Your support for clean air and healthy communities has made Colorado a leader for decades. And now, we have an opportunity to come together as a state and nation to act on the defining issue of our time: climate change. The Obama Administration finalized the EPA’s Clean Power Plan in August. Now it’s Colorado’s turn to take the reins and develop its own climate action plan by fall 2016. The Clean Power Plan offers common sense solutions to the degradation our clean air and public health have suffered. Power plants are responsible for about 40% of the climate change-causing pollution in our atmosphere and are its single largest source. By setting sensible standards on carbon pollution, we can take a meaningful step toward cleaning our air and tackling climate change.

Fresh insights and renewed vigor!AS YOu MAY RECALL FROM OuR SPRING NEWSLEttER, I tOOk A thREE- MONth SABBAtICAL OvER thE SuMMER. It WAS AN INvIGORAtING ExPERIENCE. My wife and teenage daughters spent a month abroad, plus i had plenty of time at home in Colorado to explore my hobbies, relax, and reflect on the work i am lucky enough to do for a living.

Our annual Rebel with a Cause gala took place right before my sabbatical started. i always enjoy this event, but this year it felt even more abuzz with excitement and possibility than it normally does. Thanks to everyone who attended and thanks to our

Rebel honoree, Tom Steyer, there was a palpable sense of community, camaraderie, support and positivity in the room. i could not have imagined a better way to begin my time away from Conservation Colorado; i left with a strong sense of optimism.

My time away was more than just rest and relaxation. it was also an opportunity to look into Conservation Colorado and the environmental movement generally as a quasi -outsider. That perspective gave me a couple of important insights:

• The Conservation Colorado staff and board are an astoundingly talented and high-functioning

team. Many people asked me while i was away if i was concerned about how Conservation Colorado would function in my absence. My consistent response was a confident “Not at all.” upon returning, my confidence was rewarded, in spades. The team did fantastic work this summer.

• There is a lot of forward momentum on our issues, and climate change in particular. New allies, from Republican primary voters to China, are coming out in support of bold action to combat climate change.

We have a terrific team. We are poised to make major progress on climate change. it won’t be easy, by a long shot, but it is increasingly clear that history will remember those who fight for action on climate change more favorably than those who cling to the status quo. So let’s keep up the fight. Let’s protect Colorado’s air, land, and water, because it’s the right thing to do.

I CAN’t thANk YOu ENOuGh FOR YOuR SuPPORt; WE CAN’t DO ANY OF thIS WIthOut YOu.

In our 50th year, we are hugely grateful to our supporters. It WAS 1965, AND AN INtREPID GROuP OF OutDOOR ENthuSIAStS, DEtERMINED tO SAvE thE REMARkABLE LANDSCAPES AND PRIStINE MOuNtAINS AND vALLEYS OF thE StAtE thEY SO LOvED, BANDED tOGEthER tO FORM thE COLORADO OPEN SPACE COORDINAtING COuNCIL (COSCC). Over the following years, this dedicated gathering of volunteer activists evolved into the renowned Colorado Environmental Coalition (CEC), and in 2013, the organization was transformed yet again when it merged with Colorado Conservation Voters (CCV) to become who we are today: Conservation Colorado. This year, we are humbled and grateful to celebrate 50 years of protecting Colorado’s air, land, water, and communities, and we thank

committed individuals like you for helping us reach this milestone!

Wilderness was the founding issue for COSCC and has been a priority ever since. in the ensuing years we’ve tackled many other issues, including timber sales, oil shale development, wild & scenic river designations, dam proposals, smart growth, and sustainable transit.

There are so many people who have been integral to the successes of COSCC, CEC, CCV, and Conservation Colorado over the years – thousands of volunteers, coalition partners,

activists, staff, donors, and other supporters who made us into the organization we are today. Folks like Roger Hansen, Ed Hilliard, Estella Leopold and others who decided in 1965 that Colorado needed a new organization to advocate for the protection of the state’s incredible landscapes and natural resources. And past directors like Heidi VanGenderen, Susan Bonsall Rosenberry, Emily Roet, Elise Jones, and Susan Tixier (who recently passed away and will be honored in the next edition of the newsletter). There are far too many names to list them all here but you know who you are – and we thank you for helping us champion the fight for Colorado’s wonderful wild places and quality of life for the past half- century.

Becca brought a unique mix of hilarity and tenacity to everything she did. She was very dedicated to her work, particularly the effort to designate Browns Canyon as a National Monument. She played a pivotal role on the Conservation Colorado team in making the

national monument a reality, and it will continue to be a meaningful legacy for future generations. She wrote her graduate school thesis on protecting the Canyon, and upon hearing that it would indeed become a monument, she got a tattoo to commemorate the occasion.

She became involved with Colorado Environmental Coalition as an intern in 2011, and over time, became one of the best and brightest community organizers on conservation issues. Her unmitigated passion for the cause gave her a powerful ability to connect with others and motivate them to act.

Becca was one of the kindest, most passionate people we have had the privilege to work with, and she will be dearly missed by not just the board and staff of Conservation Colorado, but by the many lives she touched in

in a fitting tribute to Becca’s work, we celebrated a major milestone for Colorado’s wilderness heritage in July: the designation of Browns Canyon as a national monument. This landmark designation, which was signed by President Obama in February, elevates a crown jewel of Colorado’s public lands, sustains the local outdoor recreation economy, and protects a gorgeous river canyon for generations to enjoy. We can’t thank you enough for your support for public lands; a real gem will be permanently protected because of your efforts.
