Citation preview

Saturday 18th April 3pm Ashton Town AFC 2-2 Atherton Collieries Town stun Colls with comeback by Kieran Makin Brownrigg's boys fight back from 2-0 down. Ashton Town came back from 2-0 down to earn a point at home to the newly crowned Champions Atherton Colleries. The match finished 2-2 at Edge Green Street after Town striker Marcus Cusani scored a brace to cancel out goals from Colls’ Wes Bancroft and Luke Gibson. The visitors were 2-0 up within the first 15 minutes as they pinned Ashton back in their own half. They opened the scoring after Matt Battersby’s clever cross found his strike partner Bancroft at the back post, who headed it into the top corner. They soon added a second after Town goalkeeper Michael Lowe tipped a Battersby chip over the bar. From the resulting corner Colls scored, Shaw’s delivery was headed home by centre-back Luke Gibson. Despite being two goals down, Town didn’t stop fighting and they soon had a path back into the match when they halved the deficit. Lovely intricate passing between the midfield three led to Connor Tagoe picking out Cusani. The attacker turned his man on the edge of the box, before firing the ball left-footed into the bottom corner despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts. The second half was much more tightly contested and included quite a few heated moments. However, it was a rare mistake from the away side that allowed Ashton to equalise. Colleries’ goalkeeper Danny Taberner scuffed a clearance straight to the dangerous Cusani, who rounded the keeper one on one before sliding the ball into the empty net from the angle. Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages of the game and it was the League leaders who came the closest. Lowe pulled off three outstanding saves to keep the scores level. These included a low one-handed save to prevent a point blank range bullet header and, also, a save to prevent Colls’ substitute Jordan Cover from lobbing him one on one. The match finished 2-2, a pulsating encounter that either team could have won. A very respectable point for Ashton Town against the North West Counties Football League Division One Champions.
