/Course Objectives/
Overview
The original theme of this course has always been to explore and discover
different aspects of the city of Tokyo which are not always apparent to a casual
observer. However, the plan to maintain this course theme is confronting
difficulty under the current COVID-19 pandemic situation.
In fact, the fundamental aim of this course is to create a space for students from
diverse backgrounds to work together. This goal is especially important at this
difficult time. The pandemic has brought exceptional challenges to your student
lives. It altered everyone's daily routines in various ways. Many of you must be
facing financial pressures, social isolation, and anxieties about both short and
long-term plans. Some of you would have been in Tokyo with us this semester
as exchange students. Even those who are in Tokyo are deprived of
opportunities to make friends and communicate with classmates.
I would like to take advantage of this course to provide everyone an opportunity
to share information, exchange thoughts about experiences during the previous
semester and the summer. We can also exchange and develop ideas on how to
improve our communications and strengthen ties to cope with the ongoing
situation in better ways.
We will also develop class projects in pursuit of the original theme of this course
"Exploring Tokyo: Visible/Invisible City ” ; however, the actual means for
achieving the purpose will have to be worked out once the instructor has some
idea about who (local UT students/ exchange students) and how many are
registered from which locations/timezones.

/Course Objectives/ Overview
The objective of this course is to study how 'Asia' has been imagined and
constructed by Japanese and how 'Japan' has been imagined and constructed in
different parts of Asia between the late 19th century and today. By examining
changes and continuities in different views and typologies of mutual perceptions in

modern history, students will learn how images of the Self and the Other are inter-
related and often serve as an instrument for the justification of certain social,
economic, or diplomatic policies. Through a combination of readings (home, in-
class), lectures, and discussions, we will approach the broader issue of Japanese
views of Asia and Asian views of Japan. In addition, readings on case studies will
introduce and discuss well-known and lesser-known examples of such mutual
perceptions.

/Course Objectives/
Overview
Based on studying the theory of “law and development” as well as examining
practice of “law reform technical cooperation, this seminar advances study of
the rule of law in transition. The transitional economies and post-conflict
countries require establishment of the rule of law by effective judiciary as non-
violent dispute processing for peace-building. In the transition stage, however,
ADR (alternative dispute resolution), such as arbitration, conciliation,
mediation and negotiation is useful not only in domestic, but also transnational
dispute processing. In particular, “access to justice” must be enhanced for
human security and prevention of violence. The South-East Asian region, in
particular, Vietnam and Cambodia will be taken as case studies. English will be
used as a common language. This seminar will be conducted together with one
of the graduate/undergraduate seminar of Department of Area Studies.

講義題目/Subtitle Climate Change and the Law
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
Characterized as the ‘defining issue of our age’, climate change has been a major
international concern since the late 1980s. Fairly described as a ‘super wicked
problem ’ , it poses a complex, polycentric, and seemingly intractable policy
11 31032019
challenge. This course explores how laws, regulations and court decisions have
burgeoned in response to climate change, at various levels, from cities through
the international sphere. Through interactive lectures and case studies, students
examine both the practical and theoretical aspects of topics such as: the role of
science in climate change lawmaking, the growing perception of courtrooms as
a key battleground in the public debate over climate change around the world,
the emergence of climate disaster law as a new field of regulation, climate
geoengineering governance, and so forth. Throughout the semester, students
not only acquire a robust understanding of the main legal challenges raised by
climate change; they also engage with in-depth analyses of selected issues
discussed from the critical perspective.

/Teaching Methods
Due to the situation with Covid-19, this course will be conducted entirely online.
There will be live online short interactive lectures followed by group and
classroom discussions based upon pre-assigned readings and lists of questions.
Classes also include team-based learning activities such as case studies, law cases
analysis, scenario analysis and a final role-play simulation. However, as not all
PEAK students may be able to attend these, it will be possible to obtain all
information and undertake all activities asynchronously i.e. there will be no
penalty to students who cannot attend the online class.
Both ITC-LMS and Google Classroom will be used:

講義題目/Subtitle Terrorism: A Critical History
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
This class examines the rise of terrorism--both as a tactic and rhetorical device-
-following World War II to the present day. Different definitions of terrorism in
political discourse and international law will be discussed. Several case studies
will be highlighted, included the Franco-Algerian War, Apartheid in South
Africa, Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland, and the rise of Al Qaeda and ISIL. We will
study terrorism using anthropology, psychology, political science and history. In
addition to understanding the causes and motivations for state and non-state
sponsored terrorism, we will investigate responses to terrorism: including
examples of transitional justice mechanisms (South Africa and Northern
Ireland) and armed intervention (Iraq and Afghanistan). This course will give
students a better understanding of the role of terrorism in shaping modern
politics across the world. The course will include short readings, and students
will conduct a research project on a topic of their choice.

講義題目/Subtitle Reading Japanese Novels: The Dilemma of the Modern and Beyond
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives
/ Overview
This course is designed to give students an opportunity to acquaint
themselves with a range of Japanese novels written between the late 19th
century and the present. We will place a particular focus on how the Japanese
writers struggled to come to terms with the idea of the modern, and explore the
nature of the dilemma these writers faced in their attempt to incorporate
modernity. Starting with the pioneering writers of the Meiji period, we will
move on to the writers of the later periods and will also deal with the new
writings of the younger generation in contemporary Japan. Some of the works
will be examined in detail, using different critical approaches to analyse their
thematic construction, structural characteristics and stylistic features. Most of
the texts dealt with in this course are widely read works by well-known authors,
but I am hoping to introduce some new readings. I also hope that the class
experience will provide an opportunity for students to gain a critical perspective
on the state of Japanese society. Students will be strongly encouraged to
exchange ideas.

講義題目/Subtitle Critical Approaches to East Asia
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
This course will encourage students to rethink what they know about East Asia
by introducing three pressing theoretical problems that we must confront:
history, geography, and subjectivity. Using these three categories, the course
will examine various approaches to these problems by looking at the choices that
authors (historians, poets, philosophers, film directors, artists) make when
writing/thinking about East Asia and how these choices shape the meanings of
the present and the possibilities of the future. By drawing attention to these
inevitable problems the course aims to explore what is at stake when studying
East Asia and how the recognition of these problems might open up the
possibility for something different.

Overview
When children read stories, they absorb cultural ideas about what childhood is
and what it means to grow up. This course examines how children’s literature
enculturates its readers. Students will read and discuss children’s books from a
wide variety of cultural and historical contexts, along with selections from
influential children’s literature scholars. The course has three objectives: to
familiarize students with key concepts in the study of world children’s literature
from the 1860s to the present, to equip them with analytical tools for
interpreting visual and verbal texts, and to help them recognize differing
cultural conceptions of childhood and growth.

/Course Objectives/
Overview
This course will cover a number of fundamental topics in chemistry that are of
direct relevance to Environmental Sciences. The main subjects covered will be:
1) Reaction kinetics and mechanism
The rates and mechanisms of chemical reactions have wide ranging effects in
many important environmental processes.
2) Photochemistry
Ultimately all the energy that drives processes on earth comes from the sun. The
ways in which molecules capture this energy and convert it is a key concept in
understanding many environmentally important processes as well as the
possibility of harvesting the sun's energy as a renewable energy source.
3) Introduction to atmospheric chemistry
The Earth's atmosphere is a giant chemical reactor, home to thousands of
33 31032019
different chemical reactions which determine its composition and our ability to
live on earth. The key aspects of chemistry in the troposphere and stratosphere
will be introduced.

講義題目/Subtitle Mathematical optimization in Operations Research
34 31032019
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
Operations Research (O.R.) is the application of scientific and mathematical
methods to the study and analysis of problems involving complex systems
(according to The Institute for Operations Research and the Management
Sciences). Among many mathematical methods and tools in O.R., the most
fundamental is the concept of optimization. It is to search for the best choice
among possible alternatives under certain conditions and constraints. In the
mathematical language, it is to maximize or minimize a given objective function
by controlling decision variables under the set of constraints. Optimization
theory is also a part of applied mathematics, and is widely employed in academic
disciplines that deal with mathematical modeling of human decision making. In
particular, it plays an essential role in economics for its descriptions of economic
decision making and valuation.
In this lecture, students will learn the theories of mathematical optimization as
methods in O.R. The lecture starts with providing an overview of O.R. with an
emphasis on optimization methods. It moves on to the theory of static
optimization. The third part of the lecture discusses the theory of dynamic
optimization.

講義題目/Subtitle The “Green Economy” Contested: Perspectives from Ecological Economics,
Political Ecology & Social Movements
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
Over the last decades, the world is facing unprecedented global environmental
challenges – biodiversity loss, climate change, deforestation, pollution, health
risks. This ecological planetary crisis is in turn underpinned by socio-economic
disparities and inequalities across groups and regions. As a response, an
international sustainable development agenda grounded on a “green economy”
that can tackle both environmental and socio-economic challenges has emerged,
resulting in a variety of environmental governance forms and policies. Yet
tackling global environmental and sustainability problems ultimately depends
on solving ecological distribution conflicts across regions, groups and over
generations. This in turn requires understanding the social conflicts emerging
from the unfair access to natural resources and the unjust burdens of
environmental degradation, from which social mobilization processes of a
variety of groups and communities across the globe emerge.
The course introduces key concepts and approaches from the fields of political
ecology and ecological economics from which to develop a critical perspective
on international environmental governance and the “green economy”, so as to
understand social mobilization processes related to the environment. Ecological
distribution conflicts, environmental racism, environmental justice, the
environmentalism of the poor, ecological debt, agroecology, and ecofeminism
are some of the concepts explored in depth throughout the course. The United
Nations’ and other global environmental initiatives, particularly in agriculture,
biodiversity and climate change, are analyzed in connection to social
mobilization processes for environmental justice from both the North and the
South.

講義題目/Subtitle Art and Feminisms in the post-1968 Japan
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
Course objective: Does feminism exist in Japan? With the international gender
equality survey putting Japan at 121 in the world, you may think it has always
been like that here. But NO, there has been a variety of feminisms in Japan.
This course will first focus on the Women’s Liberation (Uman libu) movement,
which came out of the 1968 student movement and the counter-culture
movement. Secondly, we will look into the feminisms since the late 1970s to
the present, and review some important feminist art practices, theories and
exhibitions in the 1990s. Lastly, we will examine the current situation in Japan
and try to find ways to address and change it through cultural practices.
Course overview: Starting with the student movement in 1968, this course
surveys the rise and fall of feminisms in Japan till the present, with special
emphasis on its relation with cultural and artistic movements. Then we will
focus on ‘here and now ’ to examine the current gender-related issues in
Japan, and discuss how to change the situation. We will have guest artists who
are engaged in social- and feminism related art practices, in addition to my
own work in the past, covering issues such as war, violence, memories, and
sexuality. There will be a workshop on Butoh dance.

授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
In this course we will explore multiculturalism in Japan from both historical and
contemporary perspectives. We will start by reading about and discussing
historical policies that have promoted the ideologies of Japanese homogeneity
and patriarchy in the modern era. We will then take a closer look at the everyday
experiences of members of various minority groups including Ainu, Okinawan
and Buraku peoples, Chinese and Korean permanent residents born in Japan,
Nikkei Brazilian and Peruvian communities, foreign migrant workers, and
refugees. Furthermore, we will explore issues relating to linguistic diversity,
gender, and sexuality, and think about how such issues are negotiated in various
social situations and interpersonal relationships in Japan today. Over the
semester, students will conduct individual research, possibly involving
fieldwork, on an issue of their choice relating to multiculturalism, and complete
a final research project.

All classes will be conducted via video conference using Zoom, although you will
not be required to have your camera on at all times if you happen to have a slow
internet connection. (You'll probably want both your download and upload
speeds to be consistently above 10 Mbps. You can check your speeds at the
following site: https://www.speedtest.net/.)
Typical class sessions will involve a brief lecture and class discussion on that
week’s reading assignments. For most sessions, you will have a choice about
what articles to read; during class, you will be divided into small groups to
discuss what you read. We will also have time for student pair-work and group-
work in which you can share individual or group research projects to each other.

講義題目/Subtitle Introduction to Generative Approaches to Second Language Acquisition
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
This course introduces students to generative approaches to second language
acquisition (i.e., studies of second language learner’s grammatical knowledge
based on formal linguistics). The focus will be Japanese learners' acquisition of
English grammar, including the forms and meanings of words and phrases, in
the framework of the Minimalist Program and Distributed Morphology. The
course begins by highlighting the purposes of second language acquisition
research and the relevance of formal linguistics to modeling learner grammar
analyzing observable data. While learning to use the tree diagrams to analyze
English sentences produced / accepted by native speakers and second language
learners, students will study the components of words and sentences, such as
lexical and functional categories in phrase structures, roots and categories of
each word, and the linking between forms and meanings.

講義題目/Subtitle Japan and the United States: A Tale of Two Publics
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
In this course, we seek to better understand public opinion: how Japanese and
Americans think -- about themselves, their politics and the world -- and how
attitudes, collectively expressed, influence electoral and policy outcomes. The
seminar is organized into three questions. The first ponders the meaning of
“ public opinion, ” examined from Euro-American and Confucian-Japanese
perspectives, and looks at theories that seek to explain how publics process
information, arrive at judgments and express themselves. The second asks how
public opinion is measured. Here, we consider how individuals respond (and
don’t) to surveys and discuss how to critically evaluate poll-related information
in the media. The final part of the seminar examines mass opinion on domestic
and international affairs, allowing us to compare Japanese and American self-
and other-images; patriotism, nationalism and immigration; postures toward
security policy and China; social values and trust; and attitudes toward
democracy and electoral politics.

授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
This course examines contemporary issues in the international economy with a
focus on political foundations of globalization. After several decades of
deepening integration of national economies, globalization has faltered recently
as governments have changed their policy behaviors and become less willing to
cooperate with each other. What are the causes of backlash to globalization?
What will the future of globalization look like?
This course covers a wide range of topics in international political economy,
including trade policies, the effects of global value chains, foreign direct
investment, and migration in order to understand the changing structure of the
global economy and its political consequences. It also looks at the relationship
between globalization and the development of populism in various countries.

The Body, Mind and Japanese Culture in Global Context
授業の目標、概要
/Course Objectives/
Overview
This course explores the body, mind, the environment (culture), and our
perceptions and interactions with them. I will introduce readings and my current
observations from the field of Contemplative Studies, which is an emerging
interdisciplinary field dedicated to the study of contemplative
practice/experience, and of its applications to fields such as medicine, education,
business, art and social justice.
We will engage with contemplative practice using both first person and third
person methods. The main focus will be on Buddhist-derived practices that have
been made applicable to modern life in the West and in Japan, although students
are encouraged to research and bring other wisdom traditions into the
discussion. The core qualities that these contemplative practices cultivate are
mindfulness and compassion, and we seek to both understand, embody and
observe these qualities throughout the course. The first person perspective
means that we will engage in direct experience of certain meditative or somatic
techniques - this may be in the form of fieldwork outside of class, as well as some
in-class workshops. We will explore our feelings, thoughts and sensations, and
express them in a communal environment. The third person perspective means
that we will also learn critically and reflectively about the experience from various
disciplines.
This includes the cultural, philosophical, educational and historical trajectories,
and their neuroscientific and psychological analyses. I will draw on my
background in anthropology and Japanese educational theory, although students
are encouraged to bring in perspectives and conduct their own research from
their respective fields of interest.
Ultimately, we hope to expand our understanding and experience of the
body/mind and self/other beyond such dichotomies that bind modern social life.
63 31032019
We hope to discuss the relevance of mindfulness and compassion to the
contemporary world; to living peacefully in and with other cultures, beings and
places, as well as with one's self.
