The last few years have brought a subtle change to the world of Southern Gospel music. While single-night concerts continue to be a staple of the genre’s live appearances, multi-day events are becoming more prevalent. IMC, under the direction of Landon Beene, is a key force in that shift in concert promoting philosophies.

Recently Landon sat down with Singing News’ Danny Jones to discuss IMC’s history, it’s goals and the strategy that has allowed IMC to emerge as a leader in Southern Gospel music.

Singing News (SN): What exactly is IMC? Landon Beene (LB): IMC stands for Innovation Management & Consulting. IMC is currently and primarily a promotion company of major events –approximately 80 concerts a year – as well as offering management services for a number of clients specific to the music industry.

SN: Who are the founders/owners/operators of IMC?LB: Nathan Goble and myself. As in most companies there must be a visionary and there must be management. I fill the visionary role and Nathan fills the management role.

SN: Why was IMC started and how did it become what it is today?LB: IMC was started as a management

and consulting company primarily and exclusively for The Booth Brothers in 2008 and 2009. In 2008 Michael and Ronnie Booth called me to assist them with some business objectives as well as promotion. I asked them why they called a person in manufacturing about management and promotion and they told me “because I had a great business ethic and seemed to think outside of the box.”Long story short, the first tour was then planned for The Booth Brothers to the west coast and they saw a huge success.

After the term of that exclusive relationship with The Booth Brothers, we

at IMC decided to use our resources to start creating strategic opportunities for Southern Gospel concerts and events for the purpose of maximizing opportunity. The initial stages of the business model would only include a small roster of similar artists in style and popularity for the purpose of cross marketing and building a system for promotion.

I saw the need of a management andpromotion company with an artist’s perspective. After spending 10 years on the road with my family, The Beene Family, I learned the business from an artist’s perspective, which seems to be

interpreted quite differently than that of a traditional record or promotion company.During my time on the road with The Beene Family, I was also building Tribute Media Source from the ground up, which has now become a premier CD/DVD manufacturing company, offering not only manufacturing services but also consulting in imaging, design, and now, a full print company.

SN: Each company, regardless of its role in Southern Gospel music, has a particular method or plan for their business. What is the overall operating philosophy of IMC?LB: We want to offer consistent results of quality for the fans and priority treatment for the artists. If you set the artists up to win, they will give the fans a good program. Although IMC has become a huge promotion company, we often work quietly and in the “behind the scenes” atmosphere.

This isn’t about us; we don’t need to be on stage. That is the job of the artists. The fans come to listen to the music, not a promoter! We strive to give the fans a great experience from the first point of contact of an email blast, a mail piece, national ad, right up to the point they enter the event venue, and when they

walk out. If we can accomplish that and give the artist a great platform to be at their best, then that is a great night.

SN: With that in mind, what can a concert attendee expect when he or she attends an IMC concert?LB: A great program with the best our music has to offer…a quality program focused on the music, the artist and the message of the Gospel. We will never take advantage of an attendee by a disturbing surprise or something that is unpleasant and unexpected. We have learned that fans of this music will travel literally hundreds of miles and they want to know that their time with their favorite artists will be maximized.

SN: What, in your opinion, makes the work of IMC a leader in Gospel music’s future?LB: IMC is able to enter into a concert or event opportunity at the level of the artist because of our unique relationship with the artist. Most times we work in a partnership with the artist, a much different route than a traditional artist/promoter relationship.

A traditional promoter may call a booking agent to inquire about an artist for a particular market or the city where

he or she lives because they may “like the music” of the artist. But we instead look at the opportunity and potential of the night. We rarely promote a concert just to promote another night. In fact, we’ve turned down opportunities in great markets with great artists because they don’t fit our business model.

For instance, you will never see IMC promote a concert in a city just one time. We will look for an opportunity to come back with different artists. Nor will you come to an IMC event where you won’t have an opportunity to hear about a major event coming to that region, or about a Gospel music cruise that is also managed by IMC. In any given concert or event, there is a great opportunity to promote another quality-driven concert or event. This is how and why we can justify being involved in so many different events and concerts during a calendar year.

SN: When IMC chooses an artist to appear on its events, what does IMC look for in that artist?LB: In multi-artist settings we look for artists that work well together and compliment each other while still offering a diverse program. The programming is the first element considered.

In a multi-artist environment there are many elements. First, we will always try and program the artists who are consistent in our “brand” and other events. If we are going to be a part in the development of an artist, we want to make sure there is a bigger picture in mind.

In single-artist concert settings, we look for artists who are capable of standing on

LANDON WITH THE BOOTH BROTHERS DURING FIRST IMC-PROMOTED TOUR.

5

their own without a supporting artist as well as the popularity to support the night.

SN: What are the events IMC is currently promoting?LB: Branson Praisefest, Praisefest Niagara Falls, the new Southwest Gospel Music Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, Cruise with Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, the Blue Mountain Gospel Music Festival in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, the Gospel Music Celebration Cruises, and the Jubilee Tours. We are also in the planning stages of approximately 3-4 more major events.

Our plan is to unveil a major event every year for the next 3-4 years. In addition to what is in the works, we always try to keep a certain amount of time and margin open for great unique opportunities such as the transition to take over ownership of Garden Spot Promotions.

SN: It’s been more than a year since IMC took over a promotion company that for decades has been touted as one of Southern Gospel music’s most successful. Does IMC have additional plans of buying existing concert organizations as it did Garden Spot Promotions?LB: We don’t at the moment, although we will always explore each and every opportunity. The Garden Spot transaction was simply a great fit for IMC. Twila Rohrer contacted us in the summer of 2011 and indicated she wanted to spend more time with family and wanted to lessen her workload and responsibilities.

Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has always been a strong market for Southern Gospel music. We knew that with the future plans – some of which are just now rolling out

– we had in the works for events on the east coast, controlling that market would be very beneficial. We also saw a value for the entire industry to make sure that the future of Garden Spot Promotions and the market of central Pennsylvania would continue to stay strong for Southern Gospel music.

This transition has been great, and has proved to be a wonderful asset for IMC. Twila and Dale Rohrer are still very involved and are our biggest supporters – and we love it that way!

SN: What else does IMC do?LB: Although we are primarily a promotion company, we try to be as efficient as possible by utilizing our staff in the management of things in which we excel. We handle billing for many artists who manufacture their music with Tribute Media but also want to sell their products wholesale to distribution companies, as well as handling the billing for some record companies. IMC will also from time to time make an investment in the recording of music albums or videos of an artist that we are promoting. For example, we were the record company for Ryan Seaton’s debut album that was nominated for Inspirational Album and Song of the year by the GMA. We are currently in the planning and recording stage of a new a cappella project with The Martins, and also working on several new Jubilee products. In addition to the record company division of IMC, we also manage the Jubilee brand and tour for Booth Brothers, Greater Vision and Legacy Five.

Lastly, we are very involved in the cruise business. We are fully operational to manage and do reservations in-house for our cruise products such as the first “Cruise with Ernie Haase & Signature Sound” coming up in February of 2013 as well as the management and promotion of the Gospel Music Celebration Cruises.

SN: Finally, what message do you want to send to the readers?LB: As good as promotion is, and as good as the artist may be, and as good as the message is, the future of Gospel music is strongly impacted by the people attending. Our fans need to bring people to these concerts! We have very little radio and less and less exposure of our music in the church, so our only outlet for awareness of this music is word of mouth and concert exposure.

I was 6-years old when my parents first took me to a Gospel concert. You hear people say “Bring your kids…bring your grandchildren” from stage all the time—and you hear this so much that it is almost ignored. But I am a result of parents taking their child to hear Gospel music, so I know it works!

We want people to join our team! We are committed to bringing you the music. Now we need the attendees committed to bringing their friends, kids and grandchildren!

To say that Zig Ziglar influenced the Booth Brothers is an understatement. We’ll go so far as to say if there was no Zig Ziglar, there would be no Booth Brothers.

It was April 1996 when I heard Zig’s tape series entitled, “The Qualities Of Success”. It literally changed my life. Then I bought his book, “Over The Top”. Not only did it give me the motivation and inspiration that I needed, but through his goal setting steps, I was able to assemble specific plans of action that brought tremendous benefits to me personally and professionally.

A lot of people’s lives are not that fouled up, just a little out of focus. Zig helped

me bring my life into focus. Take a magnifying glass and wave it around in the air and it won’t accomplish anything. However, take the same magnifying glass and hold it still over a pile of leaves while it catches the rays from the sun and soon, you’ll have a fire. That’s what can happen when we bring our lives into focus (Proverbs 21:5a).

There are many quotes from Zig that have influenced me but one that really stands out is, “ You can have everything in life you want, if you’ll just help enough other people get what they want”. When we walk on stage, we must serve the audience. They are not there to feed our ego. That’s not why the Lord brought

them there. We serve them best when we lift up Christ. He is the answer to any issue or need they have.

That brings to mind another of Zig’s quotes, “If you treat everyone as though they are hurting, you are treating the majority in the proper manner”. Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble”. Only God knows all the pain that is represented in the audience we’re singing to. What an unspeakable privilege we have as artists to be an ambassador of Christ. Proverbs 12:25 says, “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad”.

The reality is Zig taught the truth’s from God’s Word. He taught it very effectively and with great conviction.

God called Zig home on November 28, 2012 just two days after he and Mrs. Ziglar’s 66th wedding anniversary.

I encourage you to go to your local bookstore or Ziglar.com and invest in Zig’s books and recordings. “You are what you are and where you are because of what has gone into your mind. You can change what you are and where you are by changing what goes into your mind.” The Apostle Paul admonished us to renew our minds and I encourage you to follow his admonition.

With a great 2012 behind us, we’re looking ahead into 2013, and expecting another great, busy year!

January takes us to the Southwest, with concerts in Arizona and Southern California. Later in the month, we’ll head to Florida for some “Jubilee Tour”, concerts and our first-ever 7-night Caribbean Cruise. (It’s sold-out, and we’re already taking reservations for 2014!)

In February, you’ll see some of our favorite Annual concerts on the schedule, including Waco, Texas, along with Marion and Hoopeston, Illinois.

Our new CD releases in March, with new songs written by Rodney Griffin, Chris Allman, Jim Brady, and other great writers, and we can’t wait for you to hear it! We’ll also head to Branson, Missouri in March for Praisefest Branson! If you thought last year’s event was great, you’re really going to love what we’ve got planned for 2013!

April will take us from coast to coast, with concerts in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Visalia, California, and almost everywhere in between!

The rest of the year is already shaping up to be just as busy with great events like the first Praisefest Niagara Falls in May, a “Jubilee” concert in Indiana in June, and our “In Touch” Alaska Cruise with

Dr. Charles Stanley in July. As far as we know, the “In Touch” Alaska Cruise is the only Christian-Charter Cruise to Alaska in 2013. That means the entire ship has been chartered for our guests.

The Brumley Memorial Sing takes place in August, as well as the 23rd Annual “Evening with Greater Vision” in Temple, Texas. The National Quartet Convention meets in September for the last time in Louisville, Kentucky, before relocating to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee in 2014. You can expect it to be one of the biggest and best events ever put together by the NQC...and you don’t want to miss it!

October will be here before you know it, and we’ll be heading back to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to be a part of their “Harvest Celebration”. We don’t have the full schedule yet, but we’re planning to be there for two days during the event.

In November, people from all over the country will gather for our “flagship” event... the Great Smokies Praisefest in Sevierville, Tennessee! Make your reservations early to get a seat for this event...It’s always a sell-out!

You’ve probably heard about the “Jubilee Christmas Tour” that took place in December of 2012. We’re already planning to expand it for 2013, with stops in at least twelve cities across the country, from coast to coast! Watch our email updates for more information. Speaking of our email updates…if you don’t already receive them, sign up at www.greatervisionmusic.com . It’s FREE, and once every year, we give away a really nice trip to someone who receives our Updates! This year, it might be you!

We hope to see you in 2013, and we hope you know we really appreciate your prayers and your friendship!

Greetings! This year, we officially crossed 600,000 miles on the bus. Some of those started out our fall tour in the quaint little tourist town of Branson, MO. Silver Dollar City opened their gates to thousands, and more than 5,000 came to see us!

That weekend took us from Alabama to Gatlinburg, and left us at the shotgun start of NQC. Who knew we’d find ourselves with an extra voice? TaRanda Greene made the trip to Louisville into the welcoming arms of the NQC audience and to their pleasant surprise, sang with the group. The culmination of Kim’s amazing heritage in this industry, mixed with TaRanda’s unexpected attendance and striking vocals left the entire arena speechless. TaRanda continues to appear as a guest on select dates.

Upon our family’s induction in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, we decided to launch our first endeavor into short-form visual arts, known as a concept video. Connie brought “I Wish We’d All Been Ready” to the table, and after hearing Michael Sykes’ arrangement, Michael was approached by a Nashville director. The two shared their vision and used the Hopper Home Place and hometown spots as shooting locations. “I Wish We’d All Been Ready” proved to be a real responsive work of art and is now played in closing, as a part of the invitation, at our concerts.

Dean recently received an email from a neighbor in their new subdivision whom he’d never met. This lady had been struggling with the faith of her father who was raised a Christian but turned to a more analytical way of thinking in his older age. Her parents have attended Hopper concerts for years. (this turned out to be the only way our neighbor had known us). A condescending attitude toward faith and his untimely decline in health sent him into a war between the head and the heart, but through all his issues, his wife continued to play our music in his ICU room. Our unknown neighbor described her joy when after removing her father from the ventilator, he began to say things like “Jesus is real” and would weep at the name of Christ. This lady’s father died the night Dean received this message, and we took extreme comfort in her confirmation.

Speaking of our loss and heaven’s gain, The Hoppers recently celebrated the life

of our dear friend and mentor, Dr. James Murray. Doc was a colonel in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, a 30+ year University president, president of the General Baptists Association, and one of our most treasured influences. The Murrays traveled with us on at least one cruise a year since ’92, and we can’t say how much we missed them on our most recent voyage to Jamaica; where we had perfect weather, delicious food, great fellowship and 25 souls found their way to the Cross.

This lead into Thanksgiving, where Connie cooked more Turkey and fried delicacies than we knew what to do with and Claude found himself moping after honestly losing a game of Monopoly to Lexus, the 7 year-old granddaughter. The next few weeks brought forth Christmas concerts galore, a tradition the Hoppers begun more than 35 years ago. Finally, we reached home. “Oh, there’s no place like home for the Holidays...”

Most everyone who enjoys southern gospel music knows who Legacy Five is.

We know that founding members Scott Fowler and Roger Bennett organized Legacy Five in January of 2000 after the Cathedrals retired in December of 1999. We know that since that time, they have traveled over 1 million miles and have sung over 2000 times. We know that they have been nominated for some 90 Singing News Fan awards. We know that they are one of a very few southern gospel groups to produce a concept video to their hit song, “Ask Me Why.” That video has been watched nearly 200,000 times on you tube. We know that they host the very popular 3 day annual event called “Celebration” in Nashville, Tennessee every New Year’s Eve at the Opryland Hotel. But we thought for this first edition of “Gospel Music Quarterly” we should find out some things we don’t know about Legacy Five. So we asked each member three questions about themselves.

What’s your favorite gift someone has given you?Scott Fowler (SF): My wedding ring was given to me by my grandpa Hamm. He gave it to me before he passed away and before I was ever married. He told me he hoped it would work as well for me as it did for him. So far so good!Scott Howard (SH): I wear a ring on my right hand that my dad gave me. It was given to him by his parents when he graduated high school.Trey Ivey (TI): Christmas day when I was 11 years old my parents gave me a DRUM SET. The only thing louder and more annoying than a drummer, is an “aspiring” drummer! Needless to say, I gave my parents many headaches that year.Gus Gaches (GG): A birthday card from my wife that had a tiny pair of socks in it that said, “I Luv Daddy.” It took a minute for me to realize that was a birth announcement.Matt Fouch (MF): The Christmas Day that I proposed to my wife and she said, “yes.” What a gift her “yes” was!

Other than the day you were saved, married and the day your kids were born, what’s the most exciting day of your life?SF: The day I was offered the job with the Cathedrals.SH: When I shot my first deer… I was 12 years old.

TI: The day I got the call to come on board with Legacy Five. I was at college about to walk in to class when Scott called me. One hour later, I had been offered the job, accepted the job, and skipped class!! That made for a great day!GG: When Tamara and I went to Italy.MF: My favorite day was while taking a drive in the car with my wife. She was expecting our son, Greyson. We were listening to a song called, “Thank You Lord” and I became overwhelmed with thankfulness for God’s goodness. I had to pull the car over and my wife and I prayed and thank God for all He has done in our lives.

Name two things on your bucket list.SF: Take a trip to Israel and sing at the White House for a president.SH: Get a pilot’s license and visit Australia.TI: Go to a game at each of the 30 MLB ballparks. So far, I am 8 for 30! Tour the White House.GG: Take wife and daughter to ParisMF: Take my wife, Candace to Italy and go on a Civil War camping trip with my father. Now, we know a little bit more about who Legacy Five is. For more “fun facts” about Legacy Five, visit their blog site at http://legacyfive.wordpress.com and visit them on facebook.

Celebrating the blessings and success of their best year ever, the Mark Trammell Quartet begins a new year having just found out that their song “I Want To Know” from the Testimony project was not only number one for the month of August 2012 but has in fact garnered the coveted position of the number one song in the Singing News Top 40 for 2012!

Mark Trammell says “It is truly a blessing to be able to provide for our families and do what we love to do all at the same time. Then you add things like “Song of the Year” and Top 5 group nominations as the icing on the cake. We want to say “Thank You” to the DJ’s, the fans, our Daywind family, and Susan Whisnant Radio Promotions for all the love and support.”

During 2013 the quartet continues to walk through newly opened doors and they give God all the glory for them. This year you will find them at such great events as the 39th Annual Singing At Sea, Branson Praisefest 2013, Singing in the Sun (Myrtle Beach, SC), the Great Western Fan Festival in Visalia, CA and of course the National Quartet Convention.

Also, be sure to order their new project “Lifetime” for your gospel music library. This is another Lari Goss production and is literally a walk through Mark Trammell’s life from the standpoint of the songs, the writers and the performers of the music that has most impacted his life. Speaking of new projects, they also have a new DVD “Live In Louisville” that will

be released sometime in February and you will only be able to get it at one of their concerts or from their office.

Lastly, it is time to make those plans for the Alaska Inside Passage cruise leaving from the port of Vancouver, BC, Canada on July 12, 2013 with Dr. Charles Stanley, Greater Vision, Mark Trammell Quartet, The Specks, Sisters, Dennis Swanburg and others. It is truly the trip of a lifetime!

Please call the Mark Trammell Quartet office at 256.442.1621 for more information or a brochure on any of the great events we’ve mentioned above. See you somewhere down the road!

With the ability to captivate new generations as well as inspire long-time fans, it is no surprise The Perrys celebrate 42 years in Southern Gospel music. There is no doubt that God has truly anointed The Perrys to sing songs of faith.

Having recently released their latest project, Through The Night, The Perrys will likely sing over 250 concerts in 2013. As one of the highest demanded Southern Gospel artists, The Perrys travel coast to coast covering over a hundred thousand miles each year. Fans across the country also travel hundreds of miles to hear The Perrys in concert. Their travel schedule is reason enough to invest in a fuel company!

The fans can’t help but love Libbi Perry Stuffle, the original Perry family member and Alto vocalist. Libbi and her family began singing Christmas day in 1970. Her personable, sweet spirit and passion for the ministry is icing on the cake after you hear her powerful voice. Voted Favorite Female Vocalist and Favorite Alto Singer, numerous times, God has blessed Libbi with a gifted voice. Libbi not only gets to sing with one of the best Bass singers in Southern Gospel music, but Tracy Stuffle is also her husband. Tracy brings a strong foundation to The Perrys. He and Libbi manage the group but fans know him for his humor on stage, making him a very entertaining Master of Ceremonies.

Joseph Habedank enters 2013 with great anticipation. He will celebrate his 10th year singing with The Perrys. Habedank began singing Lead vocals in 2006 after spending his first three years as the group’s Baritone vocalist. Joseph began writing southern gospel music at an early age and has partnered with many of gospel music’s legendary songwriters. His songs have not only been recorded by The Perrys but also by artists such as Gold City, Jeff and Sherri Easter and Karen Peck and New River.

Although no stranger to Southern Gospel music, in 2010, Bryan Walker joined The Perrys as Baritone singer. He is easily recognized as “the Singing Cop,” in many parts of east Tennessee. Walker auditioned on season 9 of American Idol and made it past several rounds garnering

himself a trip to Hollywood. That trip paved the way for him to sing with The Perrys and his rendition of “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” is sure to bring every audience member to their feet.

There is not enough space to list the awards The Perrys have received in their 42 years of ministry in Southern Gospel music or the amount of radio hits. Nor would those awards matter if one could only list the names of the people who have come to put their faith in Jesus Christ because The Perrys were obedient to God’s call to “Go therefore and preach the good news...” Some of the best sermons heard are to the tune of a Perrys song. Make plans to pick up a copy of The Perrys CDs or hear them at a concert in 2013. For more information on The Perrys, visit, www.perrysministries.com.

Jeff and Susan Whisnant, their two sons, Austin and Ethan along with Aaron Hise make up The Whisnants. We are a family group that has been traveling full-time since 1990.

Jeff and Susan have been married 24 years. Austin is 18 years old and plays bass guitar. Ethan is 15 years old and sings at special times in our program. Aaron Hise has been singing with the group for 12 years. We travel approximately 200 days of the year, touring the US and Canada with the goals of uplifting Jesus, encouraging the saints and seeing the lost brought to salvation. We truly enjoy traveling and being together. We are having the time of our lives! When we’re not on the road, the guys enjoy golfing and pretty much any outdoor activity outside of the confines of the bus. Susan is a SHOPPER, need we say more!!

God has tremendously blessed our ministry by giving us 12 #1 songs. Many of them are deep ministry oriented songs like “I’ll Trust The Potter’s Hand”, “Even in the Valley God Is Good” and “A Greater Yes”. Other of our popular songs are happy, light-hearted tunes like “King Jesus Is Coming” and “New Day Dawning”.

Recently, the Lord allowed us to work with legendary record producer Lari Goss. He co-produced our latest

mainline project titled “More Than Enough”. It has yielded several hit songs and continues to be a benchmark in our career. Our boys, Austin and Ethan recently completed their second recording, “Walk The Talk”, which seems to be broadening the scope of our ministry to include more young people, for which we see a great need. Our newest effort is a hymns project produced by none other than Gerald Wolfe. We are concerned that many of the songs we grew up singing in church are no longer being sung. So, with Gerald’s help choosing songs, arranging and playing piano on the session, we have put together what we believe is a great selection of church hymns and “just good ole church music” we call “Hymns and Harmony”.

Over the past few months, we have enjoyed tremendous concerts in the Mid

West at the Brumley Sing, Meramec Caverns, Silver Dollar City and in the east in Pennsylvania at the Lebanon Expo Center and at Dollywood. The Gatlinburg Gathering and The National Quartet Convention were both absolutely wonderful this year. Don’t hesitate to get your tickets for 2013. These great events will sell out quickly.

There are many great opportunities for The Whisnants in 2013. Please pray for us as we prepare to start a new mainline recording project, that God would send us just the right songs to encourage a world of hurting people. The prayer of our heart is that, in these last days, people will see Jesus in what we do and that we would be found faithful in our mission and our calling to spread the gospel through this great music that we call Southern Gospel Music. We look forward to seeing each of you at a church or concert venue in 2013.
