Defining languages withsingleton/geminate contrasts

For the purposes of this study, a language issaid to have a particular singleton vs.geminate contrast when (i) the contrast is oneof duration/quantity; (ii) the contrast definesminimal or near-minimal pairs; and (iiia)geminates are morpheme-internal; or (iiib)gemination itself is a morphologicalexponent.

Singleton/Geminate Contrasts:Phonetic correlates

The most salient phonetic correlate ofphonological contrasts between singletonand geminate consonants is closureduration. On average, long stops havebetween 1.5-3 times the closure durationof short stops in careful speech.(Ladefoged & Maddieson 1996:92)

Universals in geminate inventories

A number of universals or universaltendencies have been suggested forgeminate inventories. Most of these areimplicational universals, and areclaimed to follow from phonetic and/orphonological markedness principles.

Some Proposed Implicational Universals

If there are geminate voiced stops then there aregeminate voiceless stops. (Thurgood 1993)

If there is a geminate contrast, then there are geminatevoiceless stops. (Podesva 2002)

If there are geminate sonorants, then there are geminatesonorants of lower sonority. (Podesva 2002)

A universal tendency

In languages with a contrast betweenlong and short consonants, there is astrong tendency for the number of longconsonants to be less than or equal tothe number of short consonants. (Blevins2005)

Diversity in geminate inventories

A pilot survey of the world’s languages,however, shows that there is greatdiversity in the composition of geminateinventories. In some languages, allsingletons contrast with geminates. Inothers, only a handful of consonantsshow a length contrast. (Blevins 2004, 2005)

The initial survey shows counter-examples for all proposedabsolute implicational universals:

Diversity and Implicational Universals

The initial survey also shows a counter-example tothe strong tendency for geminate inventories to besmaller, or the same size as singleton inventories.

In Finnish, each geminate is paired with acorresponding singleton, except for /ŋ:/. Thegeminate velar nasal /ŋ:/ occurs only intervocalically,where it is the weak grade of /ŋk/. However, sinceshort /ŋ/ occurs only preceding /k/ in Finnish, it isnormally considered an allophone of /n/.

Diversity and Geminate Origins

The most significant finding of this pilotstudy, however, is a potential correlationbetween geminate inventory and historicalsource of geminate consonants. Givenmultiple pathways of geminate evolution,it may be possible to explain the diversityof geminate inventories in terms of theirdistinct historical origins.

Geminate Origins andEvolutionary Phonology

If verified, this finding would support acentral hypothesis of EvolutionaryPhonology: namely, that many commonsound patterns result from commonphonetically motivated sound change. Inthe case of geminate inventories, differentinventory subtypes may be viewed asrecurrent or common sound patterns.

A database of geminate inventories

In order to assess the status of theseuniversal tendencies and explanations forinventory diversity, a database of geminateinventories is being compiled. Currently,the database includes 73 languagesrepresenting 22 different families and 39genera. Singleton and geminateinventories are included, as well asgeminate gaps, and historical origins,where known.

Conclusions

There appears to be a correlation betweengeminate inventory and historical sourceof geminate consonants. Given multiplepathways of geminate evolution, it ispossible to explain many aspects of thediversity of geminate inventories in termsof their historical origins.

Future Research: Universal Tendencies

As the database grows, and more ‘origin’fields are filled in, we will be in a betterposition to assess the role of universaltendencies in shaping geminate inventories.For example, at present, 21/73 languages lackrhotic geminates. However, in some of theselanguages, small geminate inventories are aconsequence of local assimilations which didnot target rhotics, and in others, the origins ofgeminates are unknown.

Future Research: Rare Inventory Types

As the database grows, we will also be in abetter position to assess the nature of rareinventory types. For example, at presentSomali is the only language in the databasethat has voiced geminate obstruents, but lacksvoiceless ones. Is this a direct consequence ofhistorical progressive voice assimilation inconsonant clusters at morpheme boundaries, -itself a rare sound pattern?
