    Introduction

    This year marks the centenary of the Chinas 1911 Revolution, an epoch-making event in our nations history. How well do you know about it? Apart from participating the celebrations, you can also take the opportunity to brush up your history knowledge through the vast collection of the public libraries. The Hong Kong Public Libraries houses a vast array of resources on the 1911 Revolution, including books, old newspapers, ebooks, periodicals, audio-visual and online materials. To help you acquire a better understanding of the historical significance of the Revolution and find the relevant information effectively, the Hong Kong Central Reference Library has

    compiled the library resources guide on Footprints of the Chinas 1911 Revolution for free distribution to the public and schools. In addition to listing the library resources under different topics, the resource guide introduces the different methods in searching the relevant materials and enables readers to review the historical event through different dimensions. 2011 9 Published by the Hong Kong Public Libraries September 2011

    How to Search the Relevant Library Resources on the

    Chinas 1911 Revolution

    The Hong Kong Public Libraries houses a vast array of resources on the Chinas 1911 Revolution, including books, ebooks, periodicals, audio-visual and online materials. Among them are some valuable primary sources as well for reference and research. In this section, we would introduce the different ways in searching the relevant library resources on the 1911 Revolution through our different categories of library collection.

    Books, Mircrofilms, Journals

    Readers can search books, periodicals and microfilms by accessing the Library Catalogue in the library or via the Internet.

    Select Search / Reserve from the Main Menu, and then click Library Catalogue.

    Select a type of library material, e.g. All materials, Books or Serials.

    Select a search option and enter the search term(s). For instance, to search by subject

    heading, click Subject Keyword, enter China 1911 Revolution, and click Submit.

    B. Multimedia Information: Videos, Audios and Newspapers

    Hong Kong Public Libraries provide a rich collection of digitized images and

    audio-visual resources on Hong Kong. Readers can visit the Multimedia Information System (MMIS) homepage via the Internet to view all these digitized resources including old Hong Kong newspaper clippings such as The Chinese Mail and The China Mail (see Appendix) and to pre-listen some of the audio materials such as the talks organized by the Hong Kong Public Libraries and recordings produced by the Radio Television Hong Kong.

The database is divided into 10 series according to the subjects of the dissertations and our libraries have subscribed to 4 of them: Humanities (available at Hong Kong Central Library), Education and Social Sciences (available at Hong Kong Central Library, Kowloon Public Library and Sha Tin Public Library), Economy and Management, and Politics/Military Affairs/Law (available at Hong Kong Central Library and City Hall Public Library).

    1994 It offers full-text and full-image access to over 8,000 serials published in China in the fields of science and engineering, agriculture, medicine and hygiene, humanities, economics, politics and law, education and social sciences, electronics and information science. Articles are mainly written in Chinese and only some of them are English articles. Hong Kong Central Library provides all 10 series. City Hall Public Library provides the 2 series on Economy & Management, and Politics/Military Affairs/Law. Kowloon Public Library and Sha Tin Public Library provide the series on Education and Social Sciences only.
