The content of this volume consists partly of works that have survived in the composer’s manuscript and are now published for the first time, and partly of the original ver-sions of pieces that were published during Liszt’s lifetime but later reworked. Of the earlier versions connected with Years of Pilgrimage, 2nd Year, Italy, the most notewor-thy are the two completed versions of the Dante sonata, which are now appearing in print for the first time. Further important compositions belonging to the Italy cycle are the Petrarch sonnets; the first versions of these that we are publishing were actually published by the composer, and he also included them in his concert repertoire. Another particularly significant piece being published for the first time is the Freischütz fantasia, a characteristic, fine ex-ample of the type of opera fantasia Liszt developed at the beginning of the 1840s. Of the waltzes that feature in this volume, in addition to the first version of the concert pieces – the Grande valse di bravura and the Valse mélancolique – we have also included three complete, technically less demanding little pieces that Liszt intended primarily as mementos.

Der Band beinhaltet mehrheitlich die als Autograph er-halten gebliebenen Werke, die hier erstmalig publiziert werden, und andererseits ursprüngliche Versionen von Werken Liszts, die noch zu Lebenszeit des Meisters her-ausgegeben, aber später überarbeitet wurden. Von den früheren, dem Années de pèlerinage, 2e année, Italie-Band zugehörigen Versionen verdienen vor allem die zwei vollendeten der Dante-Sonate besondere Auf-merksamkeit, die erstmals veröffentlicht werden. Die weiteren bedeutenden Kompositionen des Italien-Zyklus sind die Petrarca-Sonette. Die erste Version dieser Wer-kesind, wurde schon damals von Liszt publiziert und von ihm selbst in sein Repertoire aufgenommen. Unter den Erstausgaben soll auch auf die Freischütz-Fantasie beson-deres Augenmerk gelegt werden. Diese ist ein typischer und niveauvoller Vertreter der Anfang der 1840er Jahre erarbeiteten Liszt’schen Ausprägung der Opernfantasie. Unter den Walzern des Bandes bekamen neben den ersten Versionen der Konzertstücke – Grande valse di bravura und Valse mélancolique – auch drei vollendete, technisch weniger anspruchsvolle kleine Stücke ihren Platz. Diese waren vom Meister als Gedenkblätter gedacht.

This selection is intended to reveal a less-known aspect of the genius of Franz Liszt, the greatest pianist of the 19th century: as a master of piano miniatures. While his large-scale works written over many years show Liszt as a striving composer for whom the creative process was difficult, at the same time, hidden in the shadow of the monumental peaks, the “moments musicaux” tend to cap-ture him in the process of improvisation, at the moment when a compositional idea flashed into his mind and was first noted down. The miniatures that feature in our selec-tion trace his creative path through six decades (1827–1885), from his youthful testing of his wings right up to his final farewell. The manuscript of any piece that did not later become part of a cycle or the starting-point for a larger-scale composition generally remained in the mists of obscurity as a treasured memento preserved by one of his pupils or admirers.

The latest volume in this highly successful series offers romantic character pieces by Polish, Czech and Russian composers, including Moszkowski, Smetana, Fibich and Glinka, for enterprising young pianists and their teachers to discover. The less well-known composers are also note-worthy; for instance, Maria Szymanowska, who toured the whole of Europe as one of the most famous virtuoso concert pianists of her time, and was awarded the title of first pianist to the Tsar’s court in St Petesburg.

This collection of character pieces by Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian and Danish composers is a good illustration of the fact that there is plenty to discover in those areas of Europe that more rarely enjoy the limelight. The com-posers featured in this volume were all famous in their day, and not only participated in European musical life but also helped to shape it: the Norwegian Agathe Backer-Grøndahl, for example, was a pupil of Ferenc Liszt and Hans von Bülow, the Swede Ludvig Norman was also an outstanding concert pianist, and Niels Wilhelm Gade was the most important Danish romantic composer, conduc-tor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and a friend of Mendelssohn and Schumann.

Die Sammlung an Charakterstücken von schwedischen, finnischen, norwegischen und dänischen Komponisten zeigt auch gut, dass man sehr wohl in den Gebieten Eu-ropas vieles entdecken kann, die weniger in Rampenlicht stehen. Die Meister des Bandes waren zu ihrer Zeit nicht nur berühmte Komponisten und am europäischen Musikle-bens beteiligt, sie beeinflussten es auch. György Orbán, born in Transylvania in 1947, is one of the most important members of the middle generation of present-day Hungarian composers: his orchestral and vo-cal works are performed with great success worldwide. His pieces written for children were originally composed for the excellent piano teacher Ágnes Lakos’ publication entitled ’Friendly Piano Tutor”. The works are arranged in order of difficulty, as in the piano tutor. Among these com-positions there are several pieces for three or four hands, which the beginner can play together with the teacher or with another pupil. In these pieces we have marked the learner’s part with a little child’s head. The enclosed CD contains all the pieces in the collection. On the record-ing, which was made in Hungary in 2010, the pieces are played by pupils of Ágnes Lakos.

György Orbán, geb. 1947 in Siebenbürgen, ist einer der bedeutenden ungarischen Komponisten der mittleren Ge-neration. Seine orchestralen und vokalen Werke werden weltweit mit großem Erfolg gespielt. Seine Stücke für Kinder wurden ursprünglich für die Ausgabe: „Freundli-che Klavierschule” der ausgezeichneten Klavierpädagogin Ágnes Lakos komponiert. Die Werke stehen in der Rei-

The name of Mikl�s Kocsár, one of the most importanthe name of Mikl�s Kocsár, one of the most important members of the generation of Hungarian composers born in the 1930s, is known worldwide, from North America to Japan, mainly for his choral works. The special stylis-tic character of these works is due to his emphasis on at-tractive sound and strict formal proportions. His arrange-ments of old Hungarian dances for cello and piano are of moderate difficulty and can be successfully performed at student concerts or in amateur chamber music sessions. These melodies are taken from two 18th century Hungar-ian dance collections, the Sepsiszentgyörgy manuscript from Transylvania, and the Bark�czy manuscript originat-ing from Esztergom. The composer created the two series of dances that feature in this volume by combining four and six short dances respectively.

Kocsár Miklós (*1933) a budapesti Liszt Ferenc Zeneakadémián Farkas Ferenc tanítványa volt. Zeneszerzői pályája során egyaránt írt kantátá-kat, miséket, oratóriumot, zenekari darabokat, versenyműveket, hang-szeres szólódarabokat és dalokat. Többnyire magyar költõk verseire, illetve liturgikus szövegekre komponált kórusműveit Észak-Amerikától Japánig ismerik és éneklik. Műveinek sajátos stílusjegye a szép hangzásra való törekvés és a szigorú formai arányok igénye. Munkásságának elis-meréseként számos díjban részesült, s 2000-ben megkapta a legnagyobb magyar állami művészeti kitüntetést, a Kossuth-díjat is.

Miklós Kocsár (b. 1933) was a pupil of Ferenc Farkas at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. In the course of his career as a composer he has written cantatas, masses, an oratorio, orchestral pieces, concertos, solo instrumental pieces and songs. His choral works, mostly composed to verses by Hungarian poets or to liturgical texts, are known and sung from North America to Japan. Special stylistic features of his work are his quest for beauty of sound and insistence on strict formal propor-tions. In recognition of his work he has gained many prizes, and in 2000 he received the highest artistic award conferred by the Hungarian state, the Kossuth Prize.

Im Zuge seiner Komponistenlaufbahn schrieb er Kantaten, Messen, ein Oratorium ebenso wie Orchesterstücke, Konzerte, instrumentale Solostücke und Lieder. Seine vor allem nach Dichtungen ungarischer Meister, aber auch nach liturgischen Texten komponierten Chorwerke kennt und singt man weltweit von Nordamerika bis Japan. Zu den besonderen Merkmalen seiner Werke zählen sein Streben nach schönen Klängen und die Ambition zu strengen formalen Proportionen. In Anerkennung seines Schaffens wurden ihm zahlreiche Preise zuteil. So wurde ihm im Jahre 2000 auch die höchste ungarische staatliche Auszeichnung auf dem Gebiet der Kunst, der Kossuth-Preis verliehen.

Miklós Kocsár (né en 1933) a été l’élève de Ferenc Farkas à l’Académie de Musique Ferenc Liszt de Budapest. Pendant sa carrière, il a composé des cantates, des messes, un oratorio, des pièces pour orchestre, des concertos, des solos instrumentaux et des chansons. On connaît et chante ses oeuvres chorales – composées dans la plupart des cas sur des poèmes de poètes hongrois ou des textes litur-giques – de l’Amérique du Nord au Japon. Les marques caractéristiques de ses oeuvres sont la recher-che de l’euphonie et l’exigence de strictes proportions formelles. En reconnaissance de son oeuvre, il a reçut un nombre important de prix. Notamment, il a obtenu en 2000 la plus haute distinction de l’État hongrois, le prix Kossuth.

The flute is one of the most popular music school instru-ments, so after his volume of trios for violin, cello and piano the composer and arranger András So�s has now produced one devoted to flute trios; his attractive compi-lation considerably widens the range of possibilities for music school chamber music.The greater part of the vol-ume consists of easy transcriptions of well-known, popu-lar piano pieces (Schubert Ländler, two Mazurkas and a Prelude by Chopin, pieces for children by Schumann, the Cradle Song and a waltz by Brahms and the Ave Maria by Saint-Saëns), as well an excerpt of Schubert’s Rosamunde and a vocal duet by Mendelssohn.

Die Querflöte ist in den Musikschulen eine der belieb-testen Instrumente, deshalb meldet sich der Komponist und Bearbeiter András So�s nach seinem Trio-Band für Geige, Klavier und Cello, mit Querflötentrios zurück. Mit dieser attraktiven Zusammenstellung bereichert er die Möglichkeiten des Kammermusizierens in den Mu-sikschulen maßgeblich. Volume 11 of this popular series contains seven trios se-lected from the music of three centuries: early Hungarian music is represented by Chorea Hungarica, noted down in the 1660s in the Lőcse book of tablature, and Saltus Hungaricus from the Mártonfi manuscript (Csíksomly�, 1813), Baroque music by Domenico Gabrielli’s Balletto and Saraband, published in 1684; the Viennese classical style is represented by a set of variations by Haydn, two famous Menuettos by Beethoven and the Andante by Dot-zauer, and Romanticism by Schubert Ländler. The major-ity of the works are playable by music school students, but these effective pieces by outstanding composers will certainly be of interest to more experienced musicians as well.

Volume 12 in the series contains works by great compos-ers, adapted for four cellos. They all share a festive mood. Beethoven’s variations on the theme of the British nation anthem “God save the King” are followed by “The shep-herds’ farewell” from Berlioz’ oratorio The Childhood of Christ, and three Christmas pieces by Mendelssohn. The excerpt from Wagner’s Parsifal – excellently transcribed by Hermann Jacobowsky at the end of the 19th century – is associated with Good Friday, but because of its sacral character its mood harmonizes with that of the preceding pieces.

Trumpet Duos Trompetenduos for beginners / für anfänger

The latest publication by the well-known teacher of wind instruments, Péter Perényi, includes pieces that even ab-solute beginners on the trumpet can play: the pieces in the first chapter, entitled “Introduction to chamber music”, enable even young trumpeters who can play just one note on the instrument to discover the pleasure of shared mu-sic-making. Rhythm games, European folk tunes, then a wealth of easy performance pieces (from the medieval pe-riod, through Beethoven’s Ode to Joy right up to the pres-ent day) make up the valuable content of this volume.

Die neueste Ausgabe des bekannten Blasinstrumenten-lehrers Péter Perényi beinhaltet auch Stücke für ganz kleine Trompetenspieler: In den Stücken des Kapitels „Einführung in die Kammermusik“ können auch schon die Anfänger die Freuden des gemeinsamen Musizierens kennenlernen, die erst einen Ton spielen können. Rhyth-mik-Spiele, europäische Volkslieder und dann die vielen leichten Vortragsstücke mit Klavierbegleitung (vom Mit-telalter über die Ode an die Freude von Beethoven bis zur Gegenwart) machen den reichen Stoff des Bandes aus.

The composer wrote about his work: „The ’Lullaby’ to celebrate the first birthday of my son András forms the first song of the Fruit Basket. This cycle of children’s poems which is full of humour and delicacy of feeling, sometimes even reminiscent of a grotesque, which makes such poems equally delightful for adults, inspired me for furthern songs. There thus arose very fast this cycle of twelve pieces.”

Der Komponist schrieb über sein Werk: „Das ’Wiegen-lied’, das als Erstes entstandene Lied des Liederzyklus „Früchtekorb“, komponierte ich anlässlich des ersten Geburtstages meines Sohnes András. János Galli (1921–2006) was a conductor, composer, mu-sic teacher, a well-known and highly respected personal-ity in Hungarian wind music life. As a music teacher he directed numerous string and wind ensembles and choirs, made hundreds of transcriptions for wind orchestras, and instrumented works for ensembles of all sizes and forma-tions. The most important of his works are his series of volumes of marches, folksong arrangements and church music. He was excellent at instrumentation; for its fine sound and easy playability we recommend to youth wind bands and their conductors this work of his composed in memory of the king who founded the Hungarian state.

János Galli (1921–2006) Chorleiter, Komponist und Mu-siklehrer, war in den ungarischen Bläserkreisen eine be-kannte und anerkannte Persönlichkeit. Als Musiklehrer leitete er zahlreiche Streich- und Bläserensembles und Chöre, fertigte mehrere hundert Transkriptionen für Blä-serorchester an und instrumentierte Werke für verschie-den große Orchester unterschiedlicher Besetzung. Von seinen eigenen Kompositionen sind die Märsche, Volks-liedbearbeitungen und die kirchenmusikalische Heftreihe

am bedeutendsten. Er war eine exzellente Arrangeur. Sein Gedenkstück an den Staatsgründerkönig, Hl. Stephan empfehlen wir den Jugendblasorchestern und ihren Lei-tern wegen seines guten Klangs und wegen seiner einfa-cher Spielbarkeit.

Ferenc Erkel (1810–1893) was a composer, pianist, con-ductor and teacher, a leading figure in 19th-century Hun-garian music, creator of Hungarian national opera. In his operas based on Hungarian history (Bátori Mária, 1840; Hunyadi László, 1844; Bánk bán, 1861; Dózsa György, 1867, etc.), blending elements of the style of Bellini, Meyerbeer and Verdi with verbunkos he created a distinc-tively Hungarian opera genre. The “Weapon Dance” is a popular ballet interlude in his opera Dózsa György, and in J�zsef Pécsi’s transcription youth wind orchestras can now add it to their repertoire.

Ferenc Erkel (1810–1893) war Komponist, Pianist, Diri-gent und Pädagoge. Er war die Leitfigur des ungarischen Musiklebens im 19. Jahrhundert und erschuf die ungari-sche Nationaloper. In seinen Werken, in denen er die un-garische Geschichte zum Thema machte (Bátori Mária, 1840; Hunyadi László, 1844; Bánk bán, 1861; Dózsa György, 1867 usw.), vereinte er die Stilelemente von Bel-lini, Meyerbeer und Verdi mit deren des „Verbunkos” und schuf so die charakteristisch ungarische Operngattung. Der „Waffentanz“ ist eine populäre Balletteinlage aus der Oper „D�zsa György”, die jetzt in der Transkription von J�zsef Pécsi in das Repertoire der Jugendblasorchester aufgenommen werden kann.

Bottle Dance – Üveges tánc

Antal Farkas (1925–1992) composed works mainly for wind orchestras and wind chamber ensembles. The Bottle Dance is one of his most favourite works. The forerun-ner of the piece was written for an accordion band in the early 1960s. Later, at the instigation of the excellent folk dance choreographer Mikl�s Manninger, an arrangement for wind band was prepared. The production scored a re-sounding success not only with the audience but also with the musicians who performed in it, with the result that before long the composer prepared from the Bottle Dance an independent work for wind ensemble, a showy piece, virtuosic in its effect yet easily playable. The youth or-chestra arrangement is a simplified and shortened version of the piece for full-scale orchestra.

Antal Farkas (1925–1992) komponierte hauptsächlich für Blasorchester und Bläser-Kammerensembles. Der Flaschentanz gehört zu seinen beliebtesten Werken. Der Vorläufer des Stückes entstand in den frühen 1960er Jah-ren für Akkordeonorchester. Auf Initiative des ausgeze-ichneten Volkstanzchoreographen Mikl�s Manninger fand später auch eine Bearbeitung für Blasorchester statt. Nicht nur beim Publikum, auch bei den ausführenden Musikern hatte das Stück durchschlagenden Erfolg, des-halb komponierte Farkas vom Flaschentanz bald darauf ein eigenständiges – eindrucksvolles, virtuos wirkendes – und dennoch leicht spielbares – Werk für Blasorchester. Die Bearbeitung für Jugendorchester ist eine vereinfachte und verkürzte Fassung der Fassung für großes Orchester.

This splendidly instrumented work successfully com-bines 20th-century musical language with the antique elements deriving from its theme – for example, in the first movement (“Thessaloniki”) we immediately find an ancient Greek asymmetrical rhythm. The second move-ment takes us on an adventurous journey to those aston-ishing geological wonders, the Meteora; the third move-ment presents a picture of the Delphic dancers; in its title (“Athens”) the fourth movement indicates the form used in it, which preserves the unity between the thousands-of-years-old Acropolis and its contrasting environment (“Plaka”), echoing to the music of the bouzouki. In the suite the composer expertly exploits the possibilities of instrumentation offered by the wind orchestra; this ex-tremely effective work can be a rewarding concert piece for any ensemble.

Dieses Werk von István Bogár ist eines der ungarischen Stücke für Blasorchester, welches in den letzten Jahrzehn-ten international einen großen Erfolg erntete. Es entstand im Auftrag des Ungarischen Rundfunks, seine Erstauf-führung fand 1982 statt. Das großartig instrumentierte Werk vereint erfolgreich die musikalische Sprache des 20. Jahrhunderts mit den vom Thema vorgegebenen, an-

tiken Elementen. Ein Beispiel hierzu ist gleich im ersten Satz „Thessaloniki” ein altgriechischer, asymmetrischer Rhythmus. Der zweite Satz führt uns zu einem verblüf-fenden geologischen Wunder, den Meteoren; im dritten Satz wird das Bild der Delphi-Tänzer gezeichnet. Im vier-ten Teil („Athen“) wird die gebrauchte Form schon im Ti-tel angekündigt: Diese verewigt die kontrastierende Ein-heit der mehrere Jahrtausend alten Akropolis und ihr von Bouzouki-Musik lautes Umfeld („Plaka“). Der Kompo-nist nutzt in der Suite die vom Blasorchester vermittelten Instrumentierungsmöglichkeiten meisterhaft aus. Somit kann das außerordentlich eindrucksvolle Werk zu einem dankbaren Konzertstück aller Ensembles werden.

Ákos Zarándy (b.1982) is a talented representative of the youngest generation of Hungarian composers. The text of his unusual-sounding choral work entitled Apokalypsis Ióannou is taken from the Book of Revelations 22/5, part-ly from the original Bible in Greek, partly from a Latin translation of it. The score includes a translation of the text into English, and instructions on how to pronounce the Greek words.

Ákos Zarándy (*1982) ist ein talentierter Vertreter der jüngsten ungarischen Komponistengeneration. Den Text des außergewöhnlich klingendem Chorwerk Apokalypsis Ióannou entnahm er aus dem Buch Offenbarung des Jo-hannes (22/5.), zum Teil aus der originalen griechischen Bibel, zum Teil aus deren lateinischen Übersetzung. In den Noten finden die Interpreter ebenso die englische Übersetzung des Textes, sowie eine Anleitung zur Aus-sprache der griechischen Wörter.
