TABLE OF CONTENTS
Reading has been defined as “decoding graphicmaterial to the phonemic patterns of spoken language which we have already mastered whenreading is begun.” To put it another way, readingconsists of coming back to speech through thegraphic symbols. In short, meanings reside in thesounds of the spoken language. Speaking a language is the necessary first step to acquiring theability to read a language with meaning.
The reading lessons in German III are designed tofamiliarize you with material (signs, words, phrases) you are likely to see and hear in a German-speaking country. Included is a section on the pronunciation of German names, as well as sectionswith some typical expressions and proverbs.
The reading materials for German III are allrecorded at the end of the program. You can dothese readings as it is most convenient for you. They can be done along with the units (roughly at aone to two ratio) or done entirely after completingthe full 30 units. Instructions on how to proceedwith the readings are contained in the audio portionof the course.
