    Lift Terminology

    Introduction:

Braun L955 Millennium Serieslifts are consumer oriented(designed to allow operation bythe wheelchair passenger). L955lift models provide fully automaticoperation of all lift functions aswell as optional automatic dooroperators (if so equipped).

The L955 Millennium Lift Seriesincludes variations of L955SEand L955U lift models. Lift modelnumbers indicate platform/rollstop configuration and physicaldimensions. A standard L955SElift model is depicted in the LiftTerminology Illustration. Thebridge plate extension is bolted to

the bridge plate (as shipped). Instepwell applications where

additional platform length isrequired, the extension plate maybe bolted to the heel (inboard

    end) of the platform.

Lift operation procedures areidentical for all L955 Series liftmodels. The operating Instruc-tions contained in this manualand appearing on lift-postedoperating instructions decalsaddress the lift control switches

and the corresponding lift func-tions. Instructions are providedfor manual operation of the lift inevent of power or equipmentfailure.

Terminology: Become familiarwith the terminology that will beused throughout this manual.

Become familiar with the identifi-cation of lift components and their

functions. Contact your lift salesrepresentative or call The BraunCorporation at 1-800-THE LIFT if

any of this information is not fullyunderstood.

Direction: The terms "left (rear),""right (front)," "inboard," and"outboard" will be used through-out this manual to indicatedirection (as viewed from outsidethe vehicle looking directly at the

lift). Refer to the Lift TerminologyIllustration for clarification ofdirection terms.

    Lift Components

Refer to the Lift TerminologyIllustration for identification of liftcomponents.

    Pump Module: The lift-mounted

    Lift Terminology

pump module consists of thehydraulic pump, the manual handpump and electrical components

that power the lift electric/hydrau-lic systems.

Module-mounted ControlSwitches: The pump module isequipped with three color-codedand function-labeled controlswitches (OPEN/CLOSE, IN/OUTand UP/DOWN). The switches

activate the automatic lift func-tions and optional door operators.Further details are provided in theLift Pre-Lift Operation section(page 13).

Lift Frame: The lift frameconsists of the base plate, twotowers, the parallel arms, the

vertical arms, platform pivot armsand the handrails. The two main

hydraulic cylinders are housed inthe parallel arms. The electrical/hydraulic powered lift frame

components mechanically unfold, lower, raise and fold the liftplatform assembly.

Bridge Plate: The bridge plateassembly consists of the bridgeplate (striker back) and the bridgeplate extension (flap). The hingedbridge plate assembly bridges the

gap between the lift platform andthe vehicle floor when the platformis positioned at floor level. Note:The bridge plate extension (flap) isbolted to the bridge plate (asshipped) in the Lift TerminologyIllustration. In stepwell applica-tions where additional platformlength is required, the extension

plate may be bolted to the heel(inboard end) of the platform.

Dual Handrails: Dual handrailsare provided for wheelchairpassenger use. The handrails

automatically unfold to thedeployed position when theplatform unfolds and fold auto-matically to the stowed positionwhen the platform folds. Thepassenger may choose to grip thehandrails when on the lift platform(if applicable). Note:An addi-tional UP/DOWN control switch is

built into the right (front) handrail.

Platform Assembly: The liftplatform assembly consists of thesteel tubing frame with gratingsurface upon which the wheel-chair is positioned, the outboardroll stop, roll stop latch, the sideentry roll stop (SE only), and the

hydraulic cylinder assembly thatpowers the outboard roll stop.

Manual Operation System: Amanual backup hand pump isbuilt into the pump module. The

lift platform can be unfolded, lowered, raised and folded usingthe hand pump. Manual Opera-tion Instructions are provided onpages 31-33.

    Lift Actions and Functions

    UNFOLD (Out) - Platform

Unfold: Unfold is the action ofthe platform rotating out anddown from the fully-stowed(vertical) position to floor level(horizontal) position when theUNFOLD switch is pressed.

DOWN - Platform Lower: Downis the action of the platform

lowering from floor level positionto fully-lowered (ground level)

position when the DOWN switchis pressed.

DOWN - Roll Stop Unfold(Deploy)- When the platformreaches the fully-lowered(ground) position and the DOWNswitch is continued to bepressed, the outboard roll stopand the side entry roll stop rotatedownward from vertical positionto ramp position.

UP - Roll Stop Fold (Raise):When the lift is fully lowered andthe roll stops are in the rampposition, pressing the UP switchfirst rotates the roll stops upwardfrom ramp position to verticalposition.

UP - Platform Raise: Up is theaction of the platform raising

Automatic Roll Stop(s):L955SE and L955U lift platformsare equipped with a cylinder-

powered outboard roll stop thatprovides a ramp for wheelchairloading and unloading at groundlevel. L955SE platforms areequipped with an outboard rollstop and a side entry roll stop. The side entry roll stop is useful intight parking situations by reducingwheelchair caster turn-out when

boarding and exiting the platform. The two roll stops function to-gether in unison.

Roll Stop Latch: The spring-loaded latch locks the outboardroll stop in the vertical positionwhen the platform raises aboveground level.

FOLD (In) - Platform Fold: Foldis the action of the platformrotating up and in from the floorlevel (horizontal) position to fully-stowed (vertical) position whenthe FOLD switch is pressed.

    Stowed Position: The lift is

stowed when the lift platform hasbeen fully raised and folded fully(vertical position).

Floor Level: Floor level is theposition (height) the platformassembly reaches in order forthe wheelchair passenger toenter and exit the vehicle (fully

raised). The platform automati-cally stops at floor level when

Typically, the bridge plateextension is bolted to thebridge plate as shown in the LiftTerminology Illustration (stan-dard bridge plate configura-tion). In stepwell applicationswhere additional platformlength is required, the exten-sion plate may be bolted to theheel (inboard end) of theplatform.
