An absorbing, original and ascinating book or anyone who is interested

in the history o or cltre, interwoven with the history o western philosophyand the imaginary story o Sophie and Hilde. In order to solve the mysteries that

are a part o Sophies world, we need an nderstanding o Eropean philosophy.

Who is Hilde Mller Knag? Why does Sophie keep coming across Hi ldes things? Why does she receive Hildes mail? The story ends in Hildes garden in the small

town o Lillesand on t he soth coast o Norway. Or does it? Perhaps this is whereit begins? Throgh her pe rsal o letters rom a mysterios philosopher,Alberto Knox, who introdces her to the ideas o Eropes great thinkers,

Sophie gradally acqires the k nowledge she needs to solve the mysteries

    srronding her.

The book is a story or teenagers, a thriller and a history o philosophy all in one.

    The Orange Girl

My father died eleven years ago. I was only four then,

I never thought Id hear from him again, but now werewriting a book together.

To Georg Red, his ather is no more than a shadow, a

distant memory. Bt then one day his grandmotherdiscovers some papers sted into the lining o an old

red pshchair. The pages are a letter to Georg, writtenjst beore his ather died, and a story, TheOrangeGirl.

Bt The Orange Girl is no ordinary story it is a riddle rom

the past centering arond an incident in his athers

yoth. One day he boarded a tram and was captivatedby a beatil girl standing in the aisle, cltching a hge

paper bag o lscios-looking oranges. Sddenly the

tram gave a jolt and he stmbled orward, sending the

    oranges ying in all directions.

In an ot-o-the-way bookshop Joakim comes across a

magical Advent calendar, which e nables him to ollowElisabeths jorney to Bethlehem. Her odyssey, which

takes her throgh Erope and Asia Minor, is also a

jorney throgh history. Who has made this strange

calendar? Can it be the mysterios ower seller in themarketplace? Do the brie notes on the scraps o paper

inside the calendar reer to the Elisabeth who disap-peared rom the town many years ago? Perhaps. Btthere is another Elisabeth too, the one in the pictre

taken in ront o St Peters in Rome. Can it be the same

Elisabeth as the girl who got lost in the throng when

she and her mother were ot doing their Christmasshopping? On his jorney, which takes him a ll the way

back to the stable in Bethlehem, Joakim is introdced to

Eropean cltre and history. Ecclesiastical history is

interwoven with myths and legends, making the book aascinating read.

The world is very old, they say. But it seldomlasts more than a hundred years. We are theones who grow old.

With these words Gaarder sets the tone or t he collection, which was his literary debt. The stories deal with

ordinary people who have been prooted rom their dailylives and pshed to the brink . The stories toch onexistential sbjects, qestions and ideas to which the

    athor retrns in sbseqent novels.

The collection comprises eleven short stories. They are woven together by short, thoght-provoking

    sketches.

This book may be regarded as a kind o overtre toGaarders sbseqent writing, even thogh the stories

have down-beat perspectives in shar p contrast to his

    later novels.

In his Conessions the chrch ather, Agstine,

mentions that or many years he lived with a mistresswhom he loved deeply and who bore him h is one and

    only child.

Their relationship ended when Agstine embarked on apios lie o celibacy or the sa ke o his sols salvation.

In Vita Brevis, which is sbtitled Floria Aemilias Letter toAurel Augustine, Jostein Gaarder has rnished thismistress with a n ame, a voice and a physical presence.

He calls her Floria Aemilia and pens the letters to

Agstine, jst as she might have written them ater

reading his conessions some twelve years ater theysplit p.

How can two lovers be reconciled to a lost etern ity?

Frank, a Norwegian evoltionary biologist, isensconced in a hotel room in Madrid, where he is

writing a letter to his estranged wie, Vera, to tell her o

his meeting with a pecliar Spanish cople, Ana and

Jos. To make Vera nderstand how mch this enco-nter has meant to him, he has to begin by telling her

o the time he spent on Taveni in the Fiji Islands inJanary 1998.

The story really begins with the Big Bang, when the

niverse was created, bt it also begins with what Vera

wrote to Frank on a postcard rom Barcelona in 1992.Eqally, the story begins on the qayside in Cdiz one

A tatly written satire centred on mans ollies and

endring vanity, this book rther attests to JosteinGaarders command o bafing, cnningly contrived

intriges that lend themselves to a wide range o
