal wear apparent in each has led to a 5-point spread on the scale – testimony to the meticulousness of PCGS’ assessment of every coin placed in

its care.

With the coins before you, official verification

is hardly necessary. At a single glance, the virtually faultless state of preservation is immediately apparent. An irresistible opportunity to own a premium grade example of one of Australia’s most historic, most desirable types, we have just a few of these exceptionally pretty coins in stock.

Australia under siege…Unlike WWI, Australians felt a real fear of invasion in WWII – a fear intensified by

the bombing raids inflicted by the Japanese on Australia in the early days of the war.

Throughout 1942 and 1943, the Japanese

bombarded many targets on Australia’s northern and

eastern

coastlines, with the midget submarine attacks on Sydney and the air raids on Darwin the most famous. To mark the 70th anniversary of these attacks, the RAM has issued a unique 3-coin set – each comprising a 50c and two 20c types. Sure to interest those fascinated by our rich military heritage,

this poignant, important set is also a must-have for traditional decimal collectors. With the three Australian legal tender types not to be issued for circulation, this set is crucial to the many people desperate to maintain a complete collection.

An affordable acquisition at just A$25.50, the 2012 50c & 20c Shores Under Siege BU 3-Coin Set is housed in a RAM card created in the format of a WWII telegraph.

Depicting a sentry standing on a gun turret and an air raid shelter respectively, the two 20c types are united with a dramatic 50c illustrating the Australian sites bombed by the Japanese during the darkest days of WWII

Comprising four examples of this one-year-only 25mm Australian legal tender type – the C Mintmark and S, M and B Privymark coins – the 2012 $1 Wheat Sheaf Al-Br Mintmark/Privymark BU Set is obviously a vital acquisition for Mintmark Series collectors. Also a must-have for those who have secured the 2012 Fields of Gold 2-Coin BU Set, this value-for-money presentation is perhaps even more attractive to

premier annual silver issue…‘The familiar becomes the extraordinary…’A fine addition to the Royal Australian Mint’s premier annual silver series, the new 2012 Silver Proof Set represents an irresistible opportunity for Downies clients to secure examples of Australia’s beloved decimal coin types struck to the highest quality from pure precious metal.

Exquisite Proof quality…Highlighted by flawless quality, impeccable presentation and a worldwide mintage of just 5,000, the 2012 Silver Proof Set encompasses an example of each of Australia’s six circulating coin types from the 5c to the $2. Featuring the traditional motif for its denomination, each .999 silver Proof found in this breathtaking new release is powerful evidence of the minter’s craft. Using specially prepared dies, the RAM has created coins that literally sparkle with quality, giving extraordinary,

unparalleled depth and detail to designs that are familiar to all Australians.

A sumptuous, exclusive presentation…A fitting standard of presentation for such a prestigious Australian legal tender set, this highly desirable 6-coin collection is beautifully presented within an official RAM timber case. An undeniably eye-catching presentation, with the plush black surrounds providing a dramatic contrast with the entrancing lustre of the pure silver, each case also features an

individually numbered plaque beneath the handcrafted timber lid. Providing further official confirmation of the mintage of 5,000, the set includes a Certificate of Authenticity bearing the same serial number as the plaque.

A prestigious acquisition…A prestigious acquisition for any collector, and a must-have for those who own any of its seldom seen predecessors, the 2012 Silver Proof Set represents Australian numismatics at its best.

■ Exclusive! Worldwide mintage restricted to just 5,000 sets

and 50c – all struck to the most rigorous Proof standard.

Mintage 20,000 – sell-out certain…At first glance, the mintage of 20,000 – four times the mintage of the RAM’s 2012 Silver Proof Set – may seem generous. That view, however, fails to take into account the sheer quality, inspiring originality and tremendous collector value of Canada’s first ever Silver Proof Set. Indeed, given the expected

local and

international interest in this unprecedented release, the Mint could have issued 50,000 sets and the mintage would still be devastated by demand.

A limited window of opportunity…Although Downies status as official distributor for the Royal Canadian Mint has guaranteed us a piece of the action, anticipated demand for this groundbreaking release means that our allocation has been tightly restricted.

With little chance of securing more stock, we cannot emphasise strongly enough the need for immediate action.

From paper to polymer – the journey begins…

Marking a crucial juncture in Australian currency history, the Fraser/Cole signature combination played

a key role in the final days of Australian paper banknotes before the onset of the polymer revolution.

Despite various controversies at the time, the success of Australia’s first polymer note – the Bicentennial $10 – ensured that the nation’s conversion from paper to polymer proceeded relatively swiftly. The $5 and $10 were the first paper notes consigned to the pages of history by the advent of polymer, in 1991, with the last issue of each note bearing the signatures Fraser/Cole.

The penultimate $20 and $50 paper notes also carried the Fraser/Cole signatures, meaning that this was the last time that Australia’s $5, $10, $20 and $50 paper banknote types were released during a particular signature combination.

As with all Australian paper notes, the $5, $10, $20 and $50 1991 Fraser/Cole banknotes quickly disappeared from circulation, and all are scarce in premium grade today. As higher

denominations, and therefore less likely to be stashed away as a memento, the $20 and $50 are especially tough-to-find in Unc, with the notes cataloguing at A$120 and A$250 respectively. An unbeatable opportunity to add these important decimal paper types to your collection, we have all four 1991 Fraser/Cole notes in stock – with every note in pristine, original condition!

Thanks to a bulk purchase of several original bundles, we not only have the opportunity to offer the complete 1991 Fraser/Cole $5-$50 collection in strictly Uncirculated quality – we can do so at a dynamite discount! With the rising combined catalogue value now at A$450, the chance to secure the four 1991 Fraser/Cole paper notes at A$100 off must not be missed!

Green and

pristine!

Although the RBA denied the existence of the 1992 $5 Fraser/Cole with light green serials, it is now agreed that this scarce, unusual variety does indeed exist – and it’s available at Downies!

Experiencing teething problems in the early days of the production of Australia’s new polymer notes, NPA produced two $5 types in 1992. The standard $5 was thought to have black serials, but on close inspection, it can be discerned

that the serials are very dark green. Easily distinguished from

the dark green $5, the second type carries serials in a much lighter, brighter shade of green. Issued 20 years ago, neither note will be found in change in anything other than well circulated condition, with the light green $5

particularly scarce, and now valued at A$110 in Unc.

An irresistible opportunity for the serious Australian note collector, we have both of these distinctive types available in strictly Uncirculated condition!

The rare VG95 Last Prefix $50!A powerful illustration of the great potential of Australian banknotes, the 1995 $50 Fraser/Evans VG95 Last Annual Prefix note is scarce to rare – across all grades.

It is only in recent years that the focus of the market has moved from First & Last SIGNATURE Prefix notes to First & Last ANNUAL Prefix notes. With, in many cases, years passing after issue before Annual Prefix types

were identified, it is no shock that many early polymer Last Annual Prefix notes are scarce. Missing from most collections, the 1995 $50 VG95 is a

prime example of this phenomenon.

Denoting the final $50 print run of 1995, the Fraser/Evans $50 VG95 Last Annual Prefix is scarce, regardless of

the grade. Naturally rare in premium quality, the 1995 $50 VG95 is hard-to-find even in well circulated condition. Valued at A$250 in Fine, this key note is one of the highest cataloguing polymer notes in this grade.

With this crucial Last Annual Prefix type rarely offered, we are destined to sell-out at super speed. Don’t miss the chance to plug that gap in your collection!

Features genuine meteorite!

The Cuddly Coin!

Defined by great originality, glowing quality and, crucially, the inclusion of a genuine piece of meteorite, the 2011 $5 Muonionalusta Meteorite Silver Proof is arguably the most distinctive issue in the tremendously successful Meteorite Coin Series.

Honouring the Muonionalusta Meteorite, discovered in Sweden in 1906, this 38.61mm 20g sterling silver Proof is notable for the dramatic, highly structured surface of the meteorite embedded in the reverse. The entrancing crystalline formation of the meteorite is the result of an almost unimaginably slow cooling process, taking literally millions of years. Indeed, it has been estimated that it took 1,000 years for the meteorite to cool by just 1 degree Celsius!

Millions of years in the making, the 2,500-coin mintage of this inspired legal tender release sold out in a matter of weeks, and we have just a few in stock – each set in an attractive case.

In terms of innovation, numismatics knows no bounds – as illustrated by the

astonishing 2011 $5 My Cuddly Teddy Bear Silver Proof. The first of

its kind, the reverse of the coin features a teddy bear made from original Swiss embroidery!

A highly original legal tender coin, struck to Proof quality from 25g of sterling silver, the 2011 $5 My Cuddly Teddy Bear Silver Proof was always assured a rapturous reception – and so it proved. Catching the eye of those looking for that ‘something different’ for their

collection, and the myriad people who collect teddy bears, the 2,011-coin mintage of this imaginative precious metal Proof sold out in short order.

Whether seen as an inspired addition to your own collection, or as an unusual gift, you will have to act fast. Just a few coins available – each housed in a plush case.

Pouncing upon an unexpected opportunity in the USA, however, we are delighted to once again highlight the unique qualities of this enchanting legal tender release.

Crafted from 25g sterling silver, the 2011 $5 Princess of the Sea Pearl Silver Proof is most notable for the inclusion of a magnificent apricot freshwater pearl, embedded within the expansive 38.61mm flan. A symbol of love, purity and beauty, the global fascination with this natural jewel ensured that the 2,500-coin mintage of the

Medieval English Silver!A fantastic opportunity to add high-grade English medieval silver to your collection, we have secured some particularly pretty Long Cross Pennies struck during the reign of King Henry III (1216-72).

One of only five English/British monarchs to rule for more than 50 years, Henry III was thrust upon the throne at the age of nine – the first child-king since the days of Aethelred the Unready (978-1016). Spending a great deal of his reign

battling with the Barons over Magna Carta and Royal rights, Henry III was forced to call a parliament, in 1264, and is famous for making Westminster the seat of government. A crucial juncture in the course of English political history, the reign of Henry III was also an important time for numismatics. Designed to safeguard the silver coins from the practice of clipping, it was during Henry’s reign that the Long Cross penny type was introduced.

Beyond the rich, fascinating history, the superb Long Cross Silver Pennies before you are most notable for the exceptional, seldom seen quality. Struck by hand well over seven centuries ago, these coins are distinguished by the excellent detail evident on both the reverse and stylised portrait of the King, and have been conservatively graded at good Very Fine.

Surprisingly affordable given the stunning state of preservation,

we have only a small number of these historic hammered silver coins in stock.

Britain’s 2012

Proof Set!

THE GLORY OF YOUTH…

Defined by the traditional qualities of the series – faultless quality, limited availability and top value – Britain’s 2012 Proof Set is also defined by superb new presentation.

Housed in a stylish embossed black

case, complete with an outer box for safe storage, the 2012 Proof Set comprises ten coins. A comprehensive appreciation of Britain’s coinage for 2012, the set is headlined by the one-year-only

38.61mm Diamond Jubilee £5 and Charles Dickens £2, united with the Technology £2 and the seven definitive coins from the 1p to the £1.

Maintaining the grand tradition of luxury, quality and value-for-money that has driven demand for this key annual release, each 2012 Proof Set is complete

with a booklet incorporating a Certificate of Authenticity confirming the tiny mintage of just 30,000.

Before the 1887-93 Jubilee Sovereign Series – introduced when the Queen was in her 60s – the only obverse used on British sovereigns struck during Victoria’s reign portrayed the Queen as she was when she took the throne in 1837 at the age of 18. United with the Shield reverse, the Young Head effigy was created

by famous Royal Mint designer, William Wyon. A fine work of numismatic portraiture, the first Victoria obverse type looks particularly fetching in the upper echelons of quality – as here. Offered in rarely seen EF, we have just a few British 1850s Young Head Sovereigns in stock – date of our choice.

Old Ironsides – celebrated in silver! The latest issue in the Perth Mint’s internationally acclaimed Ships that Changed the World Series, this striking precious metal Proof celebrates one of the most famous vessels in the history of the USA – the USS Constitution.

Launched in 1797, and named after the US Constitution by George Washington, the USS Constitution is the world’s oldest floating commissioned naval vessel. A wooden-hulled, three-masted, heavy frigate, the Constitution shot to prominence during the War of 1812, sinking five British warships. The Constitution’s success saw her dubbed ‘Old Ironsides’, and also ensured the vessel a degree of adulation denied most ships. Indeed, public pressure

has repeatedly saved the Constitution from demolition, and she is considered one of America’s primary military icons.

A natural choice for inclusion in this enthralling exploration of global maritime history, the USS Constitution is superbly depicted upon the broad 40.60mm frame of this beautifully designed .999 fine 1oz silver Proof. Forming a vivid contrast with the full-colour backdrop, the detailed, fully struck-up portrayal of Old Ironsides will undoubtedly catch the eye of collectors across the globe – especially in the USA.

Whether one considers the Perth Mint’s Famous

Battles, Famous Naval Battles or Ships that Changed the World Series, the size and power of the US collector market has ensured that the coins celebrating US history have been the most popular. With the mintage set at just 5,000, and the USS Constitution so important to the USA’s national history, this new precious metal Proof

The War of 1812…

Oh! Canada! With Downies celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2012, we thought now would be the

perfect time for our clients to

meet our Managing Director, Ken Downie, and explore the collecting interests of the man who has overseen our rise from a small collectables company into the largest numismatic conglomerate in the Southern Hemisphere.

When did you start collecting and what was your first item?

I started collecting in 1964. With a developing passion for coins and tokens, my first item was an Australian Trade Token.

What was it that drew you to your first token and to collecting itself?

As my father operated the Stamp and Coin Trading company PJ Downie, I started to work there on my school holidays. With my passion beginning to develop, I joined the Numismatic Association of Victoria, where I was introduced to tokens and from there began my journey as a collector.

What has been your favourite token throughout your collecting career and why?

My favourite has always been the John Allen Token of Kiama, which I purchased in the mid 1980s. It was a great rarity at the time, and is still considered the King of the entire token series..

For more on Ken’s collecting, and his views on Australian

numismatics, please check out www.downies.com, or find us on Facebook or Twitter!

The King George VI 1937 Coronation Crown!

Struck at the Melbourne Mint exactly 75 years ago to celebrate the coronation of King George VI, we have a just acquired a mountain of Australia’s biggest coin – the ever-popular 1937 Silver Crown!

Unique, as Australia’s only commemorative Crown, the 1937 Silver Crown had a mintage of just over one million. Notable as Australia’s highest predecimal coinage

denomination, the five shillings 1937 Crown is also notorious as the nation’s largest ever issued circulating coin. Measuring a massive 38.50mm in diameter, each 1937 Crown comprises nearly an ounce of sterling silver!

Mockingly dubbed ‘Casey’s Cartwheel’ after the Government Minister who oversaw its introduction, the imposing dimensions of the 1937 Crown

made it unpopular as a circulation coin. Ironically, it is the size and weight that make this key type so sought after by collectors. Indeed, it is rightly considered to be the compulsory centrepiece of every Australian predecimal collection. Importantly, the coin has proved just as popular with precious metal profiteers over the years, and thanks to huge silver price hikes in the 1970s and over the last few

years, the number lost to the melting pot has ensured that Australia’s biggest coin is increasingly scarce.

A fantastic opportunity for our clients, our acquisition of more than 500 examples of the 1937 Silver Crown gives us the chance to offer this distinctive, commanding coin in Very Fine, good Very Fine and Extremely Fine quality.

SCARCE IN EF

Seldom seen so nice, we have just secured a small batch of New Zealand’s 1949 Royal Visit Crown – in sparkling Choice Brilliant Uncirculated quality! Issued for the proposed tour by George VI, the 1949 Royal Visit Crown had a mintage of just over 200,000, and is notable as one of only three NZ Crown (5/-) types. Struck from 50% silver, despite NZ switching to cupro-nickel for circulating coinage in 1947, we have just a few of these extremely pretty Choice BU 1949 Royal Visit Crowns in stock.

The second, and rarest, of only two Australian Crown dates, the 38.50mm, 28.27g sterling silver 1938 Crown is not only notable for the size and weight – it is notable as one of the lowest mintage issues in the 1910-64 predecimal series. With the Crown unpopular as a circulation issue, production at the Melbourne Mint was halted at just 101,600 coins! Very scarce, with many coins from the tiny mintage melted for the intrinsic value, we have this crucial date in superior

grade Extremely Fine quality.
