    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 1.0 SCOPE OF SPECIFICATION

    1.1 Introduction

    1.1.1 This specification applies to variable volume reciprocating pumps used in oil/gas production and refineryservice and is based on, and must be read with, API Specification 675 "Positive Displacement Pumps -Controlled Volume". This covers both diaphragm and packed plunger variable stroke metering pumps.

    1.1.2 Reciprocating positive displacement pumps to API 674 are covered by NOC Specification GES G.03 for both direct acting and power frame plunger and piston type pumps.

    1.1.3 This specification gives the minimum requirements for the design, fabrication, inspection, testing,documentation and preparation for shipment for metering pumps. Also included are the related lubricatingsystems, instrumentation and other auxiliary equipment.

    1.1.4 The Vendor/Contractor shall comply fully with the provisions laid down in this specification, any exceptionmust be authorised in writing by the Owner.

    1.1.5 In the event of any conflict between this specification and the Data Sheets, or with any of the applicableCodes and Standards, the Vendor/Contractor shall inform the Owner in writing and receive writtenclarification before proceeding with the work.

    1.1.6 This General Engineering Specification will form part of the Purchase Order/Contract.

    1.2 Other NOC Specifications

    The following NOC specifications are an integral part of this specification and any exceptions shall beapproved in advance by the Owner.

    The Vendor/Contractor shall ensure all sub-vendors comply with the relevant sections of the abovespecifications.

    1.3 Data Sheets

    The technical data supplied by the Owner for the equipment is given on the API Specification 675 DataSheets which are included at the end of this specification.

    The Vendor/Contractor shall complete the data sheets with the remaining information. Prior to shipment,

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 the Vendor/Contractor shall submit a complete set of "As-Built" Data Sheets.

    2.0 DEFINITIONS

    2.1 Technical

    The technical terms used in this specification are defined in paragraph 1.4 of API 675.

    2.2 Contractual

    The commercial terms used in this specification are defined as follows:

    Owner

    The oil or gas company, an associate or subsidiary who is the end user of the equipment and facilities.

    Vendor

    The company supplying the equipment and materials.

    Contractor

    The main contractor for a defined piece of work.

    Sub-Contractor

    A company awarded a contract by a contractor to do part of the work awarded to the Contractor.

    Inspection Authority

    The organisation representing the Owner or Contractor that verifies that the equipment and facilities have been designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance with the requirements of this specificationand the Purchase Order/Contract.

    Inspectors

    A qualified individual representing the Owner, Contractor or assigned Inspection Authority, who verifiesthat the equipment and facilities have been designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance withthe requirements of this specification and the Purchase Order/Contract.

    3.0 DESIGN

    3.1 Codes and Standards

    3.1.1 The design shall comply with this specification and the following Codes and Standards.

    API 675 "Positive Displacement Pumps - Controlled Volume", 2 nd Edition, October 1994

    Additionally, pressure parts of equipment in sour service shall comply with NACE Standard:MR-01-90, "Sulphide Stress Corrosion Metallic Materials for Oil Field Equipment".

    3.1.2 Unless specified otherwise in the Purchase Order/Contract, the current editions of the Codes and Standardsat the time of the order should be used.

    3.2 Additions and Exceptions to API 675

    The following paragraph numbers refer to API 675 2 nd Edition, October 1994 which shall be considered as

    In API 675 paragraphs are marked with a bullet (•) if the Owner has to make a decision or provideinformation. Where possible, these decisions have been made or alternatively guidelines provided. Such

    paragraphs are marked "*" in this specification.

    API 1.0 General

    1.2 Alternative Designs

    Add:

    Metric flanges/connections are not acceptable. Flanges or studded connections shall beto ANSI B16.1 and B16.5 except as qualified in paragraph 2.5. Metric fasteners may beused with the prior approval of the Owner, except on flanges.

    API 2.0 Basic Design

    2.1 General

    2.1.1 Add:

    Positive displacement controlled volume pumps shall be supplied only byVendor/Contractors qualified by experience in manufacturing the units required. Toqualify, the Vendor/Contractor shall have manufactured at the proposed point ofmanufacture, at least two pumps of comparable power, speed and service conditions. TheVendor/Contractor shall provide a reference list proving that the pumps have been

    performing successfully for a period of more than one year.

    2.1.4* NOC specification GES A.04 shall apply. The sound pressure level measured, at 3.3 feet(1.0 metre) from the surface of the equipment including driver shall not exceed 85 dB(A)assuming there is no background noise. It is not expected that special noise abatement

    treatment will be required. The Vendor/Contractor shall submit anticipated andguaranteed overall maximum noise data with his proposal and shall ensure any acoustictreatment does not interfere with access to the equipment for maintenance.

    2.1.6* Add:

    The pump installation shall be designed for easy maintenance and shall allow rapidaccess to the packing and valves. The Vendor/Contractor will be required to review andcomment on the Owner's layout arrangement.

    2.1.7* Motors, electrical components and other equipment shall comply with the other NOCspecifications listed in paragraph 1.2 and the requirements set out on the Data Sheets.

    The Vendor/Contractor shall assume unit responsibility for the entire pumping systemconsisting of pump, driver, transmission and associated auxiliary equipment.

    2.1.11 Add:

    Preference will be given to designs which do not require dismantling of pipework forroutine maintenance. The Vendor/Contractor shall state if piping disassembly is requiredfor removal of pump check valves or other routine maintenance items.

    2.1.14 Delete and replace with:

    The pump flow rate shall be adjustable from 0-100% of pump rated capacity while the

    2.1.20* In the unlikely event that jacketed housings are required for the duty, theVendor/Contractor and Owner shall jointly agree on the heating/cooling medium designconditions.

    2.1.21 Add:

    The NPSHA as defined in API 675 Section 1.4.1 shall not be greater than "0.7 of the NPSHA" or "NPSHA minus 3.3ft(1m)" whichever is the lesser figure. When operating atminimum NPSHA no drop in normal rated capacity or efficiency shall occur.

    Acceleration head shall be stated by the Vendor/Contractor in units of ft per "10 ft lengthof suction pipe" of diameter equal to the diameter of the suction flange. NPSHR shall be

    based on cold water, no correction shall be made to NPSHR for the favourable effect the pumped liquid may have.

    2.1.22 The maximum continuous pump speed shall be limited to 150 strokes/minute.

    2.2 Pressure-containing Parts

    2.2.1.1 Add:

    The maximum allowable working pressure of the cylinder shall be at least 120% of therated discharge pressure unless otherwise stated in the enquiry or order.

    2.2.1.2 Add:

    The corrosion allowance for pressure casings shall not be less than 1/8 ins (3mm).

    The retiring thickness of pressure casings shall be calculated based on the design pressure, temperature and allowable stresses, and any casting quality factors required bythe ASME Code.

    API 2.3 Liquid End Connections

    2.3.1 Add:

    Inlet and outlet connections shall have the same rating and shall be flat faced for cast ironor bronze. Raised faced connections shall be provided for steel.

    2.3.3 Add:

    For toxic or flammable services the auxiliary connections shall be flanged. For sizes below 1½ inch, a flanged length of pipe shall be welded to the pump using suitablereinforcement. The minimum size Owner connection shall be ½ inch diameter. TheVendor/Contractor shall provide all required vent and drain valves and piping: allauxiliary connections shall be piped to the edge of the skid.

    API 2.4 Pump Check Valves

    2.4.1 Add:

    Single element check valves are preferred for both suction and discharge.

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 API 2.5 Diaphragms

    2.5.2 Add:

    Double diaphragms are required for all services. The Vendor/Contractor shall state theexpected guaranteed life of the diaphragms for the duty conditions proposed.

    2.5.4 Add:

    Unless otherwise specified a conductivity type probe to indicate diaphragm failure shall be provided.

    API 2.6 Packed Plungers

    2.6.3 Add a new paragraph:

    Packed plungers shall not be used for toxic service.

    API 2.7 Relief Valve Application

    2.7.1 Add:

    The Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for the sizing and supply of the relief valveswhich shall be externally mounted and of the conventional spring loaded design.

    The set points shall not be less than the following:-

    For plunger pumps - 110% of rated discharge pressure. For diaphragm pumps - 115% ofrated discharge pressure.

    In addition, the Vendor/Contractor shall supply diaphragm pumps with a relief valve intheir hydraulic system set at not less than 110% of rated discharge pressure or at a

    pressure which will relieve before the external relief valve begins to lift.

    The relief valves and pulsation dampers shall be rated so as to avoid any tendency of therelief valve to lift when the pump operates at 105% of rated discharge pressure.

    The relief valve reseating pressure shall not be less than 95% of the set pressure.

    2.8 Gears

    2.8.1 Add:

    Gears integral with the motor or pump will be considered for powers less than 25 hp(18.6kW).

    2.9 Enclosure (Drive)

    2.9.3 All equipment shall be mounted on a baseplate to form a single lift package, see paragraph 3.3.

    2.11 Lubrication

    Forced feed lubrication is preferred for pumps over 35 hp (26kW).

    2.12 Capacity Adjustment

    2.12.2 The Owner shall advise the control medium on the Data Sheets - in the absence of this

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 information, manual control shall be provided.

    3.1 Drivers

    3.1.1 Add:

    The Owner shall advise the driver details on the Data Sheets. Motor drivers shall complywith GES L.11.

    3.2 Couplings and Guards

    3.2.2 Add:

    For flange mounted motors, couplings shall be manufacturer's standard.

    3.2.3 Add:

    Weatherproof non sparking guards shall be provided manufactured from brass or GRP.

    3.3 Baseplates

    3.3.1 First sentence, delete:

    "or equivalent arrangement for permanent mounting".

    Second sentence, delete:

    "or pump frames"

    3.3.4 Add:

    Epoxy grout will be used.

    3.3.11 Add:

    The baseplate shall be designed to contain pump leakage. The upper surface of the baseplate shall be sloped towards a 1" flanged drain hole. Two screwed earthing bossesshall be welded to the baseplate, at diametrically opposite corners.

    3.4 Controls and Instrumentation

    3.4.4.5.1 Add:

    The Vendor/Contractor shall advise the size and setting and shall provide the externalrelief valves describes in paragraph 2.7, for installation in the Vendor/Contractor's

    piping. Relief valves shall comply with GES J.10.

    3.4.4.6 Add:

    When the Vendor/Contractor finds the pump differential pressure is insufficient toachieve accurate flow control, the Vendor/Contractor shall supply any back pressurevalves including external types to be installed in the Vendor/Contractor's piping (see3.5.3.1 below).

    3.4.5.6 Add:

    Tropicalisation is not required.

    3.5 Piping

    3.5.1.3 Add:

    Unless specified otherwise, all piping and fittings for process sealing, flushing or oil

    lubrication shall be stainless steel.

    3.5.1.6 Add:

    Screwed connections are acceptable only on instrument lines downstream of the initialflanged isolation valve.

    3.5.3.1 Add:

    The Vendor/Contractor shall provide all process piping on the equipment as required formounting of the suction and discharge pulsation dampers, the external relief valve andwhen required, the back pressure relief valves.

    3.5.3.3 Add:

    The Vendor/Contractor shall review all piping and appurtenances up to the Owner'svessels, upstream and downstream of the equipment.

    3.6 Pulsation Suppression Devices

    3.6.1* The Vendor/Contractor shall supply and advise the size and type of pulsation suppressiondevice he proposes to provide. The Vendor/Contractor shall support his recommendationwith details of the method/calculations used to make the damper selection.

    3.6.2* Delete "The Owner and Vendor/Contractor shall mutually agree............to........... pumpingsystem", and replace by: "The Vendor/Contractor shall accept responsibility for thesuppression devices furnished".

    Add:

    The Vendor/Contractor shall, after review of the final pipework arrangement, guaranteethe satisfactory operation of the pump and system with the dampers provided.

    3.7.4.3 Add new paragraph:

    Pulsation dampers shall be designed to limit the pressure fluctuations in the manifoldsand piping to plus/minus 1½% of the operating pressure unless otherwise stated on the

    Data Sheets.

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 3.7.1 All special tools required shall be provided by the Vendor/Contractor.

    4.0 MATERIALS

    4.1 API 675 Requirements

    The Vendor/Contractor shall provide materials in accordance with paragraph 2.13 of API 675, as amended below:

    API 2.13 Materials

    2.13.1.6 * The Owner shall specify the presence of corrosive agents on the Data Sheet.

    2.13.1.9 * The Owner shall specify the presence of hydrogen sulphide on the Data Sheet.

    Materials exposed to wet hydrogen sulphide shall conform to but shall not be limited by

    NACE Standard MR-01-90 requirements. Piston rods in the packing area do not have toconform to this requirement.

    2.13.4.5.1* 100% inspection of welds is required for stainless steel material: Inspection shall be byradiography where practical. Reduced NDT for carbon steel welds shall be determinedupon the type of work to be done.

    2.13.4.5.3 Proposed connection designs shall be submitted to the Owner for approval, prior tofabrication.

    2.13.5.3 Impact testing for low temperature operation is not required unless low temperatures arespecified on the Data Sheets.

    5.0 INSPECTION

    5.1 Procedures

    5.1.1 The inspection requirements are covered by the document "General Conditions of Purchase" which forms part of the Purchase Order/Contract. Additional requirements are given below.

    5.1.2 All items of plant and equipment referenced within this specification shall be subject to inspection by theOwner or Inspection Authority.

    5.1.3 Inspection shall be in accordance with API 675 and this specification. All inspection activities to be performed, including any special requirements, shall be agreed with the Owner and shall be incorporatedwithin the agreed Quality Control Plan provided by the Vendor/Contractor. The quality control plan shall

    be coordinated with and shall include the Quality Control Plan of major Sub-Contractors. TheVendor/Contractor shall submit procedures for all applicable NDT techniques for approval by the Owner

    before production commences.

    5.1.4 All operators of NDT equipment shall have thorough knowledge of the operation of the equipment to beused and shall hold an appropriate certificate of competence, which is to be agreed by the Owner. All NDT

    procedures and qualifications shall be subject to approval by the Owner.

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 5.1.5 The Vendor/Contractor is to furnish the Owner's Inspector with all reasonable facilities, to satisfy himself

    that the equipment, including Sub-Contractor's materials, is fabricated and tested in accordance with therelevant code and this specification.

    5.1.6 Any approvals given by the Owner's Inspector and/or the Inspection Authority do not relieve theVendor/Contractor of any responsibility regarding guarantees, workmanship or compliance with the codeand this specification.

    5.2 Scope

    The inspection scope shall comply with API 675, Section 4.2 as amended below:

    Additions and Exceptions to API 675 2 nd Edition

    4.2.1.4 Add new paragraph:

    "The Owner reserves the right to observe any inspection carried out by the

    Vendor/Contractor."

    4.2.2.1* Add:

    The Vendor/Contractor shall propose in his Quality Control Plan, the parts to beexamined, the type of examination and acceptance criteria for the approval of the Owner.Where surface inspection is to be performed, the surfaces of parts are not to be painteduntil inspection is completed. To define acceptable surface discontinuities and finish"Visual Method MSS SP 55" shall be used.

    4.2.3.3* Add:

    A cleanliness inspection will not be made by the Owner prior to welding: cleanliness will be inspected immediately prior to test.

    4.2.3.4* Hardness verification is required if hydrogen sulphide is present in the pumped liquid(refer to paragraph 2.13.1.9 of API 675). Hardness testing of piston rod/plunger in thegland area is also required for all pump services.

    5.3 Nameplates

    Nameplates shall be provided complying with paragraph 2.14 of API 675, the data shall be in customary(lb, in, sec) units, unless otherwise stated by the Owner in the original invitation to tender documentation.

    6.0 TESTING

    6.1 Required Tests

    The following tests shall be performed by the Vendor/Contractor:

    (a) NDT on pump components,

    (b) Hydrostatic tests,

    (c) Mechanical run test,

    (d) Performance tests - steady state accuracy at rated conditions - flow linearity and repeatability,

    (e) NPSH (for critical conditions only - see Data Sheets),

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 (f) Complete package test (if specified on Data Sheets),

    (g) Auxiliary equipment tests (motors, Gears).

    Critical conditions requiring the execution of an NPSH test shall occur when the requirement of thecomments on API paragraph 2.1.21 in this specification cannot be met with adequate margin. Alltests shall be witnessed when carried out. The hydrostatic pressure test shall be carried out in the

    presence of Inspector(s) from the Owner's Inspection Authority.

    6.2 Test Procedures

    The Vendor/Contractor shall submit test procedures in writing to the Owner for approval prior to the startof the testing programme.

    Testing shall be carried out in compliance with paragraph 4.3 of API 675 2 nd Edition amended as follows:

    API 4.3 Tests

    4.3.1.4 Add new paragraph:

    Test items (a) (b) (c) and (d) or paragraph 6.1 above are mandatory.

    4.3.1.5 Add new paragraph:

    A mechanical run test of one (1) hour minimum duration of rated load shall be performed.

    4.3.1.6 Add new paragraph

    Test gauges shall be of the direct reading type and shall be periodically calibrated. Thecertificate of calibration shall be presented to the Owner's Inspector prior tocommencement of testing.

    4.3.2.6 Add new paragraph:

    No type of preservative or paint shall be allowed to cover any pressure containingcomponents nor any mechanical or welded joint before the pressure test is completed.

    4.3.3.4* For repeatability and linearity flow tests variation shall not exceed plus or minus 3% ofthe expected flow.

    4.3.3.6 Add new paragraph:

    When the Vendor/Contractor is unable to operate the pump at rated conditions on the performance test, he shall state this and shall give clear details of the proposed alternativeconditions in his proposal.

    4.3.4 Add new paragraph:

    A complete test, where specified, shall cover all purchased equipment including thecontract driver. The complete package shall be run for a one (1) hour period replacing themechanical run test on the pump. Correct operation of all equipment, alarms and

    shutdowns shall be demonstrated.

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 Auxiliary equipment tests for driver and gearbox, if any, shall be carried out in the sub-vendor's shops and details will be agreed prior to order replacement: this will include, asa minimum, a mechanical run of each item and a performance test of the driver.

    6.3 Test Certificates

    The following test certificates shall be provided:

    (a) The Vendor/Contractor's physical and chemical certification of steel pressure parts and forgings.

    (b) Certification for magnetic particle, dye penetrant, radiographic and ultrasonic examination.

    (c) Hydrostatic Tests.

    (d) A record of shop test data. The Vendor/Contractor shall supply certified copies of test data to theOwner before shipment.

    6.4 Startup

    6.4.1 Most pumps will be small in size (less than 20 hp (15kW)) and will be commissioned by the Owner.However, for large pumps and when required by the Owner, the Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible forthe pump startup until the unit is accepted as operation by the Owner. In this case, the Vendor/Contractorshall be responsible for the supply of a competent serviceman for the duration of the checking, startup andrun-on period.

    6.4.2 When required by the Owner, the Vendor/Contractor shall supply for startup, all lubricating fluids,including oil, grease and coolants as required by the unit. The Vendor/Contractor shall recommend theamount and type of lubrication and cooling fluids for subsequent operation.

    7.0 DOCUMENTATION

    7.1 Introduction

    7.1.1 This section covers the documentation requirements for design, materials, inspection, testing, installationand operation of the pump.

    7.2 Schedules and Reports

    7.2.1 The Vendor/Contractor shall supply with this proposal, a schedule showing submissions of all documentsfor review and approval, proposed Sub-Contractors and material procurement and a production/fabrication

    programme.

    7.2.2 The Vendor/Contractor shall submit his Quality Control Plan following the award of the PurchaseOrder/Contract.

    7.2.3 After the Purchase Order/Contract award, monthly reports on design, material procurement and production progress shall be submitted to the Owner.

    7.2.4 A co-ordination meeting shall be held within four (4) weeks of the placement of the PurchaseOrder/Contract to review all engineering, manufacturing and documentation requirements.

    7.3 Data and Calculations

    7.3.1 Project specific instructions will be issued to the Vendor/Contractor with the Purchase Order/Contract,which describes the data and calculations to be submitted, and the methods of submission.

    7.3.2 All calculations shall be carried out in clear and logical manner. The source of these formulae or methods

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 shall be clearly referenced. Computer calculations will only be acceptable if all input is shown, togetherwith calculated values of intermediate terms and factors and the computer program has been validated tothe satisfaction of the Owner.

    7.4 Drawings

    7.4.1 The required drawings shall be sent by the Vendor/Contractor to the Owner and/or the Inspection Authorityfor review and approval.

    7.4.2 The documents detailed below shall be submitted for approval/review to the Owner and to the InspectionAuthority within the periods agreed between the Owner and the Vendor/Contractor. It shall be theresponsibility of the Vendor/Contractor to ensure that the production schedule takes into accountdocumentation submission periods, plus a three week approval review period by the Owner and/or theInspection Authority. The Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for obtaining approvals from theInspection Authority.

    7.4.3 The Vendor/Contractor shall submit, as a minimum, the data and drawings as defined in API 675 Section 5

    with the additions/amendments below:

    Additions and Exception to API 675

    5.2 Proposals

    5.2.3 A statement of the maximum permissible forces and moments allowed on the pump nozzles.

    5.3 Contract Data

    5.3.1 The following requirements additional to Appendix "D" are required:-

    Driver and drive arrangement drawings,Fabrication drawings of pulsation dampers,Safety valve outline and cross-section drawings,Wiring diagrams (electrical and electronic) schematics,Pump torque per rev and mean torque/speed curves.Data books.

    7.5 Manuals

    Requirements for data books and Installation Operation and Maintenance Manuals are as follows:-

    7.5.1 Data Books

    Two (2) copies of the data book shall be provided containing the details of all tests/inspections.

    7.5.2 Installation, Operating and Maintenance Manuals

    Six (6) copies of Installation Operating and Maintenance Manuals shall be provided containing informationdefined in paragraph 5.3.6 of API 675.

    8.0 PRIOR TO SHIPMENT

    8.1 Painting

    Surface preparation and painting shall be in accordance with specification GES X.01 with colour coding ofequipment and piping in accordance with GES X.02. The system shall comply with GES X.03. TheVendor/Contractor may offer the manufacturer's own paint system, suitable for the proposed duty.

    (API 675) Rev 0 1999 8.2 Spares

    The Vendor/Contractor shall submit with his initial equipment proposal, a priced list of recommended spare parts for "Start-up" and for two (2) years operation, for review by the Owner.

    8.3 Packing and Storage

    8.3.1 This section describes the minimum requirement for the preservation and protection of reciprocating pumpsduring the sea and land transportation and storage, prior to installation.

    8.3.2 The Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for packing, preserving and securing the equipment forshipment and storage. After mechanical completion at the works, the pumps shall be cleaned and dried andsuitably preserved and packed in accordance with a packing procedure approved by the Owner.

    Additions and Exceptions to API 675

    The preparation for shipment shall comply with API 675 Section 4.4 as amended below:

    4.4.1 Delete this paragraph and replace with:

    The equipment shall be prepared for export shipment by sea. Shipment as non-containeriseddeck cargo is not permissible.

    The probable storage period will be specified in the order/enquiry and will extend from thetime of despatch to the time of unpacking at site. If the storage period is not stated, aminimum period of 24 months shall be assumed.

    4.4.3.1 Delete this paragraph and replace by:

    Painting shall comply with GES X.01, GES X.02 and GES X.03 or the manufacturers'recommended system for the duty when this has been approved by the Owner.

    4.4.6 Add new paragraph:

    The spare parts when ordered shall also be suitably boxed for export shipment.

    8.4 Shipping

    Detailed shipping arrangements will be given in the Purchase Order/Contract.

    Pumps with seals installed, drivers and all furnished auxiliaries shall be shipped fully assembled on the baseplate except that coupling spacers shall be removed, boxed and tagged and attached to the skid withany other items which are better shipped separately e.g. pulsation bottles in some cases.

    The equipment shall not leave the Vendor/Contractor's works for shipment until the release certificate has been approved by the Owner's Inspector.

    8.5 Warranty

    8.5.1 The Vendor/Contractor shall provide manufacturer's written guarantees of the pumps performance.

    8.5.2 The Vendor/Contractor shall warrant all materials and services supplied against any defect for a minimumof 12 months after commissioning or 24 months from the date of delivery to site, whichever is the shorter

    period, or for the period stipulated in the Purchase Order/Contract.

    8.5.3 Should any item be found defective, the Vendor/Contractor shall be responsible for all costs associatedwith restoring the equipment to the standard specified by the Purchase Order/Contract.
