Some Ways To Control High BloodPressure Without Medication

By making these 10 lifestyle changes, you can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease.

f you've been diagnosed with high bloodpressure (a systolic pressure — the topnumber — of 140 or above or a diastolic

pressure — the bottom number — of 90or above), you might be worried aboutaking medication to bring your numbers

down.Lifestyle plays an important role inreating your high blood pressure. If youuccessfully control your blood pressure

with a healthy lifestyle, you may avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication. Here are some lifestyle changes you canmake to lower your blood pressure andkeep it down.

. Lose extra pounds and watch your

waistlineBlood pressure often increases as weightncreases. Losing just 10 pounds (4.5

kilograms) can help reduce your bloodpressure. In general, the more weightyou lose, the lower your blood pressure.Losing weight also makes any bloodpressure medications you're takingmore effective. You and your doctor candetermine your target weight and thebest way to achieve it.Besides shedding pounds, you shouldalso keep an eye on your waistline.Carrying too much weight around your

waist can put you at greater risk of highblood pressure. In general:

Men are at risk if their waistmeasurement is greater than 40inches (102 centimeters, or cm).Women are at risk if their waistmeasurement is greater than 35inches (89 cm).Asian men are at risk if their waistmeasurement is greater than 36inches (91 cm).Asian women are at risk if theirwaist measurement is greater than

32 inches (81 cm).2. Exercise regularlyRegular physical activity — at least 30o 60 minutes most days of the week —an lower your blood pressure by 4 to

9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Andt doesn't take long to see a difference.f you haven't been active, increasing

your exercise level can lower your bloodpressure within just a few weeks.f you have pre-hypertension — systolic

pressure between 120 and 139 ordiastolic pressure between 80 and 89 —xercise can help you avoid developing

    ull-blown hypertension. If you already

have hypertension, regular physicalactivity can bring your blood pressuredown to safer levels.

Talk to your doctor about developingan exercise program. Your doctor canhelp determine whether you need anyexercise restrictions. Even moderateactivity for 10 minutes at a time, such aswalking and light strength training, canhelp. But avoid being a "weekend warrior."Trying to squeeze all your exercise in onthe weekends to make up for weekdayinactivity isn't a good strategy. Thosesudden bursts of activity could actually

     be risky.

    3. Eat a healthy dietEating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy

products and skimps on saturated fatand cholesterol can lower your blood

pressure by up to 14 mm Hg. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approachesto Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.It isn't easy to change your eating habits,

but with these tips, you can adopt ahealthy diet:• Keep a food diary.  Writing down

what you eat, even for just a week, can shed surprising light on your

true eating habits. Monitor what youeat, how much, when and why.

    • Consider boosting potassium.Potassium can lessen the effects ofsodium on blood pressure. The bestsource of potassium is food, suchas fruits and vegetables, rather thansupplements. Talk to your doctorabout the potassium level that's bestfor you.

    • Be a smart shopper.  Make ashopping list before heading to thesupermarket to avoid picking up

junk food. Read food labels whenyou shop and stick to your healthy-eating plan when you're dining out, too.

    • Cut yourself some slack. Althoughthe DASH diet is a lifelong eatingguide, it doesn't mean you have tocut out all of the foods you love. It'sOK to treat yourself occasionally tofoods you wouldn't nd on a DASHdiet menu, such as a candy bar ormashed potatoes with gravy.

    4. Reduce sodium in your dietEven a small reduction in the sodium in

your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2

to 8 mm Hg. The recommendations reducing sodium are:• Limit sodium to 2,300 milligra

    (mg) a day or less.• A lower sodium level — 1,500

a day or less — is appropriate  people 51 years of age or oland individuals of any age who African-American or who have h

blood pressure, diabetes or chrokidney disease.

To decrease sodium in your diet, consithese tips:• Track how much salt is in y

diet. Keep a food diary to estimhow much sodium is in what you

and drink each day.• Read food labels. If possible, cholow-sodium alternatives of the foand beverages you normally buy.

    • Eat fewer processed foods. Potchips, frozen dinners, bacon

     processed lunch meats are highsodium.

    • Don't add salt. Just 1 level teaspoof salt has 2,300 mg of sodium. Uherbs or spices, rather than saltadd more avor to your foods.

    • Ease into it.  If you don't feel lyou can drastically reduce

sodium in your diet suddenly,  back gradually. Your palate wadjust over time.

    5. Limit the amount of alcohol ydrink Alcohol can be both good and bad your health. In small amounts, it

potentially lower your blood pressure2 to 4 mm Hg. But that protective effis lost if you drink too much alco

     — generally more than one drink a for women and men older than age or more than two a day for men age

and younger. Also, if you don't normdrink alcohol, you shouldn't sdrinking as a way to lower your blo

pressure. There's more potential hathan benet to drinking alcohol. If you drink more than moderate amouof it, alcohol can actually raise blo

pressure by several points. It can areduce the effectiveness of high blo

pressure medications.• Track your drinking patter

Along with your food diary, kan alcohol diary to track your t

drinking patterns. One drink equals12 ounces (355 milliliters, or mL)of beer, 5 ounces of wine (148 mL)or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor (45

mL). If you're drinking more thanthe suggested amounts, cut back.Consider tapering off. If you're aheavy drinker, suddenly eliminatingall alcohol can actually trigger severehigh blood pressure for several days.So when you stop drinking, do itwith the supervision of your doctoror taper off slowly, over one to twoweeks.Don't binge. Binge drinking —having four or more drinks in arow — can cause large and suddenincreases in blood pressure, in

addition to other health problems.6. Avoid tobacco products andecondhand smoke

On top of all the other dangers ofmoking, the nicotine in tobacco

products can raise your blood pressureby 10 mm Hg or more for up to an hourafter you smoke. Smoking throughouthe day means your blood pressure mayemain constantly high.

You should also avoid secondhand smoke.nhaling smoke from others also puts you

at risk of health problems, including highblood pressure and heart disease.

    7. Cut back on caffeine

The role caffeine plays in blood pressures still debatable. Drinking caffeinated

beverages can temporarily cause a spiken your blood pressure, but it's unclear

whether the effect is temporary or longlasting. To see if caffeine raises your blood

     pressure, check your pressure within

30 minutes of drinking a cup of coffeeor another caffeinated beverage youregularly drink. If your blood pressureincreases by ve to 10 points, you may

be sensitive to the blood pressure raisingeffects of caffeine.8. Reduce your stress

Stress or anxiety can temporarily increase blood pressure. Take some time to thinkabout what causes you to feel stressed, such as work, family, nances or illness.Once you know what's causing yourstress, consider how you can eliminate

or reduce stress. If you can't eliminate all of your stressors, you can at least cope with them in a healthierway. Take breaks for deep-breathingexercises. Get a massage or take up yoga ormeditation. If self-help doesn't work, seekout a professional for counseling.9. Monitor your blood pressure athome and make regular doctor'sappointments

If you have high blood pressure, youmay need to monitor your blood pressureat home. Learning to self-monitor

your blood pressure with an upper armmonitor can help motivate you. Talk

to your doctor about home monitor before getting started.Regular visits to your doctor are alikely to become a part of your norm

routine. These visits will help keep ton your blood pressure.• Have a primary care doct

People who don't have a primcare doctor nd it harder to contheir blood pressure. If you cvisit the same health care facility

professional for all of your hecare needs.

    • Visit your doctor regularly.your blood pressure isn't wcontrolled, or if you have otmedical problems, you might nto visit your doctor every mo

to review your treatment and madjustments. If your blood pressis under control, you might nto visit your doctor only every to 12 months, depending on otconditions you might have.

    10. Get support from family afriends

Supportive family and friends help improve your health. They mencourage you to take care of yoursdrive you to the doctor's ofce or embon an exercise program with you to kyour blood pressure low. Talk to yfamily and friends about the dangershigh blood pressure. If you nd you need support beyond yfamily and friends, consider joiningsupport group. This may put you in towith people who can give you an emotio

Keys To Raising A Gifted Child

Love, laugh, listen, and learn. Raisingand nurturing a gifted child can be anxciting yet daunting challenge.

Learn to be positive.  Giftedness canbe an exciting challenge or a chore,

depending on how you see a child'sharacteristics. For example, persistence

and stubbornness are the same trait.Understand the way that your child'sgiftedness affects his or her needs:ntellectual, social, emotional, and

physical needs. For example, ideas forgedby eight-year-old minds may be difculto produce with ve-year-old hands.

Be a knowledgeable advocate.  Thebrighter the child is, the greater is his orher emotional complexity and potentialvulnerability. You might have to educate

he educators.Read aloud to your child. It is importanthat parents read to their gifted child

often, even if the child is already capableof reading.Help your child discover personalnterests. Stimulation and support ofnterests are vital to the development ofalents. Parents should expose their childo their own interests and encouragehe child to learn about a wide variety

of subjects, such as art, nature, music,

and sports, in addition to traditionalacademic subjects such as math, reading, and science.Encourage the support of extendedfamily and friends. As an infant, a

(It can behelpful to have extended family in thehome, grandparents who live nearby, orclose friends in the neighborhood whocan spend some time with the child sothe primary caretakers can get somerest and to give the infant added -- ordifferent -- stimulation.)Speak and listen to your child withconsideration and respect.  From the

time he or she can talk, a gifted childis constantly asking questions and willoften challenge authority. "Do it becauseI said so" doesn't work. Generally, agifted child will cooperate more with

parents who take the time to explainrequests than with more authoritarian

parents.Teach your child how to ndinformation and resources in a varietyof ways. Gifted children need to know,to learn, to solve, and to ponder. There

will be times when your child's experon a topic will be greater than yours, you will not be able to provide answor solutions.Be a welcome person in your chil

school or educational environmeIf educators know you rst as a willvolunteer, they will be more responswhen you want something for your chBecome involved in a local, staor regional parent group. Or joinemail list. Parents of gifted childneed opportunities to share parentexperiences and problem solvstrategies with one another. And it tathe persistence of large groups of pareto ensure that provisions for gifchildren are kept rmly in place.

The key to raising gifted childis to respect their uniqueness, thopinions and ideas, and their dreamIt can be painful for parents when thchildren feel out of sync with others, it is unwise to put too much emphasisthe importance of tting in; children enough of that message in the outsworld. At home, children need to knthat they are appreciated for bethemselves.Love, laugh, listen, and learn.

How To Get Kids To Eat Vegiest's clear from research that the children

are either eating vegies disguisedas anything other than a vegie orearning how to grow and choose them

hemselves. Whatever the technique, having fun is important.

    - "Talk the broccoli, daddy""Please don't eat me, NOOO, not myhead...AARRGGHH...Not my legs...";Works for my 4year old (nearly) every

time (others join in!)- Sticker Charts - every different veggie

gets a sticker, when they reach stickers they get a special outing to

park, beach or movies etc...- As you walk past the vegie trays, tell y
