AnswerAt the end of the story.

This excerpt tells readers about Santiago's chase after the swordfish and success in catching the fish.(Page 129)

It has great strength which is shown through its images from the excerpt. (Page ...)

For over 84 days and nights he has not been able to catch the fish. Not only does he love it, but he is also determined to kill it because:- It is the embodiment of the fruit of his labor; The success in catching it can eliminate bad luck and continual failure, as well as proving that he will never admit defeat.

- The fish displays admirable qualities; it does not destroy the boat or dive to cut itself from the fishing rod. Instead, it accepts to enter the competition.

(Page ...)

The fight is really hard. To win the victory, Santiago takes the following course of action :

+ reeling the fish in in order to make it rapidly rotate.

+ praying that the fish won't escape.+ Promising God to read the Bible.+ Analyzing the situation.+ Moving the fish.+ Encouraging himself.

+ Summoning his strength.

+ Throwing the spear to kill the fish.

The old man has been fighting hard against the fish's strength for a long time, getting weary in the process: + As the fish starts to loop, the old man still has the strength to pull: (P.127)

+ As he is exerting himself to clutch the rope, he is exhausted. (P.127)

+ Getting dull is the nadir of his exhaustion, yet he starts to console himself that he can win the victory (P.131)

( Gradually, the old man is getting stronger than the swordfish.( Through his victory, he is seen to possess a lot of good qualities:

- A seasoned fisherman : he can feel the pressure of the rope, then he decides to pull or loosen leisurely to make the fish exhausted. He also feels circular directions, and throws spears very well.

- Most importantly, he has confidence, courage, and a strong will as well:

+ always has his confidence to catch the fish .(P. ...)+ is determined to catch the fish.

- The old man has a loop in order to tie the fish to one side of the boat, yet the fish is too heavy. - The old man starts to regain his strength, but he is hungry and thirsty (eating raw shrimp). He is happy, yet it is hard for him to believe this victory is true. Then, the first shark attacks.

- Humans' desire/ideal- A journey of pursuit of dreams+ The image of the swordfish's bones means the completion of humans' pursuit of desire ( another journey of pursuit of desire awaits humans.( Humans find their strength from their desires, intelligence, and integrity ( Humans' desire is unlimited.("Humankind can be destroyed but cannot be defeated."

Content: The image of the lonely old man's chase after the biggest swordfish ever is the beauty of dreams and hard journey of fulfillment of dreamsArt- The writing style is honest and simple. In fact, the story contains the meaning that shines through implicity. This piece of work is like an iceberg.

- Innermost monologue is usefully applied. The story contains a lot of symbolic images.

IV. Consolidation: ( 1m) Students are expected to know
