Leadership vs. Management What is the difference between leadership and management? The biggest
difference between the two is the way they motivate people who work or follow them,
and this sets the tone for most other aspects of what they do. A leader refers to guiding or
directing on a course or in a direction. Managing refers to handling or directing with a
degree of skill. To be a great manager, you must understand what it takes to also be a
great leader.
A leader must establish purpose, the direction or the strategy he stands for, which
is the reason why others should follow. The leaderships’ inherent strength is in defining a
“vision” for the organization, it is the leader’s ability to imagine a difference and better
future for the organization along with plans to achieve it. Envisioning the path to a better
future is a very creative process and often cannot be taught or learned, except for how
leaders generally formulate it. Leaders often collect dissimilar problems from various
units of organizations; synthesize them into a vision that articulates a compelling picture
of the future. Leaders have three tasks they perform. Those are creating a vision,
developing a strategy, and leading people.
Leaders have skills. There are three skills; conceptual skills, human skills, and
technical skills. On top of the purpose of a leader, there is leadership style, which is
determined by the approach a leader takes for getting things done. Since the primary role
of a leader is to get the tasks done through people, leaders have to focus on the
productivity of the employees along with maintaining good relationship with them.
Management has a purpose, just as leadership does. To begin, let’s break down
some key characteristics of a manager. This role in a typical company or organization
will reflect a person whose primary focus is on managing a team of people and their
activities. The role can differ by scope, types of roles, and can sometimes even be
focused on efforts outside of true people management, for example project and process
managers. One of the key characteristics of a manager is very basic in the sense that they
are someone who was given their authority by the nature of their role. They ensure work
gets done; focus on day to day tasks, and manage the activities of others. Manager’s
focus on tactical activities and often times have a more directive and controlling
approach. Being tactical is not altogether a negative approach as this is a skill set that is
greatly needed in business especially in the fast paced environments most of us work and
live in. Being able to organize people to accomplish tasks can be a great asset. In many
organizations, managers are often times the previous high performers at the employee
level.
There’re three main differences between leadership and management. To start, the
first would be that as a leader, one would synthesize and in management, one would
analyze. In leadership, the term synthesis means to put together all the issues and solve
them holistically; or from bottom to top. As in management, the term analyze, means to
take the issues and break them into smaller problems and then solve each of them from
top to bottom. The second difference would be that leadership has a long term impact and
management has short term goals. A leader should focus on creating a vision and
motivate the organization towards a goal, which would be the long term impact, rather in
management; they concentrate on perfecting short term goals efficiently. The third being,
in leadership, there is the intention of climbing to the next level, and management is the
process of efficiently executing the plan. Leaders must be inspirational and charismatic
people who lead others to the next level. Managers supervise subordinate staff, get the
tasks completed, measure and report on performance and reward.
A personal example when I was taking the position as a leader, was when I
became an officer of NUHE for the second time. Holding this position of treasurer,
means to look over my peers and guide them to the next level onto becoming a better
person. Every day, I ask myself, “how can we get the students to become more
involved?” it is up to a leader to determine the vision and how to inspire someone
to do something powerful! In high school, I was the Vice President of Student Congress;
I was a leader. Someone who wanted my team to step up to the plate and figure out how
to be the best person they can be. I wanted the rest of congress to be a part of something
that a lot of other students were not able to be a part of. Another example of when I was a
leader, was being part of the longest and most toughest swim there was on the swim
team. I demonstrated the position of a leader because no one on my swim team wanted to
be in the 500 meter race, that is twenty laps back and forth, underwater! No one wanted
to swim for a constant ten to fifteen minutes in the water competing with 5 other people
in order to win for my team! I am a leader! I stood up to the plate and told my coach that
I would swim it so not one else would have too. Another, time where I believe I take the
role of a leader would be when I am in class and the teacher asks you to get into a group
and jot down notes on a specific topic, everyone looks at each other like, “who’s going to
write this time?’. Well I step up to the plate and do the writing without even being asked
or told, when in the long run, I think I learn more this way than just being ‘one’ out in the
crowd. Lastly, I would like to say, I think I perform leadership when I find people
coming to me for help. Obviously, I have something in me and my personality, that
shows I am someone who someone else wants to follow. I tell people to have an open
mind and that one will never know what may happen in the future, and to always strive
for the highest.
In conclusion, there are many differences between leadership and management.
The main ones; to be a leader you synthesize, and a manager analyzes. In leadership there
are long term impacts on things, rather in management short term goals are put into play
and achieved efficiently. Lastly, in leadership you intend on climbing to the next level. In
management you execute the plan efficiently and effectively. Both leadership and
management are big roles to play in an organization or business. In order to have a well
rounded entity, you must have quality leaders and managers in order to get the job done
correctly. Always remember, go out and do your best work possible.
